Cowboys' hankering for Henry stirs Raiders
by Glenn Jackson - Canberra will move swiftly to attempt to re-sign their coach Neil Henry in the face of significant interest from North Queensland.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner admitted negotiations to extend Henry's deal - which expires at the end of 2009 - would be brought forward due to the interest which follows the Cowboys' decision not to re-sign their coach, Graham Murray.

The Cowboys are understood to have shaved their shortlist to three - Broncos coach Wayne Bennett, North Queensland assistant Ian Millward and Henry.

However, Henry, who was Murray's assistant at the Cowboys before he joined Canberra, is believed to have moved to the head of the queue.

"There's been a bit of interest in him, and that tells us we've picked the right bloke," Furner said. "Last year, it was Neil who?"

Although he is off contract at the end of next year, Henry has an option in his favour for 2010. But with the interest from other clubs he can re-negotiate on his terms.

Henry, the Queensland State of Origin assistant last year, is one of the most highly-rated coaches in the game, however his contractual obligations might be the biggest obstacle in front of a return to the Cowboys.

It is understood the Cowboys want Henry for 2009 or not at all, meaning he would have to break his contract in order to move. Furner said the Raiders had planned to begin negotiations with Henry midway through the season but officials will now start them within weeks.

"It doesn't really change what we were thinking anyway," Furner said. "It's just confirmed our thinking, which is good. The positive thing is he's getting recognition. The interest is good. It means we made the right choice."

The coaching merry-go-round of 2006 is set to be repeated this season, with a number of coaches off contract and under pressure. Murray and Bennett are already on the market, joining St Helens' Daniel Anderson, who wants to return to the NRL.

Under-pressure Dragons coach Nathan Brown and the Bulldogs' Steve Folkes have both been given about two months before their respective boards decide their fates.

The coaching puzzle might be even more complicated than 2006 with English Super League clubs to possibly play a big part in the Australian market.

Wigan's Brian Noble and Hull FC's Peter Sharp are all free agents at the end of their season and are no guarantees to continue at their clubs. Anderson has been mentioned as part of a possible swap with the Folkes. However, Folkes also played with Hull FC.

Mick Potter is considered favourite for the St Helens position, but that would still leave a position open at his club, Catalans Dragons. St Helens had considered Bennett, the departing Brisbane coach, but the club is believed to have gone cold on him.

Meanwhile, the cashed-up Bulldogs are believed to be showing significant interest in St George Illawarra's promising backline star Josh Morris.

Morris's manager David Riolo has started talks with the Dragons about re-signing with the club, however the Bulldogs have joined the Gold Coast and the Roosters in the hunt for him.

The Bulldogs' interest comes with centre Willie Tonga expected to head elsewhere at the end of the season, with North Queensland firming to snare the former Queensland representative. Despite interest from England, Tonga is unlikely to leave the NRL.

Jarryd Hayne's manager, Wayne Beavis, will meet Parramatta officials today for the first time since his star client was involved in a shooting drama at Kings Cross.

Beavis has been in Queensland this week, however he returned yesterday and will meet Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald and football manager Andrew Hill. The Eels, as expected, stood down Hayne as well as Weller Hauraki and Junior Paulo from their round-one clash with the Bulldogs.

The club fined the trio $2000 each, and will give all three trauma counselling and offer them alcohol counselling in the aftermath to the Monday morning drama.

NRL chief executives discussed the recent spate of alcohol-related incidents involving their players at yesterday's CEOs conference, although it was reiterated that punishments were to be dealt out by the club's and not the game's governing body.

The NRL will hold a strategic plan forum in May to continue their fight to keep the clubs financially viable in the wake of smoking bans and poker machine taxes.

The clubs have formed a taskforce with the ARL and the NSWRL Academy to strengthen rugby league in western Sydney against the AFL's push into the area. Read more

Truck, son Coasting into the history books By Luke Turgeon - Former Giants and Seagulls hardman Robert `Truck' Simpkins and his son Ryan will create a slice of Gold Coast rugby league history next week.

When Titans Toyota Cup captain Ryan leads his side out at Skilled Park against the Cowboys on Friday, they will become the first father and son to represent the Gold Coast in a National Rugby League competition.

"It brings back a few memories because when we played at Seagulls it was the same sort of thing," said Simpkins Sr.

"We were the first blokes to run out down there.

"To play his first game in the under-20s at the new stadium is a big effort. To run out, let alone be captain for the first game, I am very proud."

An uncompromising lock, Simpkins Sr joined the Giants in their debut season in 1988 -- the same year Ryan was born -- and went on to play for the Seagulls until 1991, racking up 72 games for the Gold Coast.

Following in his father's footsteps Ryan, also a workaholic back rower, is already gaining a reputation for himself as a player that is prepared to do the tough stuff.

"I was never the best player and I am still not," said born and bred Gold Coaster Ryan.

"I try to do all the little things, the stuff no one else wants to do I suppose.

"I try to have a high work rate. I knew Murph (Toyota Cup coach Steve Murphy) had a few people in mind for captain and there are plenty of good players in the side.

"So it was a pretty good moment when he said I was captain."

