New Zealand Rugby League - Cleaning up a messy game By Peter Jessup - It will take a strong presentation of a plan that promises success from the New Zealand Rugby League bosses if they are to head off further blood-letting at the annual general meeting in Auckland on Saturday.
There is much angst in league circles at the cost over-runs from last year's tour to England as well as other expenditure under former chairman Andrew Chalmers which is seen by many as having got out of hand, especially when the promised income never materialised.
The feeling now is that those of the 15 districts which were coerced and convinced to back Chalmers' revamp of the NZRL constitution want to reverse that, especially the change whereby the chairman is elected by the board rather than by votes from the districts. That gave Chalmers the opportunity for in-house politicking, which the districts now see as destructive.
The board aims to present all details of the tour losses and other financial fallout, with the intention of heading off any witch hunt.
To that end, three weeks ago it asked the districts to send notice of any questions in writing. The response has turned up more than 100 specific queries, some relating to matters that are several years old.
But throughout the broader league community there is hope the queries can be dispensed with smoothly, rather than via an extended raking of the coals, and that a "big-picture" plan offering a better future will be put forward.
There are, however, nagging suspicions that the board and management are not equipped to push such a plan through to fruition. There is already concern at the length of time it has taken to see facts and figures or any real change since Chalmers left, especially given the parlous state of the game and its finances.
One month away from a test against the world's best - what should be a decent drawcard and a good money-spinner - the Kiwis still have no signed-and-sealed sponsorship deals. As it is World Cup year, surely a marketable commodity, deals should have been tied up long ago. Instead, the NZRL is already spending the projected profits, having taken an advance from the Australians to help them over 2007's $1.3 million loss.
There is no national competition and, after years of pouring money into the Bartercard Cup only to see their players disappear to the cities then on to the NRL, Super League and France, the provinces are wary of what's next.
Those who resigned from the board when Chalmers did have been replaced but it still looks like an oval table of old footy heads. Those who remain from the board under Chalmers will face questions as to what they knew and when, and why nothing was done to rein in the spending and limit other damage. Read more NZ Herald

Neil Henry the crucial cog in coaching machinations By Brad Walter - Neil Henry holds the key to the coaching merry-go-round, with the Raiders mentor top of the wish lists of tonight's rivals, Brisbane and North Queensland.
Although contracted to Canberra until the end of next year, Henry is the subject of a three-way tug-of-war after being strongly courted by the Broncos and Cowboys to replace their respective departing coaches Wayne Bennett and Graham Murray.
How firm the Raiders are prepared to stand on Henry's deal may decide the issue, with North Queensland believed to want him only if he can take over from Murray next year.
Brisbane, whose chief executive, Bruno Cullen, met Henry in Canberra last week, are prepared to consider appointing an interim coach for one year - but may then change tack and pursue Melbourne's premiership-winning mentor Craig Bellamy.
Having been offered a five-year deal by the Cowboys, Henry's preference is thought to be a return to North Queensland, where he worked for five seasons as Murray's assistant before taking charge of the Raiders last year.
But Canberra are keen to extend Henry's contract, and if they make it clear he would not be granted a release from his current deal, the former Raiders lower-grade player may agree to their offer and stay. Should that occur, Cowboys assistant Ian Millward is expected to be handed the North Queensland job - although he is clearly not the first choice of some board members.
Millward, who led St Helens to every piece of silverware available to Super League clubs during a successful nine-year stint in England before returning home to Australia last season, is also a leading candidate for the St George Illawarra job should Nathan Brown be axed.
As the Herald reported on February 8, Bennett has been the favourite to replace Brown since he announced his resignation from the Broncos three days earlier - but the Dragons won't make any official move until about eight weeks into the season.
A clearly frustrated Brown yesterday refused to answer questions about his future, telling the media at Dragons training in Wollongong he only wanted to talk about tomorrow night's game against the Raiders in Canberra.
"There's obviously been plenty of speculation about my job," Brown said before a question had even been asked.
"The club has been going through a process now for a period of time, which I've been very well informed and up to date with. So the only thing I'm interested in is talking about Canberra, which is going to be a very tough game."
A list of potential candidates has been drawn up by Dragons chief executive Peter Doust that features Bennett, Millward and five others - including Bellamy - but St Helens and former Warriors mentor Daniel Anderson has indicated he would no longer be interested.
Anderson is due to be interviewed by Cullen for the Brisbane job, but there are a number of other candidates, and he may have to wait for a vacancy to arise elsewhere - possibly at Penrith, whose coach, Matthew Elliott, confirmed last night that captain Petero Civoniceva had approached him during the week on behalf of the players.
