HALTON FARNWORTH HORNETS ARLFC

May I take the opportunity to introduce to you, the Halton Farnworth Hornets?

They are a local amateur rugby league club based at Wilmere Lane Sports Ground, Widnes.

Having a history going back some thirty three years, the 'Hornets' operate teams ranging from Under 7's to Open Age.

This letter is sent on behalf of the Under 15 age group.

The team has been invited to run an end of season rugby tour to the Czech Republic.

The Rugby Football League (RFL) and Czech Republic Rugby League Development are backing this initiative. The tour will involve playing a friendly game against their Development side, and to assist with teaching, training and coaching their players.

This will be undertaken by qualified HFH coaches, with the assistance of the HFH players.

This is a cultural exchange trip, with Czech Republic Rugby League Development attempting to raise the profile of amateur rugby league in the country. Halton Farnworth Hornets are breaking new grounds, venturing to the Czech Republic, and will be first North West amateur rugby league club to do so.

As you can imagine, the costs involved in a rugby tour of this nature are high. As a voluntary run community sporting organisation, funding of the club relies purely on player's weekly subscriptions. There are no other forms of income.

To this end, the HFH Club are seeking sponsorship, however large or small, to assist with the costs involved. The idea is to ensure that all HFH U15's squad players are able to go on the tour at zero cost to them. This can only be done by raising the necessary funds to enable them to benefit from this opportunity.

The HFH Club would like to offer in return for your sponsorship assistance, one of three things as follows:

1. Any sponsorship under £50 will receive a space in the official tour programme which will be displayed at the club house for all to see and peruse at anytime.

2. Any sponsorship between £50 and £100 would get the above plus an A4 size poster advertising your company. This will be displayed on the 22nd March at a fund raising event for all to see and then at the HFH club house.

3. Any sponsorship over £100 would receive both the above, plus on the 22nd March, the HFH U15's parents will be holding a 'Race Night' event to be staged at the Widnes recreational Club, Liverpool Road, Widnes.

The HFH U15's parents would offer you in return for your kind sponsorship, free entry for up to ten people (booked in advance), reserved seating, waitress service and sponsorship for one of the eight races on the evening.

The HFH Club and HFH U15's would be grateful to receive any donations, raffle prizes or sponsorships which could assist in anyway what so ever.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and we hope to hear from you soon.

Leeds and St Helens lead the way in producing England-qualified players By Ian Laybourn - Rugby Football League chief executive Nigel Wood has confirmed that Leeds and St Helens lead the way when it comes to producing England-qualified players.

The figures released at the official launch of the engage Super League at Old Trafford show that the two sides who contested last year's Grand Final rely less on foreign players.

This year's competition will see a 12% increase in the number of home-grown players, while the number of overseas players has dropped by six per cent to 29% following the introduction of a new club-trained player rule.

All but five of the Rhinos' 24-man squad are eligible to play for England in this year's World Cup, while Saints could provide 21 out of their 27-strong squad.

At the other end of the scale, Hull KR have 11 overseas players in their 26-man squad.

"It is fantastic that in World Cup year that so many of our top sides are built around young English talent," Wood said.

"Not only are they getting the opportunity to play at the highest level but they're also benefiting from playing alongside and opposite some of the best overseas players in the world such as Trent Barrett and Matt King.

"This will not only aid their personal development but will further boost the national team."

Figures also released today show that eight of the 12 Super League clubs are likely to reach the maximum spend under the salary cap this year, compared to just three in 2002.

League officials predict that in 12 months' time all clubs will have reached the maximum £1.65million, which created a further levelling of standards across the competition.

"The one word you can't use to describe engage Super League is predictable," said Wood.

"Compared to other sports, you can't predict the results that will happen each week and it's virtually impossible to guess the six teams who will make the end of season play-offs.

"New clubs are breaking into the top six and the gap between all 12 clubs is closing which is delivering great contests." Read more

Broncos aim for top four spot By Steve Ricketts - Brisbane Test centre Justin Hodges says any suggestion 2008 will be a rebuilding year for the NRL's most successful team is a cop-out.

Hodges said yesterday nothing short of a top-four finish would satisfy him and the Broncos would be gunning for Melbourne's top spot.

At the start of a new four-year deal with Brisbane, Hodges says he is refreshed and physically at his peak after a 2007 season which finished with his withdrawal from the Australian team with an ankle injury.

Now 25, Hodges is part of the Broncos' leadership group and he accepts that even more responsibility will fall on his shoulders following the off-season departure of internationals Petero Civoniceva, Brad Thorn, Shaun Berrigan, Brent Tate and Dane Carlaw.

"I think the club is capable of doing really well this year," Hodges said.

"If anyone here says it's a rebuilding year I think it's an excuse to try to make yourself not feel so bad when you lose games.

"We've lost some great players but we've also gained some great players and we want to get back into the top one or two spots leading into the finals, and certainly in the top four."

Asked if the Broncos were capable of challenging Melbourne for premiership supremacy, Hodges said: "I think Melbourne is still the team to beat and we're looking forward to playing them. They're always great battles when we meet. Winning the grand final last year was something special for them and they probably deserved it.

