* EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK 23 - Combining Skills and Conditioning
With Alan Wilson - Hayden Knowles - Written by David Haynes
.................giving players long recovery breaks is important in today's training regiments, particularly when the players' bodies are taking a pounding week in and week out.
As Knowles stresses, ample recovery time also means the players will be mentally focused when other sessions come around.
"Trying to do a speed session when they're fatigued is a waste of time, years ago they had to fit everything into two nightly sessions a week which meant by the time the speed session came around the players' bodies were fatigued. We get more time with the players now, and subsequently our results are better than what they used to get." he said.
Something that hasn't changed too dramatically over the years is the emphasis trainers put on skill drills. The Eels are one of a growing number of clubs who try and incorporate as much skill work as possible.
"We want to put as much time into skill as we do any other facet of our game whether it be strength, speed and aerobic conditioning," admits Wilson.
"Skill is going to be part of everything we do, and we never want to change from that. Everyday we do strength, speed or conditioning we will do skill with it.
We're probably limited to three of four weight sessions a week, but there is nothing really limiting us doing five or six skills sessions a week, because skill is going to be part of everything we do, and we never want to change from that..........all 36 RLCM eBooks are on one CD-ROM - Receive it when you join the RLCM Monthly Club.

Super League Review Bradford survived a tense finish to deny Wigan second place in the engage Super League with a 26-12 success.
The Bulls had seemed set for a convincing victory after blitzing their Grattan Stadium visitors with early tries from Semi Tadulala, Shontayne Hape and Ben Jeffries.
Wigan responded through Pat Richards and Phil Bailey in the second half but the Bulls just had enough and James Evans settled the win in the last minute.
Hull registered a third straight win for the first time this year as they out-played Huddersfield 28-20 at the KC Stadium with a performance to suggest their early season troubles may be over.
Peter Sharp's side have languished near the foot of the engage Super League for most of the campaign due to a number of injuries and sub-standard performances, but inspired by their scrum-half Adam Dykes they were able to move to within touching distance of the top six.
Australian Dykes - playing his first league match for five weeks after an illness - was the linchpin for the Black and Whites, creating all four of their tries, two of which were scored by Todd Byrne.
Wakefield hit a purple patch in the last quarter of a dramatic match on Saturday to recover a 14-point deficit and beat Harlequins 24-20.
Harlequins looked to have completed a Super League double at a sun-kissed Belle Vue after running in four tries in an 11-minute spell to establish a 20-6 half-time lead.
But the Wildcats, who were still without nine senior players, scored three tries in 13 minutes, including one from former London Broncos centre Tony Martin, to snatch a fourth consecutive win.
Sam Obst and Jamie Rooney - his second of the game - got the others.
Quins' tries came from Rikki Sheriffe, Michael Worrincy, Danny Orr and Matthew Gafa, while they also had two disallowed which would have put them out of sight.
In the night's other game, the Catalans Dragons climbed to second in the table with a 38-30 victory over lowly Castleford, extending their unbeaten run to eight games in the process.
Castleford belied their position in the table with a gutsy display, twice taking the lead in the first half and then fighting back from 32-18 down to set up a tense finish.
When winger Adam Fletcher scored the Tigers' fifth try four minutes from the end and Kirk Dixon kicked a fifth goal, the Catalans lead was down to just two points and they needed a last-minute score from French Test loose forward Gregory Mounis to clinch victory.
Full-back Clint Greenshields and hooker Aaron Gorrell both touched down on their return to the Dragons side while ex-Wakefield and Salford prop Michael Korkidas scored his first try for Castleford.
The win cuts Leeds' lead at the top to five points.
On Friday, the injury-hit Rhinos survived a second-half fightback from Hull KR to gain a very credible 36-22 win at Craven Park.
Brian McClennan's league leaders overcame a poor first-half showing to lead 24-10 at the hour mark, but saw play-off chasing Rovers come back to within two points of them before veteran Keith Senior put the game to bed with 13 minutes to go.
It was of huge credit to Leeds that they dismissed the absence of five international players to gain a 10th win of the season against a Robins side who remain on the fringes of the top six.
A hat-trick from Paul Clough eclipsed another from Warrington's Kevin Penny as St Helens edged out their rivals 30-22 in a classic.
The Wolves looked like finally breaking their Saints hoodoo as Penny completed a magical treble and Jon Clarke followed him over in early in the second half at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Yet, as they had done twice previously on a dramatic night, Saints came from behind to snatch a memorable victory with two late tries. Read more Sporting Life
Stuart calls on enforcers - CONCERNS about Wayne Bennett's involvement with the New Zealand team last night helped earn firebrand forwards Carl Webb and Paul Gallen their first Australian jerseys for the May 9 Centenary Test at the SCG. Folkes to escape spray fine - THE NRL is less than thrilled with the decision by Steve Folkes to rubbish referee Tony Archer's form, but the Bulldogs coach is set to avoid a $10,000 fine for comments he made in the wake of his team's loss to Manly on Saturday night. Young gun Pearce in NSW Origin duel - MITCHELL PEARCE is still a teenager, and last night, after being named as City halfback for Friday night's Origin game against Country in Wollongong, he displayed all his boyish charm by declaring he was "over the moon" and that he couldn't wait to "mix with all of these great players and find out what the go is in camp". Storm clouds brewing for Melbourne's title rivals - THIS competition is over. After seven rounds, it is clear there is not a team good enough to beat Melbourne. Patched-up Benji may sidestep Kiwis call - WESTS TIGERS five-eighth Benji Marshall has said he will rule himself out of New Zealand Test representation if he doesn't feel his form meets international standard. Noddy shakes head over trade talks - CRONULLA halfback Brett Kimmorley said he was shocked to find out that he may be traded, perhaps mid-season, in a deal brokered by his manager, George Mimis. Storm rejects 'boring' label - Melbourne Storm believes Peter Sterling is a great of the game who has earned his right to voice his opinion. Kangaroo call up for in-form Slater - Billy Slater's hot form ensures his first Australian jersey. Ugly is the means to mediocre end for the Sharks - WHENEVER teams beat the Sharks they invariably describe their win as "ugly". The Newtown Jets Get Back on the Winning Flight-Path. - The Newtown Jets regained their winning form with an emphatic 32-0 win over Canterbury-Bankstown in the NSWRL VB NSW Cup match played at Henson Park on Saturday.
The match was played in perfect conditions and Henson Park has never looked better, with the sunny weather drawing out this season's best crowd. The Jets led 22-0 at half-time and managed to keep the Bulldogs scoreless for the second half as well.
Newtown's dominance on the scoreboard was not exactly reflected in the match statistics. Canterbury had a much better completion rate than the Jets in both halves, as well as having the possession and territorial advantages arising from a lopsided penalty count in favour of the Bulldogs.
Newtown's tackling enthusiasm and speed off the line snuffed out Canterbury's attacking ventures, aided also by the Bulldogs' own shoddy handling and lack of purpose.
Jets centre Albert Hopoate crossed twice in the first half and both Newtown wingers Byron Ford and Rhys Pritchard scored tries, with Pritchard's coming off a superb off-load from the classy back-rower Sean Rudder.
Jets coach Greg Matterson called on his players to maintain their commitment in defence for the second half and to play through their sets - they complied with his first request but completed less than 50% of their sets in the second session, and yet kept a strong grip on the game's ultimate outcome.
Newtown added a further two tries through workhorse forward Mickey Paea and fullback Toshio Laiseni, with Paea's try coming from a remarkable exhibition of strength and determination.
Coach Matterson was particularly pleased with his team's defensive effort, particularly in view of Canterbury's wealth of possession in both halves.
NSW Rugby League General Manager Geoff Carr was a guest of the Newtown club for the match and he was no doubt impressed with the excellent presentation of Henson Park, the season's best crowd and Newtown's winning form.
The Newtown forward pack deserves special commendation with the best performances coming from Mickey Paea and Sean Rudder. There were a number of standout players in the Newtown backline, with fullback Toshio Laiseni having his best game of the season and wingers Ford and Pritchard were always dangerous with the ball. Centres Hopoate and Brent Grose and halfback Luke Millwood were other strong performers.
With the Anzac Day long weekend being part of a split round, the Newtown Jets have no playing commitments next weekend. Their next home game at Henson Park is on Saturday, 24th May against the Central Newcastle Knights. Newtown Jets Online

