If you start well, luck may come your way??

Titans 26 defeated Broncos 24

By Gary Roberts - RLCM

Many little things in rugby league can add up to making a team successful in any given game, but sometimes things can get out of control and it is hard to get the team back onto the right track.

One little thing that is always consistent is: 'Begin well' and another is: 'If a team can keep doing the little things right, LUCK may come your way.'

Unfortunately, for the Broncos in the first 20 minutes of the game on Friday night, those two ingredients were not with them.

The Titans received a penalty on the first play of the game.
They had all the luck for the next 20 minutes.
They had 65% of the ball.
They only had to do 24 tackles.
They scored 16 points to nil.
The Broncos, in this period, had two repeat sets.

In reality, this game should have been won for the Titans and lost by the Broncos at this point.

Out of the first 20 sets the Titans had the ball for 13 sets [65%] and the Broncos had the ball for 7 [35%]. And with another approximately 60 sets [30 each] this had to be too much start for the Broncos to give to any team.

Particularly to the Titans who were playing at home before a record crowd of 27,176 at their new Skilled Park Stadium.

Nothing can be taken away from the Titans' win, but figures like those below are rare in the starting of games in the NRL.

It all began from the first play of the first set.

Titans Set 1/1 - Received Penalty - 2nd Play
Titans Set 2/2 - Score TRY from kick - 5th Play

Score 4-0

Titans Set 3/3 - Received the ball back from kick off - Kick 4th Play 40m.

- Broncos Set 1/4 - Received Penalty - 3rd Play
- Broncos Set 2/5 - Kick on 4th Play UNLUCKY NOT SCORE, TITANS LUCKY

Titans Set 4/6 - Trapped in goal 1st Play Drop out kick to Broncos [as above]

- Broncos Set 3/7 - Ball knocked on 3rd Play @ 80m line

Titans Set 5/8 - Scrum 10m, to 50m for kick on 5th Play

- Broncos Set 4/9 - Received ball 10m, to 60m for kick on 5th Play

Titans Set 6/10 - Received ball on try-line, received Penalty 2nd Play
Titans Set 7/11 - Restart 70m tap, score TRY 2nd Play

Score 10-0

Titans Set 8/12 - Received ball from kick off, KNOCKS ON 5th Play!!

- Broncos Set 5/13 - Restart 55m, forced pass 3rd Play, touched by Titans in tackle.

Titans Set 9/14 - Touched by Titans in tackle, knocked on. [As above]

- Broncos Set 6/15 - Scrum 70m, Video Ref says NO TRY from 5th Play kick. UNLUCKY NOT SCORE, TITANS LUCKY

Titans Set 10/16 - Receive Penalty. Restart 40m, kick on 5th Play, Broncos trapped in-goal.
Titans Set 11/17 - Receive ball on 50m from drop out kick, score TRY 4th Play

Score 16-0

Titans Set 12/18 - Receive ball from kick off, complete 5th Play kick to Broncos 10m

- Broncos Set 7/19 - Receive ball 10m, complete 5th Play kick to Titans 10m

Titans Set 13/20 - Receive ball 10m, complete 5th Play kick to Broncos 5m

In summary, after 20 minutes of the game, the Titans led 16 - 0 and had only done 24 tackles. They had 65% of the ball compared to the Broncos 35%.

So, before we get too carried away with the Titans' win, credit must also be given to the Broncos for coming back from a very awkward position to nearly pull the game out of the fire.

It must be remembered that the Broncos did score 24 points to 10 from after the 20th set in the first half of the game.

Their problems all started from the penalty they gave away in the first set of the game.

RLCM Stats show there were 59 sets played from after the 20th set in the first half. Overall, the Titans had the ball for 40 sets and the Broncos for 39 sets during the 80 minutes.

If you start well, luck may come your way??

THE SPECIFICS OF PLANNING With Brian Canavan

Brian Canavan is CEO at the Sydney Roosters.

Previously Brian's experience has been as a Coaching and Development Manager (Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Rugby League), Strength and Conditioning Coach (Brisbane Broncos and Queensland State of Origin), Assistant Coach (Cronulla and Sydney Roosters) and Football Manager (Sydney Roosters)

Written by Gary Roberts

Effective planning can help coaches and clubs, enabling them to get the best out of their players and themselves. Brian Canavan, Sydney Roosters Football Manager, applies a unique analogy to explain the importance of planning.

"Planning gets you on the road,' he said. "The road might have six lanes in it and you will have to change lanes every now and again but do not change the direction of your destination, as remaining on your planned track will assist in your all round success as a coach."

Following are excerpts of suggestions he puts forward to educate and assist coaches with their planning:

PLAN ASSISTANTS
Coaches have strengths and weaknesses, maybe you have a background in strength and conditioning, and you are not so strong in skills or vice versa.

