Queensland judges 'skewed' Team of the Century vote By Ray Chesterton - QUEENSLAND was last night accused of manipulating voting for the Team of the Century that left some NSW icons either benched or snubbed. Five Queenslanders made the prestigious side - four of them highly contentious decisions against better performed NSW players.

The five Queenslanders are props Duncan Hall and Arthur Beetson with Noel Kelly at hooker in an all-Maroon front-row. Wally Lewis is five-eighth and Mal Meninga a centre.

The selection casualties from NSW include forwards Glenn Lazarus, Ian Walsh, Ray Stehr and Sandy Pearce.

"I was stunned by the way it turned out," one selector said last night.

"How is Meninga a centre when (Graeme) Langlands and (Bobby) Fulton are on the bench?"

Another said: "I just hope everyone voted to their conscience."

Meninga's selection ahead of Langlands and Fulton says immortality is fleeting.

The team was named last night at a gala function to celebrate the game's centenary.

It was to be the premier event of festivities but the tone of the team and the selection of what many will see as less qualified Queenslanders was upsetting.

The team, by its very nature and its extensive parameters of considering 100 players drawn from different eras with different rules and different demands, was always going to be contentious.

But it was never expected to be as arguable as it turned out.

Queensland has been living with accusations of conspiracy and voting in a bloc since the voting day last December.

One Queenslander among the 28 selectors had a list of Queensland players he was going to vote for alongside him.

By voting in a bloc the Queenslanders were able to take advantage of any split votes among NSW representatives.

It would have given Meninga and Lewis a flying start for inclusion because NSW votes might have been divided between contenders such as Dave Brown, Fulton, Steve Rogers, Reg Gasnier, Langlands and Dally Messenger.

Meninga is well credentialled and his durability, endurance and resilience is respected, as is his record four Kangaroo tours and 46 Tests. But he was also switched to second-row on the 1986 tour because he could not displace centres Gene Miles or Brett Kenny.

Lewis was dropped on the 1982 tour as incumbent five-eighth. He returned later as a Test reserve before compiling an impressive career.

But he made little impression in club football and his reputation rests largely on 30 often magnificent Origin displays.

It is hard to accept players who lost their Test positions as being the best of all time.

Alternatively, Fulton (35 Tests), who was never dropped, and legendary Langlands (45 Tests) are on the bench despite their all-round dominance in their eras.

Beetson is the exception to conspiracy theories and would have garnered votes from both states.

Kelly is the only prop to make three Kangaroo tours but he lost the Test hooking position to Ian Walsh and only 13 of his 25 Tests were as hooker. Read more

Bogans v Snobs: Titans ramp up Brisbane rivalry rhetoric By Phil Lutton - If speptical fans suspect the budding rivalry between the Broncos and Titans is contrived by the media and marketeers, they need only spend a minute with Gold Coast managing director Michael Searle.

In a barb sure to add spark to tonight's clash at Skilled Park, Searle believes Brisbane's treatment of Gold Coast as "second-rate" citizens will make for a first-class local derby.

"We've always been seen as second-rate citizens, not only from Broncos players but probably their fans as well," Searle said. "I think the Gold Coast-Brisbane rivalry is generational. There's always been a condescending approach from Brisbane to the city of the Gold Coast."

Bogans, fibros, a giant retirement village - Searle has heard all the taunts. He can trace the ill-feeling to May 8, 1988: the round 10 clash between the Gold Coast-Tweed Giants and the Broncos at Seagulls Stadium in front of 13,432 fans. With former Sea Eagle Ron Gibbs instrumental, the Giants defeated a star-studded Broncos side 25-22.

"Ron Gibbs and Chris Close ripped apart the Broncos - which were potentially an Origin football team at that stage - and I think the rivalry from that day forth has been strong," Searle said.

Even if some of the Titan's imports are yet to understand the cultural importance of beating up on Brisbane, Searle said the punters in the stands had a deep appreciation of the frayed relationship between the two regions.