State of Origin backline is the best ever: Mal Meninga - Greg Davis - Maroons coach Mal Meninga says Queensland's 2008 State of Origin backline could be the best ever and we have talent to burn ahead of the series opener on May 21.
Queensland will unleash a potent backline on the Blues in the series opener on May 21 at Sydney's ANZ Stadium that stacks up against any the Maroons have fielded since 1980.
Captain Darren Lockyer and Johnathan Thurston will play in the halves, Brent Tate, Justin Hodges, Greg Inglis and Israel Folau form a three-quarter line and there are a wealth of fullbacks to choose from.
Billy Slater, Karmichael Hunt and Matt Bowen lead the contenders for the No.1 jersey to underline the embarrassment of riches available to the selectors.
NSW is struggling to find a halves pairing to counter Lockyer and Thurston and will battle to match it with the pace and power of the in-form Maroons.
The great Queensland sides of the middle and late 1980s had all-star backlines led by Maroons legends such as Wally Lewis, Gene Miles, Allan Langer and Meninga.
Their dominance helped to create a golden age for Queensland, which hopes to build a similar dynasty with the new generation of stars.
Meninga, a two-time series winning coach and veteran of 32 games for Queensland, said the current batch of backline stars could surpass the exploits of their famous predecessors.
Meninga said it was an exciting prospect to have such a talented backs division at his disposal.
"Potentially, it could be the best or one of the best backlines Queensland has ever produced," he said.
"We've still got five weeks to go but if everybody is available, it's a coach's dream really."
Meninga's former Maroons teammate and ex-Queensland coach Mark Murray said the quality of the backline would be indicated by the calibre of players left out.
"The backline is certainly in good shape when you are talking about a team that doesn't have room for a guy like Scott Prince, who is in tremendous form at the moment," Murray said.
"You've also got Cooper Cronk, the incumbent Test halfback, who won't get a look in, along with guys like Matty Bowen and Willie Tonga as well.
"If those guys can't make the side, then how good a shape is the team in?"
Murray, who played 15 Origin matches between 1981 and 1986 and coached the side in 1999-2000, said strong club combinations were also a bonus for Queensland, with the Storm and Broncos likely to make up a majority of the Maroons backline.
"Those combinations that build up over time at club level serve you very well in the heat of battle at representative level," he said. "A lot of those guys have played together for Queensland and Australia so they'd know each other's games very well." Read more Courier Mail