So, if you want to be successful as a coach, identify your weaknesses, improve your knowledge, and enlist support staff in those areas. There are always people who will help.

PLAN SPECIFICITY
The principles relating to physical fitness components and development of these are specificity, progression and revision. Plan to make drills/activities/games as specific as you can. Obviously there has to be generalised training in the pre-season block.

PLAN PROGRESSION OF DRILLS
How often do you progress your drills, fitness, skills and games? How long do you stay with them? Your group could be an advanced group enabling rapid advancement or it could be an inexperienced group, which means you have to advance very slowly and with caution.

A general rule is to stay with a drill for two to three weeks, allowing players time to adapt and progress, and then move on. Keep it simple so that your players can learn at their own rate. You don't have to over-coach, because the majority of players will advance by themselves through experience.

PLAN REVISION, COMPREHENSION AND RETENTION
Consider the comprehension and retention rate of your players. You might deliver a drill and start feeling quite confident. But players learn from experience. What is taught to a player on day one, may not be retained for game day.

It may not be retained in two or three weeks time. Constant revision of the drill is the key to this retention, so you have got to plan for that reinforcement. Recording statistics will show you their retention rate and progression.

PLAN YOUR GOALS
In order for goals to be of value, they must be stated quantitatively and they must be measurable. Goals can be planned for individual training sessions, blocks of time in the season (eg 4 weeks), and for the longer term. When asked about season goals, everybody in team sports will say that they want to reach the finals.

But if you are appointed as coach of a `cellar dwelling' team perhaps your goal might be: `Over a 20 week season I want to ensure we win 8 games, anything.............

It's not a dream Gold Coast Titans lead NRL table
Luke Turgeon - IT is a sight some thought would always remain a dream. But for the first time in history, a Gold Coast rugby league franchise stands alone on top of the NRL ladder.

The Titans became the outright competition leaders yesterday, following Cronulla's loss to Penrith and the Roosters' capitulation against Newcastle at the weekend.

No other Gold Coast side has ever held the No.1 spot unopposed.

The Titans have now won five of their opening six games, leading to the likes of Gold Coast and Queensland legend Chris 'Choppy' Close labelling them as premiership contenders.

While it is a proud day for the young club, all involved know the hard work is only just beginning if they are to live up to all the hype their early season success has stirred.

"You don't like to look at the table after just six rounds," said Titans football manager Scott Clark.

"For a reality check you just have to look at last year where we lost eight out of our last 10.

"You have just got to worry about playing good footy every week."

With their triumphant 26-24 victory over Brisbane on Friday night, the Titans have now beaten big brother twice in their short history -- the same number of times the Giants, Seagulls and Chargers combined managed to topple the pride of Queensland rugby league in 10 years from 1988 to 1998.

While they are largely in uncharted waters, Gold Coast boss Michael Searle is confident the pressure of being touted as a finals threat would not impact on the players.

"I don't think it will bother them at all to be honest," said Searle.

"We have put more pressure on ourselves than anyone else has.

"We were talking about semi-finals at the start of the year and you can't put yourself under any more pressure than by doing that.

"The guys are just going out there and doing their thing.

"I don't think they get caught up in any of it.

"They are a level-headed group and not getting in front of themselves.

"I don't think any of them would sit around reading the Sunday papers."

The Chargers are the only Gold Coast side to have qualified for the finals, finishing seventh in a reduced 12-team competition in 1997 during the Super League war.

After a quarter of the 2008 season, Clark said the Titans were refusing to look too far into the future.

"If we can get the Warriors (round seven) and the Knights (round eight) and then we go in with a bye, we are sitting pretty well after that," he said.

"But even that is getting too far ahead. But there are winnable games coming up that is for sure." Read more

Mark Calderwood and Liam Colbon led the way with a hat-trick each against the part-time French team.

Holders St Helens fielded a weakened side but still outclassed London Skolars of National League Two 56-0.

And Wakefield ran in seven tries to beat National League One leaders Salford 38-8 at the the Willows.

Hull KR were also in the points, with 68 in a 12-try demolition of Workington.

Rochdale's Chris Forster stunned Hull FC with a try in the eighth minute but the Super Leaguers then ran in eight tries.

Warrington had a few nervous moments as Leigh cut a 16-point half-time deficit to 10 before the Wolves upped their game for a 28-16 verdict.

Carnegie Challenge Cup reviews By Ian Laybourn - Holders St Helens fielded an experimental line up but still had enough quality to comfortably reach the next round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a 56-0 victory over London Skolars on Sunday.

Saints rattled in 11 tries without reply, with Chris Flannery, Willie Talau, James Roby and Kyle Eastmond grabbing two each.

Hooker Keiron Cunningham also returned to the fold after a six-week absence with a torn quad muscle to help his side progress.

Wigan safely advanced to the fifth round with a comfortable 74-4 victory over French outfit SM Pia XIII.

