Ricky Stuart tells how to coach it! Written by Ashley Bradnam

A team's aptitude for creating and sustaining pressure on the opposition often determines the result of the match.

Limiting mistakes, controlling field position and ball possession, completing sets of six and concluding them in a dominant field location undoubtedly contribute to reaping winning returns.

Conversely, the ability to absorb pressure plays a crucial role. It's no good cracking through the opposition if they simply crack you right back.

The top teams can sop up seemingly relentless raids on their own line, tackle after tackle, set after set. Some coaches call it the ability to attack in defence. There's no doubt it can play a significant role in dictating the outcomes of contests.

So how do you coach it?

"It's a matter of creating the consistency in creating and absorbing pressure' says Ricky Stuart.

"You can't have one without the other and be successful. Firstly, if you are consistently under pressure there's a reason for it and that needs to be identified immediately - it might be because you're turning the ball over or kicking poorly - but secondly, if you are under attack you need to be able to defend it and see the battle out".

It's often proposed the best result to the completion of a set (apart from scoring) is to gain a repeat set.

Deftly placed grubbers into the in goal have become customary by way of achieving this and few NRL teams don't have players who excel in executing them.

It's therefore to be expected that at some stage in a match a side should expect to face repeat sets coming off their own line. Quite often it's during this pressure situation that the game's result will become known. If the attacking team can turn pressure into points it gives them greater confidence of achieving a similar result the next time they venture 'downtown', however, if the defending side sustains the pressure continuously, it can break the back of the attacking team who seem to throw their hands in air and scream 'how can we get through?'

The key Stuart believes lies in the mindset of the defenders.

"It all depends on how you approach it mentally' says Stuart. 'I say to my players don't look at it as a whole set of six. Just say to yourself I have to make a tackle here, just one tackle. You never see a set of six where one player makes all the tackles - it gets shared around. You only have to make one tackle, or sometimes two.

So by cutting your processes down to achieve the result the entire team benefits.

If they (the opposition) get another set of six at the end of the set then you have to say to yourself it's time to make another tackle. And it just keeps going until they either score or you get the ball back.

It's a contest.............. IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR COACHING YOU MUST HAVE RLCM DVDs, RLCM CD-ROMs and RLCM eBOOKS COLLECTION.

Saints' stadium plans go to Government Office for approval By Jon Land - The St Helens rugby league stadium plans have been signed off today by St Helens Council and sent to Government Office.

This follows extensive dialogue between the Council and Health and Safety Executive in Bootle who have now agreed that the Jackson Street gas-holder does not fall within the stadium consultation zone and a risk assessment will not be required to satisfy the HSE.

Council Leader Brian Spencer hailed the news as "tremendous," adding: "It is now in the hands of the Government to consider the decision of St.Helens Council and enable the developer to get on with building the stadium."

On May 20 councillors gave a resounding thumbs up to the stadium. The triple planning application is from developer Langtree, retailer Tesco and housebuilder Taylor Wimpey plc. The application, one of the biggest received by the Council, will bring a massive town centre regeneration.

It will transform the currently derelict 46-acre former United Glass site in St Helens into a £25-million 18,000 capacity stadium, with a mix of seating and standing, for St Helens Rugby League Club and a multi-million pound Tesco Extra.

The town's current Tesco outlet on Chalon Way will then be redeveloped into alternative retail outlets, further regenerating the town centre. As part of a separate plan, a high quality residential area will be built by Taylor Wimpey plc, replacing the historic Knowsley Road which has been Saints' home for 116 years.

The application, lodged with the Authority last June, came in 18 boxes containing more than 100 individual documents, is one of the biggest application ever seen in the Borough.

Some documents were provided in paper while others were on CD and range from site location, site layout, elevational plans and landscaping proposals. Others included environmental plans, transport, flood risk and noise assessments.

Since the date of submission there has been constant dialogue with the club and developers, and assessment of the nature and content of the information submitted.

Site visits have also been carried out to appraise the proposals against development plans and national policy and have had to disseminate the responses received via the usual planning public consultation process. 24dash.com

Changes in the NSW Blues team for game two
NSW State of Origin selectors have announced two changes in the Blues side for game two of the series against Queensland next Wednesday in Brisbane.

Newcastle's Ben Cross has been ruled out with a thumb injury and will be replaced by his teammate Steve Simpson. And Knights Kurt Gidley will take Dragons' Ben Hornby's position on the bench, after recovering from a broken cheekbone.

But more changes could be forced upon the Blues as St George Illawarra captain Mark Gasnier battles to be fit for game two with a hamstring injury. Amongst the best players for the Blues in their game one win Gasnier, who missed last weekend's game against South Sydney will need to prove his fitness before taking the field.

Another player the Blues camp may need to cover is Parramatta's Jarryd Hayne, after he was charged with a grade 2 dangerous throw from Friday night's round 12 clash with the Broncos. Hayne's will contest the charge on Wednesday night. Read and listen more

Giants job interest huge - Davy - Huddersfield Giants chairman Ken Davy has said there has been a lot of interest in the club's vacant head coach job.

The Giants sacked Jon Sharp after five years in charge on Monday.

"Within an hour of the news Jon had left we had expressions of interest from several people from here and in Australia," Davy told BBC Radio Leeds.

"We shouldn't be amazed by the interest as we have a great infrastructure, squad and facilities."

Davy added: "That interest has continued over the last 36 hours."

Sharp's reign at the Galpharm Stadium came to an end after a run of just one win in seven Super League matches, the West Yorkshire club are now third from bottom of the table.

