League players warned over long-term NRL contracts By Stuart Honeysett - A prominent leagues club official has urged players signing long-term contracts with Sydney-based clubs to seek financial guarantees or risk being left out of pocket.

St George leagues club general manager Danny Robinson delivered the grim forecast yesterday following a meeting of concerned licensed club bosses last Friday.

The meeting was organised in response to the crippling effects the NSW Government's increase in poker machine tax is having on the bottom line of leagues clubs. It also came three days after NRL chief executive David Gallop told a meeting of football club chief executives that some Sydney clubs were facing extinction unless the game found new revenue streams.

"The problem as I see it is we've got football clubs out there negotiating contracts with players from three years out from now," Robinson said. "That concerns me. If I was looking at signing with certain clubs I'd want bank guarantees about getting paid. You'd like to think the club that you signed with is going to be there in three years' time and still able to honour the contract."

Gallop said Robinson's caution was a sign of the times.

"That would be an extreme measure but highlights the uncertainty that leagues clubs are feeling about their funding of football clubs," Gallop said.

"Playing contracts are there to give certainty in an otherwise uncertain world of injuries, form slumps, etc. The last thing players should be forced to worry about is whether they'll be paid."

The Weekend Australian reported the two clubs under the most pressure were Cronulla and Penrith, while several are on the borderline including the Dragons, South Sydney, Manly, Parramatta and Wests Tigers.

Sharks Test coach Ricky Stuart wrote in his weekly newspaper column that the ongoing concerns about the game's financial health had prompted him to address the Sharks board to ensure his players' futures were safe.

Cronulla has representative players Greg Bird and Paul Gallen on its books and last month signed Sydney Roosters forward Anthony Tupou to a five-year deal worth an estimated $2 million.

The last time a club folded and players were affected financially was in 2001 when the Northern Eagles collapsed and administrators were called in. It took several years before players received their full entitlements.

Robinson described last Friday's meeting as positive and said a sub-committee consisting of himself, Penrith's Glenn Matthews and Parramatta's Denis Fitzgerald was formed to address the issue.

The sub-committee has already recruited two consultancy firms to prepare an independent report for NSW Premier Morris Iemma to show the debilitating effects of the poker machine tax.

Warrington 28 Castleford 36 - Basement boys Castleford piled the pressure on Warrington boss Paul Cullen after snatching a dramatic victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The Wolves were jeered off the pitch after throwing away a 28-18 lead with only 10 minutes remaining.

The Tigers raced over for three tries in four minutes from Michael Wainwright, Luke Dorn and Stuart Donlan to go ahead 30-28.

Angry fans stayed behind after the final hooter chanting: "We want Cullen out."

Warrington's misery was completed when Aussie Dorn intercepted Michael Monaghan's pass to race almost the full length of the field in the last minute.

Basement boys Cas deservedly led 14-10 at half-time before the Wolves hit back - only to throw away the victory.

Warrington, whose last away win was a 34-31 victory at Castleford in March, went into the clash missing only Rob Parker apart from long-term casualties Chris Bridge, Stuart Reardon, Paul Wood and Paul Johnson.

Castleford were without first-choice half-backs Anthony Thackeray and Aussie Brent Sherwin with Ryan McGoldrick and Dorn switching positions to plug the gap.

Cas were still searching for their first away win since returning to the top flight with their four points from shock home victories against pace-setters Leeds and St Helens.

Strong-running centre Michael Shenton caused problems from the start for Warrington who were relieved video ref Ben Thaler disallowed a Peter Lupton try from a towering McGoldrick kick.

Wolves' joy was short-lived with Donlan brushing off Chris Riley with ease for 18-year-old Richard Owen to cross in the corner after only five minutes.

Cas piled on the pressure and on their first raid Riley was bundled into touch on the second tackle.

It was no surprise when Cas grabbed the second try with Shenton taking Joe Westerman's pass to go over.

Westerman added the touchline conversion to make it 10-0 before a touch of class from Vinnie Anderson finally opened Warrington's account after 25 minutes with his solo try converted by Chris Hicks.

The Wolves drew level almost immediately with Riley collecting a perfectly-judged Lee Briers kick to force his way over in the corner.

Warrington would have gone ahead for the first time had Martin Gleeson not spilled Monaghan's pass with the line open following a surging Briers break.