The part-timers were never going to repeat the exploits of the Catalans Dragons, who won at the JJB Stadium in the engage Super League last weekend, as the Warriors were too big, too strong and too professional for their plucky but outclassed opponents.

Hat-trick heroes Mark Calderwood and Liam Colbon led the way as the home side amassed 14 tries in all, with Iafeta Paleaaesina grabbing his first two tries of the campaign and Lee Mossop also crossing the whitewash on his first-team debut.

Hull ran in eight tries to record a comfortable 42-5 victory at Rochdale.

Scrum-half Chris Forster stunned the Super League visitors with a try in the eighth minute for Rochdale.

But Hull hit back with tries by Gareth Raynor (2), Adam Dykes, Scott Wheeldon, Craig Hall, Danny Washbrook, Danny Houghton and Kirk Yeaman.

Five goals by Danny Tickle completed what eventually proved to be a comfortable victory.

Wakefield demonstrated their Super League class to coast through to the last 16 with a 38-8 victory over Salford at The Willows.

The Wildcats shrugged off the absence of 10 senior players to book their place in Tuesday's fifth-round draw.

With half-backs Danny Brough and Jamie Rooney pulling the strings, John Kear's men seized control against Shaun McRae's National League One leaders thanks to a three-try burst in a seven-minute spell in the second quarter of the match.

Warrington had a few nervous moments before securing their place in the fifth round draw with a 28-16 win at Leigh.

Huddersfield took the derby honours against neighbours Halifax with a 42-24 victory, but only after the National League One outfit had showcased their Super League ambitions with a gutsy performance.

Catalans Dragons shrugged off the speculation surrounding the future of coach Mick Potter to overcome Featherstone 22-12.

Hull KR brushed aside National League Two outfit Workington Town 68-12 with a 12-try demolition job in West Cumbria.

Former Super League outfit Widnes are also into the fifth round with a 38-12 victory over National League Two leaders Doncaster.

The Vikings have already wiped out their nine-point penalty in National One after going into administration last year but had to come from behind after tries from Luke Gale and Andreas Bauer put the hosts ahead.

However, two tries from Ian Hardman turned the tables and they crossed four more times for a comfortable victory at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Dewsbury put their league woes to one side with a 26-12 away win at Batley.

Early tries from Danny Maun and Kevin King looked to have put the Bulldogs in control but Kane Epati and Alex Bretherton replied for the Rams.

Further scores from Jake Wilson and centre Andrew Bostock then settled the tie in favour of the National One basement boys.

In-form Barrow brushed aside the challenge of Hunslet, beating their National Two rivals 48-16. James Nixon and Liam Harrison both scored a brace as the Raiders ran in nine tries.

In the other all-National Two clash, four kicks from Mick Nanyn proved key as Oldham saw off Swinton 20-8 at Sedgley Park.

On Saturday, Bradford ran riot with a club record 17-try, 98-6 romp in their fourth-round tie to blow a huge hole in Toulouse's claims for a Super League franchise.

Full-back Dave Halley scored four tries and stand-off Iestyn Harris kicked 15 conversions from 17 attempts to break the club's goalkicking record originally set by Joe Phillips in 1952 and equalled by Henry Paul eight years ago.

Bradford's score broke their previous highest set in their 96-16 Super League win over Salford in 2000.

Harlequins produced a stunning second-half fightback as Danny Orr inspired the London club to a 44-14 victory over Castleford.

Trailing 14-0 at the break, Quins ran in seven tries after the interval to surge into the fifth round.

On Friday, 17-year-old Kallum Watkins enjoyed a memorable tryscoring debut for Leeds as the Rhinos beat Celtic Crusaders 38-16.

Watkins, who turned 17 only last month, and academy team-mate Ben Jones-Bishop, who was named man of the match on his debut, both seized their opportunities to help keep the under-strength Rhinos on course for Wembley.

But they were forced to work hard for most of their fourth-round tie as the Crusaders pressed their claims for a place in Super League.

In the night's other tie, Whitehaven posted a 46-6 win over French League leaders Lezignan.

Whitehaven scored seven tries, two of them coming from Craig Calvert and others from Karl Edmondson, Gary Broadbent, Ryan McDonald, Ade Adebisi and Derry Eilbeck. Carl Rudd kicked seven conversions and two penalty goals. Read more

CO-OPERATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE NATIONAL - WEEK 3 - MATCH REPORTS

CELTIC CRUSADERS COLTS 50 GATESHEAD STORM 16 - Brewery Field, Bridgend (Saturday)

Crusaders Colts scored seven second half tries as they eventually eased to their third successive win, after the visitors had led at the break.

The Colts took just two minutes to take the lead through a Lee Williams try in their first set of the game but there was little to choose between the teams for the remainder of the opening quarter.

