Huddersfield turning to youth - Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp is turning the accent on youth as the Giants look to build on their success of 2007.
Sharp's men followed up their 2006 Challenge Cup final appearance by reaching the Super League play-offs for the first time last season and he is confident of maintaining the revival of one of the game's traditional sleeping giants.
Sharp has been less active than normal in the transfer market but, in clearing out three thirtysomethings in Robbie Paul, Brad Drew and Paul Reilly, he has brought the average age of the team down while at the same time reducing the club's dependence on overseas players.
Among the newcomers are Kiwi Test centre Paul Whatuira, Australian hooker George Gatis and the Salford pairing of Luke Robinson and David Hodgson, while Sharp has promoted local youngsters Richard Lopag, Michael Lawrence, James Martin and Chris Lawson from the academy.
"I'm delighted with the make-up of the squad," Sharp told a press conference at the club's pre-season media day at the Galpharm Stadium.
"Things have changed from the dark days of meeting players in pub car parks and basically begging them to come to the club. Of our last five signings, four are internationals and one was the best nine in the NRL last year."
Huddersfield attracted some criticism for their willingness to part company with hooker Drew, 32, who has been one of their key playmakers for the last two seasons but joined Wakefield in the winter.
In his place Sharp has recruited Gatis while Robinson will be expected to take on many of the playmaking duties, but without the pressure of leadership.
"It's about re-generation and looking to the future," he added. "Our recruitment strategy has been based on youth and development, especially young English players.
"We only have one player over 30 and one of the biggest number of English players.
"We're not a team that relies on one player. We're very much a systems-orientated team that rely on each other doing their job. Luke - or anyone else - is not going to be given the job of running this team.
"I know there was a lot of responsibility placed on Luke at Salford and for a young player that can be difficult.
"We're going to challenge him to be the best player he can be. His enthusiasm is infectious and it's important to keep that fine balance."
The new signings will all make their first appearances against Hull in the Paul King testimonial match at the KC Stadium on Sunday.
The Giants broke with tradition by swapping their usual Portuguese warm-weather training camp for three days in Manchester, based at Sale Sharks' Carrington venue.
"I believe we needed a change," explained Sharp. "We have had three days in Manchester and done everything we would have probably done in Portugal but with three days to spare."
The club enjoyed average crowds in excess of 7,000 last year - their highest for more than 40 years - and are hoping for a club Super League record attendance of 14,000 for the opening home game against Leeds on February 10. Read more Sporting Life

Hull FC's, Danny Houghton impressive against Dewsbury - Teenage hooker Danny Houghton looks set to play a prominent role in Hull FC's challenge for the Grand Final this season.
Following the signing of Australian Test star Shaun Berrigan and the emergence of Tommy Lee in the hooking role, Houghton was expected to continue his progress in the under-21s this year.
But after another hugely impressive performance in Hull's 66-22 pre-season victory at Dewsbury, coach Peter Sharp has indicated it will take something special to keep Houghton out of the side.
He said: "Danny is a very good player and it will be a very good player who keeps him out of the first grade as the season goes on.
"The idea at this stage is to start Shaun Berrigan at nine and then move him somewhere else as the game goes on, bringing another nine on.
"It will be either Tommy Lee or Danny Houghton, that's if Tommy is not playing in the halves."
Sharp was also full of praise for Lee, 19, who after ending last season as Hull's first-choice hooker, was switched back to his more accustomed position of scrum-half for the match at the Tetley's Stadium.
As well as singing the praises of both Houghton and Lee, Sharp feels the performances of his debut makers Ashley Thackeray, Tom Briscoe, Mike Burnett, John Hodgson and Ryan Steen also show the club have a very bright future.
Speaking about Australian recruit Todd Byrne, who marked his debut with a try, Sharp added: "He showed what a great support player he is and what a nice touch he has around the park. I think he will be a great acquisition for us." Hull Online