Noddy regrets loss of honesty - Cronulla halfback Brett Kimmorley yesterday had a mixed finish to a difficult week. The Sharks playmaker who, on Wednesday, was linked with a possible mid-season swap involving St George Illawarra prop Jason Ryles, bemoaned the loss of honesty in the NRL after his side's 20-16 defeat to Wests Tigers at Toyota Stadium.
Kimmorley's problem with the game's integrity had nothing to do with his side's second loss of the season. It was all about moves to ship him on even though he is in the first year of a two-season deal with the club.
He said he had no knowledge of the rumoured trade, which also involves Cronulla prop Ben Ross, and it only came to his attention after it was reported in The Australian on Wednesday.
"I'm finding out in this game you have to be open to change," Kimmorley said.
"It's not as clear-cut as it seems. Generally you don't know what's going to happen until it all breaks out. Honesty is probably not the best thing in our game."
Kimmorley put the midweek furore behind him yesterday to produce a solid performance in a beaten side. He created the opening try for fullback Brett Kearney with a smart piece of play but, like many of his team-mates, produced the occasional error.
Asked how he had been affected by renewed speculation about his future, Kimmorley referred to last year when his future at the club was in limbo.
Kimmorley eventually accepted a reduced deal to stay, but his tenure has seemingly been under the microscope since.
"You generally get a bit scared when rumours start again," he said.
"I feel like I'm pretty settled here. Again, I went through all those issues last year. The difference between this year and last year is that I have a contract.
"I was probably more nervous last year worrying about where I was going and what I was doing. It's a bit disappointing.
"It's interesting to read they could be quite interested to sell me."
Kimmorley conceded he could be interested in joining Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett at the Dragons next season.
He almost moved to Brisbane last year but decided to stay at the Sharks so he and his family could remain in the area. A move to the Dragons would allow that.
"The hardest part about him (Bennett) last year was that he was in Brisbane," Kimmorley said.
"I wasn't prepared to really pack up and do that last year. Now he's down here. Football is a funny thing. Things can move pretty quickly and you don't see it coming."
The other option would be to play out his career in England. His situation is being monitored by several Super League clubs, notably Hull and Widnes, one of the clubs expected to win promotion when the Rugby Football League finalises its two expansion sides for next year.
Kimmorley, who hopes to pursue a media career when his playing days end, said he planned to speak to manager George Mimis this week, hoping for answers.
"If something's going to happen, I'd like to know first. That's the first thing I suppose, you don't don't want to be told last for things like that," he said.
"We've got the bye next week so it's probably good to sit down with George, have a coffee, and know if there is something I should be worried about or if there is nothing.
"The first three contracts I had I never signed. They were pretty much handshake deals.
"It's changed a bit I suppose. Whether that's because it's become a business now or that's where our game has got to, where there are player trades and contracts aren't really contracts any more, I don't know." The Australian
CO-OPERATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE NATIONAL - WEEK 4
MATCH REPORTS (Saturday) - BRAMLEY BUFFALOES 32 LIVERPOOL BUCCANEERS 12 - Stanningley - Liverpool again showed that they are going to be a match for anyone in their first season at this level with a highly creditable performance in defeat. There was little to choose between the sides for much of an absorbing clash where defences tended to dominate, Bramley's ability to make the most of the few clear cut chances on offer the ultimate difference.
Buffaloes welcomed back Paul Drake and his influence off the bench also proved to be a decisive factor while centre Andy McCann took his two tries well and Shawn Gilmour was always involved.
Bramley made an impressive start, going ten points up in as many minutes, Gilmour weaving past three defenders on an arcing run from 40 metres to open the scoring.
Liverpool's initial thrust was quelled and John Richardson's relieving run put the Buffaloes back in a threatening position, from which quick hands across the line allowed McGann to race over out wide from 20 metres.
Richardson and Jon Chamberlain then spent ten minutes in the sin bin after an altercation at the play the ball as some fluency went out of the contest.
Buccaneers got back into it in the 20th minute, making the most of lost possession by the hosts in their own quarter, Darren Forshaw scampering over from close in.
Bramley responded on their next concerted attack, Danny Johnson weaving his way over and Shaun Flynn adding his second conversion but Liverpool showed their best expansive skills to reply on the half hour.
James Lacey's promptings set the ball rolling and a speculative kick on the last tackle saw the trailling Ben Toleman gather by the posts to touch down, Jamie Hammond again adding the extras.
Buffaloes' ability to immediately turn round a set back was again evident when hooker Graham Harrison saw a gap from dummy half and exploited it to maximum advantage.
Liverpool ended the half on the front foot after another fine drive from prop Alex Williams but, crucially, could not turn their possession into points and Richardson and Gilmour's swift interplay just failed to bring a try at the other end.
Drake's shimmy and dart created the first chance of the second period and good work from tireless captain Jon Nicholls and the ever willing Richardson resulted in McGann scooting clear to go over in the corner for his second unconverted try.
For the next 20 minutes, defences dominated and spilt possession undermined the side's attacking forays, Bramley's victory being assured in the best play of the day.
Drake put a lovely short kick behind the Buccaneers defence and the ball was collected by Nicholls who exchanged passes with Richardson before scampering in by the posts.
GAME STAR - Shawn Gilmour always looked dangerous with ball in hand and was aggressive in defence.
GAME BREAKER - Andy McGann's second touchdown in the 51st minute put a decisive three scores between the sides.
FEATHERSTONE LIONS 22 WARRINGTON WIZARDS 50 - Millpond - Wizards ran riot in the second half, their 11 try victory to maintain their unbeaten run emphasising that they will be one of the teams to watch in 2008.
Bolstered by the signing of East Lancashire Lions' 2007 RLCN 'dream teamer', loose forward Alan Reddecliffe - who crossed twice on his debut - Warrington were in devastating form after the break.
Lions, who were without a number of first teamers but welcomed back Adam Thaler, lost their way following the interval, their cause not helped by the dismissal of second rower Craig Barker.
The opening forty was action packed and highly entertaining, John Smith opening the scoring for the hosts in the tenth minute.
Wizards hit back with three unconverted efforts in ten minutes as a reward for their enterprising play, impressive centre Danny Shaw crossing for the first, Reddecliffe making his presence felt and Ian Stephenson sprinting clear out wide.
Barker's score on the half hour to go with Richard Frankland's second goal levelled matters but Stuart Pirrie exploited space on the left and Warren Ayres landed the visitors' first goal to edge them in front.
Right on the stroke of half time, Lions centre Steve Crowe forced his way over to narrow the gap to two points but that was the closest they came as the Wizards then turned on the style.
Joint player/coach Chris Mellor found the line within four minutes of the re-start and when Stephenson claimed his second, the writing was on the wall.
After Barker's dismissal, four touchdowns in seven minutes blitzed Featherstone as the Warrington back rowers, in particular, ran rampant.
Matt Taylor and inspirational Jono Smith, along with impish Billy Sheen and Shaw were simply unstoppable, Reddecliffe claiming his brace soon after to bring up the half century.
To their credit, Featherstone battled on and posted the final points with a try from Byron Cooper.
GAME STAR - Wizards had a number of stand out performers but second rower Jono Smith was perpetual motion.
GAME BREAKER - Ian Stephenson's second try in the 53rd minute signalled a Warrington avalanche.
GATESHEAD STORM 38 DEWSBURY CELTIC 36 - Bullocksteads - A 40 metre penalty from Storm player/coach Jon Coutts, with the last kick of the game, after Celtic were adjudged to have stolen the ball in a tackle, were all the separated the sides at the end of a breathless encounter.
Dewsbury, aided by a hat trick from Marvin Golden, had looked like snaring the spoils but four tries in six minutes in a frantic finale - three of them to Gateshead - saw them snatch the points.
Storm opened the scoring in the third minute through a fine solo score from centre Graham Stephenson by the posts, Coutts adding the extras.
Dewsbury responded when Golden picked up from the play the ball and powered over from close range; James Eatherley unable to add the extras with a difficult conversion from the touchline.
Storm furthered their lead when Richie Metcalfe broke through the visiting line and managed to get the ball free to the supporting Scott Woods who flat footed the covering Eatherley to cross between the posts.
Again Celtic responded almost immediately, a long pass wide to winger Jack Bradbury down the left seeing Danny Thomas take an inside ball to cross almost untouched, which Eatherley converted.
Metcalfe then got his name on the score sheet when he went on another barnstorming run, leaving defenders in his wake from 20 metres out.
Dewsbury were reduced to 11 men when Terry Maun was sent to the sin bin for ungentlemanly conduct and team mate Matt Clark followed minutes later after persistent infringements.
Storm failed to capitalise and Celtic took the lead, Ian Wilson crossing from close range and winger Bradbury getting on the end of a wide move to score in the corner.
Storm hit back when Duncan Bain crossed in the corner after Woods showed great vision to spot an overlap and fired out a long pass but Dewsbury then had the final say of the first half when Golden crossed for his second following a well worked move from a scrum to go over in the corner.
The second half started the same way the first had ended when Golden crossed for his treble, Dom Byrne breaking through the Storm defence before drawing full back Liam Andrews and offloading to the supporting centre.
Astonishingly, there were no further scoring incidents for half an hour but the climax was simply sensational.
Storm skipper Chris Burnett began his side's revival after Dave Vernon, who had caused the Celtic defence to work over time throughout with his elusive running, again punished poor marker work.
Burnett then turned provider when he attacked down the right and combined well with Stephenson, exchanging passes for the strong centre to cross for his second try and put Storm back in the lead by two points; Coutts hitting the upright with his conversion from the touchline.
Terry Maun looked to have snatched victory for Celtic with only three minutes remaining, spotting a gap to go over from close range with James Eatherley's boot making the score 32-36.
Burnett crossed again from the next set to tie the scores which Coutts was unable to convert but his penalty soon after did settle matters.
GAME STAR - A superb performance from Celtic centre Marvin Golden who showed his prowess with a fine hat trick.
GAME BREAKER - Has to be Jon Coutts' last gasp, long range, decisive penalty.
EAST LANCASHIRE LIONS 16 HUDDERSFIELD UNDERBANK RANGERS 30 - Darwen FC - An interception try, five minutes from time, proved to be decisive as Rangers picked up their first win of the season.
Lions fought back to be within four points with five minutes to go and were pressing inside the Huddersfield quarter when scrum half Matt Garside stepped in and raced 80 metres down the other end to seal an away win.
Huddersfield, fielding a side which contained six under 18's, began brightly, excellent and influential hooker John Birt wrestling his way over in the second minute.
Mark Pemberton's penalty got Easts on the board but two tries in six minutes put the visitors seemingly in charge.
Centres Chris Beal and Tom Senior did the damage, Birt converting the first to make it 14-2 but just before the break Adam Toole's run and Pemberton's extras narrowed the gap.
Ben Williams gave the hosts further hope in the 55th minute but on the hour Birt again showed his prowess and experience out of dummy half to go over and convert.
Tony Doyle put Easts' back in contention with 12 minutes to go until Garside struck, Senior claiming his second touchdown in the final minute to inflate the victory margin.
GAME STAR - Hooker John Birt was outstanding keeping a young Rangers side together while also landing a try double and 14 points.
GAME BREAKER - Matt Garside's 80 metre interception five minutes from time, with the match in the balance, steered it Rangers' way.
HEMEL STAGS 6 CELTIC CRUSADERS COLTS 74 - Pennine Way - Celtic maintained their sensational start to the campaign with an overwhelming victory at Hemel.
Led by outstanding hooker Tom Burnell, who posted two tries and 11 goals for a 30 point haul, the Welshmen had too much firepower for an inexperienced Stags outfit, whose frustration clearly got the better of them in the second half.
Having been comprehensively outplayed as the visitors romped to a 34-0 interval lead, Hemel had Barry John Swindells sin binned twice and then sent off along with Peter Clarke and Blake Kirby who were also dismissed in what turned out to be a fiery encounter.
Celtic showed their expansive intentions from the off, wing Greg Callow - who was also later sin binned in a 58th minute mêlée - scoring twice inside four minutes early on.
Mark Wool followed that and Elliott Kear on the right flank scored the first of his hat trick in the 24th minute.
In the run up to half time, Burnell claimed his first touchdown and just after the break, Swindells had his first rest for a swinging arm.
Burnell, and then from the next set, Lee Williams extended the Crusaders' lead and just before the hour, Callow and Swindells saw yellow and Clarke red for running in.
Kear immediately made the extra numbers tell on the overlap and Barrie Phillips crossed before Lee Williams and Chris Vitalini did likewise, again back to back.
Caine Wynyard scored Hemel's sole touchdown in the 70th minute but within a minute of each other Swindells and Kirby were both marched for high tackles.
Kear again and Gary Williams with consecutive touchdowns completed the 13 try rout which left Celtic coach Dan Clements highly satisfied.
"Skipper for the first time Geriant Davies led from the front for us throughout" he said. "It's great to see so many young blokes enjoying their rugby league."
GAME STAR - Tom Burnell will soon be knocking on the Crusaders first team door, another terrific display which yielded 30 points for the rake.

