Improve your Coaching by NOT Coaching
From Sports Coaching Brain: Expert advice and tips for sports coaching success from Wayne Goldsmith
Click here for more Wayne Goldsmith articles.
You read right - improve your coaching by NOT coaching.
Coaching improves performance.
But too much coaching - over coaching - can have a negative influence on performance.
Who OVER coaches?
Typically five types of coaches OVER coach:
1. Young, inexperienced coaches who are trying too hard;
2. Coaches who lack real belief in themselves and who try to make up for it by giving too much information. These coaches will often want to be liked - and feel the more coaching they do, the more the athletes will like them;
3. Coaches who lack belief in their athletes and feel the need to control every element of preparation and performance;
4. Coaches who are being evaluated or assessed and aim to impress by being SEEN to control every element of the training session, i.e. they believe that great coaching is talking more;
5. Ego driven coaches who see athletes / players as a vehicle to promote themselves and their reputations.
There are many problems associated with OVER coaching.
Here are just ten:
1. All sports require athletes / players to take responsibility for decision making and problem solving in competition. A coach who has not allowed athletes to make decisions in training is setting them up to fail.
2. All sports require athletes / players to drive their own performance in competition. A coach who does not allow athletes / players to take responsibility for their own performance in training has not prepared them to win in competition.
3. Over coaching assumes the athletes / players can not contribute anything to the performance. In reality most of what we learn as coaches is from working with, listening to and observing athletes.
4. Over coaching says "This is my team, my performance" - whereas most successful teams are ones where the coach leads but the athletes / players drive the performance: ownership of the performance is shared.
5 Giving too much information at inappropriate times can confuse athletes / players causing them to make errors and bad decisions.
6. Coaching is about creating independent athletes / players. Over coaching creates a dependence on the coach for decision making and problem solving which is performance suicide.
7. Over coaching stifles creativity and on field genius. Quality Coaching should provide opportunity for creativity and genius to be expressed through great performances.
8. Over coaching creates frustration in the athletes / players and assistant coaches, staff etc. Everyone in the performance team can contribute to the success of the group if given the right opportunity.
9. Over coaching can create anxiety and pressure - particularly when the over coaching comes in the final few days before a big competition. As a general rule, coach LESS as the competition gets closer.
10. Over coaching can send negative messages to the athletes / players of "panic" like "We have not done the preparation we need to be successful so I am going to keep coaching until the last minute".
So how can you avoid OVER COACHING?
1. Believe in yourself - all great coaching flows from self confidence and self belief.
2. Be SELFLESS - the opposite of selfish. Put the athletes / players first - and your own ego in your back pocket.
3. Coaching is a performance partnership. The more faith and belief you place in your athletes / players, the more you can both grow and improve.
4. Empower athletes / players to make decisions, make errors, solve problems, learn and grow in training. Provide them with a wide range of training experiences to teach better decision making.
5. Accept that all coaches - regardless of their level of performance and experience are LEARNERS. It does not matter if you have coached athletes to five gold medals at the Olympics or are a six times Premiership winning coach - coaching is life long learning and a career of ongoing development. Accept this - and the humility that comes with it.
Quality Coaching - Less is More

Michael Hagan has doubts over NSW halves By Neil Cadigan - Former Queensland coach Michael Hagan says NSW are taking an unnecessary gamble by throwing rookie halfback Peter Wallace into Origin I alongside "makeshift" five-eighth Greg Bird. It will be the Blues 11th halves combination in 13 Origin matches - an extraordinary statistic of instability since Brad Fittler and Andrew Johns first retired from representative football.
Hagan is the Maroons coach who in 2005 initiated the Darren Lockyer-Johnathan Thurston pairing that reigned for nine straight games until injury forced Lockyer out of next Wednesday's clash.
He says he would have gone with Brett Finch and Braith Anasta (and Bird at lock) because of their form and the fact they had played at Origin level before and plenty of times in the NRL for the Roosters.
"I wouldn't have blooded another halfback," said Parramatta coach Hagan. "Not with the pressure of losing the past two series and seeing all the pressure Jarrod Mullen was under when he was in this position a year ago.
"You just can't underestimate what a step up it is for a halfback with the media focus, pressure and the burden of the occasion.
"And by not having an out-and-out five-eighth in Greg Bird, Wallace will be under extra pressure - especially with his kicking game."
The Blues have used six five-eighths and seven halfbacks since the start of the 2004 series: Shaun Timmins, Brad Fittler, Trent Barrett, Braith Anasta, Mark Gasnier and Bird (five-eighths) and Craig Gower, Finch, Barrett, Brett Kimmorley, Johns, Mullen and now Wallace (halfbacks).
Only twice has the same pairing lasted two successive games - Anasta-Johns in 2005 (two wins) and Anasta-Finch in 2006 (win, loss).
Chairman of selectors Bob McCarthy admits it has been "worrying" that he has had to oversee a revolving door in the since the days when Johns controlled the Blues' on-field destiny.
But he denies that Bird at five-eighth alongside 28-game first-grader Wallace at halfback is a punt by selectors.
"It has been an unstable period but mostly caused by injuries not because we haven't had the talent," said McCarthy.
"The good thing is we have an outstanding crop of halfbacks coming for the future and more depth than people give us credit for.
"Anasta - who has played six of the last seven games for us - is still right in the picture but Greg Bird was man of the match in the last Origin game last year and has been outstanding in two Tests since - all at five-eighth."
Bird's Sharks and Test coach Ricky Stuart doesn't believe his selection at No. 6 will put unnecessary pressure on Wallace's kicking and organising game. He says Bird's kicking game is under-estimated and rapidly improving.
"Birdy is used to a dominating half inside him in Brett Kimmorley at Cronulla and for NSW last year and Cooper Cronk and Johnathan Thurston in his two Tests," said Stuart.
"He will have to step up his kicking but it is something he is working hard on and improving. Against that, his running game and ability to play at the line and through the line will worry the Queenslanders. "
Stuart admits NSW's shuffling of deck chairs in the halves has been a major downfall in recent years but he wouldn't keep the Bird-Wallace pairing together for stability alone. They have to perform, he says.
"I think NSW might be on the verge of a great era of halfbacks with Wallace, Mitchell Pearce, Todd Carney and Jarrod Mullen," said Stuart, a veteran of 14 Origin games and three man-of-the-match awards at halfback.
"I'm waiting to see who jumps out of the pack, takes ownership of the position and keeps it for quite a few series. The invitation is there for someone to say 'it's now my position, I can own Origin football, I can dominate at this level'." Read more Daily Telegraph