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan believes changes are positive - Hull KR coach Justin Morgan believes the new rules introduced by the RFL for the new season will enhance the game for supporters.
The new rules came into effect on Boxing Day and Rovers will experience them for the first time in their first pre-season friendly at Oldham on January 20 (3pm).
Morgan was part of the consultation process, as were all the Super League coaches, and he believes the changes will benefit the game.
The one he embraces most is the change to the 20m restart, whereby a team will be awarded the head and feed at a scrum if they can bounce the restart out of play. Having a kicker like Paul Cooke in his squad, Morgan feels confident his side can benefit from this rule.
"All the changes introduced are designed to move the game forward" Morgan told the Mail.
"It's a high-risk play and if your team need points quickly they can use this change to the rule to deadly effect.
"Players like Long, Lee Briers and our own Paul Cooke are excellent kickers and they will be looking to utilise this rule as much as possible."
The RFL have changed the rule regarding scrums and when the ball is deemed to be out.
For years, the side feeding the scrum have held the ball between the feet of their loose forward long enough to draw the opposition offside.
Now the ball will be out when it emerges from between and behind the inner feet of the second row forward.
Morgan feels this will speed the game up and eradicate penalties for offside.
"We have seen teams using scrums to milk penalties from the referee" said Morgan.
"I think it's a smart move by the RFL and it will be good for the game. Now we will see teams use defence as their first form of attack."
While Morgan is happy with the new rule changes, there is one that he hoped would make it through the regulators.
"I'd like to see a change to defending a high kick" said Morgan.
"I think the defending team should be allowed to tackle the player in the air rather than wait for his feet to touch the ground." Hull Online

Mat Rogers eager to play five-eighth By Adam Gardini - Titans ace Mat Rogers jokes about the many times he's been labelled a 'hog' throughout his career.
Now the dual international hopes to justify the name calling after admitting he is excited by the prospect of filling the Gold Coast's vacant five-eighth spot this season.
Rogers and new signing Ashley Harrison are vying for the No.6 jersey approaching season 2008, with coach John Cartwright keen to give both a run in the pivot role during the club's pre-season trial matches.
Rogers, 31, said the prospect of sharing playmaking duties with representative halfback Scott Prince had put an extra spring in his step during pre-season.
"I've been called a hog by a lot of people in my time," he joked of the role. "I enjoy playing five-eighth, I enjoy the pressure of having the ball and enjoy having the ball.
"It's just exciting with the whole make-up of the side. To be able to slot into that sort of role and assist Princey, and with some of the forwards that we've been bolstered with, it's an exciting prospect.
"I've never really done it to a great extent in rugby league in first grade. Ashley Harrison has obviously got all the experience and I'll play anywhere.
"I hate to say it but I'm getting old so new challenges are exciting."
Rogers played most of last season in the centres, where he made a successful return from rugby union and proved wrong many of the critics who thought he would fail back in the 13-man code.
He was given several cameo appearances at five-eighth during the season but said only now was he starting to learn what it was all about.
"I hadn't really trained there at all so I was like a fish out of water," he said."I was trying to chase the ball. It's not the way to play the position.
"It's exciting to come to training knowing that I'm sort of going to be challenging myself every day with it."
Rogers said he had spoken to Prince about his fresh challenge at five-eighth.
"I said: 'Tell me where you want me to go now and in a couple of weeks you won't have to tell me any more'," he joked.
"The great players like Princey, he'd get the ball six out of six if he could, and that's what makes him a great player, so I'd rather sort of hover around him. Hopefully, whoever does get the (five-eighth) job can play a good supportive role and make him a better player." Read more GC Bulletin
Eels meet to discuss Tim Smith's future By Josh Massoud - Tim Smith's management will today discuss the errant halfback's re-instatement at Parramatta - notwithstanding the fact his profile has vanished from the club's official website.
Suspended indefinitely following successive drunken incidents last month, Smith will have a clearer idea of his future after agent David Riolo meets with Eels officials this afternoon.
Currently on leave, Parramatta CEO Denis Fitzgerald will not be in attendance, but last night refused to assure Smith's return.
"Nothing is guaranteed," Fitzgerald said. "At this stage it's still the same - he is suspended indefinitely."
The 22-year-old did not return to training with his teammates yesterday, but his absence from the Eels' website is perhaps more conspicuous.
Although contracted for another two seasons, Smith's bio and picture has been removed from the player profile page, reducing the NRL squad to 24 members.
Furthermore, his name no longer appears among the career statistics for the current group of players.
Although it appears the Eels have attempted to erase Smith from their plot of cyberspace, Fitzgerald explained the move as being in step with the playmaker's enforced leave.
"It's simply a matter that he has been suspended, so he is no longer on the website as player," he said.
Upon being suspended on December 14, Smith immediately returned to his childhood home on the Gold Coast to undergo daily re-habilitation for his alcohol problem.
Also understood to be suffering depression, Smith spent two weeks at the same clinic that helped fellow Queensland enigma Chris Walker overcome his off-field demons.
Smith's medical condition is expected to be discussed at today's meeting. Coach Michael Hagan and general manager Greg Mitchell will meet with Riolo before reporting to Fitzgerald.
"Tim has completed his rehabilitation - so that's stage one of the process," football manager Andrew Hill said.
"The second stage is to hear more about his progress before we can decide anything."
The 2005 Rookie of the Year will be sanctioned - provided he is not sacked - later this month, with a fine and behavioural agreement believed to be the preferred punishments.
Hagan could not be contacted for comment yesterday, but has publicly backed Smith's recovery bid.
Riolo refused to detail the evidence he will present on his client's behalf. "We are just going in to have a chat and evaluate where to go from here," he said. Read more Daily Telegraph