National League Division One Review - Halifax staged a dramatic second-half comeback to stun 12-man Leigh with a 42-36 victory in National League Division One. The home side led 24-6 at the break but Halifax scored five unanswered tries in the final 23 minutes to go from 36-10 down to lead 40-36.
Leigh were on top with scores from Dave McConnell, Chris Giles and Dave Alstead (two). Five goals from Ian Watson and one from Lee Marsh helped the hosts to a 26-point lead.
But Halifax's revival saw Lee Patterson, James Haley, Graham Holroyd, Damien Gibson and Paul Smith go over with Sean Penkywicz adding to his first-half try.
Holroyd also kicked eight goals from as many attempts.
Sheffield Eagles consolidated third place with a 24-16 victory over Batley Bulldogs. Craig Cook gave the Eagles the lead with a try which Johnny Woodcock converted. James Ford crossed before Batley replied with a try from centre Danny Maun. Winger Ollie Marns scored two late tries as the Bulldogs fought back but it was not enough.
Tom Buckenham and Paul Pickering were the Eagles' other try scorers while Woodcock ended with four goals from five attempts.
Featherstone recovered from 16-2 to beat fellow strugglers Dewsbury 40-26.
Bottom side Dewsbury looked set for their first league victory when they built a commanding first-half lead with tries from Andrew Bostock (two), and Alex Bretherton, and two goals from Patrick Walker.
Rovers cut the gap to two points with two tries in three minutes from Sean Hesketh and Waine Pryce shortly before half time.
Featherstone stepped up a gear in the second half with further touch downs from Andy Kirk (two), Wayne McHugh and Pryce.
Tries from Dominic Maloney and Austin Buchanan were in vain for the Rams.
Celtic Crusaders took the points with a 16-14 victory over Widnes Vikings in a dour game. The Crusaders started well and took the lead through Mark Dalle Cort whose momentum saw him slide over the line. Widnes responded positively but failed to break the Welshmen's' defence and it was they who got the next points as Gareth Dean barged his way through, Mark Lennon adding the conversion.
Scott Yates went in at the corner for Vikings who then suffered a killer blow when a kick from Jace van Dijk was plucked out of the air by Anthony Blackwood, giving Lennon an easy conversion and the Crusaders a 16-4 interval lead.
Bob Beswick went over for Widnes and Lee Paterson narrowed the gap to two points but Gavin Dodd's conversion hit the post and bounced out as the visitors held on. Read more Sporting Life

National League Two Review - In National League Two, two tries from Corey Lawrie helped leaders Doncaster to a hard-fought 21-14 victory over second-placed Keighley Cougars. Keighley scored first through Simon Bissell before tries from Lawrie and Luke Gale turned the tables. Keighley levelled at 12-12 through Richard Knight but the Dons sealed a deserved win when Lawrie forced his way over again.
Barrow Raiders made it four wins from four with a 27-22 victory over Gateshead Thunder. Both sides ran in four tries, impressive full-back Stuart Kain scoring in each half for Gateshead while Barrow centre Liam Harrison touched down twice.
Oldham preserved their unbeaten Boundary Park record this season with a 24-14 victory over Rochdale Hornets. Tommy Goulden, Rob Roberts and Danny Halliwell scored for Oldham with Mick Nanyn adding four penalties and two conversions. Alex Brown and Chris Campbell went over for the Hornets with Carl Sneyd scoring two penalty goals and a conversion. Read more Sporting Life

