Sydney clubs in fight for survival By Brent Read - Sydney's ability to sustain nine NRL clubs is again under the spotlight, less than a week after chief executive David Gallop flagged the potential expansion of the premiership.
Several club chief executives contacted by The Australian yesterday raised concerns over the ability of all Sydney clubs to survive, given revelations St George Illawarra may be forced to abandon Wollongong due to the impact of increased poker machine tax.
The Dragons have already had a $2 million cut in funding, prompting St George Leagues Club general manager Danny Robinson to contact Premier Morris Iemma with his concerns.
As revealed in The Australian yesterday, Robinson warned the Dragons could be forced to leave the Illawarra region because of the financial strain.
Penrith chief executive Glenn Matthews, part of a committee formed to lobby the state Government over the issue, believes natural attrition could claim Sydney clubs unless something is done.
"Things aren't getting any easier," Matthews said.
"We have tough times ahead. At the end of the day, what Super League was about was trying to decentralise and have a national competition, and not have too many teams in Sydney.
"There is going to be pressure."
The issues facing Sydney clubs were put into perspective only last week when Brisbane released its financial statements for last year.
The Broncos generated more than $24 million in revenue.
By contrast, the vast majority of Sydney clubs are operating on less than half that after leagues club grants are taken out of the equation.
Last year the NRL showed figures which suggested 12 clubs were losing money without the aid of their leagues clubs, including three that lost more than $4 million.
As if to further illustrate the game's problems, the NRL showed its clubs where they stood in relation to other sports.
Two AFL clubs, Collingwood and West Coast, generated revenue of more than $40 million in 2006. Two Super 14 teams, the Waratahs and Western Force, produced more than $20 million.
"From the outside it looks like there's too many clubs (in Sydney)," Brisbane chief executive Bruno Cullen said.
North Queensland chief executive Peter Parr stressed he was unaware of rival clubs' financial details, but said he believed it would be better if there were fewer teams in Sydney.
"I would suggest there's too many but I don't know the ins and outs of it," Parr said.
Even Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald conceded Sydney clubs faced a testing future.
"Maybe it's added pressure for amalgamation in Sydney or relocation for a Sydney team," Fitzgerald said of the loss of revenue.
"Sydney clubs are under immense financial pressure. We have to get relief somewhere."
South Sydney executive chairman Peter Holmes a Court believes the answer lies in increasing memberships, while Manly is among the clubs looking to expand its revenue base by exploring interstate markets.
The Sea Eagles are poised to play a game on Queensland's Sunshine Coast next year at Stockland Park, a multi-purpose 15,000-seat stadium which is scheduled for completion in 2009.
The privately owned club is also looking at business opportunities in the region.
"I think it's becoming tougher," Mayer said.
"At the moment it's a bit early to panic. Every club has to be well and truly aware that their traditional revenue streams are going to be tested. You have to be creative. We have found a second home on the Sunshine Coast." The Australian

Countdown to World Club Challenge - It's a Champions League final at rugby
Venue: Elland Road Kick-off: 1930 GMT, Friday 29 February BBC coverage: Live on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra and highlights on BBC One and BBC Sport website at 1300 GMT on 1 March
Leeds have named a full-strength side for Friday's World Club Challenge clash with NRL champions Melbourne Storm.
Brent Webb was the only slight doubt after suffering a facial injury against Wakefield, but he starts at full-back, with the bench options to be finalised.
Melbourne have named Cooper Cronk as their captain while 19-year-old Will Chambers replaces Matt King after the centre's move to Warrington.
And Russell Aitken comes in for injured stand-off Greg Inglis.
Melbourne also include the highly rated Israel Folau at centre, with the 18-year-old already earning comparisons with Kangaroos legend Mal Meninga.
Folau will come up against Leeds veteran Keith Senior, who admits he is relishing the battle.
"I love it when people are bigging up the bloke I'm playing against," Senior said.
"I've not seen a right lot of Folau because I don't watch much Australian stuff but I've heard plenty about him, especially in the last few days. He's obviously the next big thing down under."
The match will be Leeds' second Grand Final in four years following on from their 39-22 win over Canterbury Bulldogs in 2005.
British clubs have enjoyed the best of the recent clashes between the Super League and NRL champions with Sydney's win over St Helens back in 2003 the last Australian triumph.
Leeds and Great Britain scrum-half Rob Burrow said the match has been at the front of the Rhinos players' minds since their Grand Final win over St Helens last October.
