Meninga backs Lockyer to make Origin return By Dan Koch Just 24 hours after undergoing surgery many suggested would keep him out of this year's State of Origin series, Queensland skipper Darren Lockyer has re-emerged as a pivotal part of the Maroons' campaign, with coach Mal Meninga tipping the champion five-eighth would be back to lead the side on to Suncorp Stadium for game two.
Speaking after the Broncos' loss to Manly on Sunday, Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett said the medical staff, headed by Peter Myers who performed the arthroscopic surgery, had estimated Lockyer would need up to six weeks' rehabilitation before returning to the field.
However, after speaking to Lockyer yesterday, Meninga said he expected the five-eighth to be ready for the Brisbane match on June 11. The first game will be played at Sydney's ANZ Stadium on May 21.
With that in mind, Meninga has asked Lockyer to join the Queensland squad whenever possible in the build-up to the series opener, an offer Lockyer has already indicated he is keen to take up.
"Well he is going to be around for game two and game three, so he is going to play a big role for us in the series," Meninga said.
"So, it makes sense to have him involved as much as possible. From a playing perspective it will help things along when he gets back on the training track.
"It's not just his playing ability, he is a really important part of what we do off the field too.
"Obviously he will be in Brisbane working on his rehab, but it will be good to have him around the camp when he can make it."
Lockyer was a forlorn figure after failing in his bid to overcome the complications he had suffered after undergoing a total knee reconstruction late last year in time to take his place as skipper of Australia's Test side for last Friday's historic Centenary Test match against New Zealand.
Described as a perfectionist by Bennett, Lockyer was clearly frustrated by the pain and inflammation he was feeling, which was preventing him from performing to his normally high standards.
On Sunday, Bennett said he was happy the success of the operation, in which some scar tissue build-up at the back of his knee was removed, would ease the fears and concerns Lockyer had fought for much of the pre-season.
Lockyer admitted the confidence of the surgeon that the problem had been corrected was a welcome relief.
"It just feels like a big weight off my shoulders," Lockyer said.
"Already I feel better about it. The doctors had a look and the reconstruction itself is really strong. So now it is just a case of taking the rehab one step at a time."
Lockyer said he had was not going to put himself under pressure by putting a time frame on when he would return to the playing arena, but said he expected to be back in full training with Brisbane within a fortnight.
"I will have to take it easy for a couple of days, but hopefully by the end of the week I will be up and about and go from there," he said.
"Hopefully I will be able to start running at some stage next week." Having started his Origin career at a time when NSW enjoyed a healthy dominance over the Maroons, Lockyer has revelled in Queensland's resurgence under Meninga, which has seen them claim the past two series.
He has developed strong friendships with Meninga and assistant coach Neil Henry, who has worked closely with Lockyer in developing game plans and strategies.
It is hardly surprising then that Lockyer is desperate to be a part of the Maroons' preparations, saying he will lend a hand where ever possible.
"We have a good core group of guys who have been together for a few years now and it will be good to see them again," Lockyer said.
"It is a special group and it is just great to be a part of it. If I can help out Mal or some of the boys while I am out injured, I'd certainly do what I could." The Australian

Bird bags Maroons forwards - NEW South Wales hasn't won an Origin series for two years but that hasn't stopped Greg Bird from firing an early shot across the bow of QLD's forward pack. Storm grind down plucky Knights - They were made to work hard for it but the Storm eventually prevailed 18-4 over Newcastle in Melbourne on Monday evening to move to the top of the NRL ladder. Storm full-back Billy Slater turned in yet another impressive display, pulling off a try-saving tackle on opposite number Kurt Gidley and making a break in the second half.
The Kangaroos custodian will surely be named at full-back for Queensland when the team is announced tomorrow, with Brisbane's Karmichael Hunt likely to be picked either at five-eighth or on the bench.
Much of the focus was on Origin with touted Blues half-back Kurt Gidley putting hearts in the mouths of selectors when he sustained an early head knock.
It was feared Gidley had sustained a fractured cheekbone but he partook in the rest of the match and the extent of any potential injury is not yet clear.
The Kangaroos utility's impact from full-back was not as significant as in previous matches this season, with Jarrod Mullen turning in a solid performance in the number seven jumper.
Storm prop Brett White will likely also earn a Blues jumper but it was feared he too would miss out when he was forced into the dressing rooms early with a suspected broken collarbone.
However the injury was not as serious as first thought and White returned to action.
Newcastle's former Storm prop Ben Cross is considered to be a big chance of making his Origin debut but he was heavily marked and struggled to make an impact.
He received a heavy knock in the last play of the match and had trouble getting back to his feet.
Storm and Blues coach Craig Bellamy hinted that Gidley and White would be among the names read out for the Blues tomorrow but refused to offer any confirmation.
"You guys got me last year so I'm not going to get caught this year. I copped a bit of a hammering for that," he responded to questioning at the post-match press conference.
Bellamy said White had done all that had been asked of him against the Knights.
"That's what we expect of Brett, he's just reliable. You know exactly what you're going to get from him and he produces," he said.
The Knights came into the encounter having lost their previous three matches at 'the graveyard' by a combined 144-16, but more then held their own against the reigning premiers in an exciting opening 40 minutes.
It took Melbourne almost 52 minutes to breach the Knights defence and it did so in trademark fashion, with Test back Israel Folau dragging down a Cooper Cronk crossfield kick to score in the corner.
Folau then bagged the fifth double of his fledgling career when took a fine pass from Michael Crocker, finishing off a sweeping backline move.
Mullen gave the visitors some hope when he swooped on a Cameron Smith grubber and raced 70 metres down the right touchline to score in the corner, showing surprising pace to beat Matt Geyer in cover.
But Blues Origin aspirant Anthony Quinn ensured the two points would go Melbourne's way with a four-pointer minutes later.