A well judged chip to the home in goal saw Gateshead equalise when Duncan Bain was first to the loose ball, John Coutts' conversion giving Storm the lead.

Gary Williams crossed in response but Ben Flower's pass was judged forward however there was no doubt about Ashley Bateman's score as he found a gap from Aled James' pass.

Storm regained their lead almost straight away when prop Garreth Barron powered through with Coutts converting, and they extended their lead from kick-off when Gavin Houston went over in the corner.

In a dominant spell, they also had a try disallowed when Michael Watton fed a forward pass to Bain.

Colts struck back a few minutes before half-time when Chris Vitalini broke through and ran 50 metres to score; Lloyd White converting.

The Welsh side's superior fitness showed in the second half as they scored 36 points without reply.

They regained the lead three minutes after the break when Flower fed Lee Williams and White converted again.

Lee Williams created the next try exploiting a gap for Gary Williams to cross and Gary Williams was provider for Colts' sixth touchdown by Elliot Kear in the 53rd minute.

Greg Callow finished off a fine passing move and Vitalini put Owen Lewis through on 65 minutes before Callow ran in his second and Mark Wool wrapped things up on the hooter.

White converted the last two efforts to bring up the half century.

GAME STAR: Lee Williams was the dominant force, scoring two tries and creating another.

GAME BREAKER: Elliot Kear's try in the 53rd minute earned the Colts a decisive 14-point gap.

Men of the Match: COLTS - Lee Williams STORM - Garreth Barron

HEMEL STAGS 16 BRAMLEY BUFFALOES 26 - Pennine Way (Sunday)

All the points were scored in the opening 42 minutes in a fine match, Bramley emerging victorious after making the most of their chances.

Hemel were hit by injuries but coach Troy Perkins remained upbeat about the way his side approached the task, seeing them build a sixteen point lead.

Controversially, Bramley responded when the Stags were temporarily down to 12 men in the run up to the break and the Buffaloes posted three touchdowns in nine minutes.

Centre Oliver O'Mara opened the scoring for the hosts in the third minute, Barry Jon Swindells converting.

A fine move through three pairs of hands then allowed Blake Kirby to send in Caine Wynyard to double the score.

More expansive play saw right winger Stuart McIntyre cross but Graham Harrison started the Bramley fight back with their opening try in the 23rd minute.

Danny O'Connor's surging run made it 16-10 but then Christian Champion was given ten minutes for holding down and Buffaloes ruthlessly exploited the extra man.

Matt Mulholland and Jon Nichols went over inside three minutes, Shaun Flynn's third conversion making it 22-16 to the visitors at the break.

The only score of the second period was a try by Bramley winger John Richardson but the game ebbed and flowed after that without either side being able to land a decisive knock out blow.

The best chance came with five minutes left when McIntyre was denied his second score for the Stags.

LIVERPOOL BUCCANEERS 26 EAST LANCASHIRE LIONS 18 - Blackbrook (Sunday)

Liverpool celebrated their first home fixture in the division with a hard fought win over the Lions at a blustery Blackbrook.

Playing with the strong breeze in the first half, the Buccs had best of the opening clashes and it was only some solid defence that stopped veteran prop Alex Williams and youngster Steve Alcock from registering scores for the home team.

Both defences held firm until mid way through the first half when, following a goal line drop-out, outstanding Andy Soutar fielded the kick and his pace and power saw him glide through the Lions defence to score between the posts.

James Lacey was able to increase the lead six minutes later when Ian Stanley broke the line with a powerful run and slipped the ball inside for the stand off to score; another Soutar conversion putting the home side into a 12 point lead.

The Lions, who took some time to settle, then began to play with more fluency and prompted by the excellent Anthony Murray at hooker, second row Anthony Wraith latched onto a smart ball close to the line for their first score.

With minutes to go to half time, the Lions were penalised on halfway for lifting in the tackle and Soutar, with the aid of the wind, drilled over the long range penalty giving the hosts a 14-6 interval lead.

From the restart though, Easts looked the more aggressive and from a scrum they moved the ball wide and loose forward Paddy O'Grady crossed in the corner.

Mark Pemberton's conversion went in off the post, reducing the arrears to two points.

Lions scrum half Tony Doyle was now enjoying more possession and relentlessly turned Liverpool around with his astute kicks.

Back rower and man of the match Kev Cunningham put in a number of try saving tackles but eventually the fleet footed Murray spotted a gap and waltzed in by the posts.

The goal from Pendlebury gave the visitors the lead for the first time and put them in the ascendancy but with ten minutes to go, on a last tackle play, prop Steve Alcock hoisted a massive bomb close to the Lions line, Stanley palmed the ball back for Ben Toleman who slipped a nice ball to Darren Forshaw who gleefully dived over out wide.

Soutar's difficult conversion was successful and the Buccs regained the lead, 20-18.

Then with only minutes remaining, Soutar again broke from midfield allowing Scott Porteous some space.

