News Update
Titans make pact to get aggressive By Luke Turgeon - Titans hardman Luke 'Bull' Bailey has warned North Queensland enforcer Carl Webb to expect a dose of his own medicine, with the bulked-up Gold Coast forwards primed for an aggro explosion in 2008.
Disappointed with the lack of mongrel shown in their debut season, the Titans playing group has made a pact to up the ante in the aggression stakes as they work towards becoming one of the most feared packs in the NRL.
Bailey said the Titans would put the pre-season talk into practice when they collide with the Cowboys in what is shaping as an explosive round one clash at Skilled Park on Friday.
"I don't think we were feared by many sides so that is something we want to work on," said Titans co-captain Bailey. "We are looking to lift our focus in the aggression field, we have talked about that a fair bit in the trials.
"I think it is going to be a physical game and we are going to go out there and try and prove Robina is our new fortress and what better way than to start it then with a physical encounter.
"Hopefully we come off after 80 minutes proud of our effort but also proud of our aggression."
Queensland Origin powderkeg Webb declared earlier in the week the Cowboys would be out to dominate the Titans on home turf and spoil their Robina debut.
Although they are now mates, the fierce rivalry between Bailey and Webb stretches back to their infamous State of Origin stoush in 2005.
It has developed into one of the greatest rivalries in today's game and fireworks are expected every time they step on to the paddock wearing different jumpers.
"We are prepared and we have been training hard," said NSW prop Bailey.
"Their forwards are probably just taking more responsibility knowing that (Johnathan) Thurston is out injured. Their game plan is probably going to change a little, probably to more of a bash and barge game with their big fellas."
Titans coach John Cartwright yesterday named man mountain Aaron Cannings and fiery young forwards Daniel Conn and Josh Graham on the bench for the Cowboys encounter.
Bailey will be bolstered in the front row by experienced prop Michael Hodgson and backed up by Anthony Laffranchi, Mark Minichiello and Ashley Harrison.
"In sitting down and analysing our year last year, the players themselves thought they weren't aggressive enough," said Cartwright.
"They have got a tough pack of forwards in Webb, (Luke) O'Donnell and (Steve) Southern, all good hitters. You run into those guys and they hurt you.
"If we want to test how aggressive we are it is probably as good an opportunity as you are going to get."
With the Cowboys' Test and Queensland halfback Thurston still recovering from surgery to both shoulders during the pre-season, betting agency TAB Sportsbet yesterday rated the Gold Coast $1.65 favourites to topple North Queensland ($2.20), who finished third last season.
"You take the best player in the world out of any side and it is going to be an advantage," said Cartwright. "But they are a star-studded side. They have replaced Thurston with Travis Burns, who is probably one of the best young halves in the game so they don't miss too much."
The Cowboys are second favourites to win the premiership ($9) while the Titans are second last ($41). Read more GC Bulletin

Sheens predicting stop-start to season By Jacquelin Magnay - At some point in all of the opening games of the NRL premiership this weekend, the teams will come to a shuddering halt. That is the stark prediction of Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens, who reckons the combination of intensity of performance, hot conditions and reduced interchange will all combine for a second-half collapse.
This season the rules have been changed to allow only a 10-man interchange (instead of 12), a move designed to create more opportunities later in the game for the little men. But teams have been using unlimited interchanges during the trials and will face their first restrictions in replacing tiring players from this Friday night's Roosters-Rabbitohs blockbuster opener.
Wests Tigers play St George Illawarra at 3pm on Sunday at the Sydney Football Stadium, after the original ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground became unavailable because of cricket commitments.
"The SFS will not be as bad as the middle of the Sydney Cricket Ground, because the SFS is shaded by the grandstand later in the day," said Sheens. "It will be hot and with the increased intensity of the season finally starting and the 10-man interchange . all of a sudden the teams will come to a shuddering halt."
The Brisbane-Penrith match will be played at 1pm Queensland time on Sunday with the Broncos electing to wear their lighter away strip to minimise the heat's impact. The Panthers will be forced to wear their dark strip.

Lebanon could make World Cup - LEBANON will earn a World Cup reprieve if Fiji is prevented from competing in the tournament because of Federal government sanctions. RLWC operations manager Tas Baiteri said organisers are closely monitoring what action the Rudd Government will take in response to the recent political drama that has beseiged the Pacific island nation.
There are real fears that sanctions will be installed to prevent Fijian teams from competing on Australian soil.
The uncertainty yesterday prompted Fijian National Rugby League chairman Peni Musunamasi to write to the Australian High Commission in Suva for clarification.
Baiteri confirmed sanctions appeared to be a possibility, and that Lebanon were next in line. "The free spot would go to the next highest ranked team, and that's Lebanon because they lost the final qualifier to Samoa,'' Baiteri said.Read more Daily Telegraph