Former Palm Beach-Currumbin student Ryan played all his junior footy at Currumbin-Tugun before moving to Tweed, where he was a key member of their premiership-winning colts team last season.

Ryan, a regular visitor to the Seagulls dressing sheds as a toddler, said he could not really remember his father's golden days.

"I have seen a few old tapes and stuff," said the 19-year-old. "He lets me go my own way."

Simpkins Sr watched on at the weekend as Ryan played the full 80 minutes in the Titans under-20s' final pre-season trial against the Tigers, which doubled as their Skilled Park dress rehearsal heading into round one.

He joked there was no reason to pass on playing tips to his son.

"He doesn't listen anyway," he said. "He plays his own game." Read more

Warriors' mentor Ivan Cleary - A safe pair of hands By Peter Jessup - The old adage that there are two types of coaches - the ones who have just been sacked and those who are about to be - does not apply to the Warriors' mentor Ivan Cleary this season and is unlikely to anytime soon.

The coach can feel secure in his job not just because the club last month extended his term by another year through to the end of 2010, but also because Cleary would have to stuff up monumentally to undo the good he's brought to the Warriors since the days of the club's salary cap woes.

Last year was their first finals appearance since 2003. They won more games than they lost for the first time since 2003. The crowd average doubled, to 13,225.

In his third year in charge, 37-year-old Cleary is set to become the club's longest-serving coach, eclipsing Daniel Anderson's three-and-a-half seasons.

He's popular with the club management because he's practical, a thinker who can see the bigger picture in sponsors, fans, media and the wider game. He's popular with the players because he's cool and collected, he delivers ideas and Lo! They work.

That was never better proved than when the side needed revitalising after slumping to six straight losses in mid-2007. It was a painful run, culminating in a Round 13 2-4 defeat to a depleted Melbourne Storm.

It poured down that night. The Warriors bombed chances, the crowd went home early. It appeared their race was run, and already lost.

Then they won three on the trot, starting with the Sharks in Cronulla. A loss in Townsville, then three more wins on the trot. They had to take three wins from their last five games to make the playoffs and did that, plus turned in the most entertaining game of the year, 31-all with the Roosters after double overtime.

Cleary rates that turnaround "the biggest thing we did last year. Six losses at the halfway mark - there was every chance of it turning to custard at that stage."

If they fall into a similar hole again, they have the knowledge of how to get out and the belief in their ability to do it, he said.

For the first time in several seasons, the Warriors start with continuity within the squad, just four players out and three in, and stability in management. That gives him great confidence, Cleary said.

When he came into the top job, Cleary inherited Tony Kemp's under-performing squad and the salary-cap problems created by former management, which has hamstrung the recruitment programme and the shape of the team right through to this year.

His big off-season buy was Broncos' centre Brent Tate - a purchase inspired by Tate's work on and off the field, his presence and his work ethic. And he's "right up there" as contender for fastest man at the club, racing wing Michael Crockett and Manu Vatuvei.

They start with just fullback Wade McKinnon out of the picture due to injury. It's a big "just". But this time last year people were asking "who's Wade McKinnon and how come they let Brent Webb go?". If anyone can pick another top fullback it's former fullback Cleary, who earmarked McKinnon's back-up Aidan Kirk as an up-and-comer last year.

Kirk seems in the same mould as Cleary - not the fastest nor the flashiest fullback around but safe, solid. Cleary had a great vision for getting to the right place at the right time - he will want to impart this to Kirk.

The Warriors have the hardest start of any team - champions Melbourne away in week one, beaten semifinalists the Eels at home in week two, grandfinalists Manly away in week three.

He admits he is still mulling over the effect of the reduction from 12 to 10 interchanges and how to rotate the bench. "There's still a lot of question marks to it ... I'm still tossing up ideas and waiting to see how the first few rounds go."

Injuries will be a key - before there were stages in games where he kept players back, he said, and that may not now be possible.

There are a raft of players in the 50-100 games bracket now, a handful about to burst the 100-game barrier, where coaching great Wayne Bennett says they finally become useful. They have the great leadership and ground-gain of Steve Price, Ruben Wiki's marshalling and Michael Witt's 92 per cent kicking record. And don't forget Brent Tate's gas.

"We took a lot of confidence out of last year," Cleary said, adding to the list of pluses.

No predictions, though. "There's not much between fourth and 10th."

Tenth would be a big let-down given all that promise and potential. But they'd have to do worse in order for their coach to get the heave. He's already lifted his average above 50/50 and only the best can do that and maintain it. Read more

A stroll down legend lane Cornell van der Heyden - A Veritable treasure trove of rugby league memorabilia opens to the public this Saturday at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.

A major part of the centenary of rugby league celebrations, League of Legends: 100 years of Rugby League in Australia explores the history of the game since its inception and will move around the country during the next 15 months.

The collection features hundreds of pieces, donated from the game's administrative bodies, leagues clubs as well as private collections, presented in a timeline walk-through. There's also a "locker room", where visitors can learn about changes in technology and hear from fans and those who've played and called the game.

Among the treasures on show is the Royal Agricultural Society Shield - the game's inaugural Premiership trophy - played for from 1908-1913.