It proved costly with Cas ahead 14-10 at the interval after Westerman and Shenton again combined for Adam Fletcher to squeeze over in the corner.

Smart passing from Monaghan and Hicks enabled Riley to bag his second try, converted by Hicks, to make it 16-14 before Cas were reduced to 12 men with Ned Catic sin-binned for interference.

Monaghan's long pass immediately sent Kevin Penny scooting over with Hicks' conversion easing the Wolves' nerves at 22-14.

Catic was still absent when Hicks raced over for his 15th try of the season before Wainwright cut the gap to 28-18.

Then Dorn and Donlan went over with Westerman and Craig Huby tagging on the conversions to sink Warrington.

Dorn's second try added the final insult, and there was more misery as Penny left the field on a stretcher in the last minute. Read more

Crisis as Bunnies boil over By Josh Massoud - South Sydney's revolution under Peter Holmes a Court fizzled out last night after the Rabbitohs co-owner was dumped as chairman by business partner Russell Crowe. Cooling relations between the pair reached freezing point yesterday when the Hollywood star sensationally replaced the millionaire businessman with the same two administrators who endorsed their $3 million buy-out just two years ago.

And the shake-up reached the field, with premiership-winning coach John Lang brought in as football consultant to aid the struggling Jason Taylor.

The Rabbitohs sit a distant last on the NRL table with just one win in 10 games.

Less than two years after handing the foundation club to Crowe and Holmes a Court, Sydney lawyer Nick Pappas was returned as Souths chairman at a landmark board meeting yesterday.

Pappas was appointed after spending the past two weeks as a go-between for both owners, whose feud degenerated to the point where they no longer speak face-to-face.

Mr Pappas will be joined at the top by reincarnated CEO Shane Richardson, who incredibly stood down just seven months ago because he didn't feel equipped to run the Rabbitohs as a business.

The duo held the same positions when Crowe and Holmes a Court bought Souths in March 2006. Both Pappas and Richardson urged Rabbitohs members to back the bid, citing fears the club would go broke and perish unless it was privatised.

But just last week, Mr Holmes a Court warned he could not guarantee the club's survival following a $4.2 million loss in 2006/07. That scary public statement was believed to be the final straw for Crowe, who was already at loggerheads with Holmes a Court over a number of decisions he had made.

Holmes a Court always intended to hand in his chairmanship - but not until the end of this season. His demise was suddenly complete yesterday, with the remaining seven directors convinced the club's balance had skewed too far in favour of business over football. He will remain as a director and Souths ownership structure does not change.

The reappointment of Pappas and Richardson, however, raises the question of why go back to the very pair who ran the club to the point at which they urged members to sell 75 per cent for $3 million.

When asked by The Daily Telegraph last night, Crowe simply responded: "It is the sensible thing to do."

In a statement released by the club, he added: "The reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated.

"Today the board applauded Peter's achievements in lifting the club and collectively we thanked him for his gargantuan effort over the past two years.

"Right now it's my belief that what South Sydney needs is continuity, knowledge and experience that both Nick Pappas and Shane Richardson bring.

"Both men understand how to take advantage of the progress the club has made."

Crowe returned from the US a month ago and immediately took a hands-on approach in turning the side around. Read more

Souths coach berates Crowe - THE Souths coach, Jason Taylor, was swearing and shaking his head. The Hollywood actor Russell Crowe listened, stony-faced and chain-smoking.
Richardson back in the hottest seat of all - SHANE RICHARDSON took his place back in the hot seat as South Sydney chief executive yesterday and immediately promised that the Rabbitohs would survive - without having to take the National Rugby League's $8 million bait and relocate to Gosford.
Buy George: I'll pay $3m for Central Coast Bunnies, says Piggins - SOUTH Sydney stalwart George Piggins has offered to buy back the famous foundation club from celebrity owners Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court on the conditions the club bases itself in Gosford and refunds him the purchase price out of the NRL's promised relocation grant.
It's back to the future as everything old is new again - JUST two years after South Sydney members voted to give control of the club to Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court, the Rabbitohs have gone back to the future with the appointment of Shane Richardson as chief executive and Nicholas Pappas as chairman yesterday.

Jason Taylor: I'm not under threat from John Lang By Paul Kent - Jason Taylor arrived at the loneliest job in sport yesterday to be told he had an offsider. No job is more friendless than that of a losing NRL coach, but by late yesterday afternoon former premiership-winning coach John Lang had been hired as Souths' football consultant.