"The day after the Grand Final we were thinking about the opportunity to play in this," he said.
Cooper Cronk will skipper the Storm at Elland Road
"It's certainly not been a distraction - it's something we've been building for.
"It's a Champions League final at rugby. Ask any player how much it means, and they will say it means a lot. It's been a long time coming - but preparation has been great."
The Rhinos are strong favourites to take the trophy after four straight victories at the start of the Super League season.
In contrast, Melbourne have been restricted to two warm-up games against Manly and National League One side Halifax.
Melbourne's preparations have also included an opposed training session with Hull FC at Featherstone's Post Office Road ground.
"It is something different," said Storm coach Craig Bellamy.
"Obviously all our training sessions have just been with us. We hope this will be a bit more stimulating for our players."
But Bellamy said his team will have to step up a gear if they are to trouble Leeds.
"We know we have some improvement in us and we know we are going to need it," said Bellamy.
"I am not making excuses but we have a really young squad here and it's been a big week for them."

Bellamy is Bronco's first pick - By Paul Kent - Brisbane chief executive Bruno Cullen says he will meet Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy within the next few weeks, confirming the Broncos view Bellamy as their first choice to replace the departing Wayne Bennett.
The Courier-Mail can exclusively confirm that Bellamy heads the Broncos' wish list - but Melbourne should not be the only club nervous, with Canberra's Neil Henry listed among the next group of contenders.
Cullen spoke to Bellamy the day after Bennett resigned and the pair have agreed to a more extensive meeting before the end of March to gauge each other's interest.
The Broncos board on Tuesday culled a list of 33 to nine and will now start the process of head-hunting a new coach to replace Bennett or, in the event talks with Bellamy progress, an interim coach to fill the job until he becomes available in 2010.
Listed alongside Henry on the second line of shortlisted coaches are St Helens coach Daniel Anderson and current Broncos assistant Ivan Henjak.
Bellamy remains the priority.
"I rang Craig and told him Wayne had resigned and asked him if, down the track, he would be interested in having a discussion," Cullen said.
"He did say that he wasn't coming off contract until 2010.
"When I spoke to him he was preparing to take Melbourne to Leeds for the World Club Challenge so I didn't want to interrupt him, and when he gets back next week he starts preparing for the season kick-off. So I think, in the period between now and certainly before the end of March, we will get the chance to run through it quite thoroughly.
"It won't be immediately, but certainly within the next few weeks."
Bellamy, the reigning premiership-winning coach and for five years a former Brisbane assistant, is seen as the logical choice for many but there are board concerns that the club should not be forced to endure successive seasons with a coach who will not be around the following year.
Since Bellamy remains intent on seeing out his Storm contract, the Broncos must decide whether they are willing to take that risk.
As well as creating the need to find a suitable applicant, the strategy holds a myriad of hidden dangers. The most worrying is the destabilising effect it could have on a club known for its stability.
Brand issues and a raft of other commercial considerations also affect the decision.
Former Penrith coach John Lang and Henjak, whose intentions remain unclear, are believed to head the shortlist of possible interim coaches.
While fraught with danger, the interim coach strategy could also deliver Henry if negotiations with Bellamy break down.
"Can I be so bold as to say that it is not just for Craig, either," Cullen said. "If there is another coach that we feel can do the job and isn't available until 2010, we will look at that."
The Broncos will not ask Bellamy to consider seeking an early release at Melbourne to make for a smoother transition to replace Bennett in 2009.
"We're not in the business of encouraging people to break their contracts so I wouldn't be taking that line," Cullen said.
"And Craig would be very loath to breach the current deal with Melbourne."
Understandably, Storm chief executive Brian Waldron is intent on retaining Bellamy, no matter what interest exists.

Noad makes his farewells and leaves Bulldogs By Josh Massoud - THE Bulldogs are now a club without a CEO after Malcolm Noad packed up his desk this week.
Noad resigned on Monday amid immense pressure from the new board, but agreed to continue over the next fortnight to oversee the club's move from Belmore to Homebush Bay.
The Daily Telegraph last night learned that Noad finished up on Wednesday, leaving officials Terry Lamb and Brad Clyde to ensure the shift runs smoothly.
Bulldogs chairman George Peponis confirmed Noad's resignation was now effective immediately.
"The original intention was for Malcolm to stay on for a couple of weeks, but that's now not the case," Peponis said.
