Can Thurston's shoulder stand Titans test? By Luke Turgeon - THE Gold Coast Titans have a message for Johnathan Thurston -- expect one hell of a welcome back party.
The inspirational Cowboys skipper looks almost certain to line-up for North Queensland tonight at Skilled Park, completing an incredible comeback from dual shoulder surgery a month ahead of schedule.
Titans coach Johan Cartwright said some of his forwards 'eyes lit up' when told the news yesterday, no doubt already plotting how they will exploit the Queensland and Test halfback in the defensive line.
"A lot of the guys have had reconstructions before and they know how tough it is to come back from," said Cartwright.
"Those first few weeks can be very dodgy.
"I think Princey would look forward to him playing.
"He has got eyes on an Origin jumper and it is a chance to test yourself against the best."
Bookmakers across the country took tens of thousands of dollars on the Cowboys to topple the Titans at Robina on Wednesday, on the back of rumours Thurston was set to return.
Titans centre Mat Rogers said the news came as no surprise to him.
"I asked Johnathan if he was playing at that big fan day we had (in Sydney last month) and the answer that I got, mate, he couldn't lie straight in bed," said Rogers.
"I went straight to Carty then and said, mate he is playing round one.
"So I have known he was playing since then.
Asked if Thurston would be a weak link in defence, Rogers replied: "You would think so."
"He is the one who hasn't had any game time so we will see how he goes.
"But on the other hand if he is playing in the NRL he has obviously been tested and they are confident.
"But we will test him again."
Wide-running Titans back rower Mark Minichiello, who has had three shoulder reconstructions in the past, predicted Thurston would attract more traffic than the Tugun merge.
"If he comes out there we are going to make him make some tackles, probably more than usual, so we will see how he holds up," he said. "Coming back from any operation you always have a little bit of doubt on yourself unless you have done a lot of tackling at training and he is confident in it. We will just wait and see what happens."
Thurston, who only resumed contact training earlier this week, warmed up with the rest of the squad at Skilled Park yesterday afternoon for the pre-game hit out, before secretive Cowboys coach Graham Murray closed the session to the media after 15 minutes. A stone-faced Murray hinted he would give Thurston up until the hour before the match to decide whether or not he would play.
"He's done all his contact work, he excelled actually," said Murray.
"He's done everything asked of him this week. He's hit tackle bags but also individuals. Whether he has done enough, it will be up to the coaching and medical staff and in particular Johnathan himself." Read more GC Bulletin

Changes for a better game By By Peter Jessup - While rugby flounces about trying new rules that have clearly opened the game up but apparently will not be brought into widespread use, league has made one simple adjustment to achieve the same thing without rewriting the rule book.
The reduction from a 12 to a 10-man interchange will change some games, for sure, especially those where key players are injured and the bench is shortened to three. It means that in most games all the forwards will play more minutes.
Eighty-minute players will become more valuable; huge, hulking props and secondrowers who require breathers less so. It will open holes for the smaller scooters at the back end of each half as the big men tire of the collision work. And it will mean a change in approach for the coaches, who will have more video time as they analyse each other's adjustments.
It's doubtful that anyone will abandon the two-hooker approach. But the four-forward bench may be a thing of the past.
The game will get faster as a result of other changes to the interpretation of rules. Before bringing in the changes, the NRL took advice from former coaches including Warren Ryan, former players including Laurie Daley and Matt Rodwell (who is manager of the Players Association), its referees' boss Robert Finch and the Kangaroos and Bulldogs doctor Hugh Hazard.
The grapple tackle and the "crusher" where the head, neck or upper body of a tackled player is pushed into and held to the ground is outlawed, with officials told to use the red card and everyone warned that the judiciary will not treat such cases lightly.
This may affect the plans of Melbourne who were experts at grappling. It will mean players having to clear the tackle area more quickly, and defenders having to retreat the 10 metres quicker. It offers the attacking side the chance of a ragged line, with holes opening. It increases the stamina demand and the likelihood of fatigue.
Referees can now allow a quick 20 metre tap restart from a dead ball without waiting for the other team to take up defensive positions. They will also order quick goalline restarts, and penalise defenders for unreasonable delay. At the scrum, props on the feed side are now required to have their outside foot forward, so as to create a proper tunnel for the ball. Referees have been told to watch that players bind properly, the intention of both interpretive changes being to hold forwards in the scrum just that bit longer to allow the ball to clear to the backs.
Other than the interchange adjustment, the only other rule change is to allow a player to strip the ball from another who is in the act of scoring a try. But referees will this season be able to call on video refs for guidance in cases where there is doubt over whether a ball in play has been stripped or dropped. Read more NZ Herald

