England's Australian coach Tony Smith intends to be a British citizen By Ian Laybourn - England's Australian coach Tony Smith intends to demonstrate his loyalty to his employers by taking out British citizenship before the team's next match.
The former Huddersfield and Leeds boss, who enjoyed instant success as Great Britain coach, is currently on his way to Australia for a fact-finding trip ahead of October's World Cup but has plans to become a 'Pom' on his return.
Under rules introduced just over two years ago, foreigners wanting to take out British nationality must take a 45-minute citizenship test and attend a ceremony at which they swear an oath or affirmation to the Queen and make a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom.
"That will be my intention when I get back," said Smith. "Sitting the test won't be a problem but you have to hand your passport over for up to six months.
"Finding a window of six months has been difficult for me and is part of the reason for me going to Australia now.
"I'm going to get it done as soon as I get back and become a true Pom - or as close to a true Pom as I can."
Smith, who celebrates his 41st birthday while in Australia, has spent the last eight years in England after originally paying his own air fare to attend an interview at Huddersfield, where he still lives with his wife and two children.
He is the second Australian to coach Great Britain but avoided the acrimony experienced by compatriot David Waite after convincing his critics that he has the English game at heart.
And Smith has discovered a Midas touch, guiding an experimental Great Britain side to a 42-14 mid-season win over France in his first match in charge and then, after going full-time, masterminding a first series whitewash of New Zealand for 14 years.
He has since taken on the additional role of technical director for the Rugby Football League, working out of Red Hall on the outskirts of Leeds, and has seen his team change from Great Britain to England, although he expects little change in playing personnel.
Smith raised a few eyebrows with his selection of former Samoan rugby union international Maurie Fa'asavalu, but insists that was a "one-off", and does not intend to follow the path of his rugby union counterpart Brian Ashton, who has chosen ex-league favourite and Kiwi international Lesley Vainikolo in his Six Nations squad.
"Maurie was pretty much a one-off," said Smith. "He had never played rugby league for any other country except England. There isn't anybody in the same sort of circumstances.
"I wouldn't be tempted to do that with an Australian who has been here for a long time. That has never been in my radar and is never likely to be."
Accompanied by new England manager Graeme Thompson on his trip down under, Smith will visit Townsville, Melbourne and Newcastle, venues for his side's group matches in the World Cup, which kicks off on October 25.
"We're going to finalise the hotels and training venues," he said. "We don't want to leave anything to chance.
"I want to make sure the hotels are of adequate standard and within reasonable travelling distance to training venues because the preparation for each game is going to be enormous.
"Being in a different city each week, basically for the time we're there, there are a lot of things we need to make sure are right before we get there so players know what to expect."
England face a difficult opening fixture against Papua New Guinea in the tropical North Queensland city of Townsville, which enjoys 9.7 hours of sunshine in October and temperatures of up to 30 degrees.
Smith accepts the Pacific Islanders will have an advantage due to the conditions but he is making plans to combat them.
"It's going to be warm but we've already done research into climate adjustment and there are things we can do before we go that can help us prepare for training and playing in those conditions," he said.
"We're doing a lot of research and looking at other sports and how they handle it.
"We'll be in Australia 10 days before the game and our research tells us that you are able to overcome jet lag and acclimatise yourselves in that period of time."
The Super League season will end a week earlier than normal to give Smith more time to prepare his side and, although teams will not be allowed to play warm-up matches in Australia, he is hoping to arrange a friendly against Ireland for the week after the October 4 Grand Final.
That match will enable players not involved in the Grand Final to gain match practice, while Smith is likely to field close to a full-strength team for the mid-season international against France, which has yet to be finalised.
In a compact domestic season, Smith accepts he is unlikely to have the luxury of training camps but is expecting to have some access to his players.
"We will be having some meetings with the players but they will be for some theory rather than practical sessions," he said.

Holders and hosts Australia are the odds-on favourites.