The scrum half eluded the tiring Lions defence and drew the full back to release Stanley on a 40 metre try scoring and match winning run.

Elimination Semi Final - Wednesday 16th April

Keighley Cougar Cubs 22 Leigh East 12

Cougar Cubs came up with their first ever win against Leigh East to earn a trip to West Hull. Despite dominating the first half, Keighley failed to break the visitor's commendable resolve although those sterling efforts told late on.

The only rewards to show from the first half were two Kris Gott penalties for a half time score of 4-0. Cubs started brightly after the break, prop Danny Snowden barging his way over for the opening try, Gott converting. Two minutes later, on the last tackle, James Haythornthwaite's fine offload allowed the supporting Ben Sagar to squeeze in by the posts.

East's hit back, with quarter of an hour remaining, with a fine for second rower and GB international Sam Hopkins. More pressure from the hosts allowed Haythornthwaite to scramble over by the posts but Leigh had the final word with a consolation score from centre Kevin Murphy, who crashed over wide out.

Final Eliminator - Sunday 20th April

West Hull 21 Keighley Cougar Cubs 20 (after extra time)

In a sensational contest, an interception try late into extra time by scrum half Leatham looked to have taken Keighley into the Grand Final, but it was left to Kaya Crawford to score in the corner in virtually the final play to give West Hull victory.

Man of the match Ellerby for Hull and Copperthwaite swapped converted tries early on and the sides were locked at 8-all at the break after adding penalties.

Sagar put Keighley ahead five minutes after the interval, Gott adding his third goal but Crawford replied and a penalty from Moor levelled at full time. Another Moor penalty eased Wests' into the lead two minutes into extra time, Gott levelling soon after.

Stand off Stamp's drop goal looked to have settled matters until the incredible late drama which will see the top two ranked sides contest the Grand Final.

RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE PREMIER SOUTH - IPSWICH RHINOS 32 SOUTH LONDON STORM 12 - Twickenham Stoop (Saturday) Ipswich came from 12 points down to win the season opener, brought forward as a curtain raiser at Harlequins, the two sides producing a superb match worthy of the grand location.

The Rhinos started nervously failing to complete their early sets to give Storm territorial advantage and, after only seven minutes, they broke away from half way, a neat off load setting up Dave Melling for opening score.

South's had a try disallowed out wide for a forward pass as they sustained pressure but following a penalty on 20 metres, Matt Chapman forced his way over between the posts; Chis Beaven landing a second conversion for a 12-0 lead on 18 minutes.

Ipswich overcame their early nerves and quick hands from a scrum set up James Goldring to crash over from twenty metres.

The try lifted the Rhinos and quick cross field passes first set up Darryl Walters then Mike Fields on angled runs to add further tries before half time, both converted by Pete LeMarquand for a slender 16-12 lead at the interval.

South London started the second half at a tremendous pace and had the Rhinos on the back foot until, on the hour, Fields' break and off load set Brendan Cook free only for him to be held on the line.

However, opportunist scrum half Adam Cook scored with a two metre scoot from dummy half on the next play

Fields was instrumental in Adam Cook's second try on sixty two minutes, off loading the ball despite the attention of three tacklers for Cook to make an angled run through to posts.

Confident Ipswich were now in top gear and dominated the final quarter hour, with victory sealed when Adam Cook's grubber cannoned back off a South London leg for him to scoop up the ball and send Goldring, determinedly wrestling through a wall of players, to touch down in the corner.

Ipswich Rhinos: Tries: Goldring (2), Walters, Fields, A. Cook (2)Conversions: Pete LeMarquand 4 from 6 defeated South London Storm Tries: Chapman, Melling. Conversions: Beaven 2 from 2.

Pride Rookie Seals Victory - Northern Pride 30-28 Easts

A LAST minute try from Barlow Park groundsman Adam Mills has allowed the Northern Pride to maintain its unbeaten start to the Wizard Cup season.

Easts were leading Saturday's dramatic clash 28-26 with only seconds remaining when Pride halfback Chris Sheppard launched the ball high into the air off his right boot.

The Tigers failed to defuse the bomb and the ball bounced favourably for Mills to dive over and put the jubilant home side in front.

The Pride missed the conversion but the damage had been done. The sound of the siren confirmed a 30-28 win for the northern newcomers - their sixth straight win of the season.

Sheppard was delighted to see Mills score the winning try on debut.

Mills spends his week days maintaining Barlow's Park lush turf and his intimate knowledge of the ground must have worked in the Atherton junior's favour in the last minute scramble.

"We were into him, saying he knows the lay of the land," Sheppard quipped.

"He was stoked with the try."

Sheppard said the vocal home crowd played its part in the come-from-behind win.

After the score was locked 8-8 at half-time, the Tigers made the most of the running in the second half to skip away to a 28-20 lead with under 10 minutes remaining.

