RFL offers Europeans equality - Rugby Football League no longer considering Europeans as 'overseas'. The Rugby Football League has amended its rules to allow players from key developing European nations to move to England freely. Under the new guidelines certain foreign players will no longer be considered as 'overseas' if signed by professional clubs.

The nations that will benefit are France, Russia, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Serbia, Lebanon, Georgia, Holland, Germany, Austria, Estonia, Czech Republic, Morocco, Malta, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Latvia, Ukraine, Norway and Sweden.

Developing players will be able to gain experience in well established RFL professional competitions.

Advantages

Rugby League European Federation's Development Executive Kevin Rudd told the RFL website: "This is tremendous news and I hope that professional clubs in the UK will take advantage of this new ruling, which will create opportunities for players from these developing nations.

"The new system should assist the growth of Rugby League throughout Europe and also provide unique professional development for both the individuals and the clubs involved."

The amendment comes in the same week that Russian team Vereya played Leigh Miners in the second round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup and English clubs had their scouts on the lookout for potential signings. Sky Sports
Aussie Fijians take offence By Zanzeer Singh - The Australian Fijian Rugby League will not stop any of its players from vying for a spot in the Fiji Bati team despite severing its ties with the Fiji National Rugby League. The AFRL distanced itself from the FNRL after Australian coach Arthur Kitinas and trainer Steve Driscoll were relieved of their Fiji Bati duties last year.

The contracts of Kitinas and Driscoll were not renewed by the FNRL board after the Tongan tour in October.

This is after the duo were cited for differences in protocol during the Fiji Bati- Ikale Tahi one-off Test match in Nuku'alofa.

AFRL president James Pickering said they took offence to the accusations labelled against the Australian duo.

The former Fiji Bati said as a result they do not have any official engagements with the FNRL.

"We will continue developing our local talents here," Pickering said from Sydney.

"There are a lot of upcoming players. We will also look after the welfare of the players coming in from Fiji on club contracts."

Several Australia-based players are vying for a spot in the Fiji Bati team for the Rugby League World Cup in October.

Star NRL players like Wes Naiqama (Dragons), Aston Simms (Broncos), Stanley Waqa (Roosters), Daryl Millard (Bulldogs) and Ryan Millard (Bulldogs) are among the Aussie boys expected to feature for the Fiji Bati in the RLWC.

Pickering said they will not stop any player wishing to represent Fiji in the RLWC in Queensland.

He said plans are in the pipeline for the Australia Fijians team to tour Fiji after the RLWC.

Meanwhile, FNRL chairman Peni Musunamasi said they have no problems with AFRL heading its own way.

He said FNRL will continue its development work in the country. "They have severed ties with us," Musunamasi said.

"I have no personal grudges against the AFRL. It was a board decision to remove Arthur and Steve.

"AFRL is looking after its own affairs. Likewise we will do ours. I'm happy with the development work in the country.

"We will continue to build our players for the world cup.

"Any overseas player who wishes to put his hand up for the world cup is most welcome to attend the trials."

Musunamasi said AFRL is looking to send two junior teams to play in the country in the next few months.

In the 2008 RLWC Fiji is grouped with France and Scotland in Pool B.

The Fiji Bati face France on November 1 at the WIN Stadium in Wollongong. Its second pool match against Scotland will be played at the Bluetongue Stadium in Central Coast on November 5.

NZRL appoint Allen Gore as director - The New Zealand Rugby League's board has appointed Allen Gore to replace Phil Campbell as a director. Campbell resigned on February 18, he was asked to reconsider but confirmed his decision yesterday. Using the NZRL's constitution, the remaining four directors voted unanimously to appoint Gore to fill Campbell's position. The directors say they have acted in the game's best interests so the board can ensure the continuing good governance of the NZRL until its annualmeeting on March 29. Radio NZ

Halifax plot top-flight return By Tony Curtis - Halifax have joined the race to join the Super League in 2009 - six years after their relegation from the to-flight. The Super League is set to expand from 12 to 14 teams next season - with promotion and relegation replaced by a three-year licence system.

And Halifax, who have been dogged by problems since their departure from the Super League, now feel they are in a position to return.