Giants lose injured Hodgson - Huddersfield Giants have received a major blow on the eve of the new season after David Hodgson was ruled out for six months with knee ligament damage. The 26-year-old winger joined the West Yorkshire club from Salford during the close season, but will miss a significant portion of the new season after tearing knee ligaments during training.
"This is obviously a big blow to the club, but it's an even bigger blow to David," said Giants coach Jon Sharp.
"I'm absolutely gutted for the lad and everyone at the club who had worked so hard to get him here in the face of strong competition for a number of big clubs.
"He's one of the best wingers in the game and he would have brought an extra dimension to our play. I suppose the only consolation is that when he returns in July it'll be like welcoming a new player - and that's really the start of the business end of the season." Sportbox

Bradford Bulls sign James Donaldson - Bradford Bulls have beaten both Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors to the signature of highly rated 16 years old, James Donaldson.
Donaldson, a Back Row Forward who hails from Cumbria and plays for Wath Brow Hornets, played for England schoolboys this year and his signature was one of the most highly sought after in recent years.
Bulls Coach Steve McNamara is delighted to have persuaded the youngster that his future would be best served at the Grattan Stadium.
"James has been one of the most sought after players in the country. He's been chased very hard by Wigan, Leeds and ourselves and we've all been vying for his signature.
"Obviously we're absolutely delighted he's decided to join the Bulls and that he sees his best career path and way of progression into being a Super League player at the Grattan Stadium.
"He's a Wath Brow lad and a really exciting prospect. James is a big, strong forward who can play prop or loose forward and he's a good a goalkicker too.
James Donaldson feels he has made the right decision to join the Bulls "I am so proud to be signing for Bradford Bulls; they are not only a great club but also a family club who are dedicated to bringing out the best in of all their players.
"I hope I can measure up to their expectations and I promise to work as hard as I can to help them believe they have done the right thing in signing me to a full time Academy contract and also to repay the support that has been shown to me by my family and friends, my school and everyone at Wath Brow Hornets." The Newtown Jets Head Back to Where It All Began - The Newtown Jets celebrated the centenary of their foundation on Tuesday afternoon in exactly the same room where the inaugural meeting of the club had taken place back on January 8th, 1908.
The battered assembly hall of the Newtown Town Hall might have seen better days but there was no mistaking the genuine pride and camaraderie in the crowd of current and past officials, players and supporters who gathered to pay tribute to the tenacious old club's centenary occasion.
Famous ex-players on hand included former Australian captains John Raper and Dick Poole, former Kangaroo five-eighth Tony Brown, plus former Newtown first graders like Bob Keyes, Peter Ryan, Ray Preston, Ron Wright, Clarrie Jeffreys, Bob Carnegie, John Floyd, Frank Speechley, George Debnam, Horrie Kessey and Brian McGoulrick.
93 years old veteran Joe Wade, who had played for Newtown in 1939-40, travelled down from the Central Coast and said he wouldn't have missed Newtown's centenary bash "for quids".
Federal Government Minister and MP for Grayndler Anthony Albanese was in attendance, along with the State MP for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt and their little boy Nathan (who was sporting a smartly-presented Newtown Jets polo shirt).
Ms Tebbutt received a big cheer from the packed assembly hall when Jets President Barry Vining pointed out Carmel's pivotal role in the NSW Government having made a $250,000 grant towards the re-turfing and provision of a new irrigation system for historic Henson Park. Marrickville Councillors Barry Cotter and Saeed Khan were also at the centenary gathering.
Congratulatory messages to the Newtown RLFC on its centenary came from the Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd; the Premier of NSW, Morris Iemma; Federal MP for Sydney Tanya Plibersek; State MP for Heffron Kristina Keneally; the Mayor of Marrickville Dimitios Thanos; the English Rugby Football League; the New Zealand Rugby League; the Queensland Rugby League; the Country Rugby League of NSW; UK clubs St Helens and Rochdale Hornets, as well as from a large number of former Newtown officials and players who now reside outside of Sydney.