"It was a massive lift," Sheppard said of the home town support.

"It was like there was 10,000 people in the crowd. We're only getting more support so we expect the crowds to get bigger."

The noise from the stands became even louder when players from both sides clashed in a spiteful incident early in the second half.

After the dust had settled, Pride five-eighth Stephen Sheppard was sent from the field for allegedly being 'third man in'.

The Pride camp was privately seething with the decision, claiming Chris Sheppard had been on the receiving end of an illegal hit.

Easts coach Darren Smith said he didn't have a good view of the incident and would study the tape this week.

Smith may have a number of more pressing matters to attend to.

The first-year Easts coach is sweating on the result from scans on Cameron Durnford's injured knee.

"It could be the season for him," a concerned Smith said.

"That's the worst case. We're hoping it's not that bad."

The Tigers also lost skilful forward Anthony Boyd to a knee problem in the first half.

"Hopefully it's only a minor injury and it won't be too long for him," Smith said.

Although disappointed to fall agonisingly short of victory, Smith is backing the Tigers to make a big impact in upcoming weeks.

"I'm confident in the team. We can compete with these top teams but we're just letting them in for too many points which is costly in the end," he said.

Dennis Leads From Front - Souths Logan 40-24 Wynnum Manly

EVERY good side has a player who steps up at crucial times.

For Souths Logan, that man is inspirational halfback Phil Dennis.

The nuggety playmaker produced the golden touch for the Magpies in their 40-24 Wizard Cup victory over Wynnum Manly at Davies Park today.

Dennis scored one of the Magpies' five first-half tries to help the former cellar-dwellers to a 30-12 lead at the break.

But it was his second try which held the most significance.

Souths Logan was clinging to a 30-24 and the match was anyone's. It was just a question of who wanted it most.

Enter Dennis.

The former Burdekin junior bulldozed his way through Wynnum's line and planted the ball over the white chalk.

The 73rd minute try and conversion made it 36-24 and the Magpies were well and truly on their way to their fourth victory of a promising campaign.

"I was lucky to get those two tries but it's nice to get them," a modest Dennis said.

Dennis capped off a fine game just minutes later when he popped a short ball back on the inside to the flying Quentin Laulu-Togagae, who charged over for his second.

Although rapt with the win, Dennis was a little concerned with the Magpies' lapse.

"We had a very good start but we fell away in the middle there," he said.

"It was a good thing we came back. Last week (against the Northern Pride) it just fell apart at the end and we couldn't come back so it was good to get that one today.

"The boys who have come back from Canberra are adding to us but the boys who are staying here are doing the job.

"It's a good start so hopefully it continues."

While the Magpies cemented their top three spot, the Seagulls again find themselves outside the top five and in desperate need of some consistency.

The Seagulls had their chances in the second half but paid a hefty price for a number of costly handling mistakes when the game was delicately poised.

Second-rower Luke Dalziel Don was again a standout for the Seagulls, scoring a try in each half to take his season tally to seven.

Redcliffe recruit Matt Seamark replaced Denny Lambert at halfback for the Seagulls.

Seamark and young replacement hooker Jake Granville helped spark the second-half revival.

The impressive Granville regularly caught a tiring Magpies line on the back foot in the second half until he was carried off with an ankle injury.

Jets Blow Bears Away - Ipswich 28-20 Burleigh

IN-FORM Ipswich has overturned a 20-point deficit to extend its unbeaten start to the Wizard Cup season with a dramatic 28-20 victory over the Burleigh Bears at Pizzey Park.

On a wet and windy Saturday afternoon on the Gold Coast, the Bears burst out of the blocks to lead 20-0.

A strong wind assisted Burleigh's plight in the first half. Two runaway tries from Adam Fielder, a fine four-pointer from Troy Savage and four goals from Nick Parfitt made for a dream start for Burleigh.

It took until the 38th minute for the Jets to crack Burleigh's impressive front line. But Jason Bulgarelli's try, and subsequent conversion from Scott Ireland, gave the Jets a glimmer of hope at half-time.

With the wind behind them in the second half, the Jets slowly chipped away at Burleigh's 20-6 lead.

Ipswich narrowed the gap to 20-18 following two tries to Smith Samau and successful conversions from Ireland.

Samau's first try came from a long cut-out pass from Josh Lewis. The Titans-contracted five-eighth set up the second with a pin-point accurate kick to the corner for the flying Samau.

But just when it looked like the Jets would run away with the game, the match again turned back in favour of the Bears.

Burleigh enjoyed a glut of possession from the 65th minute mark. But Burleigh couldn't find the killer blow in a nerve racking finish which saw Bears winger Trent Purdon denied a try by the video referee.

After viewing the mad scramble for the ball in the Ipswich in-goal, video referee Tony Maksoud ruled Samau had grounded the ball before Purdon.