"(But) this year everyone will be trying to knock them off, especially us."

Hodges said he was excited about the contribution recruits such as Peter Wallace, PJ Marsh, Joel Clinton, Ashton Sims and Tom Hewitt could bring to the side but he realised established combinations would be crucial.

"It's important for me and 'Locky' (skipper Darren Lockyer) and 'K' (Karmichael Hunt) to still have our thing there," Hodges said.

"Shane Perry is still at the club and hopefully we can strike up a combination with him and Peter Wallace."

After four years at the Broncos - interrupted by three years at the Sydney Roosters - Hodges said he was hungry for more milestones.

"I love the club and there are a lot more things I want to achieve here," he said. "I still owe the club heaps and I'm trying to repay them.

"On the field I will try to let my football do the talking more than trying to tell the guys what to do. That's more Locky's job than mine. I'm in the leadership group but I'll still try to be relaxed and not be too much of a Nazi." Read more

Brett Stewart's saga drags on By Margie McDonald - The saga of Brett Stewart's re-signing with Manly will drag on for at least another week despite the Australia full-back insisting he doesn't want to leave the club.

Stewart, who joined his brother Glenn and Steve Menzies at the launch of the 2008 Manly jersey, said he hoped his new contract would be signed well before the club's opening trial game, a grand final re-match against Melbourne, in Gosford on February 15.

"I certainly hope so," said the 22-year-old who scored 19 tries for the Sea Eagles last season, 10 of them at Brookvale Oval. "There's no problem. My manager went away for about eight weeks. He gets back this week so there'll be a fair bit of work done in the next week or two."

Manly is looking to sign Stewart to at least a four-year deal. His older brother Glenn was signed last year to a new three-year contract.

"There's a few little pieces to sort out but we're pretty confident we can have things cleared up quickly," Manly chief executive Grant Mayer said.

Stewart's contract negotiations have dragged on since last November when Mayer had insisted a new deal was ready to be finalised.

"Well, the holidays delayed everything, but we've got a good enough relationship with both (manager) George (Mimis) and Brett to be comfortable about where things are."

Manly coach Des Hasler is one waiting in the wings until Stewart is signed before putting pen to paper on a new three-year deal.

"Des is Dessie," Mayer said. "He has always wanted to get the players done first and it's important for his stability to get that done."

Hasler, who put his players through a tough session of sprints and ball work in humid conditions Tuesday in Sydney, had no doubts the Stewart deal would be announced soon.

"He's close. He's going to be a really important part of this club's future," Hasler said.

"With me, we're still in discussion but going forward."

Meanwhile, Menzies said 2008 might not be his last season. He might go around for a 17th in 2009.

"I love the physical side of training and feel great. As long as my brain stays focused I could well be playing again next year, or I could be digging trenches," Menzies said.

Manly will play Melbourne in two weeks without hooker Michael Monagahan (Warrington), winger Chris Hicks (Warrington) and utility Travis Burns (Cowboys). But the new recruits, prop Josh Perry (Newcastle) and hooker Heath L'Estrange (Roosters), have joined the squad.

L'Estrange, Matt Ballin and regular lock Luke Williamson were all vying for the hooker's spot, Hasler said.

Missing from the Gosford match due to ongoing injury rehabilitation will be the Stewart brothers, New Zealand centre Steve Matai and prop George Rose. Read more

NZRL confident about Wayne Bennett By Sam Worthington - The New Zealand Rugby League remains confident of attracting Wayne Bennett to the vacant Kiwis coaching position despite an apparent communication breakdown between the two parties.

Brisbane Broncos coach Bennett has repeatedly expressed his interest in reviving the Kiwis' flagging World Cup fortunes but said on Saturday that he had not heard from the NZRL for more than a week.

Speaking on Bennett's behalf yesterday, Broncos managing director Bruno Cullen told The Dominion Post that nothing had changed.

"There's not much use talking about it until there's something on the table, and there's nothing on the table yet," Cullen said.

But NZRL chairman Ray Haffenden was playing down fears the silence could cool Bennett's interest and was confident the Australian would be on board by "the end of the week".

Haffenden said he and NZRL general manager Peter Cordtz would meet Bennett's request to discuss terms face to face.

"We'll be flying to Brisbane sometime before the end of the week," Haffenden said.

"I haven't got a time set yet but we will be and when we come back let's hope we've got it all sorted."

Asked if the NZRL had spoken to Bennett since Saturday, Haffenden replied: "everything's under control and always has been - that should give you a clue.

"There's no need to panic."

If offered the job, Bennett is believed to favour a coaching team with former Kiwis captain Stephen Kearney as his assistant coach and is keen to get greats Ruben Wiki and Stacey Jones on board in some capacity.

Haffenden refuted a suggestion that Bennett would be calling the shots in who would be appointed.

"We haven't been anywhere near Wayne to discuss any personnel," he said.

"Friday or Saturday, whenever we get it sorted, we'll have all the people that we'd like involved and they will know where they stand."