The presence in the Town Hall of the family representatives of iconic Newtown players from the Bluebags' past century such as "Tedda" Courtney, Charles "Boxer" Russell, Paddy McCue, Charles "Chicka" Cahill and the incomparable Frank "Bumper" Farrell was given due recognition by various speakers.
The late "Bumper" Farrell was represented on the day by his daughter Maureen Elsegood and her son Jack Elsegood, the classy winger of the 1990's formerly with Manly-Warringah and the Sydney Roosters.
The event was more than capably compered by WSFM DJ Ron E. Sparks who has been a long-time Newtown Jets fan.
The lineup of speakers at the Town Hall function spoke of the major events and personalities in the club's history and the celebrations continued well into the night at the nearby at Newtown RSL Club, one of the Newtown Jets major sponsors.
A huge crowd of Jets supporters cheered and toasted the 100th anniversary of the foundation of this remarkably enduring old Sydney sporting institution, and an outsize and suitably-decorated Newtown Jets 100th birthday cake was devoured by the revellers.
The Newtown Jets look towards their second century with confidence while being mindful of the courage and resilience of the officials, supporters, sponsors and players who have steered the club through such tough times in the past.
Official representatives from the National Rugby League, the Australian Rugby League, the NSW Rugby League and officials from each of the remaining NSWRL 1908 foundation clubs - the Sydney Roosters, Balmain, North Sydney, South Sydney and Western Suburbs - were all on hand to pay tribute to the oldest club in Australian Rugby League on one of its proudest days. Fittler approached for Origin By Steve Mascord - Sydney Roosters coach Brad Fittler has confirmed an approach to be part of Craig Bellamy's NSW Origin staff. Bellamy has already co-opted former Blues skipper Andrew Johns as an assistant coach and prop Steve Roach as a co-manager as he attempts to end Queensland's two-year dominance of the series.
"There is nothing official but Craig did toss it up," Fittler told the Daily Telegraph last night.
"It all depends on my commitments but if there's anything I can do then I'd love to help out."
But ex-NSW captain Fittler said he would not have time to be in camp with the Blues on a day-to-day basis.
"This is my first (full) years as coach of the Roosters so obviously that's going to be my priority," he said.
"It's ages away but I don't think I'll be able to be involved on a daily basis."
In another representative coaching development, it's understood Wayne Bennett's preference for using some of his own staff might hinder his chances of being appointed to the Kiwis.
New Zealand director of football Graham Lowe has confirmed he will recommend Bennett be offered a role.
"I think we would be silly if we didn't invite Wayne to take some sort of role, " Lowe said.
"When you consider that's at stake, it's certainly something I'd thoroughly recommend. I think he could have any title he wanted."
The matter will be discussed at an NZRL board meeting in Auckland on January 18. Read more Daily Telegraph

Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield is backing the amiable Brian McClennan By Ian Laybourn - The arrival of Brian McClennan has provided engage Super League champions Leeds with fresh impetus ahead of the new season, according to captain Kevin Sinfield.
The former New Zealand boss has succeeded Tony Smith as the Rhinos head coach and, although he has been given a hard act to follow, Sinfield is backing the amiable Kiwi to keep the Yorkshiremen at the top.
"We had been playing under Tony for four years and, although it's not for me to say what the shelf life of any coach is, perhaps after four years either the squad needed to change or members of the coaching team did," said Sinfield.
"Brian has come in and everybody is refreshed and pumped up and really looking forward to the new season. He has brought enthusiasm and a freshness and he is a great thinker of the game.
"I think he will be fantastic. He's settled in already and the players are very happy."
McClennan, whose father Mike coached St Helens from 1990-93, has identified the Grand Final runners-up as the team to beat in 2008 but believes Super League XIII will be one of the most difficult to predict, a claim supported by Sinfield.
"All the clubs have improved," he said.
"There is nobody you can say is going to struggle, there are no weak links in Super League any more.
"The way the game is designed now, if you don't turn up and play, you get beaten. We found that out a couple of times last year and hopefully we can learn the lessons from that and make sure we are ready to play every game.