"It's not only the relationship between the teams, it's the relationship between the cities," he said. "You can't manufacture these sorts of rivalries. They just happen. Marketers can do whatever they want . It's an opportunity for the people of the community to say, 'Our city won."'

Searle hopes 27,000 blue-clad fans will be saying just that tonight.

Mick Potter in talks with St Helens - Catalans Dragons coach Mick Potter is in talks with St Helens about succeeding fellow Australian Daniel Anderson. Saints are now favourites to win a tug of war for the 44-year-old Potter, who has been offered a new two-year contract by the Perpignan club after guiding them to third place in the engage Super League.

Potter, who also impressed Saints by leading the Dragons to the Challenge Cup final at Wembley last August, has been their top target since Anderson announced that he would be returning to Australia more than 12 months ago. Reports suggest Potter has opted for Knowsley Road, with the club expected to confirm his appointment in the next 48 hours, but he insisted that no decision has yet been made.

"That's news to me," he said. "My manager has spoken to both clubs and I'm just weighing up the options. It's moving forward but I've not put a time frame on it, although I need to get it sorted fairly soon.''

Potter, who was also linked with two recent vacancies in Australia's National Rugby League, admits he is torn between a settled life in the south of France and the lure of a big Super League club.

"I'm enjoying it here," he said. "The lifestyle is good and we're not going too bad at the moment. There is a lot of appeal for St Helens, especially with the quality of personnel they've got there and the people who run the organisation seem to be professional. It's not cut and dried. I'll do what's best for myself and my family. At this stage, I'm straight down the middle."

A full-back with St George from 1989-93, Potter began his coaching career in England in 1996, the first year of Super League, as assistant to Matthew Elliott at Bradford Bulls.

He left Odsal in 1998 and eventually rejoined his old club and also coached the New South Wales Under-17 squad until February 2006, when he was head-hunted by David Waite to succeed Englishman Steve Deakin at the Catalans.

Although they picked up the wooden spoon in their first season in Super League, Potter has orchestrated a gradual improvement and their win at Wigan last Friday extended their club record unbeaten run to six matches. Read more

Harrison plans to follow Scott around - TITANS lock Ashley Harrison says he is not feeling the added pressure of stepping into the boots of star dual-international Mat Rogers after being thrust into five-eighth for tonight's Broncos blockbuster.

Junior Coaching Book 2
Maroons need JT and me By Dan Koch - For Gold Coast Titans skipper Scott Prince, the 2004 State of Origin series is both a treasured memory and source of frustration. His three matches in the Maroons jersey that year sit alongside the premiership when he was captain of Wests Tigers in 2005 as career highlights.

Yet Prince cannot hide his frustration at being overlooked in the three years since. His annoyance is aimed not so much at the fact selectors have opted for North Queensland's Johnathan Thurston, but more at what he now knows about himself.

"Don't get me wrong, it's great to be mentioned as a contender, but it gets to me because I look back and I know how much better a player I am now," Prince said.

"I am more experienced, I have experience in big games, I can control the game better and I am a much better defender than I was. I just feel I have done my time and I am ready for a crack.

"I am not trying to take anything away from JT and you can't dispute his results over the past couple of years.

"But at the end of the day I don't feel he is any better player than me. He is skilful and I respect what he has achieved - you have to. But I don't feel he's any better than me."

On his form this season, it is difficult to imagine there is anyone who could question Prince's case for a recall to Origin.

He has been the standout player in the competition, guiding the Titans to equal first on the NRL ladder after five rounds and he again looms as the key man in tonight's match against Brisbane at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.

However, Prince is convinced there are those who doubt his ability to transfer the skills he displays at club level to the representative arena.

"All of it is out of my hands," Prince said. "But if they want you in the team, they will find a way to accommodate you.

"They play any number of guys out of position, but say JT and I play halfback and they can only pick one of us."

In 2005, Broncos coach Wayne Bennett rated Prince's departure from the Broncos at the end of 2003 as one of the biggest regrets of his coaching career.

