Making Nutrition Part of the Training Program

Written By Trent Watson - Clued on Food Nutrition Consultants

........a hungry athlete with a big appetite will tend to eat whatever is available and without even trying and with no questions asked in scenario 2 the athlete is provided with a diet that is high in carbohydrate and low in fat.

If the athlete or team of athletes are not organised they will probably be left with having to choose low carbohydrate, high fat meals as described in scenario 1.

These scenarios illustrate how important planning and organisation are for an athlete to eat foods that are optimal for health and performance. They certainly do not only apply in a traveling situation.

Athletes will find themselves in a similar situation by packing and not packing lunch for work (school) each day.

Coaches certainly have a role in encouraging their athletes to be planned and organised. Their role may also carry over into the planning and organisation of meals when their team is traveling.

Consistency

An athlete that trains and competes day-to-day will use their carbohydrate or fuel stores up day-to-day and these must be replaced.

The only difference between the two athletes is that 'athlete 2' had a slack day on his carbohydrate intake on the Tuesday. This left him with low fuel stores for training all week and on his competition day he ran out of fuel stores and would have become very fatigued.

Even on rest days an athlete need to concentrate on a high carbohydrate diet to make up for any short falls from previous days where training has been hard and energy stores have been soaked up.

A trap I often see athletes fall into is taking a supplement they believe is the answer to everything and they forget about their basic nutrition requirements.

My advice here is that there are no 'golden bullets' when it comes to nutrition.

Supplements can certainly play a role in an athletes training program, however to have their full effect they need to be combined with an optimal daily diet.

Athletes certainly have to be consistent with their eating patterns to maintain optimal performance.

Nutritional training regime

Training provides an opportunity for the athlete to physically replicate and fine-tune their game/ competition/race situation.

I always say that it provides the perfect time to experiment and fine-tune your eating patterns as well. Training nutritionally will help the athlete find out what works for them and what does not. It will also answer that commonly asked question; "What do I eat before a game/competition/ race?"

Training nutritionally requires the athlete to note what foods they are eating and at what times they are eating prior to training. On the training days they feel good and perform well they should reflect back on what they have eaten prior to that training session.

They may choose to apply an eating regime a second time to a subsequent training session. If it continues to work they should apply this to their game/competition/ race situation.

A nutrition regime that works for the athlete will provide a mental and physical edge for the competition situation Consume foods high in carbohydrate and ample amounts of fluid are some broad recommendations regarding nutrition prior to training and competition however these recommendations will vary widely among individuals. It is up to the individual with the guidance of the coach or a dietitian, to define what works for them.

Conclusion - Training nutritionally is being consistently prepared and organised to consume a diet that is nutritionally adequate, high in carbohydrate, low in fat, with ample amounts of fluid.........

Titans set up Pathway to NRL By Luke Turgeon - The Gold Coast Titans have created a potential dynasty of homegrown superstars after it was revealed the club will field sides from under-13s to first grade next year. The junior pathways project was unveiled at Skilled Park yesterday in a bid to have at least half the first grade side born and bred Gold Coasters by 2013.

The program puts the club on par with Sydney clubs and alleviates issues of players leaving the nursery because of a lack of infrastructure.

From their early teenage years players will be able to don a Titans jersey and be educated about on and off the field habits as part of a set path to first grade rugby league.

Titans captain Scott Prince, who grew up in Mt Isa, said he would have relished such an opportunity in his younger days and believed it would ensure local talent remains at the Titans.

"That's probably the most important thing about the pathways project, is the fact we're keeping the local kids local and they won't go to Sydney clubs or up north to the Cowboys," he said.

"I envy the kids on the Gold Coast that have this program."

Coach John Cartwright, who played a key role in developing the program, said he was confident the city's leading players would not be poached south.

"It will give every kid in our region a clear pathway to NRL football," he said.

"It shows them that they don't have to go anywhere -- what they can get in Sydney and Brisbane they can now get here," he said.

Under the program, local under-13s and 14s will play in a Titans summer school.

It is hoped the under-16s would compete in the Harold Matthews competition, the SG Ball will continue for under-18s, Toyota Cup for the under-20s and then the NRL.

Cartwright said with the SG Ball and Toyota Cup teams introduced this year, players like Shannon Walker had been able to stay.

Managing director Michael Searle said it was a clear investment in junior rugby league.

"If you want to play elite footy at NRL level you'll get the best opportunity here on the Coast," he said.

"Anthony Laffranchi comes back from Origin camp a more accomplished player and he can pass that on to his teammates and the juniors that come to the Titans can go back to their junior clubs and pass on what they learnt."