However, Elliott insisted their discussion was more about "bookkeeping issues" than any potential player revolt, and when asked if he expected to still be coaching the Panthers next season if the club had another unsuccessful year, he said: "I do expect to be around because I expect to be successful." Belief -- the biggest weapon in a player's arsenal By Titans coach John Cartwright BELIEF IS a big thing in life. In football it is everything. Without it there is no use lacing on a boot or even considering going into battle. You can have all the attacking skills in the world. You can be built like a man mountain, but if you have too many doubts about yourself then all of the positives quickly disintegrate.
I have seen the positives and negatives of `belief' make or break players and teams on numerous occasions. Some players appear born with it -- a huge reservoir of confidence in what they can do. When this confidence is warranted it is a pleasure to watch.
I have noted players as teenagers with belief beyond their years. Sometimes it comes across in a brash, arrogant manner. `Get out of my way. I am a champion and soon you all will realise that,' they say with words and mannerisms.
We have all seen it, whether in sport, at home or even at work. I think such confidence is commendable. But there will always be a time when that talk will be put to the test.
In the NRL it happens every weekend. If you have a weakness you will be found out. At some stage, sooner rather than later, the talkers have to prove their mettle. If they do, good on them. They have put enormous pressure on themselves and they have come out as the real deal.
If they don't then the world knows it, they themselves know it and that can hit harder than any shoulder charge. In individuals, the confidence I like is the quiet smouldering kind. As an onlooker you know that it is there, but it doesn't scream out at you.
A classic example is Luke `Bull' Bailey. As a player and a person he has a presence about him. There is no punching the air, no outrageous statements, just deeds. He is the classic gunslinger out of the old west, short on words, big on action.
The Titans are just babies as far as NRL clubs go, but in our year-and-a-bit history Bailey has already proven time and again that he is a major cornerstone of whatever success we have.
The first round clash with the Cowboys was a classic example. Our opening game at Skilled Park, we needed to make an impression. So much was riding on that game.
In the 11th minute Bailey carted the ball up about 15 metres out from the Cowboys line. There was nothing 'on'. But Bull's belief said otherwise.
The first line of defence crashed into Bailey. But that didn't stop him. More tacklers swooped. The Bull kept charging.
With defenders hanging off him like wreckage the big legs kept pumping and Bailey found the tryline. That was our first points of the season. Luke Bailey laid the platform.
There were other highlights -- four tries to Jordan Atkins for starters -- but Bailey's try was the foundation. From there our belief was confirmed and we went on to a great win.
Just as belief and confidence is contagious, so is a lack of either. We only had to go as far as Monday night's game against the Dragons.
Our preparation was great, so was our commitment, but something was missing. We have a woeful away record and obviously we have worked hard to set that record straight. There was plenty done during the off-season on our off-field approach to away games. No stone left unturned.
Yet we again came up short on the road. I have no doubt this tide will turn. We will string wins together away from home and suddenly players will have confidence.
There will be no hoodoo, monkey, whatever. There will just be belief. Read more GC Bulletin

Winger Adam Fletcher extends Castleford contract - The Tigers have extended their deal with Aussie winger Adam Fletcher, agreeing a contract until the end of the season. Fletcher returned to the Tigers in the opening week of the current season on a trial basis, having had a spell at the Jungle in the latter half of the 2006 campaign, and today agreed a new deal for the rest of the SLXIII season.
He joined the Tigers from Queensland Cup side Redcliffe Dolphins and in his first spell scored 8 tries in 13 appearances for the club. Leaving the Jungle at the end of the 2006 season he played very little rugby in 2007 but having kept fit with some boxing was soon in action for the Tigers this year and has played in five of the eight rounds.
Adam said: "I'm pleased that this has been sorted and happy to be staying with the Tigers for the rest of the season. I enjoy it here and as I said when I came over earlier in the season, probably shouldn't have left after my first stint." Castleford Online

Elliott accepts pressure-cooker reality By Brent Read and Stuart Honeysett - Penrith coach Matthew Elliott would prefer people weren't talking about his job security but he can certainly understand it. In his second year at the Panthers, Elliott has presided over successive losses to start the season, prompting speculation his position may be under threat.
The coach is hurting as much as anybody. He joined Penrith from Canberra, where he helped an under-resourced club regularly appear in the finals.
At Penrith, his stint has been highlighted by the exact opposite. The Panthers are a club with resources the envy of many in the NRL, yet they have won only eight of their past 26 games.
Those dire results have resulted in Elliott joining the coterie of coaches under pressure. The group includes St George Illawarra's Nathan Brown and the Bulldogs' Steve Folkes, both of whom are expected to be replaced at the end of the season.