NSWRL Season Launch - The NSW Rugby League today launched its two major competitions for Rugby League's Centenary year which will both be covered in a new television show on Fox Sports. From May this season Fox Sports will broadcast a NSWRL program which features a match of the day and comprehensive highlights, statitistcs and previews from the VB NSW Cup and Jim Beam Cup.
NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said the program, which will air each Wednesday at 5pm, would showcase the strengthening standard of the NSWRL's two major competitions.
"It's certainly exciting for us and it could not have come at a better time considering we have a number of new teams entering both competitions this year," Carr said.
"It's also very exciting for the teams that are participating because it will obviously give some assistance to them in attracting sponsors."
The VB NSW Cup is set to showcase top-tier Rugby League to suburban venues throughout the year, with several NRL clubs set to use the competition as a vehicle to play their top-25 squad players who are over the age of 20.
Newtown Jets coach Greg Matterson said the VB NSW Cup's schedule - which runs separately to the NRL - would benefit his players' first-grade aspirations as NRL coaches would now have more time to view their performances.
"At the moment the Roosters' first five or six games are on Friday night and we are on Saturday, so supporters can go and watch both games," Matterson said.
"And the coaching staff can relax and watch either game - so I can watch first grade or Brad Fittler can come and watch the NSW Cup. They can actually take the time to watch [VB NSW Cup] players instead of being busy preparing the first-grade side."
Matterson said the VB NSW Cup would also give fans a chance to see first-grade stars in action on a weekly basis, starting from Round One this weekend.
"This week I've got [Roosters first-graders] Sam Perrett and Mitch Aubusson coming back to VB NSW Cup - one's an international and one is a first-grader," Matterson said.
"I talked to them both last night and their heads are right around getting stuck into the VB NSW Cup. All the players know they need to be playing consistent football at this level to make it in first-grade."
The Jim Beam Cup, which this year welcomes new teams the Western Australian Reds, Southern Sydney Sharks and Campbelltown Eagles, will again feature its successful salary-cap and points-based structure.
A Jim Beam Cup representative side will contest the annual Quad Series tournament, which will also feature the NSW Country side, the QLD Rangers and for the first time, the Great Britain Community Lions.
Southern Sydney Sharks' Ian Baddock said the Jim Beam Cup's progressive nature and salary-cap encouraged clubs to focus on developing their junior talent.
"I think that in Jim Beam Cup, it's at an age where the players are just hungry to go forward," Baddock said.
"I think it is the ideal grade for players which might not be right up to first-grade standard but aren't too far away either, and that need to build their games.
"It's very, very exciting for us to be involved in the competition and we're looking forward to a great season." NSWRL OnlineRead more BARLA

Recruitment By Cyril Connell - Brisbane Broncos RLFC
Written by Ashley Bradnam
Sailor, Lockyer, Webcke, Thorn, Renouf.....the list goes on and on.
Apart from being team-mates in arguably the greatest club side in world football, these players have something else in common.
They are all proteges of a highly effective recruitment campaign which has seen the Brisbane Broncos preserve their status as a football superpower.
The man in charge of recruitment at the Broncos is Cyril Connell.
Connell has done pretty much everything the game can offer. As a 5/8th and half back he played 24 games for Queensland, 7 of them as Captain. He was selected for a Kangaroo Tour of England and France, playing 14 games, three as Captain.
He was then chosen to represent his country in 3 Tests withdrawing from one because of injury. He spent 30 years behind the microphone as a radio and television commentator. In short, he knows the game well.
These days most people recognise Connell as one of the finest talent identifiers in the business.
Ashley Bradnam caught up with him recently to find out how he operates.
I guess firstly we want to make sure the boys we recruit can play football. But just as importantly, we need to know the make up of the boy's character.
It's pretty hard to put that into words. It's not just talent that makes a player. His discipline, dedication and determination are just as important. Wayne and I call it the 'X' factor, the unknown.
Identifying ability is actually the easiest part. A good player's balance, the way he runs...It just stands out. But we've had a number of fellows with talent come through here, who have just never made it. They never had the other qualities.
You don't. You can only find out all you can about the boy and then make a judgement call. As an exheadmaster, I find it good to talk to his principal.
He'll tell me what he's like at school and give me an idea of his character. You also talk to his parents and coaches, but you never really know. I remember this one boy who we thought was going to be a star, for his age I have no doubt he was the best player in Australia. He was good, but for whatever reason he never shaped up. You can't tell.
We have scouts around the place who will tell us about a boy. People also ring up who aren't scouts, sometimes a boy's parents will call. We take notice of all of those calls. It's then up to us to get out there and watch him play. When we watch a kid play we don't necessarily look for the star. In schoolboy football, the flashy player is not always the best player. We endeavour to recruit boys who we believe have the potential to play First grade, so I guess your looking for potential.
If we find a boy who's playing well, the first step is to write to his parents and set up a time to talk we don't sign them, nobody signs with the Broncos at schoolboy .......from RLCM eBook 13 - Click here to purchase your RLCM eBook you will be reading it today.