The program will also assist with off-field issues such as diet, nutrition, behaviour and the media.

Cartwright admits not everyone will make first grade but the program may keep players in the game at all levels.

"It stands them in good stead for whatever they may choose to do."

Searle said the program would be easier to complete if it was purely about rugby league but the club wanted to incorporate lessons outside of footy to round off the teenagers as people.

Bennett opens up about Dell By Paul Kent - Wayne Bennett wouldn't talk about the job at St George Illawarra, even after he was appointed. He wouldn't talk about Nathan Brown's struggles, or the Dragons' apparent lack of interest or intent. There was nothing about players coming or going, or the plans he has for his first new club in 20 years.

But when Wendell Sailor was named to resume his NRL career for St George Illawarra against the Broncos tonight, Bennett broke his silence.

"I'm just pleased to see him back playing football,'' the coach said. "More than pleased.''

Sailor is a personal favourite of Bennett's and as the Dragons prepare to play Brisbane at WIN Stadium tonight, the coach revealed the Saints have acquired something, in Sailor, that is very rare.

"He just transforms people,'' Bennett said. "He galvanises them. He brings something very unique.''

Bennett has no idea how many years Sailor, 33, will have under him at the Dragons when he begins coaching next year, but he's certain of one thing.

"I'm really looking forward to going back and working with him,'' Bennett said. "Wendell's a great pro. He's a pleasure to have at your training place and a pleasure to have in your team. He just brings something.''

Whatever time is left for their pairing at the Dragons, Sailor will make it seem even less, like times do when you are having fun. One plus is the two years' enforced rest, combined with Sailor's "boundless enthusiasm''.

"If enthusiasm gives you longevity, he could be around a long while,'' Bennett said.

While a strict teetotaller, Bennett holds no ill-will over Sailor for his drug suspension. He knows the character of the man involved.

"Whenever I coached him he wouldn't always admit straight away that he was wrong, but I can guarantee that within 24 hours he would have thought it through and come back and said, `Mate, I was wrong'. The other great quality about Wendell is that he cares about people enormously. He's wonderful.''

Bennett and Sailor will face off for the first time tonight after meeting more than 20 years ago, with much of that time spent working together. Already winger Denan Kemp has copped a small tip in defending Bennett's original power winger.

"If he beats you, go and chase him because he'll want to beat you again before he scores,'' Bennett told him. "He loves beating people. That's what he loved about rugby, the two extra defenders to beat. He doesn't worry about straight lines to the tryline to score, he wants to beat you again and again.''

Sailor's return is nothing but a plus for the game, for all it brings. "He used to call himself Bronco Dell, and then he became Rah Rah Dell and then he became Shellharbour Dell and now he's Dragon Dell,'' Bennett said.

"It's all Dell. It's not the team, it's all about him. But it has got to be about him to beat you. He's a confidence player, that's who he is.''

A large part of Bennett's confidence in Sailor's return is his manner in handling himself, prompting the usually tacit coach to dive into the deep vein of humour he hides so well.

"He's going to love the new rule interpretations on the wrestle because he always loved having numbers on him,'' Bennett said. Read more

Feel loved? Harden up, son By Dean Lonergan - The drama surrounding the contract of Sonny Bill Williams drags on. On Wednesday, SBW's crew - including manager Khoder Nasser, ex-league players turned boxers Anthony Mundine and Solomon Haumono and SBW's father and brother - turned up to a meeting with Dogs bosses George Peponis and Todd Greenberg.

It turns out that money is not necessarily his biggest gripe. It turns out that SBW wants to feel more love from the club and thinks the club should do more to enhance the growing legend that is SBW. At least that's what I understand of it from reports about the meeting.

If that's the case I have only one piece of advice for SBW - harden up, young fella.

There are many working class people who do 50 or 60 hours a week on anywhere from $12 to $20 an hour. They would love to have your pay packet for one week, let alone every week.

There is no doubt that SBW is a tough and uncompromising player, a fantastic player and a legend in the making. For Christ's sake do not go and spoil your public profile around matters that are really quite petty.

If you are not feeling the love brother, you are in the wrong sport because there have been plenty of tough and great players who came before you, the likes of Mark Graham, the Sorenson brothers Dane and Kurt, Kevin Tamati, who didn't really have any great need to feel the love.

They just went out and consistently displayed what great and tough football players they were week-in and week-out, for far less money than you are on and without any need to feel loved. Empathy was not high on their list of things they needed.