With the East Stand at The Shay - which the club share with Halifax Town FC - set to be completed by December and "serious discussions" with potential new directors ongoing, Halifax are going to pit themselves against Celtic Crusaders, Salford and Widnes in a battle for the two extra places.

Chairman Michael Steele, who saw his side give a good show of themselves against Melbourne Storm on Friday, told the Halifax Courier: "We have notified the Rugby Football League we will be applying for a three-year licence for 2009 onwards and that process will be complete by the end of March.

"At the moment, the East Stand is scheduled for handover at the end of this year, which would put us ahead of clubs like Wakefield, Salford and Castleford in that our ground would be complete before the start of the season." Sky sports
Ealing and Southall Rugby League Festivals - As always, Harlequins Rugby League Community team have been busy out and about coaching and introducing students in London and The South to our fantastic sport of Rugby League.

Titans boss slams the AFL By Karl deKroo - Titans boss Michael Searle last night launched an astonishing attack against Australian Football League expansion plans on the Gold Coast, labelling the AFL "cannibals" and vowing to fight to protect his team's turf.

On the eve of the launch of the Titans' second season at the club's new multi-million dollar stadium at Robina, Searle said he had been left seething by AFL suggestions the Titans had got lucky on the Coast.

He said the AFL's aggressive attempt to make its presence felt in the region was the greatest challenge facing his club and he intended to be pro-active in repelling its advances. "I think we have to be,'' Searle said.

"The AFL has shown itself as a sport that wants to cannibalise. It doesn't want to co-exist, it wants to cannibalise. This battle has just begun, but I completely support (NRL chief) David Gallop's comments from last week. We must have a plan that will counteract what the AFL is trying to achieve.''

Gallop last week labelled the AFL arrogant in response to claims from AFL commission chairman Mike Fitzpatrick that the Titans had been "lucky in the way the stars - the government, the region and various other crucial aspects - suddenly aligned''.

Gallop vowed to fight fire with fire as the AFL ramps up efforts to establish a team on the Coast by 2011, and Searle was just as forthright.

"I take great umbrage to the comments from the AFL chairman last week suggesting that the success of the Titans and the NRL on the Gold Coast was some sort of fluke,'' Searle said. "It was a seven-year campaign.

"It was an incredibly arrogant and insulting suggestion. It is always said that the greatest mistake you can make is to underestimate your opponent and clearly the AFL is underestimating our determination to protect our turf.''

Searle admitted the Titans lacked the resources to match the AFL's push in a pure monetary sense, but he felt with the backing of the NRL they would continue to build their brand in Australia's fastest growing city.

"The massive amounts of money that the AFL is looking to pump into this region will be a huge challenge for us,'' Searle said. "We are just one club trying to take on the might of the AFL.

"But I think we have already seen a pretty clear message from the people of the Gold Coast that their loyalty and support can't be bought. It is not for sale.''

The Titans will play their first game at Skilled Park on Saturday night when they contest the inaugural Larry Corowa Shield against Wests Tigers. Read more Daily Telegraph

St Helens star Pryce escapes ban - St Helens stand-off Leon Pryce has avoided a ban following an incident with Bradford's Andy Lynch. Last season, Pryce was handed a three-match ban for "ungentlemanly conduct" after grabbing the testicles of Bradford prop Sam Burgess.

Pryce was spotted committing a similar offence on Lynch during his side's 22-16 win over Bradford on Friday. But the Rugby Football League's match review panel decided that "contact was absolutely minimal".

In January, Pryce signed a new four-year contract to stay at St Helens until the end of the 2012 season. The 26-year-old moved to Knowsley Road from Bradford in 2005 and played in the seventh Grand Final of his career when Saints lost to Leeds at Old Trafford in October.

Brisbane Second Division Rugby League - Gradings for 2008 released - The Brisbane Second Division Rugby League gradings for 2008 were released at a meeting of clubs on 26 February 2008.

The Chairman, Mick Tierney, said that there were 73 teams from 43 clubs. This compares favourably with 65 teams from 42 clubs nominated in 2007.