Lang's hiring capped one of the biggest mid-season shake-ups to hit an NRL club in years.

Along with Lang, former chairman Nick Pappas was reappointed to replace departing chairman Peter Holmes a Court and Shane Richardson was appointed the new chief executive.

Richardson will leave his job as football director to resume the role he stood down from last year.

Taylor acknowledged Lang's appointment would be perceived as Holmes a Court and Russell Crowe's nervous response to the Rabbitohs' last placing on the NRL ladder.

He debunked the fears.

"I don't feel any threat whatsoever," he said.

A proud man, an ambitious coach, Taylor said Lang's role would more closely resemble the role Richardson has vacated than an overseer of the head coach.

"I know I am the head coach and I know I am doing the job," he said. "You can't worry about what other people think."

Taylor walked out of a lengthy meeting at Souths' headquarters yesterday to grant his only interview on the battles the club is currently going through.

Lang's hiring as football consultant and the reappointment of Pappas and Richardson had yet to be announced.

But buoyed by a stronger showing against Melbourne last Saturday, Taylor was quietly confident the club would soon begin to turn its poor form around.

He also remained adamant that any manoeuvring at executive level was having no ill-effects on performance.

He also spelled out how much - and how little - input Lang would have in the day-to-day coaching of the team.

"It needs to be made clear his role and how it's going to work," Taylor said. "He is going to be someone for me to have a chat to about how things are going and about what we're doing.

"A bit of a sounding board.

"But he is also going to be having a look at a lot of structures in and around the club.

"It's a very broad role he is going to have."

Lang last night refused to comment until he has spoken to the players, outlining his role.

He will oversee the club's structure and provide advice to Taylor.

"It will contain very little coaching," Taylor said.

The mid-season shake-up is the Rabbitohs' bold bid to turn around their poor fortunes, the club headed for another loss on top of last year's $4 million shortfall.

Coupled with the poor performance of the team, which comes after making last year's playoffs, the problem is only exacerbated.

Holmes a Court confirmed last week that he and Crowe would not endlessly pour money into the club, which has struggled to turn a profit for much of the past 20 years.

Following Holmes a Court's revelation, Taylor addressed his players to assure them their contracts were not under threat.

"JT gave us a few reassuring words," said injured star Craig Wing.

"Not that we were thinking about it, but he said if you are thinking about it don't worry, you will all be all right."

Taylor told them to ignore the club's off-field struggles and remain concentrating on football.

Taylor denied the off-field rumblings had affected the team's performance.

"It doesn't affect us in any way," he said. "I told them late last week that they don't need to worry about the future of the club and all we need to do is concentrate on playing footy.

"Everybody knows if the team plays well then the pressure comes off in a lot of areas. We just need to concentrate on that."

Taylor said the Rabbitohs' biggest problem this season was the ground they had surrendered to opposition teams at the start of the year when Holmes a Court and Crowe took the Rabbitohs to Jacksonville for a promotional game.

"Our trip to Jacksonville put a big dent in our season because we lost three weeks of our pre-season program," Taylor said.

"Any club that takes three weeks out of the program at that time of the year is going to be on the back foot." Read more

Matthew Elliott speaking at the ARL High Performance Conference
Crowe's company ruined Souths By Ray Chesterton - Silence on the set . . . lights, camera, action. Cue Mr Crowe and . . . cut. Sorry Mr Crowe, we expected you to speak. We don't make silent movies any more. Words are what we all want to hear from the now famously silent Russell - but not from his seemingly former partner in naivety Peter Holmes a Court, whose credibility would be an interesting test for a Newspoll.

It is Crowe who owes supporters a full explanation of the pain he inflicted on Souths because of his lack of proven business skills in sport and the illusionary world he created in supporters mind that has now collapsed.

Souths, now desperate for ideas, cash and inspiration after 10 losses in 11 games, have gone back to the future, restoring football club chairman Nick Pappas and CEO Shane Richardson.

They were in charge until Crowe and Holmes a Court moved them aside after they took over. There was not enough room for four on the white horse.

They forgot that Souths is a club of the people. For many supporters it is a way of life, providing the only chance for social contact in a low socio-economic area.

Crowe and Holmes a Court have not just desecrated a sporting icon.

They have stolen a way of life from thousands of people whose feverish support goes back to 1908.

