The coaches who who work hardest win - and occasionally explode - Canberra coach Dave Furner was working at his desk at 5.45am recently when an ARL development officer dropped by the Raiders office to collect some footballs for a coaching session at a distant school. NRL coaches seem to operate on the theory that the less they sleep, the more they'll win.

Jason Ryles could miss rest of Catalan Dragons season - The Catalan Dragons fear that they could have lost Jason Ryles, their key signing for 2009, for the season after he suffered an injury in his first match. The Australian Test prop was forced off during the defeat by Huddersfield last weekend with a damaged shoulder, although he was able to return later.

Young Newtown Jets Win At Home against the Wests Magpies - The Newtown Jets SG Ball Cup remained unbeaten after seeing off Western Suburbs by 44-22 in the second-round competition match played at Henson Park on Sunday afternoon. This was the first opportunity that Newtown supporters have had to take a look at the newest addition to the Jets Rugby League inventory and they would have been impressed as the young Jets took control of the match in the second half.

Gillette National Youth League - Week 19 - Reports - Keighley Cougar Cubs 10 Siddal 24 - Cougar Park - Siddal posted their third victory of the campaign and moved above the Cubs after taking the spoils in a lively, exciting clash. Home winger Chris Burgoyne's touchdown with only 17 minutes remaining, to make it 12-10 to the visitors, put the encounter in the balance but Siddal re-grouped to cross twice and complete a merited win.

League of Their Own - Now is the time to select the players who may need that extra attention throughout the season. The young 'up and coming' star player who will feel the pressure of the media and the critique of the fans getting tougher and tougher after each game.
Maybe there is a player on your side who is showing signs of poor behaviour and you feel as though discipline will do the trick and tight reins will hold him back..this very rarely works long term.
These players need individual attention in areas that perhaps are unknown to the player themselves. The behaviour is usually acted out from other causes.

Les McIntyre OAM passes away - The National Rugby League and Australian Rugby League today mourn the passing of Mr Les McIntyre OAM, the man known throughout the game as the founding father of the Canberra Raiders. Mr McIntyre, who was awarded his OAM for services to Rugby League and Community last year, passed away last night after a lengthy illness at the age of 93.

Titans 40 Cronulla 16 - An electrical storm at sunset provided the pre game entertainment at Darwin's Richardson Park as the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans and the Cronulla Sharks delivered the top end an NRL spectacular. Integral Energy NSWRL Western Sydney Academy - Saturday's official launch of the Integral Energy NSWRL Western Sydney Academy coincided with almost 35,000 western Sydney school children having experienced a taste of Rugby League this February. The ARL Development Recruitment Blitz for February saw scores of NRL players, development officers and junior officials visit a total of 127 schools throughout the western Sydney region.

Dale Shearer in critical condition after car crash - Former rugby league Test and State of Origin player Dale Shearer is in critical condition in hospital after a crash on the Sunshine Coast. Police on Sunday confirmed a 43-year-old man had been hurt in an accident at Peregian Springs just after 11pm (AEST) on Saturday.

RLCM Extract from eBook 23 - What is Empowerment as a Coaching Approach? Written by Lynn Kidman - Current Coaching Practices - To maximise athlete performance, coaches, like leaders of formal organisations, combine the power of their position with a particular leadership style. Although coaching today encompasses a wide variety of approaches, the traditional leadership style has given coaches a licence to 'exploit' their power by taking the choice and control away from the athlete.
When a coach takes total control and athletes have basically no say, the approach is called prescriptive or autocratic. Sometimes this style has been described, mistakenly, as an important element in coaching success.
A prescriptive coach endeavours to control athlete behaviour not only throughout training and competition, but also beyond the sport setting.
A prescriptive coach tends to coach athletes as if they are on a factory assembly line. Athletes of prescriptive coaches are often 'hooked' into a limited form of learning that emphasises memorising rather than understanding or solving problems.
This limited approach encourages athletes to be robotic in their actions and thinking. They do not experience themselves as having an active role in contributing to or being a part of their learning.
In the professional era, the performance objectives of many coaches depend on winning. The expectation is that coaches may be held accountable for many uncertainties beyond the coaches' control (e.g. injuries, exceptional play by the opposition, poor officiating, the weather).
In reacting to this pressure on themselves, coaches tend to give athletes extraordinarily gruelling training sessions that demand more than the athletes can give; sometimes they use dehumanising practices to enforce their control (Pratt & Eitzen, 1989).
Unfortunately, for coaches like these, the pressure in this professional 'must-win' environment becomes so great that coaches 'take over' in an attempt to ensure their athletes are winning.
The directions become coach-centred, rather than mutual between the athletes and the coach.
This disempowering form of coach control actually contradicts why many athletes are participating in sport. It can have detrimental effects on the athletes who are controlled.