The Southside competitions will again be run in four grades - compared to three grades in 2007.

Clubs which are new, or returning, to the League in 2008 are Albany Creek, Greenbank, Kallangur Bulls, Norths St Josephs, Nundah Devils and Souths Graceville.

The Chairman said that one of the most pleasing aspects of the nominations in 2008 is that there are 13 nominations for the Arthur Sparks Shield (Under 20) competition. This is up from 6 teams that finished in this grade last year.

The League's major sponsor again this year is Castlemaine Perkins XXXX and the associate sponsors are again AlphaSport and Struddys Sports. All competitions will commence on Saturday 8 March 2008. Read more Brisbane Second Division

Broncos take a look into the future - Rugby league fans could get a glimpse into the future with Test fullback Karmichael Hunt to play five-eighth for Brisbane in their final trial match before the new NRL season.

Hunt, the youngest player to debut for Brisbane as a 17-year-old in 2004, has played halfback before.

But with skipper Darren Lockyer still rehabilitating from knee surgery and new recruit Peter Wallace recovering from a corked hip, Hunt will pull on the Broncos No.6 jumper for the first time against Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval on Saturday night.

It's a jersey previously worn by champions such as Lockyer and Wally Lewis.

And many believe Hunt will follow the career path of Lockyer and eventually move from fullback to five-eighth when the Australian and Brisbane captain retires.

"I guess playing a bit more five-eighth is something that people say could happen down the track, but right now the one thing I know is Darren Lockyer will be there when round one comes around," said Hunt.

"I just see this as a perfect opportunity to gain more experience in taking more control of a game.

"It's just more of an educational process, like it was playing halfback the couple of times in the past."

With Hunt taking over the playmaking role, Darius Boyd, a former Australian schoolboy fullback, will play behind a very young an inexperienced backline featuring rookies Reece Robinson, a cousin of Anthony Mundine and Nathan Merrett, 17-year-old Gerard Beale who has impressed in all three trials and moves from the wing to the centres and William Tupou named on the wing.

Shane Perry has been named halfback against his Queensland Cup club side but is expected to dip out for the Broncos' NRL season start against Penrith with former Panther Peter Wallace to wear the No.7.

Michael Ennis has been named at hooker with Parramatta recruit PJ Marsh on the bench but those positions are likely to be reversed for the March 16 opener.

Corey Parker has been named captain in possibly another pointer to the future, pore although Hunt seems likely to eventually take over those duties from Lockyer.

Former St George Illawarra winger Tom Hewitt, a late addition to Brisbane's roster, is confident a sternum injury will not prevent him pulling on a Broncos jumper for the first time.

"It's still pretty sore but it won't stop me playing," declared the apprentice electrician who scored five tries in a handful of first grade starts last year.

Brisbane team: Darius Boyd, Reece Robinson, Gerard Beale, Steve Michaels, William Tupou, Karmichael Hunt, Shane Perry, Joel Clinton, Michael Ennis, Ashton Sims, Corey Parker (c), Sam Thaiday, David Stagg. Res: PJ Marsh, Greg Eastwood, Tonie Carroll, Nick Kenny, Tom Hewitt, Joel Moon. Read more League HQ

Carnegie World Club Challenge a big deal for Rob Burrows
By Ian Laybourn - Leeds and Great Britain scrum-half Rob Burrow admits the Super League champions have had their eyes on the Carnegie World Club Challenge for the last four months.

The Rhinos will defend Britain's proud record in the annual clash of the champions against Melbourne Storm at Elland Road on Friday, and the match cannot come quickly enough for Burrow.

"The day after the Grand Final we were thinking about the opportunity to play in this," he said.

"It's been a long time coming - but preparation has been great."

Leeds will go into the contest battle-hardened after four straight victories at the start of their title defence and are 1-4 with one bookmaker to stretch Super League's success to seven wins from nine against their counterparts from the National Rugby League.

"You couldn't have asked for a better start," said Burrow.

"It is just what we needed. The fact that you're playing games is good, but coming in with four wins is even better.

"We've obviously had a little eye on this game - we knew we needed to perform.

"It's certainly not been a distraction; it's something we've been building for.