"It's all to play for again. We want to improve and Brian wants us to improve. Training has gone really well and hopefully we can start with a bang on Sunday and get some great preparation against Oldham."
The match against Sinfield's home-town club Oldham will be in aid of the captain's testimonial and the Rhinos' Grand Final-winning squad will all be in action for the first time since their Old Trafford triumph.
"It shows how much respect they have for Kevin and how highly they regard their skipper and their mate," said McClennan, who gave his international players the opportunity to have another week off.
Sinfield, who in 2007 became the first Leeds player to score in every match in a season, joined the club as a 13-year-old in 1994 and he has no plans to ever leave.
"Time has flown," he said.
"It's been a great experience and I love the place.
"I signed a new contract just before the Grand Final in October and I'll stay here for the rest of my career. It means a lot to me. I don't want to play anywhere else."
One player who will not be involved on Sunday is unsettled former Hull forward Jamie Thackray, who has been given permission to talk to other clubs, despite having two years left on his Leeds contract.Read more Sporting Life

The JT that won't get away: Bulldogs wrap up young gun Barba until end of 2010 - The Bulldogs are widely considered to have gambled but lost after waving goodbye to Johnathan Thurston following the 2004 season. But the club now has a chance for redemption, having rolled the dice again and taken a punt on a player whose similarities with the current Queensland and Australian halfback are striking.
Ben Barba, 18, has been at Belmore for just a few months but is already making the sort of noises Thurston did as a young five-eighth. The sort that has led the club to sign the relatively unknown halfback until the end of 2010. The sort that has persuaded the Dogs not to chase a halfback after losing Brent Sherwin.
Here's why. After the club brought Barba down from Mackay last June, he scored 130 points in 11 games in Jersey Flegg - 15 tries and 35 goals.
"He's just like one of those freaky kids, like Johnathan Thurston," his manager, Gavin Orr, said. "There are a lot of similarities between those two."
Like Thurston, he was a young and slightly scrawny Aboriginal kid when largely ignored at school-age carnivals in north Queensland. Like Thurston, he scores tries and kicks goals.
But the biggest and best similarity is the footballing instinct they share. Bulldogs recruitment manager Keith Onslow hasn't seen instinct like it.
It was Onslow who brought Barba to Belmore after being tipped off by a Mackay contact in Ken Kennedy and also Ben Anderson, the son of former Bulldogs player and coach Chris.
The Bulldogs took a punt on Barba, who was at that stage a fullback, even though after a carnival in Rockhampton he was ignored by no less than three Queensland representative teams.
He didn't disappoint, arriving a few days before June 30, which allowed him to register for last season, and blitzing the second half of the Flegg competition.
During his stupendous run, he even managed to sell a dummy to a high-ranking Bulldogs official. In a final, Barba raced out of the defensive line towards a hard-running Parramatta forward, and looked, on the surface at least, like he had erred badly. The official cursed the fact he had missed a tackle . to be told that Barba was about to put the ball under the black dot, having stripped the ball from the stricken prop.
"His first two touches against the Roosters in his first game were drop outs, and they went 60 metres on the fly," Onslow said. "Then he scored a try with 10 minutes to go. He's certainly got some rough edges, defensively and that, but he's a great kid, a terrific kid. He struggled in the gym early but he's hung in. He hasn't had an off-season yet.
"I've seen a million cases of second-year syndrome, but I have great hope for Ben Barba."
Barba is more circumspect: "I'm just happy that they're showing interest in me. I just love the football. I was moving a fair way from my family, but at the moment things are going sweet."
That is the one question mark over Barba. His brother, Aaron, was considered a prospect at Penrith but he became homesick and cut his career short voluntarily. The Bulldogs are being careful to ensure younger sibling does not fall to the same fate; he lives with teammates in Belmore and is allowed to return to Mackay as often as possible.
He also has the added advantage of being schooled by Andrew Johns, who is affording more advice to Barba than the other halves.
"It's an eye-opener for me," Barba said. "He was my idol growing up. It's just unbelievable being in his presence. He hasn't given us all his tricks. He's just given us the basics."