HALIFAX HOME INSUREANCE NATIONAL YOUTH LEAGUE - GRAND FINAL
LEIGH MINERS RANGERS 19 WEST HULL 18 - Stobart Stadium, Widnes
In a classic decider, that was a fantastic advert for the competition, it took an opportunistic drop goal from 40 metres out, in the final minute, by Tom Bradbury to take the trophy to Leigh.
Making light of the difficult wet conditions, Bradbury's one pointer settled a terrific end to end contest that was always too close to call.
If his heroics were the focus of the huge celebrations in the immediate aftermath, it was another example of quick thinking that started the Rangers revival.
Coming up to the half hour, West Hull led 14-6 and although Adam Owen reduced that deficit with a try before the break, it was the one after it that reversed the momentum.
A stray West Hull pass was intercepted by influential Leigh pivot Adam Thomason in the 47th minute and he raced 70 metres to outstrip the desperate cover.
After a couple of early sorties by Rangers had given them an early lead, courtesy of a Danny Jones try converted by Bradbury, West's dominated
Prop Joshua Cooper powered over for their first touchdown and a brace from exciting winger Tom Moor in the space of six minutes, the last of which he converted, edged the Yorkshiremen two scores ahead.
Nevertheless, for all their territorial advantage West Hull could not conjure sufficient scoring opportunities from the overwhelming possession they enjoyed and that deserved greater reward.
Owen made them pay initially and in the second period Rangers, with greater territory and showing more enterprise, gradually gained the ascendancy.
Although galvanised by Thomason's terrific score, Miners could not find the knock out blow and on 65 minutes in a rare West Hull attack, centre Stuart Brentano - showing great pace and composure from 30 metres out - weaved his way past several defenders to give his side a narrow two point lead.
Three minutes later and with a similar amount of time remaining, a West Hull high tackle inside their own 20 allowed Bradbury to level matters with a measured penalty goal.
With the game moving inexorably towards extra time, Bradbury's vision and immense execution from centre field sealed matters for his exultant side.
For Wests, there was some - if scant - consolation that they had scored four tries to three.
Rangers follow in the ranks of previous winners Widnes St Maries and Siddal in a competition that is set to move up a level next season when it comes under the Gillette Champions programme.
The teams in 2009 will have to go some way to match the thrills and endeavour of this decider, though.
GAME STAR - Rangers' excellent stand off Adam Thomason was in the thick of the action throughout and his interception try proved to be crucial.

BIRMINGHAM BULLDOGS 26 GLOUCESTERSHIRE WARRIOS 32 - Birmingham City University Sports Centre - The Warriors opened the new campaign with a hard-fought win over the Bulldogs, three tries in the third quarter taking them from a 16-12 interval deficit to a lead that ultimately proved decisive.
A hat trick from South African stand off Stephan Fourie on debut was the highlight for the visitors, as their multi-national line-up featuring two Samoans, a Kiwi and a Fijian came away from a bruising encounter with the points.
Warriors coach Tom James was pleased with the way the new players settled in: "I was happy with the start, today. We made a lot of mistakes but I was pleased with the team in general and with the lads who made their debuts. They all played really well."
Both sides showed signs of early season rustiness but the Warriors played the better football and, despite being behind for much of the first half, had enough firepower to win.
Gloucestershire got the scoreboard moving after just three minutes, Fourie capitalising on some early pressure by dummying through the defence to the posts for a stylish try converted by Tom Bozzard.
However, indiscipline crept into their play and two penalties from Gareth Harcombe and a hotly-disputed try by Mike Jones had the Bulldogs 10-6 up and full of confidence after twelve minutes.
The game swung from end to end with neither side able to take control of proceedings until visiting Kiwi prop Brad Tindall forced his way over for a try converted by Guy Spencer.
Warriors then handed the initiative straight back to their opponents by making a hash of the re-start and Russell Parker sent Jones through a hole to score converted again by Harcombe to give the Bulldogs a 16-12 lead they kept until the interval.
Five minutes into the second period, Ben Constantine ran a superb line to score between the posts and Bozzard converted to edge Gloucestershire into a lead they were not to relinquish.
Six minutes later, Fourie set Kevin Locke free down the right wing and backed up to score a fine try in the corner.
The Warriors extended their lead to ten points ten minutes later when Steve Barnes forced his way over from close range.
Birmingham refused to surrender and Jones powered over for his third try but the Warriors replied almost immediately with a touchdown straight from a scrum just inside the Bulldogs half, Fourie finding the gap and accelerating away to the posts.
The Bulldogs scored a consolation try on the final whistle as Parker was too strong for the defence, forcing the ball down for a score converted by Jones.
BULLDOGS: Mark Court, Adam Walker, Pete Fullthorpe, Mike Jones (Capt.), Adam Jones, Mark Able, Gareth Harcombe, Mike Tate, Adam Baldock, Sam Woodward, Russ Parker, Glen Willetts, Jon Parker. Replacements: Paul Cadman, Ben Howby, Jack Edwards, Chris Woodcock, Simon Wilkinson, Sam Flatley.
Tries: Jones (9, 32, 67), Parker (80); Goals: Gareth Harcombe 4 from 5, Mike Jones 1 from 1
WARRIORS: Guy Spencer, Rich Carter, Ronnie Haines, Steve Barnes, Kev Locke, Stephan Fourie, Chris Furze, Anton Rhodes, Anton Rhodes, Tom Bozzard, Brad Tindall, Simon Taylor, Steve Davies, Ben Constantine (Capt.). Replacements: Areta Tanoai, Luke Langham, Sam Hough, Danny Price, Jack Petelo, Tom James.
Tries: Fourie (3, 51, 72), Tindall (30), Constantine (45), Barnes (62); Goals: Bozzard 3 from 5, Spencer 1 from 1
ROUND UP
COVENTRY BEARS look in no mood to give up their title in the Midlands Premier as they eased to a comfortable 44-17 win over DERBY CITY at their new home, Haslams.
A burst of three tries in the opening ten minutes from Alex Brown, Chris Brown and Matt Allsopp gave the Bears licence to control the game. Ben Powis and Ty Watson both scored before City registered their first points.
Further tries from Matt Cooper and Richie Whitehouse sent the Bears in at half time 40-6 ahead. In a disappointing second period marred by penalties, City restored some pride with two tries and a drop goal, though the Bears had the final word with Cooper's second try.
Three tries and three goals on debut from NOTTINGHAM OUTLAW's former Derby City centre Ben Thornton and a hat-trick from Paul Calland saw the visitors to a comfortable 56-4 win over LEICESTER PHOENIX at Aylestone St James.
A new-look Phoenix side with seven debutants were soon behind as the Outlaws posted three tries in the opening ten minutes through Rutherford, Paul Calland and Will Thomas all converted by 2007 'RLC Player of the Year' Rob Brown.
Further unconverted tries from Foxon and two from Thornton saw the Outlaws 30-0 ahead at the break. Phoenix were much more resilient in the second period despite further tries from Calland and Thornton and a goal from Thornton and they earned their reward with an unconverted try from John Cutliffe.
Nottingham finished strongly and three tries in the final ten minutes from Calland, Martin Edwards and Thomas with Thornton adding two more goals saw them to an impressive win.
SOUTHERN PREMIER
PORTSMOUTH NAVY SEAHAWKS, led by outstanding prop Jamie Goss, made a highly impressive debut in the Premier ranks with a 54-34 success at LONDON SKOLARS in a match that yielded 16 tries in the heat.
Skolars went ahead through a fourth minute try from 18 year old winger Smokie Junor converted by Leigh Nissen and should have doubled the score when the same player was put clear, only to drop the pass.
A penalty for holding down let Portsmouth back into the game on ten minutes through Goss and they were up 24-6 by the 26th minute. Tries from Sam Foster, Andy Murray, Kev Botwood and Danny Johnson and three goals from Foster giving them a healthy advantage.
Skolars were getting little joy through the big Portsmouth pack and chose to play more around the fringes which paid dividends as Junor crossed again, converted by Nissen to halve the deficit.
Seahawks hit back with a converted try to Chris Thomson to take the score out to 30-12 but, in a breathless opening forty, Norths again responded with a try from dummy half by Mario du Toit and an interception from Steve Forbes right on half-time which saw the teams break at 24-30.
Three minutes into the second half Goss bagged his second before a Paul Towells try for Skolars meant a six point difference again. Botwood bagged a brace for the visitors before Junor - who is one to watch - completed his hat-trick.
The bigger Portsmouth pack got on top, Murray posting his second try and Wes Dugan crossing in the last minute to bring up the 50 points.
Defending Harry Jepson Trophy Champions ST ALBANS CENTURIONS began with a win at ELMBRIDGE, formerly Kingston Warriors. Both sides started at a blistering pace but Saints broke the deadlock with three quick-fire tries, two of them from pacy backs Craig Foster and Pete Chapman.
Elmbridge got one back through youngster Rob Muat from a perfectly weighted chip by Douglas Redmon but the visitors led 22-4 at the break. Both sides came into the second half firing, with St Albans striking with two quick tries.
Elmbridge responded with some commendable character which produced a brace from Redmon and a well taken touchdown for Nathan Lattimer, with debutant Danny Johnston providing the assist. Skipper Mike Coates converted all three to put the game back in the melting pot but Cents finished strongly with a further touchdown to seal the win.
KENT RAVENS, whose tries came from James Taylor and Aiden Oakley, were no match for rampant WEST LONDON SHARKS who posted 16 touchdowns in a massive win.
Ben Forteath grabbed an early brace for Wests before Kent hit back but then it became a home procession; Josh Aomarere leading the home spree with five touchdowns. James Giblin grabbed four and Charlie Clay two while JP Byrnes, Craig Kruger and Tony Williams also crossed in a power packed display. Liam Bartels kicked 12 goals. RFL Online