"His last day was on Wednesday, but we are still hoping he will come in to farewell staff."
Given the tensions surrounding Noad's future after his opponents were successful at last week's AGM, both parties felt it was unproductive for him to continue any longer.
With Noad gone, Peponis is now ramping up efforts to hire a new CEO before round one. The same time frame also applies to the club's search for a media manager to replace Chris O'Brien, who quit after sending emails from a fake address to discredit Noad's boardroom rivals. Directors are continuing their investigations.
"We've had a lot of applications for CEO and we will begin interviews next week," Peponis said.
The club's peace summit was yesterday postponed until the new CEO is appointed.

Tate's late arrival By Steve Deane - Brent Tate didn't quite know who to support when the New Zealand Breakers took on the Brisbane Bullets in the NBL playoffs last Saturday.
A Breakers season ticket holder, the Warriors' marquee signing is a diehard Queenslander and long-time fan of the Bullets.
In the end Tate, who alongside brother-in-law and Warriors captain Steve Price has been a fixture at Breakers home games this season, decided he probably wanted the New Zealand team to win.
He has no such divided loyalties when it comes to his new league club.
Tate will make his Warriors debut tonight against Manly in a pre-season encounter on the Sunshine Coast but he has actually been living in Auckland for seven months.
His contract at the Warriors didn't start until November but he shifted to Auckland the week after the Brisbane Broncos' season ended so the Warriors could oversee his rehabilitation from a knee injury.
Tate's own 2007 season ended in July when he damaged medial and anterior cruciate ligaments representing Queensland in game three of State of Origin.
The injury, suffered just weeks after he signed for the Warriors, not only ended his season, but also an eight-year association with the Broncos.
"When I did it I didn't know whether to feel sorry for myself, Brisbane or the Warriors," he says. "It was a tough time all round."
Choosing to end his Brisbane career had been a wrench. But being denied a shot at a fairytale exit - or any kind of on-field exit for that matter - was even harder to take.
"It wasn't very nice to finish that way at Brisbane and it's not the ideal way to start at a new club, but I guess what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. If I come through the other end a better person and a better player, then it can only be a positive."
But why leave a perennial contender like the Brisbane Broncos for the Warriors in the first place?
Money was surely a factor, with Tate reported to be commanding big bucks at his new club.
But his friendship with Price, who is married to his sister Jo, also made the decision easier.
"Never at any stage did Steve pressure me into coming here. I just felt like I needed a change and I didn't really want to go and play in Sydney. I'm an avid Queenslander.
"I just felt really comfortable with the decision to come to New Zealand and it has turned out to be a really good one."
The club's biggest signing since Price in 2005, Tate isn't fazed by the level of expectation Warriors fans are sure to heap on him.
"I haven't even thought about it. I haven't had time to. I've been pretty much focused on getting my knee right before anything else. There is always a bit of expectation but I've come from a club in Brisbane where you are expected to win every week. So I guess I'm used to that."
Tate's a good talker, happy to discuss pretty much any subject. But he could never be accused of blowing his own trumpet.
"I hate sitting here telling you what I'm going to bring [to the team]," he says. "I've just come here to hopefully do my job and play well every week. I'm not going to sit here and tell you I'm going to do this and do that, I'm just here to play footy."
Tate has been one of the most recognisable players in the NRL in recent years, thanks to a distinctive neck brace worn since a potentially career-ending injury in 2003. But he says his neck problems are now well and truly behind him.
"There is a real misconception out there that if I get another neck injury it is going to finish my career. It's not like that at all."
His problem stemmed from a hyper-flexible neck that meant when he got hit hard in a tackle, a whiplash-effect would cause nerve damage. The result was often unconsciousness and a loss of feeling in his arm.
The problem got worse to the point where he was "getting knocked out every week".
The brace fixed the problem but he wears it now mainly out of habit. "It's more like a security blanket. I just feel really comfortable when I've got it on."
He'll be strapping on the brace again tonight, but it is his knee he'll be thinking about. "I am really excited but I am also gonna be pretty nervous.
"It's been eight months now and it is starting to feel like a knee again. That's a real relief. It's not a very nice thing to happen, I can tell you that. I still have days where it is pretty sore but on others I feel like I can do everything. From where I've come from, it's a hell of a lot better than where it was.
"My top-end speed is pretty good. The only thing I am lacking is that explosiveness off the mark. They say that is the last thing to come, but I don't think I'm too far off."
