Sports Psychology.
With Wendy Swift written by Hanna McCathy
...in short, the challenge or activity the athlete is participating in must be in line with the athlete's own ability and the training they have been doing to prepare for the event.
If the athlete feels they have reached a stage where they feel they are completely in control, then they can become immersed in their performance.
If they allow themselves to start thinking about their performance while competing, then they cannot achieve within the flow state.
For example, if they start thinking in such a way that they convince themselves their coach will be disappointed if they lose or even if they become angry with themselves with their lack of preparation, they cannot be immersed in the activity.
The same pattern occurs when the athlete knows a significant person in their life is not going to be happy if they're not at their best.
The athlete cannot achieve a level of positive exhilaration at competing if they are distracted from what they are doing.
If they are comfortable with their performance and training, however, they look forward to competing and can attain the state of total immersion.
As a result, they have a great time performing and they access the best of their training, which ultimately leads to success.
It's essential that the athlete must only be aware of the now, no past, only the future. If they detached from the process, then their results will demonstrate this.
"Obviously, if they're not thinking about the outcome, they're not in the moment."
Swift explains, "If we [as psychologists, coaches etc.] keep those concepts in mind, it's likely we can guide our kids [or elite athletes] to be in the best state for that particular performance...... 2008 RLCM Coaching Yearbook and CD-ROM - distributed to RLCM Paid Subscribers - Written by Hanna McCarthy

Peter Sharp looks for emergency loanee - Hull FC coach Peter Sharp is looking to bolster up his injury-hit squad with a new forward on loan. Hull props Gareth Carvell and Ewan Dowes are sidelined for the foreseeable future because of knee injuries. The Black & Whites boss is down to his last three props and is hoping to bring in a new man in time for the game at St Helens on Friday night. On Dowes' injury, Sharp told BBC Radio Humberside: "He's out for anything between four and 12 weeks." Sharp may have to look at players in National League One to replace Carvell and Dowes. Meanwhile, centre Kirk Yeaman is expected to play his first game of the season at Knowsley Road after overcoming an elbow injury. Read more BBC Online

Bush or bust for Dragons By Josh Massoud - St George Leagues Club has reported a $1.75 million loss for the past financial year, a dramatic change of fortune that will see established Dragons stars turning out for Illawarra-based bush clubs this season. The Daily Telegraph can reveal the joint venture is the only NRL outfit that won't field a senior feeder side in either the NSW or QLD Cup because of financial pressure stemming from a $2 million cut to its leagues club grant. Dragons directors this week decided that over-20s players not selected for NRL duty will return to their junior side in the Illawarra Carlton League. Under the scheme, Ben Hornby would play for the Corrimal Cougars and Dean Young for the Dapto Canaries if not picked in first grade. Helensburgh, however, is poised to become the most powerful team in A-grade football after the board voted to shovel all non-Illawarra juniors its way. The Dragons have been tightening their belts ahead of the reduced handout since last season, when their Jersey Flegg team was dumped. Yesterday, the full extent of the NSW Government's higher poker machine taxes and smoking ban was exposed in the club's 2006/07 annual report. After grants and taxes, the venue once known as the Taj Mahal reported a $1,758,108 loss compared with a $1,953,705 profit the previous year. To emphasise the crippling effect of the Iemma Government's reforms, an operating profit of $4.2 million was recorded before the higher tax rate plunged it into the red. The dire situation forced the leagues club to cut its football club grant from $4.5million to $2.5 million. The report also reveals the Dragons borrowed $1.5 million from the leagues club last year. Dragons CEO Peter Doust conceded the decision not to field a senior feeder side was related to cutting costs after losing the $2 million. "If you are fielding a (senior feeder) side it costs more in travel and other expenses,'' Doust, who is also a leagues club director, said. "We are in a region with a very strong and effective local league competition that boasts several (former) first-grade players.'' Leagues club general manager Danny Robinson recently wrote to Iemma - himself a Dragons fan - to convey the club's plight. "I'm disappointed to tell you that he wrote back last week to say he had passed my concerns onto the Department of Gaming and Racing,'' Robinson said. Robinson said the club was "showing signs of recovery'' this financial year and is debt-free. But the big loss will be on the minds of voting members when they head to the ballot box for the club's annual elections in three week's time. A rival ticket, R2K (Return to Kogarah) is challenging for three spots on the board to ensure the Dragons don't flee their traditional home. Read more Daily Telegraph