The Jets survived that scare and only minutes late Maksoud was forced to make another tough call.

This time the video referee was called on to rule whether Ipswich flyer Scott Ireland had scored in the 73rd minute.

After chasing through a long kick from Lewis, the quick-thinking Ireland toed the ball through and then beat Burleigh's Nick Parfitt to the ball with a full-length dive.

However, Ireland was correctly ruled to have knocked the ball on in the in-goal, allowing Burleigh to cling to a 20-18 lead.

Although the try was disallowed, Ipswich was awarded a penalty on the grounds that Ireland had been impeded by Parfitt in the desperate scramble for the ball.

With another set of six up their sleeve, the Jets made the home team pay when Donald Malone carried three defenders over the try-line to put the visitors in front 22-20.

After 75 minutes, Ipswich had finally hit the front.

The Jets didn't stop there, with replacement forward Trevor Exton slicing through the line on the final play of the game to spark wild celebrations.

The gutsy win enabled the Jets to maintain a share of the competition lead (12 points) with the Northern Pride.

Burleigh (eight points) remains well placed, despite the loss.

The Bears may have to find a replacement for Troy Savage, who limped from the field with a suspected ankle injury after scoring Burleigh's second try of the game.

Comets 34 Down Wounded Tweed 32

CLASSY Tweed Heads hooker Matt King faces another extended stint on the sidelines after suffering a suspected broken foot in Tweed's demoralising loss to Central Comets at Browne Park.

King, who has only recently returned from injury, lasted 20 minutes before limping from the field.

Tweed were leading 18-6 at the time, but once King hobbled away, the Seagulls made some simple errors and eventually fell just short in front of a good crowd.

In the final minutes, Tweed's captain Brad Davis had a chance to draw the game with a kick from the sideline.

But with Comets fans jeering his every step, Davis missed. The wayward shot cemented Tweed's position at the bottom of the table.

Comets fullback Nat Bowman, thanked the fans for playing a part in his team's win.

"They (crowd) were really giving it to Davis when he was lining it up," Bowman said.

"It definitely helped so I should thank them for the win really."

Bowman rates this year's team a much better outfit than the Comets of 2007.

"We're definitely going better this season. Our backs are good this year, that's the difference," said Bowmen

"Last year we had the forwards but not the backs and this year we have both."

Tweed Heads coach Michael Woods refused to concede his team has been unlucky this season, despite this loss being their second two point defeat in six games.

"We have to be masters of our own destiny. We have to make our own luck to win," Woods said.

Luck however did go against Tweed during the match, especially in the second half where they had three tries disallowed.

Ian Donnelly was players' player for Tweed, while Comets prop Luke Fatnowna was an unlikely two-try hero for the Comets.

Devils Atone For Huge Loss - Norths 22-14 Mackay

YOUNG Bronco Joel Moon has made an eye-catching return to the Wizard Cup, piloting the Norths Devils to a 22-14 win over the Mackay Cutters in Mackay.

Moon, who normally plays five-eighth for the Devils, wore the No. 7 jersey following the late withdrawal of halfback Jacob Fauid to a hamstring complaint.

"Joel had more of a leadership role to play and he did that," Devils coach Mark Gee said.

Gee also had the luxury of having the NRL experienced Reece Robinson on the wing.

Robinson, who started the year on the flanks with the Broncos before succumbing to injury, had a solid night in Mackay.

Even with the inclusion of Moon and Robinson, the Devils were the underdogs in the eyes of many Wizard Cup followers.

That underdog status was most warranted after Norths collapsed to an embarrassing 60-10 loss to the Ipswich Jets the previous week.

In contrast, the Mackay Cutters were on top of the word after beating Redcliffe 24-22 in a thriller.

But the Cutters will have to wait another couple of weeks before they get another chance to press for their first win on home soil.

Mackay led Saturday's round six match 10-6 at half-time but all the momentum was with the slick Devils in the second half.

The visiting side skipped to an 18-10 lead before the Cutters clawed their way back into the contest with their third try.

In a tight finish, the Devils had the final say when Troyden Watene Edwards crossed to secure an eight point win.

Gee was rapt with the "attitude and effort" of his young team and knows a similar performance is needed against the Redcliffe Dolphins next week.

The Dolphins are struggling after recording just one win from their opening five matches.

"But we know Redcliffe, everyone knows Redcliffe," Gee said, wary of the Dolphins' fighting qualities.

"They've had the bye so they've had two weeks to stew on it and get things together."

Harlequins 44-14 Castleford - Harlequins fought back from a 14-0 half-time deficit to win their fourth-round Challenge Cup tie against Super League's bottom club Castleford.

Tries from Michael Shenton and Adam Fletcher, plus three goals, put the visitors well clear at the break.

Quins levelled after 53 minutes through Michael Worrincy and Chad Randall tries and three Rob Purdham goals.