'Matty Bowen's cousin' seeks own name By Steve Ricketts - Brenton Bowen admits his move to the Gold Coast from North Queensland was motivated by a desire to step out from the shadow of his famous cousin Matt Bowen.
Brenton, 24, has an impressive NRL record as a winger, with 45 matches under his belt and 22 tries, but in Townsville he was simply known as "Matty Bowen's cousin".
At the Gold Coast Titans Bowen will start a new chapter in his football career and is in the frame to play wing or fullback in the round 1 clash with the Cowboys at Skilled Park on March 14.
The chance to train under the formidable Billy Johnstone once again was also a motivating factor in the move south.
"I've always been known as Matt Bowen's cousin," Brenton said yesterday. "It's up to me to step out of his shadow because it's a pretty big one to be under.
"Billy Johnstone brings out the best in you and that's one of the reasons I came down here."
Bowen said coach John Cartwright viewed him primarily as a winger but would also look at him for the fullback role which is filled so brilliantly for the Cowboys by cousin Matt.
"They're the two positions I like playing," Bowen said. "There's a lot of competition, but if I do the little things right at training, that will help me get a spot."
Bowen played 16 NRL matches last year and scored nine tries but was down on confidence.
An injury late in 2006 sidelined him for five weeks and he struggled to regain form.
Bowen injured a knee in one of the final training sessions of 2007
and it will be a further two to three weeks before he resumes full training. He is expected to be available for the trials.
Homesick when he first arrived on the Coast in November, Bowen said he felt at ease with the move now.
"I was missing Townsville a lot at first," he said. "All my friends and family are there.
"But once I got to meet the boys I felt a lot more comfortable. They have been really welcoming.
"My partner comes down in February and for the moment I'm staying with (former Cowboy) Gavin Cooper at Labrador. I know Clint Amos as well from North Queensland days, which has made things easier." Read more Courier Mail

Freak injury stuns Hull KR - Rhys Lovegrove will miss the start of Hull KR's Super League season after suffering a freak injury at a funeral. The 20-year-old severed tendons in his hand after falling over and cutting himself on some glass. "We will miss his versatility in the first part of the season," Robins coach Justin Morgan told the Hull Daily Mail. He was definitely in my thoughts for selection in the season opener at Headingley." Sports Box

