News Update

Smith dumped to park footy
By James Phelps - PARRAMATTA coach Michael Hagan is poised to drop a selection bombshell tomorrow by dumping star playmaker Tim Smith to park football.

A week after dropping Jarryd Hayne in the wake of a 4am shooting at Kings Cross, Hagan last night told The Daily Telegraph that his star No. 7 will play with Wentworthville on Saturday if passed fit.

The move has come about because of a shoulder injury, but the humbling experience could also serve to remind Smith of the consequences of more bad behaviour.

While his teammates take on the Bulldogs at an ANZ Stadium blockbuster, Smith will play at an empty Brookvale Oval.

"I can assure you that Tim Smith might have a game or two there before he comes back in," Hagan said. "I am thinking that's what we will do.

"It's more for his confidence than anything else with his shoulder.

"We need to make sure he is right. He will need to get his timing back."

The former NRL rookie of the year returned to contact training for the first time last week after undergoing a complete shoulder reconstruction.

Smith spent time at a Gold Coast rehabilitation clinic this year after being suspended for a series of alcohol-related incidents.

The troubled 23-year-old was expected to be rushed straight back into the NRL team but Hagan will tomorrow name Brett Finch and Feleti Mateo in the halves.

With Premier League scrapped this year, the Eels will send players who don't make first grade to Wentworthville.

"We have a dozen quality players turning out for Wentworthville," Hagan said.

"It is basically a reserve-grade competition. We have appointed the coach (Rip Taylor) and we have about 12 contracted players there."

Hagan admitted Smith could be targeted by part-time footballers looking for a big-name scalp.

"They come under the same guidelines as the NRL as far as refereeing goes," Hagan said.

"There is some element of risk though."

Junior Paulo, Weller Hauraki and Hayne will not play at all this weekend, Hagan taking a hard line after the trio were shot at while out on a boozy night in Kings Cross.

With Hayne already missing, fans might question Hagan's gamble on Smith, but for a club that has been branded the worst-behaved in the NRL it could play dividends.

While Smith has not been dropped for disciplinary reasons, it will not only give his shoulder a chance to recover but also serve as a warning of what lies ahead should he step out of line again.

"It won't do him any harm," Eels legend Brett Kenny said.

"Things like this have to happen with the way things have gone at the club in the past."

Kenny applauded Hagan's tough stance on the trio involved in the Kings Cross incident.

"Maybe they have finally woken up," Kenny said.

"Maybe they should have done it earlier but better late then never."

HALIFAX HOME INSURANCE - NATIONAL YOUTH LEAGUE RESULTS Sunday 9th March 2008

East Leeds 60-20 Featherstone Lions
Keighley Cougar Cubs 84-2 Gateshead Thunder
Leigh East 52-0 Waterhead
Rylands 18-0 Kells
Saddleworth Rangers 24-16 Leigh Miners Rangers

Pride of place goes to SADDLEWORTH RANGERS who became the first side to beat LEIGH MINERS RANGERS this season after the visitors had gone 18 matches undefeated.

Saddleworth took an early lead when stand off Ethan Langhorn danced his way past three defenders to cross in the corner and, soon after, Stephen Nieled dummied his way over, Langhorn converting to make it 10-0.

Jonathan Dobbs capitalised on more home dominance when he crossed out wide but Adam Owens cut the deficit when following a fine grubber, Tom Bradbury's goal making it 14-6 at the break. A fine flowing move got Miners further in to the contest with Martin Grey on the end of it, Bradbury again adding the extras.

Tom Dransfield's scoot edged Saddleworth further in front to stop the Leigh resurgence but Grey's second touchdown again made it a four point margin. In the robust closing exchanges, Longhorn added to penalties to secure a notable win.

In Saturday's match, KEIGHLEY COUGAR CUBS were totally dominant against GATESHEAD THUNDER in a match that was memorable for winger Andrew Maguire scoring seven of his side's 17 tries.

