Sydney clubs will die, warns Gallop By Brad Walter - NRL chief executive David Gallop has warned that some Sydney clubs face extinction.
Gallop made the dire warning at a meeting of NRL club chief executives in Sydney yesterday that focused on finding ways to boost the game's finances.
But as the CEOs discussed issues such as increasing memberships, the majority of Sydney clubs confirmed that funding from their leagues clubs was nearing crisis point as a result of the NSW Government's increased poker machine tax.
"We are working with the leagues club industry to provide clear projections but the message is coming through in no uncertain terms that some Sydney NRL clubs will die if things don't change," Gallop said.
"It is a matter that has been raised on any number of occasions but we are fast approaching a time when government needs to confront just how severe the situation is becoming. It won't just affect NRL supporters but will rob thousands of kids of an affordable chance to get out and play sport."
St George Illawarra have already been affected by a cut of $2 million to their annual leagues club grant and a number of other clubs face similar cutbacks.
The grim financial picture is not likely to result in the CEOs agreeing today to proposals to increase the payments to Origin players from $12,500 to $20,000 - or to play representative fixtures on weekends free of club games.
NSW coach Craig Bellamy and captain Danny Buderus yesterday said the strain being placed upon the game's elite players was forcing them out of the NRL at an earlier age.
"These guys that play Origin, they play 24 real tough games, then probably their teams are in the semi-finals and then they go on tours at the end of the year, that's so hard on our elite players - those players get burnt out before their time," Bellamy said. "It ends up costing them financially because it cuts one or two years off their career." Read more League HQ

Duel in the crown: Buderus v Smith will decide Origin winner - THEY have stood across the ruck from each other for 13 State of Origin matches now, rarely fixing eyes but acutely aware of their rivalry and responsibility, one man having what the other wants. Thaiday's career crashing, banging, bouncing back in right direction - WHILE some like to think they put the air in the football, Sam Thaiday certainly gives it the bounce. We see this every time he bounds and bounces into a game - and subsequently an opponent. Part wrecking ball, part pinball, the laws of physics are tested when he hits. Crash, bang, bounce. South Sydney deny fallout By Dean Ritchie - SOUTH Sydney executive director Peter Holmes a Court last night admitted he has had "frequent disagreements" with co-owner Russell Crowe - but denied the pair had fallen out.
His comments come amid on-going suggestions about a rift between the high-profile owners, who historically bought the famous club two years ago.
Holmes a Court, who will shortly leave as club executive director but remain a board member, did not attend Monday's night lop-sided loss to Canberra in Canberra, but Crowe did.
Sources within the game claim the friendship between Holmes a Court and Crowe has certainly cooled this year. "I wouldn't call it a fallout,'' Holmes a Court said. "We are working on the hard issues. We have frequent disagreements.''
Pressed again by The Daily Telegraph on whether there was tension, Holmes a Court said: "I have known Russell for seven years. He is a very intense person with an incredible work ethic. We don't always agree.
"But I don't think it's a rift and I don't believe it's a rift. I can't respond to hypotheticals.''
Sources claim Crowe was frustrated at Souths' horror start to the season while he was stranded in the US filming. The players were also upset about the pressure they played under earlier this season when Holmes a Court made some bold statements in the media.
"No doubt if I was sitting in America - a long way from every game - I would find it incredibly frustrating,'' Holmes a Court said.
"I spoke to Russell and we traded text messages until very late last night. These are very challenging times and we have to find a way through. I'm glad he's back and he is giving the side a lot of energy and focus. That is great for team morale.''
The Daily Telegraph yesterday emailed Crowe about the situation but he did not reply. The Rabbitohs are outright last on the NRL competition table, having won just one game this season.
The club is now $1.70 favourites for the wooden spoon, according to TAB Sportsbet.
Holmes a Court said he would continue to work with Crowe to re-establish Souths and had no plans to walk away. "Yes, we will continue to work together,'' he said. "I will be stepping down at some point as executive chairman but will remain a director.