QRL Wizard Cup Reviews Tense Draw At Kougari
EASTS five-eighth Isaac Kaufmann summed up the general feeling around BMD Kougari Oval when he walked slowly from the field following the draw with Wynnum Manly.
"It's disappointing," Kaufmann said, reflecting on the 22-22 draw.
"We really needed to win this game."
Wynnum Manly players, and their long suffering supporters who again packed into the famous Chook Pen, would no doubt have shared similar sentiments.
In fact, the vocal Wynnum Manly supporters were probably even more frustrated than a "disappointed" Kaufmann and his Easts teammates.
After all, Wynnum Manly had led 16-0 in the first half following tries from Aoterangi Herangi, Matt Seamark and Luke Dalziel Don.
However, the Tigers clawed their back into the physical contest on the back of quick tries from Kaufmann and Liam Campbell.
Wynnum Manly again grabbed the ascendancy on the stroke of half-time when big Fili Sofa charged over for a try underneath the goal posts.
The converted try put the Seagulls in front 22-12 at the break.
But the Seagulls were kept scoreless in a gripping second half. The Tigers, led superbly by powerhouse young prop Fred Tila and backrower Marcus Jensen, needed only 20 minutes to level the score.
But neither side could break the deadlock in a tense final 20 minute period of the second half.
Both sides came within inches of scoring in the final 10 minutes.
"It sort of felt like we were getting close, but not close enough," Kaufmann said.
"We were getting a foot away from the line but we just couldn't get there."
Like the Tigers, an exhausted Wynnum Manly outfit came agonisingly close to sealing a match-winner.
Only some desperate last-ditch defence prevented nippy Seagulls halfback Matt Seamark from crossing near the posts in the final 10 minutes.
Seamark was one of the Seagulls' better performers but the most dangerous player on the park was the Tigers' Fred Tila.
The explosive young prop's power and speed regularly troubled the home team.
"He's only young so he's getting better every week," Kaufmann said of Tila.
"He keeps following Charlie (Tonga), running off Charlie a bit."
Easts managed to maintain their shaky grip on fifth place following today's draw.
But with Redcliffe hot on their heels, the Tigers can ill-afford to slip up against the Ipswich Jets at Langlands Park next Saturday.
"They're the form team, so if we can't rise for that we're in trouble," Kaufmann said.
Wynnum Manly sits one point behind the Tigers in seventh spot. The Seagulls have now recorded two draws in a mixed start to the season.
However, Shane McNally's charges remain just one win behind fourth-placed Burleigh and they could possibly jump two sides on the ladder with a victory over the Central Comets in Rockhampton on Saturday.
Hot Magpies Burn Jets
SOUTHS Logan has survived a later scare to edge out the fast-finishing Ipswich Jets in a bruising round seven Wizard Cup encounter at Briggs Road.
The Magpies led Ipswich 20-4 at half-time, but were nearly run down by a gutsy home side in a thrilling finish.
Souths Logan coach Paul Bramley was a relieved man after the Magpies held on for a 20-18 victory.
Bramley said the warm conditions took its toll on the players, many of whom had only arrived from chilly Canberra on match eve.
"The heat got us again," Bramley said.
"They've done a week in Canberra where it's really cold, then come up here on a Saturday and it cooks their brains."
The win allowed the Magpies to draw level with the Jets on 12 competition points.
"That was a game we probably wouldn't have got in the past," Bramley said.
"To me, they're the best side we've played."
Powerhouse five-eighth Justin Carney and fullback Josh Dugan were standouts for the Magpies.
The young guns are regulars with the Canberra Raiders Under 20 team but were set loose in the Wizard Cup on Saturday.
Carney scored a brilliant individual try just on half-time when he burst through the Jets line to put the visitors in front 20-4.
Dugan also made a number of sizzling runs and regularly defused threatening kicks behind the Souths Logan front-line.
The Magpies made all the running in the opening minutes, with flying winger David Milne crossing for the opening try in the seventh minute.
Milne showed blistering pace down the right flank to score in the corner from a well-placed short kick.
"He's one of the fastest in the club at the Raiders," Bramley revealed.
"He's a former sprinter."
But Milne and his tiring teammates didn't receive too many more opportunities in the second half.
Despite losing prop Aaron Sweeney to the sin-bin late in the second half, Ipswich made all the running and were rewarded with tries to Troy O'Sullivan, Michael Ryan and Scott Ireland.
Ireland's try in the corner came in the 77th minute and brought the Jets to within two points.
But the big winger was unable to convert the try from the sideline.
Ipswich launched one last attacking raid but lost the ball deep inside their own territory.
The match finished on a sour note, with players from both sides trading blows. Souths Logan were awarded the penalty.
Mackay Cuts Down Burleigh
BUOYED by a 32-10 away win over the Burleigh Bears, the resurgent Mackay Cutters are on a mission to repay their loyal supporters.
The Cutters have been disappointing in their only two home matches in their debut season, losing to both the Ipswich Jets and Norths Devils.
But the newcomers from the north have been able to stay in touch with the competition leaders by winning at two of the toughest venues - Dolphin Oval and Pizzey Park.
The latest win came at the Gold Coast's Pizzey Park on Saturday night when the Cutters led from start to finish to put Burleigh away in a clinical display.
Mackay player/coach Shane Muspratt said the performance was easily "our best game of the season".
The Cutters led 14-0 at half-time.
"It was pleasing that we went on with it and didn't let it slip this time," said Muspratt, whose team squandered a 10-6 half-time lead in front of their home fans the previous week.
The former Cowboy put the improved performance down to their ball control and high completion rate.
"We did that pretty well and maintained some pressure and scored some good tries from that," he said.
Muspratt's men are now itching to put on a show for their home fans on Saturday night when the in-form Souths Logan Magpies arrive in the north.
"We've got three in a row (at home) so hopefully we can build some momentum," he said.
"If we can win matches at home, the people of Mackay will be hanging out of trees to watch us play."
Former Newcastle star Daniel Abraham was again a standout for the Cutters.
The big forward crossed for a try and landed six goals in another impressive display.
Cowboys signing Travis Burns also found the try-line in a strong outing.
But it was two lesser known Mackay players who thrilled Muspratt.
Forwards Quinton Fielder and Josh Rovelli were in everything after winning call ups from the local Mackay competition.
Despite the loss, Burleigh (eight points) remains in the top five at the completion of round seven.
Pride Wins Seven Straight
THE'VE lost their two most influential players but the Northern Pride continues to do what it has done from word go - win.
The Pride produced a breathtaking finish to beat the Central Comets 40-10 in Saturday's round seven Wizard Cup match at Barlow Park.
Having lost in-form back rower Joel Reithmuller to a season-ending knee injury, a setback which came hot on the heels of Brett Anderson's departure to the Melbourne Storm, many expected the Pride's bubble to burst.
But the Pride was still able to extend its winning run to seven on Saturday with a 30-point victory against a gallant Comets outfit.
The Comets tested the Pride in a scrappy first half. The Pride managed to take a 10-4 lead into the break but Central drew first blood in the second half to draw level at 10-10.
But just when it looked like an upset could be on the cards, big Pride winger Josh Vaughan produced a 90m try against the run of play to break the Comets' spirits.
The Pride never looked back, running in a further four tries to seal Central's fate.
Drew Campbell and Greg Byrnes both completed doubles for the Cairns-based outfit.
Although happy with the final result, Pride coach Andrew Dunemann was far from impressed with the opening 40 minutes.
Dunemann called Alex Starmer into the starting side following Reithmuller's exit.
"He is (shattered)," Dunemann said of Reithmuller, a Tully product who signed with the Pride from Ipswich.
"I am too, because he was consistently our best player."
Dunemann elected to rest five-eighth Stephen Sheppard, who has been struggling with a sternum problem.
In Sheppard's absence, young Cowboy Jackson Nicolau stepped into the No. 6 jersey.
"He went all right actually," Dunemann said.
"I reckon he went the best he's gone for us so far."
After two strong wins at home, the Pride finds itself on the road next weekend for a round eight clash with Tweed Heads.
Dunemann is amazed the Seagulls have yet to win a game.
But the Pride coach is expecting a torrid encounter, despite Tweed's dismal start to their title defence.
"I think the week off will probably do them a world of good," he said.
"It's going to be a tough game. We've talked about it already and we're under no illusions how hard it is going to be."
Fins Hit Back In Style
REDCLIFFE is back in the winners' circle, thanks largely to an inspired performance from light-footed prop James Crombie who led the Dolphins to an emphatic win against Norths.
In a match which never reached great heights, Redcliffe's pack stood tall and showed the Dolphins still have some fight left in them.
Redcliffe coach Gary O'Brien was delighted with two points but claimed the Dolphins were not yet back on track.
"It was a breakthrough in the sense that we won, but I think next week against Burleigh will tell us how we are going," O'Brien said.
O'Brien said a lack of team cohesion had been behind the team's poor form so far this season.
"Everyone's been working hard, but maybe not being smart on the field," the former Logan coach said.
"We needed that win though."
In a sprightly first half, Norths tackled hard and in numbers, but they never looked like troubling the scorers due to a greenhorn pair of halves who couldn't deliver quality ball to their outside backs.
It also didn't help that they were being constantly pushed back by Crombie.
At times Crombie forgot he was a prop.
He would dance when approaching the defensive line and showed an array of jinks and side steps that would make Benji Marshall blush.
O'Brien couldn't speak highly enough of the afro haired 20-year-old, who was lured from Norths late last year.
"He has a lot of talent," O'Brien said.
"We have worked him hard at training and it's starting to pay off, but he has massive potential."
Kaine Manihera was also a standout for the Dolphins.
The pocket rocket kiwi, whose bullying runs resemble those of New Zealand international Matt Utai, had been plying his trade in the FOGS Cup for the first few rounds due to a lack of discipline.
"He is always committed in games, but it's not always the case at training," O'Brien said.
For Norths, whose average age was 21, their outside backs looked sharp, particularly 19 year-old fullback Willis Grant and 17-year-old winger Ryan Tongia. QRL Online