The collection also includes New South Wales and Queensland's Winfield Cups (1982 - 1995), the JJ Giltinan Shield (1951 - present), Clive Churchill's Australia jumper (1948), Arthur Beetson's Queensland State of Origin jersey (1980) and the football used in a match between Australasia and Wakefield Trinity (1921).

Items such as the sideline bell and corner posts from Pratten Park (Western Suburbs Magpies former home), Laurie Nichols' (Balmain fanatic) singlet and a selection of player figurines will appeal to those with eclectic tastes. " It's a living memory to those great people who have been pioneers of our whole game." - Johnny Raper The Immortal is impressed with the collection of league treasures.

Three St George legends and Immortals of the Game, Reg Gasnier, Johnny Raper and Graeme Langlands, were on hand to help celebrate the opening of the exhibition. Raper, who played in eight grand final wins for St George during the club's 11 successive triumphs in the 1950s and 1960s, said it reminded him of just how much rugby league has changed over the years.

"There are shields from the around the time the game first came about in 1907, and seeing some of the photographs makes you realize how unfortunate the players were in those days, and the bad times they had to go through," Raper said.

"The jumpers they had to wear, the payments that they got. They had to go to work and work overtime and people don't understand that these days.

"The grounds were like concrete to tackle on and then you had to go home and throw your wife the muddy gear. It was all hard work back then, there's no doubt about that. I mean, we had it tough too, but the greats of the early era like Dally Messenger, those players had it very tough when they'd go off on a six month tour.

"I just admire those players so very, very much for making it easier for players like me. It was tough for players of my era when we went on tour - don't worry about that - but not as tough as what they went through.

"I remember the first game I played over there (on tour in England). We were out on the field and I said to (Reg) Gasnier - after all these Pommies came out who were all six- foot-two, 16 stone coal miners and that sort of thing - I said 'Gaz'. He said, 'what chook?' And I said 'I'd like to be home with Mum and Dad now.'"

These days 68-year-old Raper is still a very busy man. He's a consultant for a large building company based in Sydney, has a variety of media commitments and keeps himself in shape using a Pilates machine, which he says helps "mature" Australians reap the benefits of the exercise.

Not too busy, however, to impart some wisdom to the current-day stars of the game.

"We've got to remember that the media exposure that players get these days and the modern technology that's available to the press are not the same as we had," he said.

"Their life is no longer a private life but a public life. Just be careful where you're going because modern technology is going to expose you and you're going to come out not looking to good.

Pressed for a favourite League of Legends item, Raper said another Immortal was always foremost in his thoughts.

"I just love seeing Clive Churchill (a portrait from 1950). I was fortunate enough to play against him when I played for Newtown and he's always been one of my heroes. He will be there forever.

Still an ardent follower of the Dragons, Raper admitted he had mixed emotions during this year's Charity Shield.

"I just loved the Charity Shield the other night. I've got a special thing with the Bunnies because of Churchill too, and I think both them and the Dragons will do all right this year.

Easy to Train Strength Exercises With Alex Corvo - A Coaching Extract from RLCM Book 9. Click

.....strength and other related components of fitness such as speed and speed/strength (power) are essential requirements for all Rugby League players.

While it is agreed that players should possess a high level of skill, the player's performance of these skills will be influenced to a degree by the level he has attained in those important physical fitness requirements of the game.

For various reasons, players may find it difficult to access a well equipped gymnasium and hence may believe it not possible to make the fitness gains required in the relevant areas.

Each strength training session should commence with an adequate warm up. The warm up should consist of 5-8 minutes of aerobic activity, predominantly working the large muscle groups.

Activities such as jogging and cycling are recommended.

Once core temperature has been increased (normally determined by the onset of a light sweat) a stretching routine should follow. These stretches should target the muscle groups that are to be trained during that particular session.

Safety Considerations

. Ensure adequate time is taken to learn the correct movement patterns for each lift.
. Always train under the supervision of a qualified strength coach.
. Train with a partner. This person can assist with spotting (if necessary) and in ensuring good technique is used while exercising.
. The risk of injury is greatly reduced when exercises are performed in the proper manner.
. Correct breathing is important. players should never hold their breath while performing any strength exercises such as those outlined in this article.
. Never increase the weight or resistance in an exercise to sacrifice good lifting technique. When a players' lifting technique begins to deteriorate the set should be stopped immediately.

Muscles Worked
. Quadriceps, hamstrings, gluetus maximus (buttocks), erector spinae (lower back), gastrocnemius (calf), soleus (calf) and abdominals

Method of Execution
. bar resting across shoulders
. feet should be placed 1 running stride length apart, in line with shoulders
. eyes focused on a point on the wall. Slightly higher than eye height
. the descent commences with the hips flexed forward, front foot flat on ground and back foot on toes
. start the decent by bending the front leg so that the knee moves over the line of toes. At the same time the back knee is moved towards the ground. The back knee bends slightly during the movement
. the descent is completed as the back knee contacts the ground lightly. This position is held for a brief second prior to commencing the return to the starting position.
. the ascent commences with a smooth, controlled movement.....