And converted tries from Tony Clubb, Danny Orr, David Howell, Gareth Haggerty and Danny Ward saw Quins home.

Harlequins enjoyed the territorial upper hand in the opening 20 minutes but could not make the breakthrough and it was the visitors who struck first in a game played in greasy conditions at the Twickenham Stoop.

Shenton swooped onto a neat grubber kick, muscling past Rikki Sheriffe in the process, and dived over for a good try, with Craig Huby adding the conversion.

Quins came close to hitting back almost immediately through Sheriffe but he lost control of the ball in a tackle as he tried to twist his way over.

Henry Paul conceded a penalty for interference in the tackle and Huby edged the visitors two points further ahead.

Two minutes later Cas engineered a three on two out wide and Kirk Dixon's quick take and pass sent Fletcher over untouched in the corner.

Dixon, who had replaced Huby as kicker after he was injured in a tackle, missed with the conversion, but he added a penalty goal a minute before the break to give the visitors a 14-0 half-time lead.

Quins needed to hit back quickly and they did just that with two tries in six minutes.

First Londoner Worrincy cut back against the grain from Henry Paul's pass to score under the posts and then Randall went over from dummy half.

Rob Purdham added both conversions and suddenly Harlequins trailed by just two points.

It could have been even better for the hosts, but Haggerty spilled possession as he came on the crash ball just two yards from the line.

But they levelled the scores after 53 minutes through a Purdham penalty and went in front for the first time on the hour when Clubb rose highest to claim Orr's cross-kick.

Purdham slotted the conversion and former Cas player Orr was soon back in the action, slicing through the middle of the visitors' defence before rounding the full-back for a cracking try.

Once again Purdham was on target and he made it seven from seven after Howell and Haggerty added further tries for the hosts.

Ward went over after 78 minutes, with Paul adding the extras, as Harlequins romped clear to win a classic game of two halves.

Quins boss Brian McDermott said, "It wasn't down to me - the players had all the right things to say at half-time.

"We have a lot of good leaders in the dressing room and they knew what needed doing. To be honest I left halfway through the break and thought 'we've got this covered'."

Castleford coach Terry Matterson said, "I am dumbfounded by what happened. I probably need to get a copy of my half-time talk because I won't be using that again.

"I reckon I could have scored a treble in the second half - that is how poor our defence was.

"We are all embarrassed about it. In the second half it was just too easy for them and that is the most disappointing thing."

Steve McNamara sympathy for Toulouse By Ian Laybourn - Bradford coach Steve McNamara was full of sympathy for Toulouse after the injury-hit Frenchmen were on the receiving end of a club record score. The Bulls ran in 17 tries in a 98-6 romp in the fourth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup at Odsal, beating their previous best result, a 96-16 Super League win over Salford in 2000.

Bradford's victory margin equalled their 92-0 win over Workington at the same stage of the cup nine years ago while Iestyn Harris kicked 15 goals from 17 attempts to break the club record set by Joe Phillips in 1952 and equalled by Henry Paul eight years ago.

"You never like to see that sort of scoreline but we just had to get the job done and we did," said McNamara.

"Obviously they are doing it tough at the back end of their season but they tried their hardest.

"We made some errors if you want to be critical but I thought our players conducted themselves well throughout the game.

"The most important thing is getting through to the next round."

Full-back Dave Halley scored four tries and loose forward Glenn Morrison and winger Semi Tadulala both grabbed hat-tricks as the Bulls booked their place in Tuesday's fifth-round draw.

The embarrassing scale of defeat will do little to help Toulouse in their bid to land a Super League licence for 2009 but coach Thierry Dumaine pointed to a big injury list and an end-of-season fixture jam.

Toulouse lost to leaders Lezignan in the last match of the regular season last weekend and were beaten in the domestic play-offs by St Gaudens on Wednesday night.

The French league had refused Toulouse's request to have Wednesday's game put back a week and they lost another five players to injury in that defeat.

"We are disappointed with the score but some of our best players are injured and we had a young side out," said Dumaine.

"We knew it was a big step up and I just told my players to do their best. We are not conditioned to play 80 minutes at this level.

"If we were to come into Super League, 75% of the team would change and we would have a professional structure."

This grant will enable the Ravens to expand and develop as a club, and will help young people to learn a new sport, and new skills.

Also on Thursday 17th April, Princes Park Stadium, and Kent Ravens RLFC played host to one of the most famous trophies in world sport, the Rugby Football League Challenge Cup.

The cup, which is over 100 years old, was paraded on the pitch at the stadium, which will be the home of the Kent Ravens in their upcoming season.

People of all ages got the chance to have their photo taken with this famous trophy, and study the famous names of teams and players that have won the trophy since its beginning, the 1896-97 season.

Hopefully it inspired the young and the more experienced players even more to want to win trophies with the Kent Ravens this season.