"They've had great preparation as well, so all the hallmarks are there for it to be a great occasion."

Burrow was in the Leeds team that beat Canterbury Bulldogs 39-32 in front of a bumper crowd of 37,028 at Elland Road three years ago - and there are hopes of a similar turn-out on Friday, with pre-match ticket sales close to 30,000.

"It was an amazing feat in 2005," said Burrow.

"You don't think the Grand Final can get any better, but the fact that you get to represent your country against another country's top club side is amazing.

"It is a Champions League final at rugby. Ask any player how much it means, and they will say it means a lot."

Burrow, player of the series in Great Britain's 3-0 series win over New Zealand in the autumn, will get the chance to pit himself against the current Australia scrum-half in Cooper Cronk - who was chosen to captain Melbourne in the absence of Cameron Smith.

"He's a world-class player," said Burrow.

"Right across the team, there are international quality players - and every Leeds player will be tested against world-class opposition.

"It brings out the best in you. It's a challenge and it shows where you are on the ladder."

Loose forward Dallas Johnson led Melbourne in Friday's friendly at Halifax but was passed over in favour of 24-year-old Cronk, who made his Test debut in the Kangaroos' 58-0 win over New Zealand in October.

"We have a leadership group," Cronk told a press conference at Elland Road.

"I've still got a role to play - nothing changes."

Liam Foran, a 19-year-old half-back, was the player omitted from the 21-strong touring party when Storm coach Craig Bellamy announced his initial squad - which will be trimmed to 18 on Thursday.

Will Chambers, 19, has played just five senior matches but is set to take the place of Test centre Matt King - who played a key role in Storm's Grand Final triumph but is now at Warrington.

Russell Aitken, 22, who has made eight appearances in the National Rugby League, will plug the gap created by injury to stand-off Greg Inglis.

"We've got a couple of slight injury problems, but I don't think it's going to prevent anybody from playing," said Bellamy.

"We'll basically go with the team that started on Friday night. We started with that team against Manly in our first trial, so those guys have had some games with those combinations."

Leeds are injury free and are likely to line up with their Grand Final team.

Melbourne, who have been in the country a week already, were continuing their preparations today with an opposed training session with Super League club Hull behind closed doors at Featherstone's Post Office Road ground.

"It is something different, obviously all our training sessions have just been with us. We hope this will be a bit more stimulating for our players, " said Bellamy. Read more Sporting Life

Thatto Heath Crusaders reach the Semi Final of the Ace Insurance (Europe) BARLA National Cup - St Helens side Thatto Heath Crusaders are the first side to reach the semi finals of the Ace Insurance (Europe) BARLA National Cup with victory at Waterhead

The first half saw the Crusaders take the lead with a converted try from Mike Woods, Andy Stott landing the first of his three goals.

Waterhead came back and levelled the game after Chris McAndrew crossed the whitewash with Carl Sneyd adding the extras

Crusaders doubled there points tally with a Dave Sutton try and they went into the second half 12-6 ahead.

Waterhead hit back early in the second half with their second try from Scott Beswick but Sneyd couldn't add the extras

Both sides went for it but the Crusaders took an eight point lead eight minutes from time with a third converted try scored by Shaun Quinn.

Waterhead fought back but with an Alan Wilkinson converted try in the dying minutes of the game to cut the deficit to two points, but the Crusaders held on to move into the last four of the competition. Read more BARLA

Dave Taylor's shock demotion By Steve Ricketts - Boom Broncos prop Dave Taylor's chances of playing against mentor Petero Civoniceva in the round 1 blockbuster against Penrith have nosedived following the 19-year-old's shock demotion to Rockhampton-based Central Comets.

Taylor has paid the price for a lacklustre display against Canberra at Orange last weekend, with Sydney imports Joel Clinton and Ashton Sims chosen in the front row for the club's final trial against Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval on Saturday night.

Nick Kenny is the other prop in a 19-man squad that will be captained by second-rower Corey Parker in the absence of injured stars Darren Lockyer and Justin Hodges.

Another captaincy candidate, Karmichael Hunt, will start at five-eighth for the first time with Darius Boyd at fullback.