Gasnier fined, keeps captaincy - ST George-Illawarra star Mark Gasnier will retain the NRL club's captaincy despite being fined over his late-night drinking session in Kings Cross on the weekend. Opening round clash up in the air - THE NRL's marquee opening round clash remains in danger of being forced to find a new home. A Maggies man all his life, now veterans together John Huxley - Fred and Nola McGuire will always remember their wedding on April 21, 1945. "It was the day Wests beat Balmain at Pratten Park 22-14," says Fred, recalling how that afternoon he had sat in his front yard watching people going to the game. "I sort of wished I could have been with them, but the service was fixed for 4.30pm. Anyway, Nola and I didn't miss another match the rest of that season." Like his happy marriage, Mr McGuire's love of rugby league has endured. This year he celebrates 80 years of watching what he describes as the greatest game ever invented. The breakaway code - once described by a rival rugby union official as a "nine-day wonder" - officially launches its centenary season tomorrow at Birchgrove Oval, where its first game was played in April 1908. Yesterday Mr McGuire, who is 86 next week, was back at the oval - which he rates as one of Sydney's prettiest football grounds - recalling past heroes, including his favourite, Keith Holman, and railing at some of the game's current shortcomings. A modest man who describes himself as an "ordinary fan", Mr McGuire, of Five Dock, was a useful golfer, tennis player and grade cricketer for Petersham, for whom he played against Test stars such as Arthur Morris, Ray Lindwall and Bill O'Reilly. The highlight of his rugby league career was turning out as hooker for Erskineville Primary School. But he has been a fan ever since his father took him to his first match: "I was only five or six, but I was hooked." Although Mr McGuire has a chronic back injury that prevents him from attending live games, he and Nola watch every one of them on television. His knowledge of the sport, especially when it comes to Wests, is "truly encyclopedic", says Neil Cadigan, consultant to the league's centenary program of dinners, exhibitions and foundation-club games. Of the century's top 100 players listed by the Herald last week, Mr McGuire had seen 75 play live. He can name the Magpies' premiership-winning side of 1948, and the players who were pinched by Manly. And he can whistle the three songs played by the massed brass bands before the first Test against Great Britain at the SCG in 1932: they were, he recalls, Sweet Jennie Lee, Keep Your Sunny Side Up and Happy Days Are Here Again. Well, they will be just as soon as the new season kicks off in 10 days, although Mr McGuire won't be really happy until league officials move to stamp out foul play, such as swinging arms, shoulder charges and spear tackles, and off-field misbehaviour. "With the AFL planning to move into the western suburbs, rugby league has got to clean up its image," he said. Read more League HQ

Jason Robinson coaching rugby league - Former Wigan and Great Britain winger Jason Robinson on Tuesday announced he is to become involved in grass-roots coaching of rugby league. The 34-year-old England World Cup winner took his first tentative steps back into rugby when he was appointed as a dual-code ambassador for Gillette. Fours months on from bringing his glittering playing career to an end after 14 years at the top level in both codes, Robinson took up a hands-on role in Gillette's sponsorship of representative rugby league, from under-8s to open age. "It's nice to be putting something back in the game," he told a press conference in Bradford. "I'm going to be hands on as well, working in the grass-roots." Robinson scored a remarkable 184 tries in 302 appearances for Wigan and won 12 caps for Great Britain before switching codes at the end of the 2000 season and he went on to play 51 times for England, including the 2003 World Cup triumph. His rise to international stardom from a difficult family background in the back streets of working-class Leeds is a heart-warming tale he hopes will help to inspire other under-privileged youngsters. "Working with Gillette, I am going to be able to use the experience I have gained and the profile I've got to help out the younger guys coming through," he said. "I can give them hope as well. I was brought up in council estate in Leeds and certainly didn't have a privileged background. "If you have a dream and a desire, there is no reason why you can't go on to do something at a high level. "I had to get by with the bare minimum but one of the great things about this programme is that it's going to help the youngsters in a practical sense. "They're able to get the equipment and the facilities they need to become top players." Robinson, who hung up his boots in order to spend more time with his wife and three children, insists that coaching youngsters will not lead to a more senior role in either code of rugby. "My knowledge of rugby union is not that great, to be honest," he said. "Coaching is not something I want to do at professional level. "I see the coaches pulling their hair out on a weekly basis and the stress they go through and it certainly doesn't appeal to me." Robinson, who became a trailblazer with his switch to rugby union, believes the elevation of another league convert, Lesley Vainikolo, to the England team is a good advertisement for the 13-man code. The former Bradford Bulls winger will