Scott Sattler resigns from Titans role - Scott Sattler said his future career was an "open book" following his resignation, effective immediately, as Gold Coast Titans football manager.
Sattler, 36, quit the NRL club to pursue other business interests.
After commentating on NRL matches for Fox Sports last year, Sattler told AAP that he wanted to concentrate on his work in the media while looking for opportunities in the commercial sector.
"It's really going to be open book to be honest," Sattler said.
"I've been at the Titans for three-and-a-bit years now.
"I've been fortunate to work with some pretty wise people at the Titans over the years and what I've learnt at an operational level, I just want to see if I can put that to good use outside the club."
Sattler said he had quit more than two months before the NRL season started to cause minimum disruption.
Former lock Sattler, who played one State of Origin match for Queensland, is best remembered for his try-saving tackle on Sydney Roosters flyer Todd Byrne playing for Penrith in the 2003 grand final.
He played for the Gold Coast Seagulls, the Roosters, South Queensland Crushers, Gold Coast Chargers, Penrith and Wests Tigers from 1992 to 2004.
Titans managing director Michael Searle said he was disappointed to be losing Sattler from the club but understood his decision.
"Satts has been a big asset for us at the club," Searle commented.
"He joined us before we were given the green light for the licence and during that time he made a significant contribution to the grass roots rugby league and community areas of our business."
Sattler's position will be filled by the club's operations manager Scott Clark who was football manager of the Junior Kangaroos in 2006 and spent eight years as chief executive of the Burleigh Bears before joining the Titans.
In other news, club doctor Paul Ohmeson said injured North Queensland recruit Brenton Bowen (knee) will undergo restricted training for the next two weeks but should be fit for Gold Coast's opening trial against Penrith in Ipswich on February 16. Read more Yahoo Sport

Paul Bowman back for Cowboys - Foundation Cowboys player Paul Bowman has been asked to pull on the North Queensland jersey again. Not that the man the Cowboys recruited to replace Bowman in his famous No.4 jersey - Ben Harris - is on the outer. On the contrary, Bowman gave Harris the ultimate compliment by saying the former Canterbury centre "reminds me of the way I played".
However, Bowman will still don the boots for the Cowboys again when he runs out alongside North Queensland and rugby league greats at an international rugby sevens tournament at Darwin from January 19-20.
The Cowboys confirmed Bowman would come out of retirement to chime into a star-studded North Queensland side boasting Gorden Tallis and Steve Renouf with Wallabies great Glen Ella as captain/coach.
"I didn't need much convincing to pull on the Cowboys jersey again," Bowman told AAP.
But Harris should not be breaking into a nervous sweat - Bowman said he was happy to hand over his hallowed Cowboys jersey to the ex-Bradford Bull.
"He reminds me of the way I played," Bowman said.
"I look at him and think he is pretty similar type of player to me - always getting the job done and doesn't let anyone down."
Bowman even offered to help Harris fill the huge role if the pressure became too much.
"I can see there is possibly going to be pressure from external sources on him to perform but certainly not from the club," he said.
"I will catch up with him before the season gets closer, introduce myself and if he needs anything I would be happy to help him out."
Harris will chime into a Cowboys side that looks set to face the first month of the NRL 2008 season without inspirational skipper Johnathan Thurston (shoulder surgery).
But Bowman said the likes of returning forwards Luke O'Donnell (hamstring) and Steve Southern (leg) would ease the burden on the Cowboys' makeshift halves.
"The good thing is that the club has had the whole off-season to prepare for that," Bowman said.
"It would be harder if something freakish happened to Johnno at training and we had a week to prepare.
"But even Johnno would struggle behind a beaten pack.
"Whoever is filling in for Johnno will need that pack to help him out and thankfully we will have guys like Luke O'Donnell and Steve Southern back."
He may have taken up a job as a personal trainer but Bowman has not walked away entirely from the Cowboys.
Bowman will assist North Queensland under 20s coach Grant Bell.
"But I certainly don't have aspirations to be an NRL head coach - I don't need that pressure," he said.
At Darwin, Bowman will play rugby for the first time since running out for University of Queensland in 1994 against the likes of Ben Tune.
Former Cowboys Peter Jones, Adrian Vowles, David Myles and Noel Goldthorpe will also play.
But Bowman saw the 20-team tournament as more than a chance to catch up with old friends.
"Hopefully it can get a bit more exposure for the Cowboys' brand in NT," he said.
"There'd be a lot of talented kids up there and hopefully one day we can see them filtering through to the Cowboys." Read more Yahoo Sport