"It is hard work at the moment and these are very testing times. But it is just as hard for those long-term fans and for the players. It is generally hard work and there is heaps of pain.''
Then asked would he remain at the club, he said: "I'm an investor and I'm a fan. Those aren't about to change anytime soon.''
Shane Richardson, Souths director of football operations, was unaware of any drama between the club's two owners. "I don't make comments about those sort of things,'' Richardson said. "They're the owners. Ring them and ask. That's not my area.'' Read more Courier Mail

GC Titans - Conn sidelined for a month By Daniel Meers - Gold Coast Titans backrower Daniel Conn will miss at least the next month with a shoulder injury in a blow to the NRL premiership leaders. The news came just a week after Conn returned from a hamstring strain which had him sidelined from rugby league for several weeks. Club medical staff believe four weeks is an optimistic prognosis and it could in fact take longer.
The talented 22-year-old suffered the injury during the last tackle of his comeback match against the Bulldogs on Friday night. Preston Campbell will return to the side for Sunday's match against the Wests Tigers as will Mat Rogers who had been suspended for the past month. Brenton Bowen is expected to move to the wing. NRL CEOs focus on membership and venue management to grow the game - A special meeting of National Rugby League Chief Executives has focused on membership and venue management as key areas needed to grow the game's financial strength.
At the same time, the overwhelming majority of clubs have endorsed the view that the NSW Government has failed to recognize the urgent financial pressures building on Rugby League clubs at both NRL and junior level through taxation strategies which have targeted leagues clubs.
While today's meeting was a pro-active exercise in planning the game's long term growth strategies, the majority of Sydney Clubs made it clear that their Leagues Club funding was nearing crisis point.
"We are working with the Leagues club industry to provide clear projections but the message is coming through in no uncertain terms that some Sydney NRL clubs will die if things don't change," NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said today.
"It won't just affect NRL supporters but will rob thousands of kids of an affordable chance to get out and play sport.
"It is a matter that has been raised on any number of occasions but we are fast approaching a time when government needs to confront just how severe the situation is becoming.
"Ironically, in Victoria sports have in recent years received increasing funds from poker machine gaming and it is an important part of the ongoing finances of a number of those clubs."
The Queensland clubs today added their concern over the issue.
"It's an attitude that is in stark contrast to the Queensland government who see professional sport as a way of inspiring kids to get involved and to get active," Cowboys CEO Peter Parr said.
"They support stadiums, clubs like the Cowboys, the Broncos and the Titans and encourage the whole of the state to get behind Origin because it gets people excited about sport."
Today's meeting looked at substantial growth undertaken through the game's existing investment in club membership.
While some clubs have already seen membership bases rise to 10,000, there is a united view that the area needs further development.
"It's an area that we have invested in for a number of years and it's clear that we need to continue to grow further," Mr Gallop, said.
"Today showed that the game has made some important strides in terms of membership licensing and crowds, all of which have increased.
"But as we look to the next stage, we need to grow further and at an even faster rate."
The issue of maximizing venue allocation and revenue was identified as a key area in the future with the clubs agreeing that the NRL should be given the right to be a more active partner in the signing of future stadium agreements.
"There are some passionate and unfair issues raised around venues from time to time," Mr Gallop said.
"ANZ Stadium, the SFS, Suncorp and all our grounds - including venues such as the Central Coast - play an important role and we need to ensure that we are maximizing the return on our agreements and the best opportunities for fans."
Today's meeting heard that merchandise and licensing had been a huge growth area for the game with the NRL merchandise programme surpassing all other major Australian football codes.
"It's a sign of the enormous enthusiasm that is there for the game," NRL Director of Marketing and Commercial Mr Paul Kind said today.
"People are looking for ways to show their support for their team."
The CEO's have also looked closely at ways to ensue the game was maximizing its sponsorship returns across all properties.
