Extract from RLCM eBook 15 an interview with Phil Gould

.....Q. Game plans and patterns of play?

A.
When we say we change them, we work on different things. During the off season our club plays will probably run for 20 pages.

You could write as much into it as you really wanted to but I don't know that there is a right way or a wrong way to play the game.

I don't know that one way to play the game is any better and I think if our rules are right and they are interpreted correctly it is healthy that we have so many different styles of play and that you can be successful at that style.

I don't really know that there is one best way to do it but if you pick something that is effective you can win with it.

The thing about being well drilled and about having patterns is that it helps you stand up under pressure. It helps you get your best athletes in good positions at the right time.

It helps them to be able to anticipate more, we overestimate how many players can do that for themselves and without the assistance of a team pattern or a team structure or whatever, some players would struggle.

They are physically, emotionally and mentally first grade footballers but they are not the initiative people that we see who end up playing touch football or something like that.

We have got to be able to help those players in positions to help your Allan Langers and the Kevin Walters and those types of players do what they do best.

They need the rest of the team working in a certain direction and that is what it does. It provides something to fall back on under pressure and helps all the players in the team mesh better in what they are doing..................

Graham Murray a bolter to coach Kangaroos - He failed at Origin level and remains happily unemployed, but former North Queensland coach Graham Murray has emerged as a shock contender for the Kangaroos job. Matthew Elliott positive despite threat of axe - The threat of being the first NRL coach axed in 2009 has not ruined Matthew Elliott's pre-season at the Panthers. Elliott, who was spared a lifeline at Penrith after a horror season last year, said his desire to succeed had not changed because of the continuous speculation over his immediate future. The fact Penrith meet Cronulla, Manly and Melbourne in the first five rounds is bound to keep Elliott's shaky position in the spotlight.

Former Maroon Scott Tronc helps Sea Eagles
By Steve Zemek, Sunshine Coast Daily - You could accuse former Maroons hardman Scott Tronc of being a turncoat, but he says he just sees himself as a great supporter of rugby league.

The former Rothmans Medal winner has just struck up a deal for his business, Trades and Labour Hire, to sponsor the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles, despite being the coach of the side's Queensland Cup rivals the East Tigers' Colts side.

Tronc, who wracked up stints at the Brisbane Broncos, Wests Magpies, Canterbury Bulldogs and Souths Rabbitohs during his seven-year NSWRL playing career, said despite having associations with both clubs, he will have no mixed feelings when the two sides clash.

"Once we get out there onto the field it isn't going to matter... I'm just a supporter of football," he said. "I know the Sea Eagles are doing some great stuff up here and we're just looking to expand our business presence on the Sunshine Coast."

Tronc became involved with the Sea Eagles through his brother, the club's assistant coach Rhett Tronc.

His support of rugby league doesn't just extend to the Sea Eagles either, he's also one of the major sponsors of the Burleigh Bears, the 2004 Queensland Cup premiers.

"It's good to be involved with the Sea Eagles," he said.

"We all get out and support each other."

Sea Eagles CEO Brett Winkler said the club was excited to have Tronc and his company on board as they prepare to kick off their maiden season in the Queensland Cup.

"It's great that they've become involved with the club," he said.

"Scott's got a great football heritage and it's fantastic that he's able to support Queensland football.

"Also it means that when players come to the club, they know that they'll be able to help them out in finding work outside of league as well."