HALIFAX NATIONAL YOUTH LEAGUE - WEEK 14 * East Leeds 20 Elland 6 * Keighley Cougar Cubs 36 Siddal 12 * Featherstone Lions 22 Gateshead Thunder 6 * Wibsey Juniors 8 West Hull 24 * Leigh East 34 Saddleworth Rangers 6 * Kells 18 Hensingham 0 * Waterhead 26 Ince Rose Bridge 16 * Rylands 6 Leigh Miners Rangers 30
In the first weekend back after the festive break, the two league leaders maintained their winning ways.
Tries by scrum half Callum Priestman and a solo effort from second rower Lewis Carter gave WEST HULL an early lead at WIBSEY JUNIORS, and were the platform for victory. Todd Carter hit back for the hosts but winger Tom Moor made it 14-4 at the break. Tom Mainprize extended West's lead, Wibsey centre Dominic Hadfield replying before Kaya Crawford had the last word for the visitors, for whom Paul Shaw was a again a standout.
LEIGH MINERS RANGERS produced a strong second half performance to overcome RYLANDS. Adam Thompson's 9th minute score for Rangers was cancelled out by Ash Cornelia's superb 60 metre effort in an exciting opening quarter.
Hooker Thompson again exploited the markers from dummy half to give Rangers a narrow lead at the break. The second period belonged to the visitors after Troy Allinson's interception came to nothing in Rylands' last chance; stand off Andy Sarsfield crossing for a brace of tries to go with efforts from; Tom Davidson, Tom Bradbury and prop Jacob Tinney.
Richard Frankland's welcome return saw FEATHERSTONE LIONS see off GATESHEAD THUNDER at the Mill Pond. The second rower kicked three goals but it took Kris Rowley's individual try from half way in the 53rd minute to ensure the spoils.
The opening 20 minutes was scoreless until Craig Murphy's well timed and angled run put the Lions in front. Rhys Clarke levelled for Gateshead but a minute later Andy Clare went over for the hosts. Centre Murphy crossed again to make it 18-6 at the interval and Featherstone, for whom Steve Clough was inspirational, held on.
A last minute try from Will Schofield, converted by Sean Garrett was just enough to see WATERHEAD home against INCE ROSE BRIDGE. Ash Wildman picked up a hat trick for the home side, with Danny Parry their other try scorer.
Four touchdowns to stand off Steve Grundy, two of them length of the field runs and one a game breaking interception, was the highlight of LEIGH EASTS win over SADDLEWORTH RANGERS. Danny Weaving, Jack Davies and Toby Adamson also crossed for Easts who were strong after the break, Saddleworth's first half reply coming from prop James Brennan.
Chris Hindle's try on the hour finally put daylight between EAST LEEDS and gallant ELLAND. Steve Sutherland opened the scoring for the Leeds outfit, but Elland fought back well to take the lead through Matthew Crawshaw's touchdown and Neil Murgatroyd's conversion. Hooker Gareth Lally posted tries either side of the interval in a strong all round display for Easts. BARLA