He posted a hat trick within the first 20 minutes and the Cubs never looked back. Gateshead were game opposition and dominated the early exchanges but had only a 7th minute penalty from Scott Woods to show for their efforts.

Cougars scored at regular intervals from then on, with a hat trick from Ben Sagar and one each to Kris Gott, James Haythornthwaite - who also kicked five goals, Anthony Kennedy, Joe Copperwaite, Danny Snowden and debutants Sam Walker and Callum Hudson, who also kicked three conversions.

Nathan Goodman with two touchdowns and Steve Sunderland, who bagged a fine hat trick, were the stars in EAST LEEDS' big home win over FEATHERSTONE LIONS.

Andy Clare gave the visitors the lead but Langton and Tomlinson replied for Easts. Lions made it 12-10 with a try by Curtis but Carlton Wray, who was excellent throughout, edged Leeds further ahead. Four of the host's 11 tries came at the start of the second half and that proved to be the decisive factor. RFL

Now it's down to business for the Newtown Jets. - The Newtown Jets completed their 2008 trial matches program with a 40-24 win over the Newcastle club team Central-Charlestown at OKI Jubilee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The powerhouse Sydney Roosters and New Zealand international centre Iosia Soliola made his playing comeback from a bad knee injury in 2007, and proved in his brief hit-out with the Newtown Jets on Saturday that he is indeed ready to return to the NRL ranks.

Newtown enters its own centenary Rugby League season and the inaugural season of the NSW Cup competition (the NRL reserve grade in NSW) with cautious optimism, after recording four consecutive wins in the trials program.

Coach Greg Matterson has the enviable problem of narrowing an in-form squad of nearly thirty players down to the seventeen men required for next weekend.

The Jets opening competition match is against Cronulla-Sutherland next Saturday (15th March) at the OKI Jubilee Stadium (Kogarah) with the game timed to start at 4.30pm. Newtown Jets online

MORE EURO DATES ANNOUNCED - Delegates from eight nations attended the 'Rugby League European Federation Official Observers' meeting on Saturday afternoon at the Stoop, prior to Harlequins' Super League clash with Huddersfield.

Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Morocco and Malta were present, with apologies received from Greece

A meeting was also held with representatives from the fledgling Hungarian RL although that was not part of the official business.

Among a host of discussions concerning on-going development initiatives, dates were agreed for two three-cornered international tournaments; a Euro Shield between Italy, Germany and Czech Republic and a Euro Bowl featuring Estonia, Latvia and Ukraine.

Euro Shield -

June 12th
- Italy v Germany - Padua
July 12th - Czech Republic v Italy - Prague
August 2nd - Germany v Czech Republic - Karlsruhe

Euro Bowl -

June 28th
- Estonia v Latvia - Tallinn
July 26th - Ukraine v Estonia - Kharkiv
August 2nd - Latvia v Ukraine - Riga

Further discussions were undertaken regarding the European Nations Under 18's tournament set for Prague for the first time, in early September, which will feature either six or eight nations.

Rugby League European Federation Executive & Development Officer Kevin Rudd, who chaired the meeting, commented, "There is a tremendous amount of courage being shown by people starting and developing organisations and making commitments to spread the sport throughout Europe."

"In many cases, not only the code but regulations in their own countries are unfamiliar and need dedicated time and patience for their hopes and plans to come to fruition. It is not easy but they are making the necessary hard yards." RLEF

RUSSIANS LOOK FOR CLOSER LINKS - For the second time in three seasons, Wales take on Russia at club level in the Carnegie Challenge Cup on the road to Wembley, as Celtic Crusaders host Lokomotiv Moscow, in the third round on Sunday.

Lokomotiv are a dominant force in their league, winning seven Championships, including league and cup doubles from 2002-2007. Last season they had a 100% record in all domestic competitions as they again did the double.

They built up for their trip to the Brewery Field, Bridgend at a training camp in Cyprus to prepare for the cup tie, which will be their first game of the season. Twelve players from the club were in the Russian national team in last year's World Cup qualifiers.