With fullback Wade McKinnon having been ruled out for the season after suffering a similar knee injury in the club's first pre-season game against Newcastle, Tate's nerves are understandable.
"It was a real stark reminder that these things can happen. But I know I've worked really hard on my knee and if something does happen, that's just in the hands of the footy gods."

No dogfight but Knights board candidates ready for crucial joust By Glenn Jackson and Brad Walter - There are no rebel tickets and the likelihood is the fake email scams and dirty tricks will be kept to a minimum, but in the coming weeks another important board election will be held.
Knights members will vote in a postal ballot ahead of an April 9 AGM - and like the bitter Bulldogs board wrangle, it is being touted as crucial to their future, the club's financial position having been magnified by the Jets' A-League triumph.
With the Knights set to post a $1.2 million loss for the past financial year, and some player and supporter dissatisfaction throughout last season, the disenchantment has crept into the boardroom.
"Some are saying everything's hunky-dory, others have said we've eroded a sustainable marketing positioning that has held us in good stead," said former Knights captain Tony Butterfield, who with former player Rob Tew, life member Leigh Maughan, retired butcher Bob Lyons and marriage celebrant Helen Scott will challenge the incumbents. "Many sponsors have been approaching me, informally of course, advising they don't intend to renew their box holdings."
Butterfield is standing for his second stint on the Newcastle board largely because of the player purge last season.
"Some people on the board don't have sufficient background in rugby league," he said. "While they do in business, rugby league is a different business. You're dealing with humans who are happy to run back out there with a broken thumb or a split eye or a broken nose."
However, he denied he would seek to have coach Brian Smith removed should he be successful.
"My issue is with the board allowing him to take such liberties," Butterfield said. "I don't think they gave due consideration to the paying punter and the sponsors."
The new nine-person board is assured of at least two new faces, with a change in constitution halving the Newcastle Rugby League's contribution to the board from four to two places.
Meanwhile, Steelers Leagues Club president Peter Newell yesterday admitted the club was struggling for survival but said the Illawarra end of the Dragons joint venture would fight to ensure matches continued to be played at WIN Stadium.
Newell made the vow in response to revelations St George Leagues Club general manager Danny Robinson had written to NSW Premier Morris Iemma warning that increased poker machine taxes and the ban on smoking could lead to St George Illawarra abandoning Wollongong.
"The bottom line is that, yes, it is a significant struggle for us, but that's hardly new," Newell said. "We've got through it since 1982."
And Knights recruit Danny Wicks yesterday admitted he was lucky to survive a motorcycle accident on Tuesday which has ruled him out of the side's final trial, against the Sharks, this weekend. The prop walked away from a head-on collision with a car which left his scooter a write-off and passers-by fearing for his life. Read more League HQ

Never heard of Luke Stuart? Well, pay attention The heart and soul of Souths likes to go unnoticed, but he's due some recognition, writes Glenn Jackson. You wouldn't have known this, and you may not care, but Luke Stuart may retire at the end of the season. The reason for such indifference is that this veteran player is a relative unknown.
"I suppose I do try and stay out of it, in some ways," the South Sydney forward said this week. "It's not like I play a game where I get noticed a lot. And I guess I like flying under the radar. It suits the type of person I am."
Not even the latest American spy planes can fly under the radar for this long. Stuart has played 172 first-grade games over 10 seasons. And yet he has managed to foreshadow his retirement before anyone really knows anything about him.
When the Herald approached Stuart this week ahead of tomorrow night's Charity Shield match against the Dragons, his response was typically humble. "Geez, you must be desperate," he said. After all, the 31-year-old estimates that he has scored more tries than interviews. And he has scored just nine tries.
But don't underestimate the impact of his loss on the sexy new South Sydney should Stuart pull the pin.
"Someone else will have to make 30-odd tackles and 20-odd runs a game for a start," Rabbitohs coach Jason Taylor offered. "You know, a lot of the good teams have got one or two of those players - who are the heart and soul of your team."
Stuart is the ultimate Franklins footballer. No frills, no fuss, and fairly cheap (relatively speaking). A player who still wears his boots black and boring. "I wish I had a bit of show in me," he said. "A bit of skill. You've just got to work with what you've got."