Top-four carrot for Rabbits By Brent Read - CREDIBILITY can be a transient quality in the NRL. Some clubs spend years trying to find it, only to lose it in an instant.
Others manage to hold onto it for years, surviving the many threats that can strip it away - the salary cap, off-field controversies and boardroom upheavals.
For South Sydney, the quest for credibility has been a journey lasting nearly two decades.
The most successful club in the game's history, the Rabbitohs have spent their recent past mired in mediocrity, the lowest point a two-year exile from the premiership. Thanks to Peter Holmes a Court and Russell Crowe, hope is finally at hand.
Last year, with the millionaire businessman and the Oscar-winning actor at the wheel, the Rabbitohs gained some credibility. Off the field, the former paupers are flying, evidenced by the announcement of a major sponsorship deal with the National Australia Bank yesterday.
Another significant sponsorship deal is just around the corner. After a $4million loss in 2007, money is flowing into the club's coffers. But for all the success off the field, Holmes a Court acknowledges credibility comes back to results on the field.
On that front, the "new" Souths made ground last year, reaching the finals for the first time since 1989.
The reward for that hard work was credibility for a club once regarded as the pride of the league.
Which brings us to tonight and the Rabbitohs' premiership opener against the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium. A new season brings with it new challenges. Rather than gaining credibility, Souths are attempting to retain it.
"It comes back to football, it always comes back to football," Holmes a Court said.
To that end, coach Jason Taylor has accepted responsibility and plans on changing his approach as a result.
Taylor is the first to acknowledge he over-coached last season. A deep thinker as a player, he carried that quality into his coaching. But Taylor admits at times he thought too much.
"I probably tried a bit hard to come up with stuff that was in the end a bit difficult for the guys," Taylor said. "I'm just learning. I have to develop my own philosophy as a coach and how you want to do things."
Taylor admits he faces a career-long battle to contain his urge to over-coach. A meeting last year with University of Michigan American football coach Lloyd Carr eased some concerns.
"We didn't get bogged down in technicalities," Taylor said.
"We just talked about the philosophy of how much you can get through to your players."
Taylor's goal for this year is the top four. It's been spoken about with the players, albeit without making it a firm target.
"I have mentioned it being where we hope to get to," Taylor said. "I think the players know that's where we need to be if we want to be in contention. We finished seventh last year, it's a natural progression."
Holmes a Court and Crowe have loftier ambitions. When you're used to being at the top, second place isn't anywhere near as seductive.
"I like Russell's attitude," Holmes a Court said. "He wants to win the comp every year." The Australian

COACHING NEWSLETTER
RLCM Coachtalk Extract from eBook 17
SPEED & AGILITY By Frank Ponissi - Written by Robert Rachow
The evolution of Rugby League throughout the latter part of the twentieth century was characterised by the rise and rise of the influence of mobility.
No longer were props the jurassic plodders of years gone by, while halves and backs found new ways to improve their already impressive footspeed. And so the trend continues into the next millennium.
Gaining, covering and defending ground have always been the focus points of Rugby League. However in the game's present climate, those tasks are being completed with unprecedented speed and agility.
This has been reflected in the specialised manner in which quickness - both off the mark and over a sustained period - is being instilled into athletes at the elite level.
We have seen many and varied programs for the dissection of strength and skill components, yet previously there was little variety available in the way of of speed training.
Repetitious sprints and endurance work were the flavour of a generation that has now passed its use-by-date.
Now there are a vast array of drills and activities, that when fully utilised, can deliver both individualised and entertaining mobility training.
Working towards the three desired components of speed, agility and quickness, segmented excercises have been developed to cater for the differing positional roles.
All workouts are calculated in relation to the work needs of that particular role within the team. For a forward, that usually mean short bursts of explosive power running.
For a half, the activities will usually relate to maintaining nimble and agile feet and for the outside backs, excercises tend to pertain to maximal velocity sprints.
As follows is a session designed to heighten the relevant qualities desired of each position within a Rugby League team.
This is not a definitive guide and many of the activities can transpose from one training group to the next.
But it does form an accurate guide to the areas in which coaches and conditioners should direct their focus for individualised programs.
(All sessions 7-10 minutes in length) PROPS/BACKROWERS
. Footwork Ladders - A series of plastic strips arranged on the ground somewhat similar to a ladder. The purpose of the activity is to step between each 'rung' with both feet as quickly as possible until reaching the end.
Variations on this activity include tippy-toeing sidewards through each 'rung' or stepping left through one 'rung' and right through the next continually.
Note, if a proper footwork ladder is not available, ropes or even sticks can be used.
. Medicine Ball Throws - With a variety of differently weighted medicine balls, form players into groups of two.
The first player throws the ball in the air underarm with both arms, while the second starts in a three-point crouch and sprints after the ball when it first bounces, aiming to reach it before it stops rolling.
Players are to alternate after each throw.
Variations available include throwing the ball from a squat or from an overhead position.
. Sled Weights - By stacking weights on a sled attached to the player by a rope and belt, we can emphasise the high leg pump and inclined stance expected of forwards in the ruck area.
Distances for the players to sprint with the weighted sled vary according to the mass involved.
One example of a testing set would be 10 metres with an 80 kilogram sled, follwed by 20m (60kg), then 30m (40kg) and finishing with 40m (20kg).