Lokomotiv will be hoping to fare better than Russian runners-up Vereya, who were handsomely beaten 64-12 at the hands of Leigh Miners Rangers a fortnight ago in the previous round.

Vereya had planned to stay on after that match to fulfil a friendly fixture against a Wakefield and District amateur select but due to complications out of their control and the Russian Federation, the club could not extend their visas to stay in the UK.

Roger Fagge from their intended Yorkshire hosts commented, "It is a shame, we were really looking forward to meeting and entertaining them and to start a relationship with a Russian club."

"We still hope that is something we can establish in the future and fully understand that, in this situation, the Russians had done all they could."

Rugby League European Federation Executive & Development Officer Kevin Rudd added, "A full review of the International protocol for touring teams will take place in the light of this particular incident."

"Thankfully these situations are very rare now and we will continue to try and prevent them in the future. Part of my role is to try and develop a sensible system for touring between countries and, as demand increases, with more destinations available for RL teams of all age groups, we will have to further develop our systems and procedures to co-ordinate such activities."

"In the first instance, though, any team thinking of touring should contact their national governing body for approval and to investigate feasibility options and gain their sanction before committing to travel overseas or to receiving an incoming team." RLEF

Junior Ravens training starts with a bang - The youth section of the Kent Ravens Rugby League Club, the Junior Ravens, kick-started their preparations for the new season with their first training session on the 5th March.

The session was a huge success and the youth players that had played for the Junior Ravens in previous seasons were very happy to get their rugby league boots back on, and the players new to the club and the sport also enjoyed the chance to play the game for the first time.

One of the squad's members from last year, U13s Half Back Mylie Jones, summed up the feeling after the session perfectly, `It was good to get back to playing rugby league again.'

The Junior Ravens training sessions are split into two sections. The minis, who are from the ages of 7-11, start training at 7pm, and the Juniors, who are from the ages of 12-16 start at 7.30pm. Training sessions take place every Wednesday at the Leigh Academy on Green Street Green Road in Dartford.

The Junior Ravens are going to be playing in curtain raiser games for the men's squad in the new season so there is the chance for the Junior Ravens' teams to play at the very impressive Princes Park Stadium in Dartford! Kent Ravens Online

Wakefield 22-20 Hull KR -Ryan Atkins bagged two tries and Danny Brough kicked 10 points as Wakefield held on for victory over Hull KR.

Atkins scored his first try from Oliver Wilkes's superb one-handed pass but Scott Murrell replied for Rovers after good approach work by Daniel Fitzhenry.

Brough's kicking set up a penalty try before Mick Vella followed up his own kick to score for the visitors.

Jake Webster's fifth try of the season put Rovers ahead, only for Brough to set up Atkins to score the late winner.

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan, "I thought it was a very average game of rugby league. It was very scrappy and I don't think either side played anywhere near what they can.

"For us it was a brainless display at times and we had ample opportunity to put the game away and win the game but chose try move away from what we were doing well.

"We had ample opportunity to score points, plenty of points, but we were poor in our last play options in the first half and weren't asking enough questions.

"We didn't use out intelligence as well as we should have."

Wakefield boss John Kear, "We have been criticised for some of our defensive work and we asked for the best defensive performance of the season.

"I thought the first half was controlled defence and I thought the second was just blood, guts and determination and character defence.

"But I didn't mean for them to lose the ball, throw silly passes and lose possession in their own 30 to have the best defence, so all credit to them.

"We worked hard and they have ground out a win, a win for character and determination more than anything else."

Can Aidan Kirk show true enterprise for NZ Warriors? By Hugh McGahan - With so much happening in the off season, from the resignation of the NZRL chairman and Kiwi coach and the associated fallout, to the appointment of Stephen Kearney and the saga of Wayne Bennett, it's been very busy.

But the most influential incident prior to the start of the new NRL season has been the injury sustained by Wade McKinnon. Who will fill his shoes?