The prospect of minimum sponsorship values and club benchmarking of sponsorship properties will be examined further at a marketing level.
The NRL is already committed to a greater investment in generating sponsorship opportunities across the game and in expanding its sponsorship team.
"It's an area in which we have already restructured extensively and we are looking to develop those new structures across the game," Mr Kind said.
The CEO's today also looked closely at ensuring that the sport received a fair return from sports betting. NRL Online

Catalans Academy win French national championship - For the third consecutive year the Catalans Dragons Academy won the French national championship against Lézignan 34 to 26.
This wonderful victory rewards the hard work made by the staff and the players but shows also the progress the Dragons did in the junior development. We hope to see really soon young academy players with the Dragons squad like Thomas Bosc, Gregory Mounis or Jérôme Guisset.
"This 3rd consecutive title shows how serious we take the development of our French young players. We have set up a strong junior development program with former Catalans players in the coaching staff (ie Pascal Jampy and Bruno Verges) and we hope some of the current junior will be soon ready to integrate our full time professional squad." Said Sebastien Munoz, football manager.
"Catalans Dragons current no 6 Thomas Bosc and Greg Mounis are both from this junior development program and won the junior academy championship few years ago." Catalans Dragons Online

Coaching a Country Football Team
Coach Ken Kennedy with Ashley Bradnam
When the local supporters of the Ivanhoes club in Cairns peeked in on new coach Ken Kennedy's initial training sessions with the club, few of them predicted the perrenial also-rans to be in for a successful season. 'Who is this bloke?' they would quip behind not- so-subtle muffled snickers, 'I've never seen anyone train a team like this before'.
Success has a canny knack of altering a fan's perspective. In his debut season with Ivanhoes, Kennedy steered the club to the Grand Final; not a bad feat considering they finished the year before with the wooden spoon.
The obvious question is how did he do it?
"It's not so much a question of how I did it", says Kennedy, "It's more a case of looking at the way country Rugby League clubs operate as a whole and then making the necessary changes to introduce a successful culture into the club".
According the Kennedy, one of the most important disciplines a coach must possess is time management.
With most country clubs operating on a restricted time frame (two or three training sessions maximum per week) the organised coach will have a better chance to get the most out of his players.
Correct and thorough planning and preparation starts with the head coach, who in turn is responsible for the men under him.
"You need to ask yourself, what role am I going to play at this club? Some coaches decide to only take control of the top team, where others elect to be responsible for all senior teams, which I think is a lot healthier.
"In my current position I have the role of Director of Coaching, and that gives me responsibility for the development of the club as a whole from the Under Sevens through to the A Grade. To be in such a big role, it is absolutely imperative that I have a good reliable support staff in place".
Kennedy concurs with the theory that a strong club is built from the ground up, Kennedy says one of his most satisfying achievements has been watching the juniors develop.
"The junior coaching has been my number one priority. We have introduced and carried out a number of coaching updates focussing on player's skill development and ensuring there is a good flow of skilled players moving through the grades. In a way it is insurance for the coming years.
"By teaching the players the correct aspects and skills as juniors, you don't have to go through it again when they reach senior level, when quite often the players have been taught incorrectly".
Kennedy implemented a thirty man A Grade squad and hired an assistant coach who he relied on for overlooking skill development, a weight coach for strength and power development and a Level One strength and conditioning coach to cover fitness. All lower grade coaches were able to join in on the top squads training to provide advice and to help them learn finer points.
"It was a genuine team effort and that's the way it needs to be", explains Kennedy "The role of the coach is a very demanding one, with responsibilities that go way beyond just turning up to training and on game day.
"The role of the country coach can be very rewarding. Over the years there has been many great players come out of the country competitions and make a name for themselves in the big leagues and with the guidance of qualified and well prepared coaches there should continue to be many more."
Every competition has clubs that struggle through the season, going from one demoralising loss to another. Ken Kennedy is proof they don't have to stay there, despite what the locals say......