"This is a significant week for country Rugby League and it will be great for fans to support the events taking place and to come out and support the Country Origin team against City," VB Gold Country Origin coach Laurie Daley said.
The Country Origin team will be announced tonight at Toyota Stadium following the NRL clash between the Sharks and Tigers with the team to assemble in Wollongong on Monday afternoon ahead of a series of public promotions.
Further west, on Tuesday, April 29, Dubbo will host the third of 10 Harvey Norman Regional Celebrations that are being staged across country NSW and Queensland.
Following on from the success of celebrations in Nowra and Toowoomba, more than 25 former greats from western NSW who have represented either their state or Australia will assemble in Dubbo for the day-long celebration.
Joining them will be members of the all-conquering Western Division team that famously won the 1974 AMCO Cup, while country music sensations The McClymonts will also be performing.
More than 10,000 country fans have visited the regional Rugby League history exhibitions with 3000 fans having already converged on the Dubbo exhibition in the lead-up to the regional celebration.
On Wednesday, April 30, the Country Rugby League will honour its heroes with the naming of the NSW Country Team of the Century at a gala event in Wollongong.
On Thursday, May 1, Wagga Wagga will unveil its regional Rugby League history exhibition with local heroes Greg Hawick and David Barnhill to officially open the display that will stay open for two weeks and culminate with their major regional celebration at Gissing Oval on May 14.
Also on Thursday, in Kiama, the City Origin team will unveil a Centenary plaque at the Kiama Leagues Club commemorating the region's contribution to Rugby League.
The Toyota Centenary Trophy knockout competition continues to be played across regional NSW and Queensland as the battle continues to find the best bush footy team in Australia.
The champion teams from NSW and Queensland will face each other in a curtain-raiser to State of Origin 3 at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday, July 2. NSWCRL Online