They deserve full disclosure of how two cowboys rode into town and dismantled all that was emotionally satisfying and wonderfully enduring about Souths and substituted hysteria and fear of the future in the guise of modernisation and success.

Crowe had no problem finding the words to explain his passion for Souths when he plotted his takeover from club legend George Piggins.

And he managed to push his message to selected journalists over the best meals a five star Sydney restaurant could manage.

He would talk about side-stepping telegraph posts around Redfern Oval, across the road from Souths Leagues Club and how Souths were his club.

The telegraph posts are still there but Redfern Oval and the leagues club are not. They were closed by Crowe and Holmes a Court under a futuristic scheme that involved using sterile and uninviting Homebush Stadium as a home ground.

Also to be considered is the silence of the lambs who were voting members of Souths and were led to the slaughter listening to the impossible dreams of Russell and Holmes a Court.

Rugby league wants to hear Crowe's version of how Souths, under his watch, looks like the victim of a savagely callous hit and run accident who will be pronounced DOA as soon as the ambulance gets to hospital.

We want to know how Crowe feels after draining the most famous sporting club in Australia of its passion, its culture, its neighbourhood, its playing ground and its leagues club until it was a hollow carcass shadowed by financial buzzards. Crowe trampled on Souths 100-year-old heart and soul the way he trampled on his mates as a psychotic skinhead in Romper Stomper.

They got up again because it was only a movie. Souths may not. It has never been a script to them.

Crowe has a public history of good ideas being unfulfilled and relationships ending badly.

Crowe's relationship with former Test forward Mark Carroll was so strong the Oscar-winner hired him as a minder and adviser.

On the set of Crowe's movie Cinderella Man, they argued and blows were exchanged.

"We both wore badges of dishonour for a day," Crowe said.

Carroll is no longer his minder.

A couple of years back Crowe was publicly enthusing about a film he would make in Australia with Nicole Kidman called Eucalyptus and a place in the history of local film successes. There was a dispute over the script and Crowe departed.

It was shot with Kidman and Hugh Jackman as leads and opens soon as Australia.

There were other severances as well - with his publicity agent in Australia and a freelance journalist he hired to reshape his image.

Now he's fallen out with Holmes a Court, who does not want to spend any more of his money on Souths. Once close, their talks are now brief.

No doubt there have been lengthier, more stable relationships in Crowe's working life but the volatile break-ups have been there as well.

You wonder if the savagery of what has happened gnaws at Crowe's soul.

Does he really understand the damage and humiliation he and Holmes a Court have piled upon such a monument to sporting history?

Or have they already dismissed Souths from their list of concerns the way Crowe would move on after a bad movie review or Holmes a Court a failed business deal?

For both there is always something new up ahead.

Souths are not so lucky.

Souths are not a celluloid creation on a film set. They were, and hopefully still are, unique.

Crowe is now in a hell of a mess.

His perceived failure to make Souths viable taints his image as a man of the people. His films will still do well. The quality of his acting is unchanged. He is still powerful and engaging.

It will just be hard to reconcile such a proclaimed lover of the game with what happened at Souths. Read more

Sonny Bill erupts in Bulldogs win By Todd Balym - After weeks of pressure, Bulldogs superstar Sonny Bill Williams erupted with an explosion of anger and a punch thrown at Cronulla prop Ben Ross in his side's upset 30-22 win. Williams reacted angrily to being pushed from behind by Ross after his successful one-on-one strip was ruled as a penalty in the 58th minute at ANZ Stadium.

Williams stood to his feet to first throw the ball at the Sharks forward before taking a wild swing.

Referee Tony Archer intervened and gave the wayward Kiwi international a stern warning about his behaviour, particularly after his earlier face-to-face confrontation with fiery Cronulla forward Greg Bird in the final minute before half-time.

It has been a tumultuous period for Williams, who is reportedly looking to get out of the final four years of his five-year $2 million deal with the Bulldogs to chase more money in rugby union and his actions against the Sharks could give an insight into his frustrations.

"Time for you to listen,'' said Archer to Williams.

"I gave you the benefit before half-time. You go one more time and I will sit you down.''

The brain explosion from Williams clearly did not affect his ability to play football, as he scored a first-half try and was a constant menace in attack as the Bulldogs caused a five-tries-to-four boilover against the Sharks.

Williams denied the speculation over his future had been hard on him.

"Not too tough at all,'' he said.