win his third full cap in Saturday's RBS 6 Nations clash at Murrayfield and Robinson expects him to be a handful for the Scots. "It's good to see the rugby league guys coming in and making an impact," he said. "I played against Lesley and, when I moved from rugby league to rugby union, I was glad I didn't have to be tackling that guy every week because he's a phenomenal player. "I think it's great that he's out there doing his best for England. He's a great advert for rugby league. It just shows what a talent he is and what rugby league can offer." As part of the long-term sponsorship deal, Gillette will provide man-of-the-match awards and monthly prizes for the National Youth League and the Under-18 Academy as well as packages of training equipment for clubs who produce international representatives. England coach Tony Smith said: "It will definitely help produce a bigger playing pool of talent to choose from and create more opportunities for kids to come through." St Helens captain Paul Sculthorpe, who is also an ambassador for Gillette, gave his backing to the initiative but stopped short of making himself available for the World Cup in the autumn. The loose forward quit the Great Britain captaincy and announced his retirement from the international game last year in order to concentrate on his recovery from a series of knee and Achilles tendon injuries with his club. "My priority is getting back to fitness and form for Saints," he said. "I'm not involved (with England) at the moment and it's not something I'm considering at the moment." Read more Sporting Life

The Great Britain star, 25, is expected to be sidelined for around four weeks after suffering soft tissue damage. Clinton Toopi faces a longer lay-off and may need surgery after dislocating his shoulder against the Storm. NRL opening round clash up in the air The NRL's marquee opening round clash remains in danger of being forced to find a new home. SCG Trust officials confirmed the Wests Tigers versus St George-Illawarra clash on Sunday, March 16 would be moved to the Sydney Football Stadium in the event of a clash with the Pura Cup cricket final. New South Wales remain favourites to host the final with the Blues currently ahead of Victoria on run quotients heading into the final round of the regular season. Both teams are tied on 33 competition points. The Blues play the hopelessly out-of-form South Australia in their final round game starting at the SCG on Friday while Victoria take on Queensland. No curfew for players: Gallop - NRL chief executive David Gallop says the league will not implement blanket curfews as a result of an early morning incident in which one of the game's rising stars was allegedly the target of a drive-by shooting. Gallop today described reports that Parramatta star Jarryd Hayne was shot at following a scuffle in Sydney's Kings Cross early Monday morning as a "bloody ugly headline for the game". He said he was still awaiting final reports from both the Eels and St George Illawarra, whose captain Mark Gasnier was also reported to be involved in the fracas which led to the shooting. Gallop did say the Dragons had indicated that they would be fining a player over the incident. While the Eels leadership group will meet tomorrow to consider late-night curfews, Gallop said those sanctions were not in the NRL's plans. "I don't think blanket bans are the answer," Gallop said. "The clear message out of this is if you're consistently in the wrong place at the wrong time, then you're asking for trouble." Read more League HQ

The 21-year-old made a big impression for England in the 2006 Federation Shield and had forced his way into the Rhinos starting line-up when he suffered a major knee injury against Catalans at Headingley last April. He is now set for an extended run with New Zealand centre Clinton Toopi ruled out for the foreseeable future with a dislocated shoulder sustained in Friday's Carnegie World Club Challenge win over Melbourne Storm. Skolars play a smart game By Richard Clifford - In horrendous conditions in Bridgend on Saturday night, London Skolars ruined Celtic Crusaders' St David's Day celebrations by beating them for the first time in 10 attempts thanks to a late Jermaine Coleman try.
It was the Londoners' second win in as many weeks away from home against National League One opposition following their 50-32 victory at Sheffield Eagles.
Just an Ian Webster conversion separated the sides with two minutes to go and Crusaders thought that they had done enough for a narrow win.
However, they didn't account for the Skolars' determination.
The dreadful conditions certainly played their part in the scoreline.
But to the Skolars' credit, their handling game was better than the Crusaders, they made fewer errors and thoroughly deserved their win.
Crusaders' coach John Dixon gave the visitors credit.
"They've two wins in a row so they're doing really well right now," admitted Dixon.
"It's good to see developing teams play well, it's just not good to see them play well against us.
"I give Skolars credit today, they put a lot of hard work in.
"We were never in control of that game. We started really well and we maintained our lead until two minutes before the end.
"But we didn't have enough quality in our ball control to maintain field position and it came unstuck for us today.
"I always felt we'd win the game but we weren't good enough in the last two minutes."