Having arrived in Brisbane from the Cowboys in 2001 as one of the game's most exciting young talents, Prince endured a horrific three seasons, marred by back-to-back broken legs, knee and hamstring injuries. The first broken leg came just days after the death of his father, Les, who was killed in a car accident.

At the end of his third year, Prince, who was stuck in reserve grade behind Ben Ikin and Shaun Berrigan, was offered the chance to reunite with Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens, who had given him his break at the Cowboys.

"I have always thrived on having that bit of extra responsibility. It was a role Tim gave me at the Cowboys and it was the same at the Tigers," Prince said.

However, Prince looks back on the time in Brisbane as the making of him as a player, captain and a man. The hours spent alone on the training track and in the gym instilled a mental toughness.

"Not many guys have to go through what Scott did at 21, but he got through a pretty tough period and has developed into a pretty special player and leader," former Brisbane captain Gorden Tallis said.

"You can just see how he has grown. Watching him play for the Titans he is such a dominant player and really leads the team in every aspect on and off the field.

"It also adds something special to every meeting he has had and will have with his former club, particularly at the Titans - the club he has helped build." The Australian

McClennan's sights firmly on Challenge Cup - Leeds Rhinos coach Brian McClennan has targeted the Challenge Cup in his first season with the club. Rhinos begin their campaign at home to minnows Celtic Crusaders in the fourth round on Friday night.

McClennan told BBC Radio Leeds: "I respect the history and understand what it means to the fans and to a city to get to London and play at Wembley. All the players are very determined and that's one of our goals - to win the Challenge Cup."

McClennan has long been a fan of the competition and is well aware of what it would mean to the supporters should the Rhinos win the trophy for the first time since beating London in 1999.

"In New Zealand we get the Challenge Cup every year and it's on at three in the morning and I remember getting up as a young boy to watch those games so I understand the history."

Question from Leaguecoach Discussion eGroup

Coaching Under 8's

I am coaching Under 8's for the first time and I am looking to improve my general coaching knowledge specific to juniors.

Could anybody help me with reading material because I need more knowledge on drills, improving overall skills and motivation.

Cheers and look forward to some wisdom.

Rob Baines

Answer 1

Re: Coaching Under 8's

In my location Under 8's is non-competitive, sure there are tries etc, but no ladder or finals.

"Some things are obvious to some but not to others."

Emphasis on enjoyment in the game and learning the skills to play the game is what its all about.

Children have a low attention span so the coach being organised for training is a step in the right direction.

So long as the coach does not spend too long on any one thing, after about five minutes on one thing you'll most probably notice a few getting bored and losing interest.

Try setting up for your session with the team prior to it, so that you already have organized what you will be doing. so as to move from one thing to next smoothly.

Also, if you have a trainer working with you it allows him/her an idea of whats next also, no one plans to fail they just usually fail to plan.

Try teaching them a skill then put that into a simple drill for them to try, then what they have been taught then tried turned into game/race/competition for them to play works quite well so long as
things are kept simple.

Kids at a young age don't need the fitness aspect in training like teenagers do, keeping them on the move is good enough.

Rob if you don't have one buy your self a whistle, it will not only help keep the young nippers in control, but get them used to playing to the whistle.

I know its all obvious stuff but I hope it is to some benefit.

I am not sure if you have completed your coaching certificate, but if you contact the developement officer for your region they should be able to pass on some material to you.

Yours in League
A.J

Answer 2

Re: Coaching Under 8's

The problem with under U6's to U8's is that they have an attention span of a nat.

What I have done in the past is be prepared to do at least 6-8 different drills a training session.

If something is working continue to do that until they show the slightest signs that they are getting bored. You won't necessary use all 8 activities in a training session but if you are prepared to do the extra planning you have that in reserve.

Try tackling a tyre tube that is rolled at different angles.

Also plan out at least 6 weeks of training. When you do your Level Two Certificate you are required to do this to obtain you Certificate, so just go back to you notes.

If you don't have that go to your district club they keep training videos etc with the local development officers.

Regards,

Wyatt