Without doubt Sonny Bill Williams is a brilliant talent. I'd hate to see his image tarnished by coming across as a whinger when in all reality life is pretty good if you are Sonny Bill Williams.
Take a look in the mirror son. Read more

Castleford name 19 man squad for Wakefield clash - The Tigers have named Brent Sherwin, Kirk Dixon and Ryan Clayton in their 19-man squad for Saturday's big derby clash with Wakefield.

The trio all missed out on the win over at Warrington but coach Terry Matterson is hoping that they will have all recovered from injury to put themselves in contention for the Wildcats fixture.

The only new injury at the Jungle is winger Adam Fletcher, who has a back injury, which rules him out of Saturday's fixture.

BARRETT CONFIRMS TWO-YEAR DEAL WITH THE SHARKS - The Sharks confirm that they have secured the services of Trent Barrett on a two-year deal. Currently playing for Wigan in the English Super League, Barrett will join the Sharks for the 2009 season.

Sharks coach Ricky Stuart, who spoke of Barrett and what his experience could potentially bring to the club at a recent members forum, was pleased that the former St George-Illawarra product would be in Sharks colours for the next two seasons.

"I'm extremely excited about having Trent join the club," Stuart said. "I've got no doubt he will be very good for the Sharks both on and off the field."

Likewise, CEO Tony Zappia was of the belief that Barrett, who has played 11 Test matches for Australia and seven times for NSW in the State of Origin series, would be a definite asset to the Sharks over the next two years.

"I've got no doubt Trent can add a new attacking dimension to the team and he is a great addition to the club," Zappia said.

After 11 seasons at St George Illawarra Barrett was granted a release by the Dragons to join Wigan in 2007, where he has since played more than 50 games for the Warriors over the last two seasons.

In an outstanding debut season in the UK Barrett earned a number of accolades, including the Rugby League Writers Association Player of the Year award in 2007. Previous to joining Wigan, Barrett played 186 NRL games for the Dragons.

Barrett became available for a return to the NRL after negotiating an early release from his three-year contract at Wigan. Cronulla Sharks Online

Luke O'Donnell blasts NRL judiciary over ban By Karl deKroo and Dean Ritchie - Incensed North Queensland forward Luke O'Donnell has challenged NRL judiciary members over his seven-game suspension on striking charges.

"I was completely shocked," O'Donnell said last night. "I went down there to show it was a fending action and that it wasn't reckless or intentional. I thought our case was truthful and we put it across well.

"To have three ex-players think it was reckless and intentional - it's hard to take. As ex-players, I thought they would know. It is such a common action. You see it all the time. I've been doing it for the nine seasons I've had in the NRL."

O'Donnell's ban came after he was sent off for allegedly raising his elbow into Panther Luke Lewis in Townsville last Saturday night. He was also charged for a similar incident involving Luke Priddis.

But O'Donnell is adamant he did nothing wrong and wants answers.

"No one gave me a reason, no one looked me in the eye and told me why I was guilty," O'Donnell said. "It would be nice to know how they came to their decision."

O'Donnell has won support from former Test back-rower Gorden Tallis, who felt the strong-running Cowboy had done little wrong.

"I can understand Luke's frustration," Tallis said. "He has paid the price for running the ball aggressively. The defenders he collected were square on and flat-footed and have tried to go high and worn a forearm. I didn't think it was the elbow.

"He runs a lot like the way I used to. When you run hard and straight you are coached to get your bumper bar up, because if you don't and a tackler wants to go high chest on chest, if you don't have that barrier up your heads are going to meet. He is just protecting himself. It's not as if he has cocked his elbow.

"I don't believe Luke O'Donnell is a dirty player but now he has this mark on his record."

NRL director of operations Graham Annesley said O'Donnell was not entitled to an explanation from the judiciary.

"The role of the judiciary panel is to hear all the evidence and then make a decision that they believe to be correct based on that evidence," Annesley said.

"Just as a jury in a court situation is not required to give reasons, the panel performs a similar role at a judiciary hearing." Read more

Mitchell Sargent signs with Castleford - Castleford Tigers have completed the signing of prop forward Mitchell Sargent from the Newcastle Knights. Subject to his obtaining a work permit, Mitchell will join us for the rest of the current season and the next two. The Tigers are delighted to have been able to bring in a player with his top-flight experience and he will be a welcome addition to our squad for the next two and a half years.

The 28-year-old has made over 100 appearances in the NRL in a senior career that started with the Melbourne Storm (2002-2003). He then moved to the North Queensland Cowboys (2004-2006) before switching to the Knights in 2007.

Mitchell was a first grade regular last year until a missing out on the latter stages of the season through injury. Fully fit, he returned to action this season in the Knights NSW Cup side and was included in the first grade 18 for the past weekends game.