Big Jack's legacy lives on By Paul Malone - "NO one calls themselves a critic." This might not be in the top 100 most-quoted quotes from Jack Gibson, but it's one I've never forgotten. Gibson, who died last Friday aged 79, is rightfully associated with club football and the changes he brought to the way rugby league teams are coached.
But Gibson was also an important figure in State of Origin football.
The "supercoach" was 60 when he agreed to coach New South Wales, the highest level of representative football he reached as a mentor.
The 1989 series was dominated by one of the greatest Queensland teams ever - one that set the standard for the Maroons team to be named this afternoon.
But in his two years in charge, Gibson blooded in Origin football Laurie Daley, Brad Fittler, Ricky Stuart, Glenn Lazarus, Chris Johns and Rod Wishart.
Daley played 23 times for NSW, Fittler 31, Lazarus 19, Stuart 14, Johns nine and Wishart 22.
They became key men in the Daley-captained Blues teams under Phil Gould that won the Origin series in 1992, 1993 and 1994.
Back in 1989, Gibson was painted by the NSW media as a coaching "messiah" to end two years of Queensland success. They were a year premature.
Big Jack's first game in charge saw the Blues hammered 36-6. The next morning the match report I wrote had a triumphant headline penned by a colleague: "Maroons Send Off Jack Who".
"Jack Who" . . . gee, he had already won five premierships and with his use of newly defined statistical and video information had helped to revolutionise league coaching.
By the time I next needed to talk to him, Jack Who would have long forgotten about that headline - on the off-chance he much cared about it in the first place.
At the time I raised with him the latest criticism, whatever it was, of the selected NSW team.
"Who are the critics?" Gibson demanded.
"Well, Roy Masters, for one," I replied.
He looked at me like someone who had fallen off the turnip truck.
"No one calls themselves a critic," big Jack said.
I didn't have an answer for that.
What I think he was saying was that most pundits had opinions they felt they had reached by themselves and didn't see themselves as some faceless group of baggers-for-hire.
The followers among the media ranks would - and still do almost two decades later - find someone else's opinion to draw a reaction without being game to advance one of their own.
Gibson had no use for critics in setting up a new, winning NSW team culture, which included hosting a dinner at his house in 1990 for all Blues players.
"He said we would all be most welcome to come to his home after the series, and you could tell he wasn't talking bullshit," Ben Elias, the NSW captain in all three games in 1990, said yesterday.
"When the big fella was in the dressingroom, you couldn't look sideways or make a practical joke.
"It was eerie. Not many people had that aura of respect. I never heard him raise his voice.
"I remember he also gave Brad Fittler the nickname 'Freddy'. They were introduced and Jack said: 'Pleased to meet you, Fred'. How's that for a legacy?
"He gave a chance to those blokes for NSW you mentioned. He went with winners and I was touched to be some part in his career.
"He didn't have too many game plays and he told us (in 1990) when he got to the Origin team that he wouldn't teach us anything new. But we learned how to win together."
Elias recalls vividly how Gibson reacted when NSW won the 1990 series-clinching game in Melbourne, when there was uproar from Queensland about a stripping penalty against Allan Langer.
"The Blues players were celebrating liked we'd won Lotto and he wasn't fazed at all - just his normal cool, calm self," he said.
After the game Gibson fumed about his players being "dumb" in defying his pre-match warning to use longer boot studs to counteract the slippery Melbourne turf.
Only one player, Elias, had changed boots at halftime. Gibson's standards were not swayed by a game's result.
He didn't coach NSW in 1991, having threatened to stand down for the dead third game of the 1990 series if selectors picked Steve Roach over Lazarus. Roach had transgressed Gibson's disciplinary rules by fighting with Wally Lewis in the Melbourne game.
A couple of days later the selectors backed down and left out Roach. Young Lazarus stayed and stayed.
Gibson, who popularised the view in league that coaches should get out of clubs before the players stop listening, had been and gone from Origin football in two years.
Jack Who's legacy lived on and on. Read more Courier Mail

Creating Space with Don Oxenham - ARL Level 4 Coach
There are many play situations using various types of passes and running of lines that can be used to create space.
Coaches are only limited by their own imagination in the use of these in a game.
The success of any of these plays will depend on the coach's ability to coach them to the players and the amount of time and quality performance applied in a coaching session.
The principle role of a football carrier in attack is to progress the football up field until reaching a situation where this is no longer possible.
Their responsibility is then endeavour to create a gap or space for support players to continue the go forward attack.
In creating space the ball carrier must effectively ensure that any prospective defenders are drawn away from the support player who can run into the created space or gap.
This space may only be small e.g. one metre wide or to a greater distance between two defending players.
In creating these situations players must first be proficient in all skill techniques necessary. Primarily the aim is to create a situation of having more attacking players than defenders e.g. two (2) attacking players against one (1) defender.
A players ability to create space will depend on:
Individual skill level Vision Understanding of the situation Judgement Timing (running and passing)
There are three basic abilities to look at:
1. Draw and Pass 2. Run Angles 3. Unders and Overs
Probably the most basic skill which can be used to create space, but it is the end product of a number of well co-ordinated movement patterns as well as judgement and timing.
A well executed skill designed to create space for support players to run in to and mostly used in orthodox attacking play and one on one defence.
Effectiveness of this skill depends on players ability to -
Skillfully execute all movements of the running and passing techniques
To judge how and when to commit a defender
Time a pass, and of support players position
Assess actions of all positions directly involved
Use vision
Communicate
Changing the point of attack by changing the angle through the ball carrier and support player creates space effectively.
The success of this play requires -
Refined ball handling and passing skill Judgement Timing - running and passing Running lines of both players Decision making of when to change angle Communication Vision ............more