Tigers snatch win over Sharks By Luke Pentony - A late converted try to Chris Lawrence handed the Wests tigers a 20-16 victory over Cronulla in their round seven match at Shark Park this afternoon.
The Tigers had trailed 14-16 before Lawrence touched down in the 76th minute, his try subsequently converted by captain Brett Hodgson to give the Tigers their fourth win of the season.
Lawrence finished with two tries in the win, the result meaning the Sharks have now lost two straight at home.
After the match Grandstand's Craig Hamilton spoke with another Tigers try scorer in Chris Heighington, who expressed his delight at grabbing an away win. Read and listen more ABC Radio

Titans stay top after downing Warriors - Gold Coast maintained its place atop the NRL ladder with a 36-24 victory over the Warriors in their round seven match at Robina this afternoon. The Titans kept their perfect record at their new home ground intact with a six tries to four performance, having always remained a step ahead of a competitive Warriors outfit that is still yet to post a win on the road this season.
Titans captain Scott Prince enhanced his case for Test selection with another solid showing, which included a perfect record with the boot via six conversions from as many attempts.
Prince told Grandstand's Brad Tallon after the match that despite the fact his side led throughout, they were made to work for the two points. Read and listen more ABC Radio

EUROPEAN FEDERATION MAKE STRATEGIC APPOINTMENT - The Rugby League European Federation has continued to strengthen their organisation with the appointment of Christophe Jouffret as their new Regional Director for France. His duties will also include looking after French-speaking nations who come under the auspices of the RLEF.
A former player with Avignon, for whom he made his first team debut as a teenager, he scored the winning try in the 1989 Lord Derby Cup final to ensure a 13-12 victory for the blue and white's against Le Pontet.
In 1992 he became the first Frenchman to play in the Russian domestic league, guesting for Spartak Moscow, having organised the inaugural French tour to the country a year earlier.
He was appointed secretary of the French RL Federation in 2004 and will travel to this autumn's World Cup as a director of the Tricolours.
Speaking about his new responsibilities, he commented, "I am very happy, proud and honoured to be part of the RLEF and to help promote and contribute to the expansion of the game."
"This opportunity represents a great and motivating challenge; hopefully my background in the game will help me strengthen the sport in areas such as South Cataluña and Morocco."
RLEF Executive and Development Officer Kevin Rudd added, "Christophe has a wealth of experience at all levels of the game; his knowledge of the French systems, we believe, will help support and contribute further to the growth of the sport. I wish him every success in this new role." RLEF Online

Wakefield 24 defeated Harlequins 20 - Wakefield hit a purple patch in the last quarter of a dramatic Super League match on Saturday to recover a 14-point deficit and beat Harlequins 24-20.
Read more Sporting Life

Catalans Dragons 38 defeated Castleford 30 - The Catalans Dragons climbed to second in the table with a 38-30 victory over lowly Castleford, extending their unbeaten run to eight games in the process.
Read more Sporting Life

Stewart inspires Eagles revival - By Philip Henderson Brett Stewart received six stitches for a nasty cut under his eye before helping spearhead Manly's come-from-behind 30-22 victory over the Bulldogs at Brookvale Oval.
The Sea Eagles scored 30 straight points to come from 10-0 down early and claim their fourth win of the season.
Fullback Stewart was forced from the field with a head injury in the 30th minute, but returned in the second half to put the Sea Eagles in front for the first time with his 45th try in 46 games at Brookvale.
The Bulldogs had led 10-0 after 15 minutes, and were still well in the contest at 10-10 at the break. But they were made to look second rate for much of the second half as Manly skipped out for a 30-10 lead before the visitors scored two consolation tries in skipper Andrew Ryan's 200th game.
Matt Orford, who set up Stewart's try with a pin-point kick, again pulled the strings for the home side in a timely performance ahead of the announcement of the NSW City-Country teams.
Orford is facing stiff opposition from Sydney Roosters youngster Mitchell Pearce and Brisbane's Peter Wallace for the City Origin No.7 jumper.
Stewart's final 35 minutes was also strong - after a largely unhappy opening 30 - but will still likely not be enough to keep his Australian fullback spot ahead of Melbourne's Billy Slater when the Kangaroos' Centenary Test team is named this weekend to play New Zealand.
Steve Bell scored his first try of the season to level the game at 10-10 late in the first half, with Sea Eagles forwards Glenn Stewart, Glenn Hall, and Adam Cuthbertson also bagging four-pointers.
Bulldogs winger Heka Nanai opened the scoring in the 10th minute, with Sonny Bill Williams giving the visitors a surprise 10-0 lead soon after.
The Dogs let Manly back into the game with a series of errors, and after they dominated the opening 15 minutes, rarely troubled the Manly tryline for the next hour.
Dogs centre Tim Winitana eventually claimed a late consolation try seven minutes from fulltime before fullback Brent Crisp, a 21-year-old from Western Australia who reportedly ditched a burgeoning AFL career to pursue rugby league, scored perhaps the try of the game.
Crisp, who replaced in-form fullback Luke Patten (back) before kick-off, leapt high over Manly winger Michael Bani to claim a cross-field kick and then plant the ball with his feet just in play.
He also booted three from four conversions in a memorable debut.
Dogs hooker Hughes may come under scrutiny by the NRL match review committee on Monday for a late shot on Orford while kicking for Stewart's try. Read more Foxsports