Kearney is not commenting on a potential role with the Kiwis while Wiki has ruled out a playing comeback. stuff.co.nz

Maitland Griffins turn out to support return to paddock
The club's new coach had already made his intentions public, so it was important that prospective East Maitland rugby league players turned out in force to support the club's push to return to the field in 2008.

And Griffins secretary Jennean Bates was pleased to report that 16 players signed with the club at the first official combined gathering of its committee and players on Sunday.

Bates said it was a great response from the players, as the club continues to work hard off the field to ensure it is part of the 2008 Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League season.

"We had players of all ages sign up, with the youngest being 19 I think, and the oldest was 43," Bates said.

"There was more that wanted to come but couldn't make it because of work and other commitments."

Griffins coach Chris Skelton took time to talk to those players that attended and map out the kind of commitment he expected throughout the season.

Training begins tonight at East Maitland Park for all players with a second session to be held on Thursday.

Bates said the days set out for training would probably vary in the pre-season, with Skelton looking to accommodate shift workers.

The Griffins have nominated to play in C-grade of the NHRL competition, but pre-season trials run by the NHRL will dictate whether they remain there when the season begins. Maitland Mercury

"Rugby league is a simple game; it's just very hard to play!" - Brian 'Bluey' McClennan - The words of Brian 'Bluey' McClennan at his first post-match press conference as Leeds head coach signalled the start of a new era at Headingley and with it came a breath of fresh air.

Cliches and platitudes have become the norm since the game at its elite level became so clinical. For professional, read dispassionate.

Tony Smith will be remembered as one of the most successful coaches in Leeds' history, with two league titles in his four seasons.

He is a likeable enough fella and has made a magnificent start to his job as national coach, but he just doesn't do excitement.

McClennan, on the other hand, oozes charisma and personality and, what is more, he tells it how it is.

Although the former New Zealand boss is the new kid on the coaching block for Super League XIII and has no previous experience at elite club level, his CV includes a 24-0 final victory over Australia in 2005, when his inspirational qualities were proven beyond doubt.

Leeds have no new additions to their playing squad for 2008 but McClennan could prove to be the most shrewd signing of all.

Only St Helens have successfully defended a Super League crown but the Rhinos look equipped to follow suit, although they face a potential banana skin in Saturday's opening fixture against Hull KR as they come down from a Hollywood high.

Fresh from rubbing shoulders with Academy award-winning actor Russell Crowe on the other side of the Atlantic at the weekend, Leeds have little time to adjust to the real world and it could take all of McClennan's guile to get his men up for the task.

Saints are the bookmakers' second favourites and, smarting from their 33-6 hammering in October's Grand Final, will certainly be among the main players, especially in coach Daniel Anderson's last season at the helm.

But St Helens are an ageing team, with six thirty-somethings in their first XIII, and a long, hard season could take its toll.

Much could depend on the contribution of Paul Sculthorpe as he attempts his latest comeback, setting out to prove he is worth another contract in November.

The biggest challengers to the big two should be Bradford, who surprised many pundits in their first season under Steve McNamara and have recruited wisely for 2008, and big-spending Warrington.

The Wolves have threatened to make the big breakthrough for the last three years and, with the signing of Matt King, it is surely time for them to deliver.

It was interesting to see that Harlequins' Brian McDermott is the bookmakers' fancy to become the first Super League coach to get the sack this year but, with no relegation as the game prepares to issue three-year licences for a 14-team Super League from 2009, clubs are more likely to show patience if their teams struggle.

Instead, the focus will be on the top six and Warrington coach Paul Cullen is the man under most pressure as fans' expectations are raised to new heights.

The coach under the least pressure in 2008 will be Castleford's Terry Matterson, whose side were so unlucky to be relegated in his first season two years ago.

He remained loyal, steering the Tigers back from threatened oblivion, and now, without fear of relegation, has the chance to lay a platform.

In all probability, Castleford will finish bottom of the table but Matterson will get the chance to use the wooden spoon to stir the pot for a brighter future. Read more

Chris Siddons signs with Castleford Tigers - Following their recent recruitment of six local junior stars, Castleford Tigers have added a seventh this week with the capture of 16-year-old back row forward Chris Siddons.

Chris, who is from Castleford, has played the majority of his junior rugby at Castleford Lock Lane, moving to Smawthorne Panthers to play U16 rugby.

He has represented Wakefield service area at Under-15's and is one of the most improved players in the area over the last two seasons. Chris is the third player to be signed from the clubs successful Scholarship Scheme and his signing highlights the outstanding work of the Tigers scholarship coaches at all age groups.

Head Scout Kevin McGuire said: "Chris has been rewarded for his hard work and dedication. He has showed loyalty to the club he has always supported, having turned down an approach from at least one other Super League club.

"His capture, following that of the six youngsters last week is testimony to the clubs Scholarship Scheme as we see the 'fruits' of their efforts coming through."

The Tigers Scholarship Scheme runs coaching sessions once a week for the U13 to U16 age groups and players are selected through the clubs identification process. Castleford Online

Assistant York City Knights' boss throws down gauntlet ahead of cup tie By Steve Carroll - James Ratcliffe hopes York City Knights' collection of misfits will want to prove a point in Sunday's Northern Rail Cup opener against Gateshead.