"I'm a grown up," Elliott said.
"If I think that questions aren't going to be asked ... when the team performs the way it has been, I am kidding myself.
"We came last last year. I understand the question is being asked. It's certainly new for me. I have never been in this position before.
"I would prefer people not be talking about my personal job security because it impacts on staff and family. While you don't prefer it, you understand it.
"I'm not happy. If I'm not happy it would be pretty naive of me to think other people involved and stakeholders were happy. I'm filthy."
The club's leadership group this week approached Elliott with concerns over the training regime.
They wanted the workload reduced and Elliott took their advice.
"They felt like were leaving a bit too much on the training paddock," Elliott said.
While Elliott was happy to discuss speculation about his future, Brown produced his best sidestep to avoid questions on the subject.
Brown is off-contract at the end of this season and is expected to be told next month that he won't be at the club next year.
The Dragons are pursuing Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett and there are suggestions that the deal has already been done.
Aware the inevitable was coming at a press conference in Wollongong yesterday, Brown tried to avoid the issue and spoke mainly about the Dragons' game against Canberra on Saturday night in Canberra.
"There has been plenty of speculation about my job," Brown said.
"The club has been going through a process now for a period of time of which I've been very well informed.
"The only thing I'm interested in talking about is Canberra which is going to be a very tough game."
When asked if it was difficult doing his job given his uncertain future, Brown replied: "Canberra is going to be a very hard game.
"We haven't won down there for a long time and we're going to go down there this week and we're very determined to play very good footy, as we did last weekend."
Asked if he had spoken to Bennett about the club's pursuit of the Brisbane coach, Brown said, "I've been working very hard on Canberra this week because it's going to be a very hard game.
"I understand you've got to ask the question but my interest is in Canberra."
Bulldogs' chief executive Todd Greenberg said the club would wait until the middle of next month to make a decision on its coaching direction.
In response to reports Folkes' fate had already been decided, Greenberg said the issue was yet to be discussed by the board.
However, he and chairman George Peponis conceded the time for a decision was imminent.
"We'll talk about it the next time the board get together," Greenberg said.
Current Bulldogs assistant coach, Kevin Moore, is favoured to take over from his brother-in-law should Folkes' contract not be renewed. The Australian

It's about sense, not cents, Lowie By Dean Lonergan - It saddens me to see that Graham Lowe is pursuing an unfair dismissal case against the New Zealand Rugby League for a six-figure sum.
Lowie has been a mate of mine for 20 years so I choose my words for this column carefully and I guess this is an open letter to Lowie.
Mate, everything that you set your mind to in our great game, you achieved it and more, from coaching the Kiwis with success to coaching and winning with Wigan and Manly and the Queensland side in State of Origin. Everything you turned your hand to turned to gold. And when you wanted to own and run the Warriors you did that too.
When you wanted to be a media commentator you did that and when you wanted to get back into the game for the NZRL but, on your own terms, you did that as well.
Over the years, Lowie, you have professed many times how much you love the game and, having known you for so many years, I know this to be true. So I can't believe that when the game is financially crippled and the revamped board find it necessary to cut costs you don't just cop it sweet and say "fair enough".
Instead you have to take the game you love and potentially pile-drive it into the ground by pursuing money it doesn't have.
You may well have a grievance with some of the personalities running rugby league and you may be able to make this stand up in the Employment Court and win a payout.
But Lowie, is it the right thing to do to the game? The people with whom you have grievances are not the ones who will have to foot the bill if you win - it will be the grassroots of the game that will suffer.
Over the years, because of your success in rugby league and the heights you reached, the game has looked after you and you have been well paid.
Why is it that now - at the end of your incredible career - you feel it necessary to take a swing right between rugby league's legs with a pair of No. 12 boots?
The sport cannot afford to take that sort of punishment from you. Read more NZ Herald

QRL Wizard Cup Preview
TWEED HEADS v BURLEIGH *Live on ABC TV Ned Byrne Field, Saturday March 29 - 2pm Referee: Gavin Morris - TWEED Heads enter the local derby in desperate need of the two competition points after dropping their opening two matches of the season.
The 2007 premiers have failed to fire in the opening rounds, with last weekend's 20-12 loss to the Norths Devils following on from a round one defeat at the hands of Redcliffe. In contrast, the Burleigh Bears have sailed through the first two weeks with impressive wins over Easts and the Central Comets. Last weekend's 40-10 belting of the Comets ensured the Bears gained a share of the competition lead.