Taylor, who recently signed a 12-month contract extension with the Broncos, has been widely tipped to play State of Origin for Queensland as early as this year.

But the Broncos are not going to rush the 115kg Blackwater product, who can expect to play regularly for the Comets until he improves his consistency.

How far Taylor has fallen in the pecking order is highlighted by the fact Ben Hannant will miss the Redcliffe game with a sternum injury.

The Broncos' lack of depth out wide has also been exposed by the naming of a three-quarter line that includes only one player with NRL experience - centre Steve Michaels.

The other centre is 17-year-old Gerard Beale, who is expected to play wing in the round 1 clash with Penrith at Suncorp Stadium. The wingers are Cronulla signing Reece Robinson, 20, and rugby union recruit William Tupou, 17.

Three members of the club's NRL elite squad - Denan Kemp, Nick Emmett and Craig Frawley - were overlooked and are set to play Queensland Cup this weekend.

St George Illawarra wing recruit Tom Hewitt has been named on the Broncos bench which also includes Joel Moon who has been quiet in earlier trials.

Moon, 19, has been regarded as one of the most talented youngsters in the NRL but he could not find a place in the Broncos backline despite the absence of Lockyer, Hodges and halfback Peter Wallace (hip).

Test fullback Hunt said yesterday his selection at five-eighth could be a sign of things to come.

"I guess playing five-eighth is something that could happen down the track and I see this as a perfect chance to gain more experience at taking control of a game," he said.

Corey Parker said it was a "big challenge" captaining the side and that he was keen to retain his goal-kicking role after finishing the club's leading points scorer last year with 106 from 45 goals and four tries. Lockyer and Michael Ennis were the other kickers.

A good look at pro and Conn By Pat Mcleod - Titan Daniel Conn is happy to risk his model looks to secure a first grade spot with the Gold Coast NRL club in 2008.

That may be the case on Saturday night when the Titans debut at Skilled Park against the Wests Tigers in the Coast team's final trial before the season opener on March 14.

Coach John Cartwright has the fortunate headache of having a long cast to choose from and Conn's back row spot is where there is the most competition.

Since coming to the Gold Coast from the Bulldogs at the end of the 2006 season, the solidly built forward has found a lucrative sideline as a male model.

But there are no doubts where his priority is.

"I would rather be known for the footy side of things," he stressed.

"The modelling is just fun, something to take my mind away from football."

At the moment the Dubbo junior is totally focused on his football.

"My goal is to be in the (top) side week in, week out," he said. "Physically I am in the best shape that I have ever been in and I am keen to get out there and give it my best.

"Saturday night is very crucial. It is the last chance to put my hand up for round one. I am not sure how much time I will get, but while I am out there I will definitely be doing everything I can to show Carty that I am not only ready for first grade, but a regular first grade spot."

Saturday night may be a trial, but the competition for almost every Titans position has raised the stakes.

Conn predicted a far from soft outing.

"Aggression in defence is something that Carty likes," says Conn.

"You get a fair bit of that style of footy playing in the bush and aggression in defence is something I really want to work on."

Conn, 22, is hungry to make up for lost time after missing most of 2007 with ankle and wrist injuries.

He ended up playing eight games for the Titans in the latter part of the season when the Gold Coast team was on the slide.

"I seemed to have missed all the big games last year," he said. "That is still at the back of my mind. I don't want to be the guy sitting on the sideline. That is the worst feeling in the world, just sitting there watching the boys."

Despite loving the Gold Coast and enjoying the modelling limelight, Conn says he is still 'all country'.

He grew up on a 2000 hectare sheep and cattle property and says he could easily go back to that lifestyle.

"Funnily enough the reason I like the Gold Coast is because people here are similar to the bush, very easy-going, friendly and laid back," he said.

"The only difference is the lack of space. You can't just grab your dogs and go chasing pigs.

"In fact, all I have is a balcony, so I can't even have a dog.

"I am thinking of getting one of those Savannah cats (a large domestic cat that can weigh up to 20kgs). One of those might look good in the back of my ute." Read more GC Bulletin