The assistant coach said he has described the players as "mongrels" because so many of them have, at one time or another, been left on rugby league's scrapheap.

But he hopes their determination to succeed after being given a second chance in the game will shine through - starting against Thunder at Huntington Stadium.

"We've brought a group of players from many different clubs and I've described the players as mongrels'. We've got people who've either been discarded or told they are not going to make it and they have been given an opportunity here," Ratcliffe said.

"You want hungry people to come and play because it's a hungry game - it's an attitude game, rugby league. If we don't have that attitude, or that hunger, then we are not going to succeed and that's what we've been saying to the players."

Summing up a pre-season which saw the Knights fail to win, but put in a hugely encouraging performance against Super League giants Wakefield, Ratcliffe added: "As regards the pre-season games, against the York Select we were against a passionate side and against Wakefield we probably played to our full potential - regarding putting some set plays in.

"We asked for a better defensive effort against Leeds regarding the time we spend technically on the floor and in the tackle. Some of that came through in the first half (against Leeds) but in the second it boiled down to frustration. We weren't getting the rub of the green. This is when you find out who your true winners are and who wants the game."

Training this week may likely concentrate on goal-kicking, an area where Knights were abysmal in the 28-26 Leeds loss.

Only Lee Mapals, with the final kick of the match, managed to negotiate the ball through the uprights - with York converting just one of their six attempts.

Ratcliffe said: "That's an area we need to look at. If we had kicked the goals we would have won the game. We only kicked one all day and sometimes it matters. Sometimes it doesn't but against Leeds it was an example that it did."

But despite the Leeds setback, Rhinos academy coach Willie Poaching still reckons York could have what it takes to succeed in National League Two.

"York will go very close this year with some good experience up front," he said. "They've got some good players across the park and Lee Mapals was hard to handle. They'll go a long way and they might even pinch it." The Press

Brisbane Broncos winger Jharal Yow Yeh one to watch - By Wayne Heming - Teenage Brisbane Broncos winger Jharal Yow Yeh has a family pedigree to suggest he could be a player to watch.

His great uncle Kevin Yow Yeh was a Thursday Islander blessed with electrifying speed who started his rugby league career in the centres in country Roma alongside Arthur Beetson.

The pair joined Balmain in 1966, Beetson going onto to become one of the greats of the game and Yow Yee playing 41 first grade over two seasons including the 1966 losing grand final to St George before sadly disappearing from the rugby league landscape.

His nephew Jharal is tall and skinny with genuine speed, balance and footwork according to new Broncos football manager Peter Nolan.

"He's pretty quick, maybe not the quickest to come through the club but he's still developing," said Nolan.

Yow Yeh has been named in a young Brisbane Broncos side to play the Central Comets at Theodore Sports Ground on Saturday week.

The 18-man squad also includes hooker Nathan Strudwick, the son of former Valleys and Queensland halfback Ross Strudwick and teenager Ben Hunt who was the Australian Schoolboys halfback last year.

Yow Yeh hails from Brisbane and plays for Brisbane Norths.

Another interesting youngster in the 18-man squad, and one who's already turning heads, is big second-rower Palmer Wapua.

Wapua, who has an array of skills, played alongside Matt Bowen when they attended Abergowrie College together.

None of Brisbane's new recruits will debut against the Comets but they should all be on show in two trials the following week against the Cowboys in north Queensland and against Queensland Cup side Wynnum Manly in Brisbane.

The Brisbane Broncos squad to play the Central Queensland Comets at Theodore Sports and Recreation Grounds on February 9 is: Josh Hoffman, Jharal Yow Yeh, Alex Glenn, William Tupou, Brendon Gibb, Tim Yee, Ben Hunt, Ryan Barton, Cameron Joyce, Jason Williams, Palmer Wapau, Derrick Watkins, Michael Spence. Res: Nathan Strudwick, Guy Ford, Leon Panapa, Wiremu Ratana, Matt Handcock. Brisbane Times

Widnes Viking's chairman Steve O'Connor says keep up your super support - Widnes Viking's chairman Steve O'Connor claims crowd support will be a key element in any successful Super League license application.

On Sunday more than 5,000 fans turned out for Widnes Vikings' friendly fixture against Wigan Warriors - an attendance which was bigger than the Warriors' clash with Bradford Bulls a week earlier.

Although Steve McCormack's young Widnes outfit were put to the sword by Brian Noble's talented team the club claims the game has sent a message to the world of rugby league that Widnes is back in business.

O'Connor said: "I think it's apparent to everyone the massive transformation that has taken place here over the last couple of months. A successful Super League License Application will be largely dependent on the demonstrating to the Rugby Football League that we can attract supporters in sufficient numbers to merit a license.

"The turn-out on Sunday was very encouraging and we must build on that and try to attract more people to watch our National League 1 fixtures than we had last season."

Halton Borough Council Leader Cllr Tony McDermott said: "It's great news that Vikings have attracted 5,151 people here for a friendly fixture.

"And this when the match is being played at the same time that Manchester United are playing Spurs in an FA Cup match broadcast on BBC television.

"This is a good crowd and we must build on this if we are to make a successful application to get in Super League."

