'Play at Sam, Again' - By Gary Roberts, RLCM - Trials at NRL level are very hard to get a true reading of how a team will progress through the year. NRL teams do not play their full squads, star players are given limited time.

So, there is not a lot that can be read into the NRL trial at Stockland Park on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday night.

A crowd of just over 8000 fans turned up to watch two of the key teams in the NRL competition go through their final trial game before the season gets under way on Friday week.

Many of the Melbourne Storm stars such as Inglis, Cronk, Slater, Smith, Hoffman and Johnson were playing and for the Broncos Lockyer, Wallace, Parker, Thaiday, Clinton, Simms and Falou turned out and it also saw the return to the team of Michael de Vere.

So, with two good teams in their final trial before the start of the 2009 season, the enthusiastic crowd was set for a good game of footy, albeit a NRL trial.

In reality, it was a poor game with stoppages through dropped ball, unforced errors, penalties on top of penalties and confusion with the rulings by the two referees.

One penalty was given against the Broncos [Play 11 - Set 6 Storm] for slowing down the PTB. From the point of contact until the player played the ball, the time was four seconds!

It was not a contest. It was a trial but the locals loved seeing the NRL stars at their football ground, Stockland Park.

In searching for something to report, I started taking particular notice of Sam Thaiday.

Reports have him as potential captain of the Broncos' team upon Lockyer's retirement. He believes he has now acquired leadership qualities, he was the Broncos' player of the year in 2008 and the Broncos have signed him until 2011.

That is all good stuff for Sam. It reads well.

However, I did not see all of the above qualities on Saturday night.

Thaiday played the first 20 minutes, was replaced and came back on for the first 23 minutes and last four minutes of second half.

What I did see was a player who could be a liability to the Broncos, if his Saturday night's form is transferred to NRL matches.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt. It was hot, a trial, the full team was not playing and it did not matter who won or lost.

In the movie, Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart made the classic quote, 'Play it again, Sam'.

NRL coaches will make a good study of Thaiday's legs' tackle technique and also see the possibility, as Cameron Smith did on Saturday night, of having him still on the ground whilst the PTB is in motion, realize and capitalize on his poor decision making at marker defence at either first or second marker position and his nonchalant retreat to the 10m after being the third person in the tackle.

They may rearrange Bogart's words to look something like the title of this article!

Bush footy is wilting from the top down, says Les Boyd - Bush football is a tree with flourishing roots but suffering dieback at its crown if rugby league in the Riverina is any indication. Junior league is strong but the code is dying at the top as drought, recession, lopsided leagues and the reluctance of former NRL players to end their careers as country captain-coaches affect the number and quality of senior teams.

RLCM Extracts

Wednesday's RLCM Extract from RLCM Coachtalk Yearbook - Wayne Bennett - ....just as he recognises the importance of options for his players, Bennett also realises the importance of accepting a variety of views and remaining open to thoughts other than his own.

As previously stated, Bennett credits the majority of his longevity to the ability to adapt and that adaptation has only been allowed to take place by putting aside his ego and concepts of the norm.
One of the great features of sport, in any form, are the dynamics that prevent competition from becoming stale and expected.

Whether they be in the form of different players with differing attributes or by playing on different surfaces or by altering the social surrounds to affect the outcome of the match.

The same concept applies to coaching, where alternate styles of approach form an entertaining reflection of human nature.

"I suppose the important thing to remember is that many things in Rugby League are dependant on personal philosophies," Bennett states.... click here and purchase a RLCM Coachtalk eYearbook.

The following programme is put forward as a guide to encourage clubs to use it and produce a base from which to work. The overall development of skills in junior players should be uppermost in the thoughts of their coaches. This development must commence in the mini-footy ages and progress as the players go through the age groups.

RLCM Extract with Craig Coleman from Coachtalk Yearbook 2000 - ".........it is the same for defence; we put our nine top defenders against maybe 13 attackers and try to shut down the ball down without the offence breaching the line. If they can do it at training, then there is no reason why they can't do it when the chips are down in a match.