There has been talk of Aidan Kirk slotting into fullback for the opening game of the season; now I admit I do not know a great deal about Kirk but are we looking at a player who can play a similar game or one who is going to be a bread and butter player?

The Warriors need to have a player similar to McKinnon, given he was a major reason why the team performed so well in 2007. He possessed the ability to break the defensive line consistently from both set and broken play and that is not easy to find in a player.

Everyone thought that there would not be a replacement for Brent Webb, but he was quickly forgotten when McKinnon stamped his mark.

My fear is that the 2008 Warriors will expect their fullback to enact 2007 plays to give them early metres, setting a platform within 60m of the opposition line as opposed to restarting 80m out. Last year the team relied heavily on McKinnon with his exceptional vision for holes in the defensive line.

However, my view is that Kirk will struggle under expectations the fans may place on him and the team and my opinion is that Ivan Cleary should look for an unknown who has a lack of fear as his main attribute.

Aidan Kirk may prove me wrong, and I hope he does, but a high-risk performer may give better returns than a solid, safety-first player. Bread and butter might pay the bills, but will it pay real dividends?

Choosing a MENTOR

By Peter Corcoran OAM - ARLD

Written by Robert Rachow

RLCM eBook 17 Buy it today - Read it today, click
here

Mark Graham had one, Brian Smith was one and David Waite still idolises his. What are we talking about?

The answer is of course, a coaching mentor. Just as important as it is for players to have access to a knowledgeable coach, it is absolutely vital that a coach maintain contact with a responsible and respectable role model.

This person comes in the form of a mentor.

While most players, particularly at the junior level, have coaches bestowed upon them, a mentor is frequently chosen of the coach's own volition.

Having helped hundreds of coaches settle upon a suitable mentor, ARLD's Peter Corcoran OAM says the key is in finding someone with credibility that you can aspire to emulate.

He also places a great value on the concept that both entities in the arrangement should emerge enlightened, not only the apprentice.

"It should be very much a two-way relationship," urges Corcoran.

"Coaches should choose a mentor who can bring out the best in them, but at the same time choose someone who might benefit from their ideas. That is not to say you should go in there and tell your mentor what's right and what's wrong. It should be a by-product of a harmonious and educational relationship."

"Conversely, if a mentor thinks they know it all, then they won't be of much use. Their role is to provide guidance and advice when stimulated - not simply give you all their ideas."

Corcoran emphasises that far too many coaches look at their mentor as an assessor rather than a source of inspiration. In all, he believes the three most important qualities a mentor should offer his student are those of an observer, a role model and an advisor.

A mentor should act as a sounding board to throw ideas and discuss, rather than an uninvolved bystander who merely ticks and crosses a sheet.

"At the very start of your decision as to who will be your mentor you should ask 'What sort of person am I looking for?'", Corcoran says.

"I would suggest it is somebody with the ability to lift your goals, evaluate you and provide positives brainstorms. They should help you achieve and be prepared to replicate what they teach, rather than just talking about it.

"Most coaches know from when they were players that people who say they are going to do one thing and end up doing another are not worth worrying about.

"Even if you forgive them on the outside, subconciously you will note the inconsistencies and gradually that will lead to a lack of credibility on their behalf. Once you doubt their credibility, you don't accept their ideas so easily and you begin to question any prior information they exposed to you."

To avoid a dilemma such as this, it is imperative therefore that a coach settles on a mentor who is suitable both in terms of football knowledge and character traits.

Every coach has an area of expertise or a particular forte, but by mismatching this with conflicting views from a mentor, the benefits will be negated.

This applies to personality, where an extravert mentor may cloud the communication skills of a quiet thinking coach and a quiet-thinking mentor may stifle the motivational brilliance of an extraverted coach.

Even when the traits of the mentor and coach are in symbiosis, it is valuable that the mentor does not stunt........from RLCM eBook 17 - Click