"Renaissance is a really overworked word but what Steve O'Connor has achieved here in a few short months is quite staggering. It is a renaissance. You just have to look at the new facilities provided at the stadium for the players and the Press. It's really very heartening."

Meanwhile McCormack is poised to make a swoop for two of Wigan's most promising youngsters who played a big role in the Vikings' defeat last weekend.

The club is remaining tight-lipped about the identities of the duo but the Vikings could have them on board in time for the start of the National League One season.

Meanwhile, Wigan coach Brian Noble admitted the game will have done his side a great deal of good as they prepare to embark on the new league campaign at Harlequins on Saturday week.

"It was a good test for us," Noble continued. "There were a few things we needed to iron out and we did that.

"Widnes were a tough side, and it was less than friendly at times. That's why I don't like to call these games friendlies."

One of the unsavoury incidents Noble was alluding to led to Widnes prop Iain Morrison making a biting allegation, while Warriors hooker Mick McIlorum and Vikings winger Dean Gaskell were sin-binned for brawling a few minutes later.

Neither Noble nor Widnes coach Steve McCormack would be drawn on the biting allegation, which was put on report by referee Gareth Hewer and which the RFL will look into early this week. Liverpool Daily Post

NZ Alliance competitions axed due to NZRL cost-cutting By Michael Brown - The NZRL has pulled out of funding the Alliance competitions and there's a real threat the provincial competitions could be next.

The news comes on the back of the disestablishment of Graham Lowe's position as director of football, even though he was only eight months into a three-year contract.

The national body has said this was done for financial reasons, given they are facing an estimated $1.25 million loss for 2007, but it's understood Lowe will be asked to organise the Kiwis' World Cup campaign.

Whether he will want to do this after the criticism directed his way and the NZRL's handling of recent events is debatable. Lowe didn't return calls yesterday.

There was growing dissatisfaction within the NZRL with Lowe's outspokenness over the Gary Kemble affair and this might have hastened his departure as director of football.

A number of districts are upset after the NZRL withdrew funding for the Alliance competitions. The NZRL forked out $400,000 last year for these regional competitions, which involve clubs from areas that can't sustain their own meaningful club competitions.

NZRL general manager Peter Cordtz said the decision was reached because of the level of debt the organisation is facing and especially after trusts such as the Lion Foundation have suspended their support of the sport.

"They have turned the tap off so it would be irresponsible of us to spend money we don't have," Cordtz said.

Sponsors and gaming trusts are nervous about the state of the NZRL and there is widespread speculation the provincial competitions will also be canned this year.

Cordtz said they had encouraged organisers of Alliance competitions to seek their own funding from gaming trusts. Read more

Knights lure code rivals Newcastle Jets By Barry Toohey - Newcastle Knights will kick off a major advertising campaign on Sunday to attract season ticket sales as the city's love affair with football code rivals Newcastle Jets continues to soar.

Only seven weeks out from the start of the NRL season, the Knights' pre-season build-up has been shunted into the background for most fans by the Jets' surge towards their first A-League grand final appearance.

As unthinkable as it may once have been, the Knights now have a legitimate rival for the hearts and minds of the Newcastle sporting public.

A crowd of almost 23,000 witnessed the Jets' pulsating 2-0 semi-final first-leg win over Central Coast on Sunday, bettered only once last season by the Knights when the club farewelled champion halfback Andrew Johns.

Sales of Jets merchandise is at an all-time high with major retail outlet Rebel, the official suppliers for the A-League, claiming Jets gear easily out-sold Knights merchandise in its Charlestown store.

"It is not easy to break it down but we would probably sell between 30 and 40 per cent more Jets gear than Knights gear," Rebel assistant manager Matt Dunn said.

"But you have to remember the Knights have their own merchandise store at the stadium and it is also available at other outlets so it is hard to make a comparison."

But far from viewing the Jets as a rival, Knights boss Steve Burraston insists their success is a positive for the town and his club.

Burraston claimed fans will never be forced to choose between the two because their seasons don't overlap.

"We are thrilled for the Jets and the season they are having," Burraston said.

"I was at the game (on Sunday) and really enjoyed it and went back to the club with Con (Jets owner Con Constantine) afterwards.

"There is a good relationship there.

"I don't view it as us being in competition with them.

"It's a positive in the sense that people get used to coming here (EnergyAustralia Stadium) to go to the footy.

The Briscoe boys sign with Hull FC - Hull, who said goodbye to one Briscoe at the end of last season, have welcomed two more to the KC Stadium.

The east Yorkshire club have signed teenage brothers Tom and Jack Briscoe - they are no relation to former full-back Shaun Briscoe - on three and two-year deals respectively.

Tom, 17, who has scored five tries in the club's three pre-season trial games, is a centre or winger while Jack, 16, is a full-back or winger. Both are from the Featherstone Juniors amateur club.

Hull coach Peter Sharp said: "These boys are two of the most exciting prospects in the game and I can see both having big futures."

The Briscoe boys will be the second set of brothers at Hull, where Richard and Graeme Horne are established regulars. Read more

Singledom suits Broncos' bucks - The bachelor ranks at the Brisbane Broncos are a little healthier than first suspected - and the boys are keen to make it public.