Burleigh coach Jimmy Lenihan has had the luxury of naming the same 17 players who easily disposed of the Comets. New Burleigh centre Adam Fielder has been a big hit for the Bears in the opening rounds. He crossed for two tries last week in an encouraging sign for the Bears.
NORTHERN PRIDE V NORTHS Barlow Park, Saturday March 29 - 6pm Referee: Justin Davis - HIGHLY impressive in its first match on the road, the in-form Northern Pride returns home in high spirits for the round three clash against Norths at Barlow Park. The strong Pride line-up includes North Queensland Cowboys players Ben Vaeau, Steve Southern, Jackson Nicolau, Matthew Bartlett, John Williams and Scott Bolton.
Bolton, Williams and Southern will make their debuts for the Cairns-based club in this match. Nicolau is taking over the five-eighth duties from Steven Sheppard who will miss Saturday night's clash after suffering a sternum injury against Redcliffe.
The Devils showed plenty of grit to fight off Tweed Heads last weekend. But it remains to be seen whether their young forwards can match it with the Pride's fearsome pack.
MACKAY v IPSWICH Mackay Junior Fields, Saturday March 29 - 7.30pm Referee: Rob Gallacher - A MASSIVE crowd is expected to pack into the Mackay Junior Grounds for Saturday's Wizard Cup clash between the Cutters and Ipswich Jets. With enormous backing from the local community, the Cutters have organised a game-day extravaganza full of fire works, live bands and prizes.
The big bash is all in aid of helping the city's flood victims. On the field, the Cutters will be chasing their first victim after two early losses. Although disappointing in the opening rounds, the Cutters have a host of classy players.
Hooker Anthony Watts was a standout for the Cutters in their 18-10 loss to Wynnum last week. Ipswich coach Kevin Walters has named Leigh Coghill on the bench for his first taste of top grade action with the Jets. The Jets may yet be boosted by the late inclusion of Titans players Kris Kahler, Smith Samau, Brad Meyers and Gavin Cooper.
CENTRAL COMETS v SOUTHS LOGAN Browne Park, Saturday March 29 - 7.30pm Referee: Nick Kalpakidis - AFTER an impressive win over Easts, the new-look Magpies are strongly tipped to beat the Central Comets on Saturday.
The Comets have the advantage of playing at home, but the form line suggests the Magpies will be ultra hard to topple in this one. Souths Logan coach Paul Bramley has again received an injection of Canberra Raiders talent, with Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Michael Dobson and Ben Jones among a host of NRL contracted players in the Magpies line-up.
After scoring two tries in the victory over Easts, Colin Best has returned to the Green Machine. Best's selection has paved the way for Quetin Laulu-Togagae's return to the Wizard Cup ranks in the No. 1 jersey.
REDCLIFFE v WYNNUM MANLY Dolphin Oval, Sunday March 30 - 3pm Referee: Justin Eastwood - THE first leg of the Herald Cup promises to be a fierce contest, with both sides out to prove a point or two.
The Dolphins lacked cohesion in an error-riddled performance against the Northern Pride, while the Seagulls were well below their best in their scrappy eight-point win over Mackay. Redcliffe has listed the clash as Michael Roberts' 200th game for the Dolphins.
The emotion surrounding the milestone of one of Redcliffe's favourite rugby league sons is sure to ignite the Dolphins in front of their loyal home fans. Wynnum Manly has a poor record at Dolphin Oval but coach Shane McNally has a powerful squad at his disposal. The Bayside club has been boosted by the return of strike centre Steve Irwin from suspension. QRL Online

SHARKS PUT 'FITNESS FIRST' WITH NEW SPONSORSHIP DEAL - Fitness First has announced a new partnership with the LG Sharks Club which includes a team sponsorship and an exclusive, private training facility at the new Fitness First Cronulla Club which is due to open on Thursday 8 May 2008 next door to the Cronulla Leagues Club.
The three year deal makes Fitness First the official shorts sponsor and also the official training facilities provider for the NRL team.
Fitness First CEO Tony de Leede said the new partnership with LG Sharks was a natural collaboration with the pending opening of the new gym next door to the Leagues Club.
"We're proud to be a partner of the Sharks and to be able to play a vital role in their fitness and game preparation through the facilities they will enjoy in our new Cronulla gym," said Mr de Leede.
The Fitness First Cronulla club will provide the Sharks with their own training room and physiotherapy rooms for the team's exclusive use. The players will also be able to make use of the club's other facilities including a cycle studio, cardio and weights area and steam room.
"We're thrilled with the improved facilities the team will enjoy through the new partnership with Fitness First and excited about having access to the latest fitness equipment," said Sharks head coach Ricky Stuart.