"Just sticking to what I know to do and that's play footy. Make sure I do the little things right and be as professional as I can.''

The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Bulldogs and ruined Cronulla's chance to move from eighth into the top four on the NRL table.

Bulldogs full-back Cameron Phelps, who departs to join Wigan on Tuesday, produced a superb swansong with a hand in two tries for centre Tim Winitana while five-eighth Daniel Holdsworth was also instrumental in attack, setting up tries and scoring his own solo 50-metre effort before limping off with a corked quadricep in the second half.

Winitana's second try in the 45th minute appeared to create a match-winning 24-4 lead over the low-scoring Sharks, but Cronulla were not finished as tries to Danny Nutley and Brett Kimmorley within seven minutes set up an enthralling finish.

Dogs captain Andrew Ryan stemmed the fightback by completing a 60-metre play to give his side 14 points of breathing space before Cronulla centre Ben Pomeroy stormed over in the 69th minute as the Sharks refused to lie down.

Sharks full-back Brett Kearney suffered a first half ankle injury and did not return to the field.

Dogs upset Sharks - The Bulldogs held off Cronulla to post a 30-22 win in their round 11 showdown at Sydney's Olympic stadium this evening. It was only the Bulldogs' fourth victory of the season and the five tries to four result extinguished the Sharks' hopes of moving into the top four to be alongside the Sydney Roosters, Gold Coast and Manly on 16 points. The Sharks were the first to make an entry on the scoresheet when Fraser Anderson touched down in the fifth minute of play but from that point, it was all one-way traffic in the first half with the Bulldogs racing to an 18-4 lead at the break.Read and listen more

RLCM Extract from Yearbook 4 - Sports Psychology Lends Itself to Every Sport.

With Wendy Swift a principal consultant for the company Swift and Associates, Performance Consultants, is a registered psychologist.

Written by Hanna McCarthy - RLCM Writer

Whether it be at a grass roots level, or within a professional arena, the psyche of any sport's person undoubtedly has a great impact upon their individual performance.

By definition, sport psychology is a specialization within psychology that seeks to understand psychological/mental factors that affect performance in sports, physical activity and exercise
and apply these to enhance individual and team performance.

It deals with increasing performance by managing emotions and minimizing the psychological effects of injury and poor performance.

Wendy Swift, a principal consultant for the company Swift and Associates, Performance Consultants, is a registered psychologist as well as being Director of Sport Psychology Services for the company.

Essentially, she deals with program development, client consultations as well as promoting the based learning of sports psychology.

Swift identifies that there is one primary area involved with promoting a healthy psyche for an athlete's; motivation.

However, it's not that simple. The motivation Swift is referring to is the point at which the athlete feels he or she is performing at an optimum level.

Before they reach this stage, they need to have an 'action' plan, as well as a series of process goals. This works in conjunction with the flow state.

The flow state is the mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing, characterized by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity.

Swift believes: "If we want a flow state experience to occur, the challenge has to be equivalent to the preparation and ability of the athlete."

In short, the challenge or activity the athlete is participating in must be in line with the athlete's own ability and the training they have been doing to prepare for the event.

If the athlete feels they have reached a stage where they feel they are completely in control, then they can become immersed in their performance. If they allow themselves to start thinking about their performance while competing, then they cannot achieve within the flow state.

For example, if they start thinking in such a way that they convince themselves their coach will be disappointed if they lose or even if they become angry with themselves with their lack of preparation, they cannot be immersed in the activity.

The same pattern occurs when the athlete knows a significant person in their life is not going to be happy if they're not at their best.

The athlete cannot achieve a level of positive exhilaration at competing if they are distracted from what they are doing. If they are comfortable with their performance and training, however, they look forward to competing and can attain the state of total immersion.

As a result, they have a great time performing and they access the best of their training, which ultimately leads to success.

It's essential that the athlete must only be aware of the now, no past, only the future. If they detached from the process, then their results will demonstrate this.

"Obviously, if they're not thinking about the outcome, they're not in the moment."

Swift explains: "If we [as psychologists, coaches etc.] keep those concepts in mind, it's likely we can guide our kids [or elite athletes] to be in the best state for that particular performance."

Our "Legends of League" Grand Final Harbour Cruise is a truly special day where you will lunch with some of the greats of our game. The weekend finishes off with the great spectacle of the NRL Grand Final complete with luxury coach match transfers.