Last week Qconfidential reported that Karmichael Hunt and David Taylor were the last remaining single guys at the club but while David is not married, we are informed he is in a serious relationship.

"His girlfriend wasn't too happy when she read that her boyfriend was single," said a club source. But while the Rockhampton rhino is off the market, there is still a surplus of single bucks waiting to be snapped up.

Peter Wallace, Sam Thaiday, Joel Clinton, Rodney Davies, Steve Michaels and Joel Moon are all officially on the market.

And there is some brains behind that brawn. Steve and Joel both completed a Certificate 4 in business last year and when Sammy isn't carving up the field (or the dancefloor at the Normanby) he is into tracing his family origins. Read more

Super-charged Celtic Crusaders stun Harlequins By Simon Kendal-Williams - Celtic Crusaders wrote another chapter in their short, successful history with a thoroughly deserved victory over Super League giants Harlequins.

And having watched his side outplay, outmuscle and outclass their much-vaunted opponents, coach John Dixon was positively purring with pride.

"We scored some wonderful tries," he said. "But we also conceded just the one against a Super League side, which is a superb effort.

"There wasn't one poor performance out there for us, but I've got to give special mention to the kids.

"We were missing three regulars before the start, and lost a couple more early on, so it shows the depth of our squad.

"Tom Burnell, Ben Flower and Chris Vitalini are young men who have never played anywhere near this level in their lives, so to come out and be so competitive was outstanding.

"If they can go out there and be as technically good and physically committed against quality opposition as they were today, then it bodes well for the season ahead of us."

On the field, Dixon has the task of maintaining the momentum which saw his team romp to the National League Two title last year in only their third year in existence.

But just as crucial is the work going on behind the scenes to bring Super League rugby to the Principality by next year.

The first stage of the club's application must be submitted in May, Dixon says defeating an established side from rugby's elite will do the Crusaders' cause no harm at all.

"We'll certainly have a very strong case to put to the RFL to bring Super League rugby to Wales," said the Aussie coach.

"If today is any marker, then there's certainly a case to say this team can be competitive in that league."

Rugby league legend Paul is in full agreement.

"The Super League franchise should have happened 10 years ago," said the 33-year old.

"But now it's perfect for the game down in Wales.

"If they have a good team, then the crowds will come. I hope they do get a franchise."

Dixon added: "We're not opposition to rugby union - we can complement each other.

"You've got your Ospreys, Dragons Blues and Scarlets in the winter, and they're sensational.

"But in the summer, come and watch the Crusaders play, because we're part of it." South Wales Echo

Sculthorpe brothers get set for testimonial showdown - St Helens captain Paul Sculthorpe is preparing for a testimonial showdown against Wakefield Wildcats and his younger brother Danny this weekend.

The match takes place at Knowsley Road on Saturday February 2nd and will see the Sculthorpe brothers - arguably rugby league's most famous siblings - take each other on as a celebration of Paul Sculthorpe's tenth year in Super League.

The fixture has been granted to the Saints skipper by the Rugby Football League (RFL) in order to promote the baby charity Tommy's, but will also provide an early look at two of the main playoff contenders this year.

And Paul Sculthorpe, who is one of Great Britain's most decorated international players, said it was an added bonus to be meeting his younger brother on the field.

"I can't wait for Saturday - it will be a great occasion for my testimonial match, and with the opposition being Wakefield it obviously means Danny will be lining up against me, which makes it extra special," he said.

"He's had a superb pre-season already and I know he'll be keen for Wakefield's good results to continue.

"I've said before that I came to St Helens to win trophies and develop as a rugby league player, and I've certainly done that.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time so far at the club and it's an honour to celebrate my testimonial season at Knowsley Road."

Danny Sculthorpe said he is looking forward to running out alongside his elder brother for the game, which he believes is Wakefield's chance to put down a marker for the season ahead.

"Like Paul, I'm really excited about the occasion," he said.

"We've shown good form in pre-season and St Helens will be another big test for us but we're up for the challenge.

"I'm delighted to be playing a part, literally, in Paul's big day and he deserves everything that he has achieved in the game.

"He's a tremendous ambassador for the sport and an inspiration to many people in rugby league, and I'm very proud of his success." inthenews.co.uk

Sellout impresses organizers  - By Justin Hathaway, The Times-Union - As the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Leeds Rhinos started flying to their respective homes Sunday, Australia Day Challenge officials remained pleased about how the Rugby League exhibition game went off the previous day.

Drawing an over-capacity crowd to the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium despite cold, rainy weather. Australia Day Challenge better than we expected

"It was obviously better than we expected," said Daryl Howland, organizer of the Australia Day Challenge and coach and co-owner of the local Rugby League team, the Jacksonville Axemen.

"We thought a sellout of 10,000 [would happen], We had contingency plans to let more people in, and as you see, we did that. Obviously, we were very happy."

Howland said about 12,500 people watched the Rhinos beat the Rabbitohs 26-24, and that merchandise sales were hot, even if the weather was not.

"Some items of merchandise did sell out," he said. "The hats, for instance, sold out. The hooded sweatshirts and beanies sold out."