Hilder suspended for two matches - Newcastle Knights utility Matt Hilder will miss the next two matches after pleading guilty to a contrary conduct charge. Hilder was charged with making dangerous contact to Melbourne halfback Cooper Cronk after a kick, during Monday night's 18-4 loss to the Storm. Hilder would have receive a three week stint on the sidelines had he contested the charge and lost. Fellow Knights players Jarrod Mullen and Corey Paterson were also charged in the loss to the Storm but escaped suspension with early guilty pleas for their dangerous throw. Tommy Raudonikis scoffs at Willie Mason's enforcer reputation By Brent Read and Stuart Honeysett - NSW legend Tommy Raudonikis has kicked off the Blues' State of Origin campaign by questioning Willie Mason's reputation as an enforcer, claiming the controversial Sydney Roosters forward "wouldn't intimidate a fly".
Raudonikis, the NSW halfback and captain in the inaugural Origin game in 1980, urged Mason to bite his tongue and concentrate on football in the lead-up to the series opener at ANZ Stadium next Wednesday.
Raudonikis applauded the selection of Greg Bird and Paul Gallen, suggesting they would intimidate the Queensland side.
"If NSW is going to win, they have to aim up," Raudonikis said.
"Gallen and Bird ... I'm glad they have got them in the side because they make blokes look around and say 'hang on a minute, I have to be a bit careful here'.
"With Willie Mason they don't do that. He wouldn't intimidate a fly.
"How about him doing something instead of mouthing off? That's all he does. Let him aim up.
"If he does, that will set us on the way to winning."
While Raudonikis was happy to question Mason's credentials, he also endorsed the selection of Brisbane halfback Peter Wallace.
Wallace, plucked from the Broncos to make his Origin debut, will spend much of the lead-up to next week's game working with NSW legend Andrew Johns, one of the Blues' assistant coaches.
"He has to throw caution to the wind and whatever has a Maroon jersey, just knock it over," Raudonikis said.
"If he can get his hands on (Johnathan) Thurston, take him on. He's going into a war. I think he's going to handle it real well."
Asked what impressed him about Wallace, Raudonikis replied: "I have watched a little bit of him. I think he's going to go all right. He's cool-headed."
He wasn't the only former NSW halfback to praise Wallace.
Bulldogs great Steve Mortimer was confident Wallace would not be overawed by the occasion.
"Before you know it the game is over and it's quite intimidating," Mortimer said.
"The bottom line for Peter Wallace is he is such a cool, calm, collected customer and I've no doubt he has been the instrumental architect in attack for the Broncos this year.
"And he's got a slight advantage in that he's going to be playing against a number of his team-mates. And that won't be quite as intimidating as if he was still at Penrith."
Former Manly, NSW and Australia halfback Geoff Toovey, who was an assistant coach with the City side which included Wallace, said the newcomer is a quality player who would have nothing to worry about. The Australian

Skolars Prem 36 v 34 Elmbridge - Skolars overcame Elmbridge in a nail-biter at sun-soaked New River. Despite outscoring the home team 7 tries to 6, Elmbridges' failure to convert 4 of them ultimately cost them the game.
Skolars led 22-14 at halftime but the Eagles refused to buckle. On 55 mins the Skolars were 34-18 ahead and the game looked pretty safe but with their outstanding centre James Hunt (4tries) leading the way the eagles drew level at 34-34 with only 38 seconds on the clock.
A short kick-off saw the Skolars regain possession and two quick drives got them to 20 yards out. A neat chip over the defence by Michael Chan saw the ball rebound off fullback Mike Coates into his own player in an offside position. Leigh Nissen coolly slotted the penalty right on the siren