"It allows for a new and professional environment for all our players from NRL to development squads."
The Fitness First Cronulla club will also offer the Fitness First / MBF 'Adopt a School' program to local high schools (Years 7 - 12), providing students with exclusive group fitness classes which are run during school hours, by qualified Fitness First instructors. Fitness First and MBF fully fund the AAS program so there is no cost to the students, parents or the schools. During school holidays, schools students aged 14 to 18 can also use the Cronulla club for free once signed in by a parent of guardian as part of the FFIT Holidays program.
"Our partnership with the Sharks and programs such as Adopt A School and FFIT Holidays are an ideal way for us to be an active part of the Cronulla Sutherland community," said Mr de Leede.
The new Fitness First Cronulla gym is due to open Thursday 8 May, with an 'open weekend' on Saturday 31 May and Sunday 1 June to celebrate the opening and give local residents and Sharks fans the chance to tour the facilities and try some of the fitness programs on offer. Details of the open weekend will be announced soon, but Sharks players will be involved on the day. Fitness First will also be taking part in the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks Fan Day on Saturday 12 April.

Moree Boars Rugby League team in doubt By Kerrie Matchett - The Moree Boars Rugby League coaches are concerned that this year they may not have an under 18's team to enter the competition.
First Grade coach Paul Raveneau said if more players did not register their interest in playing for the under 18's team, the club would not be able to field a team.
He said the club had always entered three grades into the Group 4 competition and was concerned the club may not be able to do so this year.
"It will be the first time," Raveneau said.
He said a few players from last year's team had moved into the senior teams but the majority of players from last year had not attended training.
Raveneau said there were about four under 18's players who were attending training sessions with under 18's coach Kerry John Haines but the club needed between 20 to 25 players to field a team.
"We're struggling for numbers and I want to encourage as many young fellows as possible to come down to training on Tuesday and Thursday nights," Haines said.
He said he had seen a few players from last year around town who had expressed interest in joining the team but who had not turned up to training yet. "They need to get to training so we know what numbers we've got," Haines said.
Raveneau said this year the club aimed to play more Saturday matches during the competition.
He suspected that the Sunday matches played last year were a deterrent for some players.
"They don't want to get up the next day and go to work sore," Raveneau said.
Any players between 16 and 18 years of age need to attend the next Boars training sessions at Bloomfield Oval on Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm to ensure the club will have a team. Moree Champion Online

COACHING NEWSLETTER
TODAY'S coaching extract 'Captaincy' with Mark Coyne written by Ashley Bradnam the article appeared in RLCM Book 11
.................. Jack Gibson once said of captaincy, 'the job gives the man authority - but his behaviour earns him respect.'
The role of the captain is often overlooked by the coach, when searching for answers to a team's problems. Sure, most people know the job is important, but how many coaches consider whether they have the right person in the job to begin with?
If the captain isn't performing his role to the best of his ability, there's a good chance the team's on field performance may also suffer.
So, what type of person makes a good captain?
Mark Coyne captained St George from 1994, and is regarded as a shining example of a leader who is capable of getting the best out of his players. According to Coyne there's three major criteria needed for the job."Respect, communication, and a willingness to lead by example,"
Lets start with respect. Coyne uses the word liberally when discussing the topic of captaincy. "Firstly, the captain needs the respect of his players. If your players don't respect you, they won't respect your decisions, and that may mean they won't follow them... This leads to on-field confusion, which obviously is never desirable".
But the captain must also have respect for his coach. The captain is the spokesman on behalf of the players, and a good relationship with the coach is critical, it lays the platform for open communication within the team unit. The same can be said where the referees are concerned."
This leads into the second point - communication.
Communication, is a two way process, it's not just talking, but listening as well. "You have to listen to the people who matter, your coach, your players, and make decisions based on what you learn from them. Effective communication starts at training, preparing for the game, so that everybody understands the team's objectives when on the field. If we receive a penalty, and our hooker spies an opening for quick tap, I should have already spoken to him about whether he should go for it or not.
If he waits to talk to me about it in the game, the opportunity will be lost".
"The third point is leading by example, a critical component in the captain's armoury.
Every step a captain takes is sure to be watched, by someone.
Leading by example is visible management, showing the team how to behave on and off the field. It's no good if I am cutting corners at training and then asking my players to dig deep in the match.
I set the standard for the rest of the team as far as our attitude in the way we approach training and performance is concerned.
Captaincy is a skill, and like any skill, it can be practised to achieve better performance. Whether you are a top swimmer, or gymnast, or singer, by practising the skills of your trade, you will become more advanced in executing them".
As a coach, consider the person who has the (c) next to his name in the program.