The game also drew many sports celebrities, including golfer Greg Norman and his fiancee, former tennis great Chris Evert; ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman; recently retired Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr; Muhammad Ali's longtime trainer, Angelo Dundee; and Australian women's surfing champion Layne Beachley.

Whether the Rabbitohs and/or Rhinos will return to Jacksonville anytime soon isn't clear, and Australia Day Challenge officials were still busy Sunday wrapping up the event.

However, Academy Award-winning actor and Rabbitohs co-owner Russell Crowe told the Sydney Morning Herald that the First Coast remains in the mix - albeit with some competition - should the team decide on another overseas exhibition game in the future.

"We've had conversations with other cities, and there is a lot of interest in us playing in those places," Crowe said.

"Jacksonville has been fantastic, and obviously it is a sports town, so that weighs heavily in Jacksonville's favor ... but we've got some pretty heavy hitters who are interested in having a game in their backyard as well. At the moment, that interest is coming from cities on the West Coast and cities in the middle of America." The Times-Union

Morley brothers sign for Bulls - First they had the Paul brothers then more recently the Burgess boys and now Bradford Bulls have signed up a pair of Morley teenagers who are being tipped to have a big future in rugby league.

Brothers Andrew and Michael Tate, who are both pupils at Morley High School, are the latest talented juniors to join Bradford as the club steps up its bid to secure the stars of the future.

The Bulls beat off strong competition from Leeds Rhinos to sign the highly rated duo who are both back row forwards and whose father, Phil, is on the coaching staff at Odsal.

Each has come through the Rhinos scholarship scheme, but turned down Leeds' offers of professional contracts to make the switch to the Grattan Stadium.

Andrew, 16, is 10 months older than Michael, 15, and has starred for England Schoolboys, but Michael is also tipped to win international honours in the near future.

Bulls boss Steve McNamara is delighted to have captured the Morley duo, who have also played junior rugby with Hunslet Warriors.
He said: "It's great news that we've managed to sign both these players.

"Andrew has been the star performer in terms of selection for national squads and grabbing the headlines. He is a superb player and has all the attributes. He's already six foot three and has been likened to Jamie Peacock by people at Leeds and ourselves.

"It's hard to throw a label at someone like that, but he is an outstanding individual. He's a smart kid, but has that ability to be aggressive on the pitch and we have high, high hopes for him.

"Michael has had to live slightly in the shadow of his older brother. He's six foot one-and-a-half and is nearly a full year behind in terms of physical development, but that hasn't prevented him performing.

"He's a strong young boy and if ever a player is determined to succeed and do whatever is required to be the best he can, then it is Michael. They are great acquisitions for us."

Andrew highlighted just what it would mean for him to be pulling on a Bulls shirt.

He said: "It's amazing to be able to sign for a club like Bradford Bulls and for us both to join at the same time is even better.
"We know there's a lot of hard work ahead, but we want to become Super League players and are ready to do what is needed."

Bradford's Great Britain ace Sam Burgess is someone both youngsters look up to.

"My dad used to coach him at Hunslet Parkside," Andrew explained. "We were only under 11s at the time and used to be water boys for the under 16s when Sam played. Seeing how successful he's been, despite being so young, is a real inspiration."

Michael, meanwhile, is looking forward to working under the watchful eye of McNamara.

"The first time we met him he came to our house to talk to us," he said.

"It was a shock to see him sat on the sofa, but he came to speak to us regularly and that was a big factor in helping us decide to sign for the club." Morley Observer

Celtic Crusaders recommend Ryan Barton to Broncos By Steve Ricketts - Wagga product Ryan Barton has been signed by the Broncos on the basis of his performances for Welsh club Celtic Crusaders.

The former Canberra Raiders lower grader was recommended to the Broncos by former coaching staff member John Dixon who is now in charge of the Crusaders in the British second division.

Barton has been named at prop along with another former Canberra player, Jason Williams, for the Broncos' first trial of the year against Central Comets at Theodore on Saturday week.

At 22, Barton has just completed his Bachelor of Science degree and is looking for a job.

"I'm in debt to John Dixon for putting in a good word for me," Barton said. "I've got a joint contract with the Broncos and Norths in the Queensland Cup and I hope to make the most of my chance."

Barton has been one of the Broncos' best trainers and was brought into the squad for the Theodore trip after Ipswich signing Isaak Ah Mau broke down with a calf muscle tear.

The Broncos squad for Theodore is made up largely of under-20 players or players from Queensland Cup affiliates such as Wynnum-Manly where Williams is contracted.

Centre William Tupou is a former Australian Schoolboys rugby union star while halfback Ben Hunt from Yeppoon toured New Zealand with the Australian Schoolboys league side last year.

Lock Michael Spence, 18, has been recruited from Coffs Harbour where he earned Country colts representation last year.

Penrith recruit Peter Wallace has a hamstring strain but expects to be available for the trial against North Queensland in Rockhampton on February 16.

The Broncos' other trials are against Canberra at Orange on February 23 and Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval on March 1.

The competition opens on the weekend of March 14 to 17.