Barba has agreed to terms with the club in a deal that will keep him in their colours until the end of 2010, and is a significant reason the club refused to buy a halfback after the departure of Sherwin to the UK.
Ben Roberts and Daniel Holdsworth will begin this season as the first-choice halves combination. However, Barba, as the No.7 for the new under-20 National Youth Competition, may be given an opportunity at some stage.
"I'm just looking to put in a good season and whatever happens happens," Barba said.

Raper recalls Bluebag roots By Ray Chesterton - Anyone familiar with Johnny Raper's sometimes waywardness won't be surprised to learn he took four decades to get back to his rugby league roots.
Even Odysseus got home quicker than that.
"There are a lot of memories here for me," Raper said. "This is where I got my grounding in rugby league."
Raper, 68, was among 90 of the faithful at Newtown Town Hall yesterday to acknowledge Newtown's longevity as the premiership's oldest surviving foundation club.
Not the first club, as Newtown cheekily insist they are. That honour most certainly belongs to Glebe.
But Newtown were among the 1908 foundation clubs and, with Glebe's demise in 1929, are the longest surviving club, even if they now play in second tier competitions.
Raper, better known for his association with St George and official status as an Immortal of the game, said Newtown had always been an emotional link in his career.
"I was born in Camperdown in Newtown territory and, under the old residential rule, that's where I played grade football," he said.
Raper was Newtown's first-grade second-rower at 17 with Peter Ryan as lock, the position Raper made his own at St George.
"Peter taught me a lot. Everyone at Newtown did," Raper said. "I was only 17 and in those days of no replacements you needed to learn in a hurry."
Newtown, originally the Bluebags because their jumpers were a similar colour to a commercial washing powder, became the Jets in 1973.
They won premierships in 1910, 1933 and 1943 and were shock grand finalists under coach Warren Ryan in 1981 but lost to the Jack Gibson-coached Parramatta.
Newtown featured in some of the game's iconic moments, including the only 1-0 scoreline in a match, against St George in 1973, when Ken Wilson's field goal booted them to victory. Read more Daily Telegraph
Hull KR's Ben Galea craves a simple life - Hull KR new signing Ben Galea insists Rovers have to keep their game-plan simple at the start of the new Super League season.
Galea is one of 11 new players at Craven Park and he acknowledges it might take time for the squad to gel.
Twelve months ago, Rovers prepared for their debut season in Super League with eight new players - but that didn't stop them winning four of their first five matches.
Galea would love to enjoy a similar run of form this time around, but the 29-year-old accepts patience is going to be a key factor.
"Its important for us to take baby steps and build momentum slowly" Galea told the Mail.
"We need to gel well from the start. The next two weeks, including the one in Portugal, are very important for us because it's going to be a short preparation for some of us.
"We've had a few of the new guys coming over late and to start the season well, we will have to do the basic things well.
"We can't expect to go out there and do fancy things from the first minute of the first game.
"As long as we focus hard in the next few weeks, we should be able to start the season well." Hull Online

GREATER BRISBANE JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE
SIGN-ON DAYS - 2008
As rugby league in Australia celebrates its Centenary in 2008, the game's biggest nursery is preparing to grow even more champions for the game's future.
Home to over 12,000 registered players - more than anywhere else in the world - the Greater Brisbane Junior Rugby League expects another surge of interest when Sign-On Days commence in coming weeks.
A full list of clubs, Sign-on Days and contacts is available below, covering a massive expanse from Burpengary to Beenleigh and from Stradbroke Island to Forest Lake.
Since season 2003 a phenomenal growth of 40 per cent in player numbers has occurred in the Greater Brisbane area. That converts to 157 new teams or almost 80 more games of junior rugby league each week.
Among the players to come from the competition in the past decade have been current Australian captain and Golden Boot winner Cameron Smith, Dally M Medallist Johnathan Thurston and 2007 Rookie of the Year Israel Folau.