Crusaders now have an intriguing Challenge Cup tie next Sunday when they take on Russian champions Lokomotiv Moscow at the Brewery Field.
"We don't know anything about Moscow," Dixon admitted. "So it'll be a chance to concentrate and work on ourselves.
"Following today's performance, there are a few areas we need to work on so that'll keep us busy for sure." icWales Online

Try Learning Centre launched to convert kids into classroom achievers - A new education facility using the power of rugby to inspire academic achievement will be launched at the Twickenham Stoop by Jason Leonard OBE and Henry Paul on Monday, 10 March. The Try Learning Centre is delivered in partnership between Richmond Council, Harlequins FC and Harlequins RL. Part of the government's Playing for Success initiative, it aims to improve the numeracy, literacy and IT skills of Key Stage Two and Three pupils through a sports-themed educational programme. Children from targeted primary and secondary schools in the borough will attend six week after-school courses. The sessions will include fitness work at Cannons Gym, visits to Twickenham Stadium, documentary making and the chance to interview rugby players. The centre will be located in the Jason Leonard Suite until it is permanently housed in the completed South Stand. It is funded by an annual government grant of £75,000, plus £25,000 from the Council and £50,000 worth of resources, such as facilities and access to players, from Harlequins. Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education on Richmond Council, said, "I am delighted that we will be working in partnership with Harlequins and others on this exciting project. "Rugby, and sport in general, has the power to inspire and entertain, and this superb facility will harness both these features to enthuse children who are not the strongest academically. "From interviewing players, to designing their own rugby shirts and visiting the club shop to learn about marketing and sales, this exciting course aims to boost pupils' self-confidence and attainment. "We want to them be excited about learning and to take their new-found skills and enthusiasm back to the classroom." Mark Evans, Harlequins Rugby Union Chief Executive Officer said, "This centre provides a valuable educational resource to children within the community and gives us a great opportunity to increase our local fan base." Jets Good Form Continues with Win Against Defending Premiers - Newtown's buoyant pre-season form continued when the Jets defeated the 2007 title-holders Parramatta in the NSW Cup trial match played at The Crest Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Jets led 12-6 at half-time and denied the opposition any second-half points as Newtown clocked up an eventual 32-6 winning margin.
For those who tuned in late, the Parramatta and Wentworthville clubs have formed a joint-venture partnership whereby Wentworthville will be Parramatta's entry in the 2008 NSW Cup competition, the former VB Premier League.
A number of Parramatta's 2007 premiership-winning team played in the trial on Sunday.
Newtown posted two early converted tries through off-season signing Donny Thompson, who had impressed as a fullback in last year's Jim Beam Cup competition.
Jets halfback Ben Green, formerly with Cronulla and the Broncos, converted both of the elusive Thompson's tries for Newtown to lead 12-0 after ten minutes.
The Jets had plenty of work to do for the remainder of the first half as the outsize Wentworthville (Parramatta) pack attempted to steamroll the Newtown forwards into submission. It was a testimony to the quality of the Matterson-Yates summer preparation that the Jets weathered this extended barrage and went in at the break 12-6 to the better.
The Jets reasserted their authority early in the second half with a well-taken try by prop Aaron Wheatley (formerly with the Dragons and Bulldogs) on the end of slick passes from Luke Branighan and Rhys Pritchard.
When Pritchard ran on to a deftly-placed kick from halfback Jai Ayoub and scored next to the posts, the game was virtually in Newtown's keeping.
Nothing went right for the big Wentworthville side in the second half - whenever they worked their way into Newtown's territory, they let themselves down with poor handling and unproductive kicking options. The Jets added two further tries through dummy-half sorties from Ayoub and triallist hooker Matt Wakefield.
Newtown coach Greg Matterson was pleased with his team's ability to play through their sets and their determination to get the fundamentals right.
It was a workmanlike display that was reflected in the final scoreline, although Matterson cautioned his players and Jets supporters alike that Sunday's opponents would be a very different proposition when the clubs meet again in the competition rounds.
Newtown used 28 players on Sunday, illustrating the Newtown coaching staff's looming quandary in selecting the 17 players for the opening competition match against Cronulla-Sutherland.
The Newtown and Roosters team managements have therefore decided that one further trial match is warranted prior to the commencement of the 2008 NSW Cup competition rounds.
Next weekend's assignment will see the Jets return to the Matraville High Sports Ground (Anzac Parade, Chifley) to take on Newcastle club Central-Charlestown on Saturday, March 8th, at 4.30pm. Newtown Jets Online