All three Queensland NRL clubs are represented in Sydney at the annual rookie camp which started yesterday.

The camp will address issues from business networking and career development to the responsible use of alcohol and the dangers of illicit drugs. Presenters include Jason Stevens, Ben Ikin, Ron Coote, Brad Mackay, Michael Buettner, Greg Florimo and Billy Moore.

Broncos team to play Central Comets at Theodore on February 9: Josh Hoffman; Jharal Yow Yeh, Alex Glenn, Willie Tupou, Brendon Gibb; Tim Yee, Ben Hunt; Ryan Barton, Cameron Joyce, Jason Williams, Palmer Wapau, Derrick Watkins, Michael Spence. Res: Nathan Strudwick, Guy Ford, Leon Panapa, Wiremu Ratana, Matt Handcock. Coach Anthony Griffin. Read more

Semi Tadulala hurt, out of action Fijian Semi Tadulala who is a target for the Bati for the Rugby League World Cup has suffered a set back as he has been ruled of action for six weeks.

Tadulala who has joined Bradford Bulls in England this year underwent surgery on Friday, but remains confident.

Having twice broken his arm last year, Tadulala has not enjoyed much luck of late but he refuses to wallow in self-pity.

"After what happened last season, I know I just have to stay positive," Tadulala said.

"I was a little disappointed straight after the game but by the time I left the dressing room I'd got over it.

"It's gone now and there's nothing I can do about it. I've just got to look up rather than feel sorry for myself as that won't help anyone.

"I'll be out for four to six weeks, depending on how quickly I heal, and am just looking forward to getting back in the Bulls jersey."

Tadulala, playing his third pre-season game, had been Bradford's most impressive performer against Wigan.

He notched his first try for the club with a barnstorming effort that illustrated both the pace and power that attracted boss Steve McNamara to his services.

Tadulala said: "I really enjoyed it out there. I was making my debut at Odsal and feeling good about the whole afternoon until the injury but overall I was happy.

"Even when I was on my way to hospital I was still smiling. I'm not going to beat myself up over it and had a good time out there, especially to be running out with the full team.

"I know we lost but for most of the players it was their first chance to blow away some cobwebs."

Tadulala suffered the injury after a typically committed challenge with Wigan winger Liam Colbon, the pair clashing heads as they rose for a high ball.

Meanwhile, Tabua Cakacaka has been tipped to be twice the player he was last season.

The big Fijian terrorised National League Two defences last year with his explosive power, but struggled for match fitness after suffering a chronic foot problem.

The injury trouble has not completely cleared but is well on its way to being resolved, and Thunder head coach Woods said that after a punishing pre-season Tabua is ready to hit his straps. Fiji Times

QRL Administrators Conference - Gold Coast February 8-10
We all know how vital a pre-season is to a rugby league team's premiership prospects. But what you might not know is just how important the administrators' version of a productive "pre-season" can be.

With a range of new topics and presenters, the QRL Administrators Conference to be held on the Gold Coast from February 8-10, will bring you up to speed quicker than your flashy winger's sprint to the try-line.

Wide Bay Division Manager Gary Dunbar has seen the benefits of the conference first hand both as a QRL employee and as a delegate. He claims the event provides club personnel with a great perspective on both traditional club operations and the methods employed by other clubs in the rugby league community.

The conference offers a mixture of topical issues presented by specialist presenters including administrative content relevant to club and local league delegates. The program finishes at lunch time on Sunday.

Along with providing a great networking opportunity, Dunbar says the conference arms participants with new ideas, knowledge and skills which can in turn "ease the burden" on hard-working Executives and Committee members.

Conference sessions begin on Saturday morning, February 9, with four streams:

* Stream 1 - Club Administration
* Stream 2 - Providing Safe Environments
* Stream 3 - Topical issues facing RL Development
* Stream 4 - LeagueNet & New Technology

The event represents a fantastic social and club networking opportunity with an optional 'Social Package' of accommodation, golf and dinner also on offer for Friday, February 8.

RLCM EXTRACT BOOK 23 - Combining Skills and Conditioning

With Alan Wilson and Hayden Knowles written by David Haynes

.................giving players long recovery breaks is important in today's training regiments, particularly when the players' bodies are taking a pounding week in and week out.

As Knowles stresses, ample recovery time also means the players will be mentally focused when other sessions come around.

"Trying to do a speed session when they're fatigued is a waste of time, years ago they had to fit everything into two nightly sessions a week which meant by the time the speed session came around the players' bodies were fatigued.

"We get more time with the players now, and subsequently our results are better than what they used to get." he said.

Something that hasn't changed too dramatically over the years is the emphasis trainers put on skill drills. The Eels are one of a growing number of clubs who try and incorporate as much skill work as possible.

"We want to put as much time into skill as we do any other facet of our game whether it be strength, speed and aerobic conditioning,"
admits Wilson.

"Skill is going to be part of everything we do, and we never want to change from that. Everyday we do strength, speed or conditioning we will do skill with it.

"We're probably limited to three of four weight sessions a week, but there is nothing really limiting us doing five or six skills sessions a week, because skill is going to be part of everything we do, and we never want to change from that..........