Particular growth has been seen in Brisbane's northern corridor, where Pine Rivers now has 21 teams (8 in 2003), Aspley has 33 teams (22 in 2003), Nundah-based Norths has 18 (11 in 2003) and Narangba has 9 (0 in 2003).
On the southside, Easts Carina has shot to 27 teams (14 in 2003), Wynnum Manly has 33 sides (21 in 2003), Springwood has 14 (6 in 2003) and Browns Plains has 17 (9 in 2003).
Even smaller inner-city clubs, which have virtually perished in senior rugby league, have shown positive junior trends in recent years with Bulimba, Cannon Hill, Valleys, Brothers, Souths Graceville and Wests forging ahead through the work of dedicated volunteers.
Based at Bardon, Wests possesses an enviable coaching staff which contains State of Origin legends Tony Currie, Glenn Lazarus and Danny Moore as well as local hero Wayne Treleaven.
Of the more interesting stories in Centenary year will be fortunes of the Cannon Hill Stars, the junior club of Queensland icon, the Immortal Wally Lewis.
Dead and buried two years ago without any junior teams, foundation club Cannon Hill was resurrected in 2007 with a solitary band of Under 7s players.
Hopes are high that the club can retain the 11 hardy players from last season and attract plenty more through a new relationship with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, the senior club with which Lewis starred in the mid 1980s.

RLCM Coachtalk Extract - Todays coaching extract is with coach Michael Hagan the full interview featured in Book 22 [2001]
In this RLCM Coaching Extract Keith Hookway and Michael were talking about defensive patterns.
".........have a couple of different scenarios depending on who you're playing against and the situation in the game, that determines how you defend your line. So there are a few different variables.
"You can't be a one-dimensional defensive team any more, you've got to have a bit of versatility in the way you defend different situations.
"We're working pretty hard on that at the moment, where we're not necessarily up and in or slide, but a bit of a balance between the two. With a defensive pattern it's an understanding of why you're doing it and how you solve certain questions that the opposition put to you.
"You need to have some smart players on the edge of the ruck that understand it before you can be really confident in how you do it.
In all the patterns you've still got to be able to defend over the football. That is a skill in itself, to be able to do it relentlessly for 80 minutes.
If you've got across your board a desire to defend well then that is half the battle.
"The hardest thing is defending when you're tired, and controlling the football still has an enormous effect on how you defend over the 80 minutes. If you turn the ball over on play two often, then you know you're going to be in for a pretty tough day..............." ONE SMALL EXTRACT from the Michael Hagan feature it appeared in RLCM Book 22. QRL Administrators Conference - Gold Coast February 8-10 We all know how vital a pre-season is to a rugby league team's premiership prospects. But what you might not know is just how important the administrators' version of a productive "pre-season" can be.
With a range of new topics and presenters, the QRL Administrators Conference to be held on the Gold Coast from February 8-10, will bring you up to speed quicker than your flashy winger's sprint to the try-line.
Wide Bay Division Manager Gary Dunbar has seen the benefits of the conference first hand both as a QRL employee and as a delegate. He claims the event provides club personnel with a great perspective on both traditional club operations and the methods employed by other clubs in the rugby league community.
The conference offers a mixture of topical issues presented by specialist presenters including administrative content relevant to club and local league delegates. The program finishes at lunch time on Sunday.
Along with providing a great networking opportunity, Dunbar says the conference arms participants with new ideas, knowledge and skills which can in turn "ease the burden" on hard-working Executives and Committee members.
Conference sessions begin on Saturday morning, February 9, with four streams:
* Stream 1 - Club Administration * Stream 2 - Providing Safe Environments * Stream 3 - Topical issues facing RL Development * Stream 4 - LeagueNet & New Technology
The event represents a fantastic social and club networking opportunity with an optional 'Social Package' of accommodation, golf and dinner also on offer for Friday, February 8.
For more information contact your Division office (South West (07) 46324381, South East Qld (07) 33932888, Wide Bay (07) 41232165, Central (07) 49223639, Northern (07) 47716166) or QRL Projects Manager Troy Morton on (07) 33932222.