"It was an incredibly tough decision and one not taken lightly. It was a conversation with Jon I hoped we'd never have.

"We had to take a view on how the club could move forward more effectively. The club is bigger than any one man."
The Giants had a similar poor run last season but regrouped to claim a top-six place.

"Last year during our bad period we were only losing those matches by the odd point.

"That's a very different situation to us being nilled at Harlequins and Catalan Dragons this season. Jon was an excellent coach but the challenge for someone coming in is that they needed to see the big picture.

"Our position in the table at the same time last year was significantly better than it is currently."

In his five years at the Galpharm Stadium, Sharp guided the Giants to the Challenge Cup final, in 2006, and their first ever top-six finish last season.

"Jon was an excellent coach but the challenge for someone coming in is that they need to see the big picture.

"They need to excel at man management in terms of getting the best from good players."

Meanwhile the French national rugby union team's defensive expert, Dave Ellis, has emerged as a surprise candidate.

The 51-year-old Yorkshireman told the Huddersfield Daily Examiner he would be keen to return to rugby league.

"Rugby union has been a constant for me for in recent years but I've certainly kept my hand in when it comes to league.

"I'm well qualified in terms of coaching certificates, I see a lot of matches, both in person and on television, and I'd certainly fancy coaching in the Super League.

"There's bags of potential at Huddersfield, they've come on in leaps and bounds during the Super League era and the challenge of taking them on further would be very appealing." Read more

Balmain Tigers den saved Council backs club's development By Justin Vallejo - The Balmain Tigers will live to roar another day after Leichhardt Council last night paved the way for the club's $130 million redevelopment.

On the brink of financial ruin, the Tiger's last hopes of survival have been placed in the major overhaul of their deteriorating leagues club.

The council's decision before club legends and supporters, including Paul Sironen, Dawn Fraser and Thomas Keneally, to amend the site's planning controls means the Tigers, after four years waiting, can begin seeking approval for the development.

"The Balmain Leagues Club is at its D-day. It is at a crisis point and if it doesn't go through we are in all sorts," Tigers director Benny Elias told the meeting.

"In the 50s, 60s, and 70s no-one wanted to live in Balmain. We have been here through good and bad. If we don't move with the times we've got our heads in the sand."

Without the club's annual grant to the merged West Tigers NRL team, the Tigers could be forced out of the joint venture - placing the future of the entire franchise in doubt. Read more

Lockyer back to boost Maroons - News of Darren Lockyer's return to the Queensland side for State of Origin II in Brisbane next week certainly overshadowed any team headlines New South Wales could muster.

The 31-year-old Lockyer, a veteran of 27 Origin encounters, was sorely missed in the first match in Sydney as Queensland, with the out-of-position Karmichael Hunt filling in at five-eighth, fell to an 18-10 defeat.

But he convinced selectors of his fitness during Brisbane's NRL clash with Parramatta last Friday night, setting up the last-minute win with a wonderful kick, and will resume his partnership with Johnathan Thurston.

The Blues, on the other hand, called up the Newcastle duo of Steve Simpson and Kurt Gidley while also sticking by in-doubt pair Jarryd Hayne and Mark Gasnier.

Hayne will appear before an NRL judiciary hearing tomorrow night and seek a downgrade for his lifting tackle on Brisbane lock Tonie Carroll while Gasnier will be given every opportunity to prove he has overcome a hamstring strain.

The inclusion of Simpson on the bench in place of injured teammate Ben Cross was a bolt from the blue. The Knights forward has missed much of the season so far with injury but has always performed well at representative level. He was, reportedly, in a four-way battle with Brent Kite, Luke Bailey and Mark O'Meley for the role.

The selection of Gidley in place of Ben Hornby would have come as welcome relief to the utility after he was cruelly ruled out of Origin I when he fractured his cheekbone on the eve of selection.

Gidley was believed to be the Blues selectors' first choice halfback ahead of the opening game, but with Peter Wallace enjoying a sensational debut in the No.7, the versatile Gidley will now take on the utility role off the bench.
Blues coach Craig Bellamy said he didn't think match fitness would be an issue with Gidley.

"It will have only been three weeks, he's regarded as the fittest player in the game, we don't think it's going to be a big issue for us," Bellamy said.

Canberra centre Joel Monaghan has also joined the camp as cover for Gasnier, who will be given until Friday to prove his fitness.

Gasnier vowed to put his teammates first and rule himself out if he doesn't recover "100 per cent''.

"Origin is not a game where you can go in 80 per cent, even 90 per cent,'' said Gasnier, who received an initial diagnosis of a two to three week lay-off.

"If you're not 100 per cent by early in the week and get a proper preparation for an Origin game, I don't think it's fair on yourself or the team to go in that way.

While he was desperate to play in the match, Gasnier rated himself a 50-50 chance of playing and said he wanted do the right thing by his teammates, especially Monaghan.

In other Queensland team news, Justin Hodges will miss the remainder of the series after being suspended for six matches for his dangerous throw on Eels hooker Mark Riddell last Friday night. He has been replaced by young Broncos winger Darius Boyd.

Brent Tate will move from the wing to cover for Hodges in the centres.

Lockyer's return forces Origin I five-eighth Karmichael Hunt to the bench, ousting utility PJ Marsh from the squad.

Veteran New Zealand Warriors captain Steve Price returns to Origin action after a recent comeback from a knee injury and Carl Webb has been dropped to make way.

Meanwhile, Ashley Harrison comes onto the bench in place of the axed Jacob Lillyman. Read more