Centenary birthday time for oldest Australian clubs - It's Centenary birthday time for Rugby League's oldest Australian clubs and, to celebrate, some of their grand survivors today gathered at the scene of their great battles, the Sydney Cricket Ground, to relive past glories.
The six remaining Foundation clubs - South Sydney, Sydney Roosters (initially Eastern Suburbs), Balmain and Western Suburbs (who merged to become Wests Tigers), Newtown and North Sydney - celebrate the 100-year anniversary of their formations over the next five weeks.
In an historic occasion, six of the oldest players to have played for the clubs - Wally O'Connell (Easts/Sydney Roosters), Bill Keato (Wests), Jack Lawrence (Souths), George Debnam (Newtown), Norm Strong (Norths) and Sid Ryan (Balmain) - locked hands for a memorable photograph as an informal kick-off to Rugby League's Centenary celebrations.
The smallest but certainly the most celebrated footballer of the six was Wally O'Connell, Australia's oldest surviving Test captain.
The diminutive five-eighth, who played 10 Tests, first played for Easts in 1942 and forged a marvellous career despite impaired peripheral sight, captaining Australia during the 1948-49 Kangaroo tour.
He later coached Manly to their first Grand Final appearance in 1951 (he would have played but had broken his arm) and returned to the position to be Bob Fulton's first Manly coach in 1966.
Newtown's George Debnam first played for the Bluebags during World War II before heading off to do his Army service in Darwin.
He returned to play again before, in his first year of retirement, becoming club secretary in 1952 and the man most responsible for saving the club from possible closure after investigating the books and finding it in extreme debt.
Despite the loss of several leading players, the debts were paid back within five years and the first grade side, thanks to a new breed of young locals, made the 1954 and 1955 finals against the champion Souths side.
"I had no idea what I had let myself in for, there had been a lot of secrecy about the finances and players owed money, but we were able to recover and proudly we soon after had one of our best eras on the field," recalled Debnam.
Bill Keato, a goalkicking Wests fullback who was the competition's leading pointscorer in 1947, began his career with the Magpies back in 1938 and is the oldest of the group at 89.
He gave his beloved black and whites over four decades of service as a player, club secretary and treasurer and played in the 1948 final against Balmain.
He could remember his first playing bonus (season's match winning payments) of £13 in 1938, of which two shillings and sixpence was deducted as membership fees.
"I was working in Sydney on a weekly wage of seven shillings and sixpence," he recalled.
"From this amount came my weekly ticket and costs associated with playing for Wests, two meals a week in Sydney [because he didn't have time to go home to Liverpool and back to Pratten Park for training], plus tram or train fares on Saturdays to play.
"So from my £13 pounds there was little left after buying a pair of 'Dally M' football boots made to measure for £3. But it wasn't a financial thing. I wouldn't have swapped a thing, it was an honour to play for Wests."
Souths' Jack Lawrence, 86, can still remember watching his father Jack Sr play for the Rabbitohs in the late 1920s (he played 58 first grade games) - alongside brother Vic, who was a strapping centre who played in two premiership sides and four finals.
Jack Jr played three seasons with Souths from 1944 (19 first grade games) as did his brother Vince. He then set up his own milk run and retired from football.
Norm Strong held Norths' appearance record for 30 years with a total of 231 first grade games from 1950-62.
As a hooker he naturally rues the demise of the competitive scrum - and his old club from the NRL - but still enjoys watching the game.
"I still like the game, the speed and the skill level, but I don't like scrums being a virtual rest break and halfbacks becoming hookers almost at will," he said.
"In my day, scrums were a game within the game and a hooker was exposed to all sorts of treatment."
Sid Ryan was a tough second-rower in Balmain's second great period of success in the 1940s when they won two premierships and were beaten in two other finals.
He played alongside the likes of Harry Bath, Jack Jorgensen and Pat Devery.
Interestingly, O'Connell helped thwart another title for Ryan in 1945 when he was one of the stars in the winning Easts side, while Keato's Wests denied Ryan's Tigers a third straight premiership in 1948 - 60 years ago this September.
The three have not been reunited since.
The oldest surviving club, Newtown, will hold a function tomorrow to celebrate their 100-year anniversary followed by Souths (January 17), Balmain (January 23), Roosters (January 24), Wests (February 4) and Norths (February 7). NRL