But Stuart will take some milestones with him. He will be one of only a handful of men to captain an Australian side in the US, after skippering Souths against Leeds in Jacksonville in January. And he is one of only two players to have remained at the club since its reinstatement (in 2002) - although he's unsure whether the glass of champagne will be half empty or half full when he toasts that one.
"I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing, to be honest," he said. "It's not a competition. I don't cross the names off each year or anything. It's not something I'm proud of, so to speak."
What it does is give him the right, more than any player at the club besides Scott Geddes - the other member of the exclusive club - not only to pass comment on the new order under Peter Holmes a Court and Russell Crowe ("it's like being at a new club") but to reminisce.
The lowlight of the old order?
"Probably '02 to ... all the way through to last year," he said, managing to joke but be deadly serious at the same time. "It was pretty much the same story for us. Up against it every week. When you're not winning games, it's not a happy place to be."
That, says director of football Shane Richardson - who brought the Heathcote junior into grade at Cronulla - makes Stuart's feats even more impressive, albeit largely invisible to many.
"The thing about Luke is that he put the same effort in when we were s--- to when we were good," he said. "Luke carried the team for a while, but having better players [now], he's been more outstanding."
That hasn't stopped Stuart effectively playing for his future every year. The longest contract he ever signed was a two-year deal and he's been on one-year-at-a-time terms for the past four seasons - administrator-speak for we'll see how you go and then decide. This year is no different.
"I think about it [retirement] every year," he said. "This year could be the year. I don't know how you come to a decision like that, but I'm definitely getting close to that expiry date." Read more League HQ

Leeds' Ian Kirke ruled of Carnegie World Club Challenge clash - Second row Ian Kirke has been ruled out for Leeds Rhinos for the Carnegie World Club Challenge against Melbourne Storm this Friday at Elland Road, kick off 7.30pm.
Kirke picked up a hamstring injury in the win over Catalans Dragons last Friday at Headingley Carnegie and his place in the side will be taken by prop Nick Scruton. That is the only change to the side which won the Grand Final for Leeds last October and earned them a place in F! riday's game against the NRL Champions.
Eight of the Rhinos team played the last time Leeds took part in the Carnegie World Club Challenge in 2005 when they beat Canterbury Bulldogs 39-32 in front of 37,028 at Elland Road.
Rob Burrow needs just one try to become only the 23rd player in the club's history to score 100 tries in a career whilst captain Kevin Sinfield is looking to continue his run of 45 successive matches of playing and scoring in every game.
Tickets are still on sale for the game and can be booked from the Headingley Carnegie ticket office by calling 08700 606050 or from the box office at the RFL or Elland Road. Tickets will remain on sale with the Rhinos until 2pm on Friday 29th February.
Any remaining tickets will then be returned to Elland Road and will be available for purchase on match night. If you purchase your tickets at Leeds Rhinos ticket office, you will then need to collect them prior to 3pm on Friday 29th February and any uncollected tickets will go to Elland Road and can be picked up from the West Stand ticket collections office on match night.
Fans will also be able to purchase tickets on the night of the game from the West Stand ticket office at Elland Road, however we urge supporters to pre-purchase tickets before then to help alleviate congestion and make sure all fans are inside the ground for the big kick off.

Wayne Bennett Brisbane Broncos Coach
RLCM Coachtalk Yearbook 2007 Extract
"........my call is to provide the information, and to teach them. We create the right environment to learn in.
"Discipline's a part of it, and it's making young men realise we're apart of a team so we have to play as one. Part of that price is doing what the team requires you to do and that's apart of your goal to make sure that happens."
Being the coach also means being tougher on yourself. Wayne Bennett stresses the need to ask more of yourself; being able to recognise that if the coach is the problem and things aren't working out the way they should be, then something must be done.
"It's about recognising that I have to create the atmosphere and the rules and regulations they're going to have. It's not about being a tough guy, and changing your personality. It's about always being yourself."
"You've got to be honest with yourself - prioritise - if you can't be then the team suffers, because you can't do your job properly. Make yourself the best coach you can with the time available, and the amount of other things you have, and that's what your instrument is; your instrument is self, you make a difference."
This is when time management becomes an essential component of a coaches strategy. In order to provide the team with the best opportunities, a coach must be able to commit himself; to the squad and to the teams preparation.
As a coach is it imperative that a high level of commitment is demonstrated to the players; wanting to go to training, providing enough discipline and drive to want to get the job done.......Click RLCM Bookshop buy a RLCM eBook and it will be in your PC today.
