Newcastle league revives Coalfields rep trial - Coast versus Coalfields is the new name, and there could be a whole new look to this year's Newcastle Rugby League trial match that splits the Hunter in half. Bradford chairman Hood slams the signing Greg Bird to Catalans - Furious Bulls chairman Peter Hood has slammed the decisions leading to star signing Greg Bird joining Catalans Dragons, branding them "utter nonsense". The Australian Test ace completed his switch to Catalans Dragons after his initial Bradford move fell through.

RLCM EXTRACT
RLCM Extract from eBook 19 - Keeping them out By Sean Cassidy - Strength & Conditioning Coach .......these drills are introduced in the off-season and in particular mid pre-season and throughout in-season. The volume and intensity of these drills varies throughout the training year.
Your team is defending their try line for the second set in a row.
If your teams' defence is good enough they will keep them out.
A basic drill that can be used is simply going up and back over 10-metres. From this basic drill the variations are limited only by your imagination.
The following are variables that you can introduce or manipulate, utilising the basic drill listed above.
. Number of up and backs (2-30)
. Time going up and back (15 secs - 4/5 minutes)
. Hitting the ground on your chest or back every time you go out or come back
. Using pads or tackle bags to hit when you go out
. Running various distances after tackles or sets of tackles
. The distance you go out and back
. Work as individuals, pairs or larger groups
. The number of people in a group
. The rest between efforts (10 secs - minutes)
. The number of sets completed
By changing these variables, you will be able to alter the training outcome to suit your plan or philosophy.
No part of the game is more important than the other, so adequate time must be devoted to developing attacking ability. Games and speed and agility drills are effective in developing sharp attacking skills.
If you are able to develop a high level of ability to tolerate lactic acid in your players, you are well on the way to establishing an effective defence.....To read more click here and purchase RLCM eBook 19.

Wednesday's RLCM Extract with Craig Coleman from Coachtalk Yearbook 2000 - ".........it is the same for defence; we put our nine top defenders against maybe 13 attackers and try to shut down the ball down without the offence breaching the line. If they can do it at training, then there is no reason why they can't do it when the chips are down in a match.