RLCM Coachtalk Extract -

TODAYS coaching extract is with Wayne Bennett the full interview featured in Book 12 [1999]
".........it is a sad situation where a young player is labelled and told to play a position. Young players should be given the opportunity to play in more than one position. If you have players who are multi skilled then playing more than one position is beneficial to them. Each position requires different qualities and therefore allows players the chance to have a better all round game".
".........I don't try walking the line, I just try to be me. If there is a problem we have to talk about, then we talk. If I am unhappy with something then I will tell them or we will have a drink together if necessary. That is something that I have been able to do really well and I don't have a problem with it. If they can't be natural with me and they try to be someone else that is their problem".
"...........the bottom line is we produce winning football teams. I don't kid myself at all anymore, if we weren't a winning football club I would be long gone. My longevity there will be determined by that, we might have a bad season and things don't work out for us, that could happen. It would not be the end of me but I would not want to have two of them".
"...........the expectations have always been high so we don't worry about that anymore, we don't make that an issue. My expectations for 1999 is to be a top team again, I am not worried about what we did last year and if the players worry about it they may find themselves out of the team".
"...........challenges are there to be met and it won't be any easier than last year, it's going to be tougher. We just have to get out there and do it, there is no easy answer and no soft way to get there, it will be hard work.
"The players have climbed the mountain before, they have realised it will not be easy and they have developed a state of mind that they want to be on top. The easy part is getting there, the hardest part is to stay there".
"..............I know that if I coached today the same way I did 10 or 11 years ago I would not be still there now. The things that haven't changed are my values and philosophies to the way I believe football should be played. We changed our game in some ways to meet the times by having to make small adjustments here and there to the way we play, some adjustment to personnel.
"I know I would be vulnerable as a coach and as a team if we didn't grow and learn. I need to keep an edge and keep making changes where necessary not just for change sake, and if I don't I may not survive".

QRL Administrators Conference - Gold Coast February 8-10 We all know how vital a pre-season is to a rugby league team's premiership prospects. But what you might not know is just how important the administrators' version of a productive "pre-season" can be.
With a range of new topics and presenters, the QRL Administrators Conference to be held on the Gold Coast from February 8-10, will bring you up to speed quicker than your flashy winger's sprint to the try-line.
Wide Bay Division Manager Gary Dunbar has seen the benefits of the conference first hand both as a QRL employee and as a delegate. He claims the event provides club personnel with a great perspective on both traditional club operations and the methods employed by other clubs in the rugby league community.
The conference offers a mixture of topical issues presented by specialist presenters including administrative content relevant to club and local league delegates. The program finishes at lunch time on Sunday.
Along with providing a great networking opportunity, Dunbar says the conference arms participants with new ideas, knowledge and skills which can in turn "ease the burden" on hard-working Executives and Committee members.
Conference sessions begin on Saturday morning, February 9, with four streams:
* Stream 1 - Club Administration * Stream 2 - Providing Safe Environments * Stream 3 - Topical issues facing RL Development * Stream 4 - LeagueNet & New Technology
The event represents a fantastic social and club networking opportunity with an optional 'Social Package' of accommodation, golf and dinner also on offer for Friday, February 8.

C Grade Coach Wanted - CVD Cobras require a coach for their 2008 C Grade (U18/19) side. The Cobras are based at Edensor Park and play in the Parramatta District. We have for the last 2 years won the Parramatta District Club of the Year Award for being the best run Club.
Our C Grade team from last year took out the 2nd Division Premiership and although half the team are now too old we have a number of new players willing to join in on the success of this team. Unfortunately our previous coach has moved away from the area and cannot continue with the role.
Although coaches with experience at coaching older ages may have an advantage with this position we are aware that everyone starts somewhere so if you are enthusiastic about coaching and would like to join a well run club, call or email our Secretary, Wayne Smith on 0412 979 271 or wcs@...