A tough defender and strong attacker, Mitchell was selected for the Country of Origin side in 2006.
Work permit permitting, the Tigers are planning to bring Mitchell over to the UK as soon as possible and hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

Commenting on his new signing, Tigers boss Terry Matterson said: "I know Mitchell having coached him at Melbourne Storm and he will bring plenty to our squad. He is a big mobile forward with plenty of experience and I'm really pleased to have him on board. He is an aggressive forward but he also has plenty of skill and I'm looking forward to him joining up with us." Castleford Online

QRL Wizard Cup Preview

WYNNUM MANLY v IPSWICH *Live on ABC TV
BMD Kougari Oval, Saturday June 7 - 2pm
Referee: Michael Wise
- REFRESHED after two weeks off, Wynnum Manly is in a prime position to take the two competition points in the ABC TV match. The Seagulls are at close to fullstrength, with only Luke Dalziel Don (Queensland Residents) missing from the side.

In contrast, the depleted Jets have three players - Josh Lewis, Isaak Ah Mau and Ian Lacey - in camp with the Residents. Ipswich's stocks have been further weakened by injuries to key forwards Danny Coburn and Leigh Coghill.

In a further blow, experienced centre Jason Bulgarelli (knee) is an unlikely starter for the Jets, who will be glad to see the bye next weekend. The third-placed Jets have a four point buffer on Wynnum Manly but the Seagulls are favoured to bridge that gap in front of their home supporters.

MACKAY v NORTHERN PRIDE
Mackay Junior Fields, Saturday June 7 - 7pm
Referee: Nick Kalpakidis
- The Northern Pride's Chey Bird should become the first Wizard Cup player to score 100 points for the season in this match. Bird's tally stands at 98 from four tries and 41 goals.

The ice-cool fullback has been one of the standouts for the Pride in their debut season. Bird's team enters the round 12 clash with the Cutters in equal first spot alongside the Souths Logan Magpies. The Cutters are battling away in second last spot but are comforted by the fact fifth spot is only three points away.

Former New Zealand Warriors hooker George Gatis has been named to make his debut for Mackay. His inclusion has relegated impressive youngster Luke Srama to the interchange bench. The Pride thumped the Cutters 44-16 in their round one clash and the Cutters would love nothing more than to set the record straight in Mackay.

BURLEIGH V EASTS
Pizzey Park, Sunday June 8 - 1pm
Referee: Justin Davis
- WITHOUT three of their most consistent players, the Burleigh Bears face a tough assignment in the Pizzey Park clash against the Tigers.

The absence of Queensland Residents stars Adam Fielder, Nick Parfitt and Martin Griese leaves the Bears with a huge mountain to climb. Fielder's absence could put the biggest strain on the home side. The former Bulldog has scored 15 tries for the Bears at the halfway mark of the Wizard Cup season.

Burleigh enters the match in fourth spot, but could slump to as low as seventh if it losses to the Tigers. Darren Smith's Tigers sit just outside the top five and are coming off a last-start 30-16 victory over the Norths Devils.

REDCLIFFE v TWEED HEADS
Dolphin Oval, Sunday June 8, 2pm
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
- THE 2007 grand finalists meet for a second time this season in an intriguing round 12 showdown at Dolphin Oval. Redcliffe romped home 38-14 in round one but have only added three more wins since then.

Tweed had four players - Brad Davis, Selasi Berdie, Luke Swain and Clint Amos - named in the Queensland Residents team last Monday. Their selection for Wednesday's representative match has ruled them out of the clash with the Dolphins.

Redcliffe's Kaine Manihera is also in the Residents team. With both sides attempting to claw their back into the top five, Sunday's match should be played with all the intensity of a semi-final clash. Tweed has put itself back in contention with three wins and a draw from its last four matches.

NORTHS v CENTRAL COMETS
Bishop Park, Sunday June 8, 2.30pm
Referee: Adam Neale
- THE Central Comets will be eyeing off a third straight Wizard Cup victory when they travel to Bishop Park for Sunday's clash.

The Comets have been one of the surprise packets of the 2008 competition, with their team of virtual 'unknowns' winning four matches and testing several teams along the way. A fifth victory of the season would have the Comets firmly knocking on the door of the top five.

The Rockhampton based team is coming off a last start 28-26 win over Redcliffe. The Comets and their fans enjoyed a big night of celebrations after that win, which was only the club's fourth victory over the Dolphins in 23 encounters.

Central will be without strike centre Karl Johnson, who will become the first Comets players to don a Residents jersey since Sime Busby in 2001. QRL Online
