The day Wales made history
By Peter Shuttleworth
NEW Year's Day will mark the centenary of the first rugby league international.
But in a cruel twist of sporting fate, the nation that gave birth to international rugby league is at its lowest ebb.
Wales' heroics in union are much more notable than their achievements in the 13-man game but the Welsh will go down in league history for staging the top level fixture when they welcomed New Zealand to Aberdare Athletic Ground on a freezing afternoon on January 1, 1908.
By the time New Zealand arrived in the Valleys, rugby union had established itself as Wales' national sport just three years earlier when the All Blacks, the Kiwis' 15-man rugby team, were defeated 3-0 in Cardiff in the battle between the world's two finest union nations.
South Wales was a firm amateur union hotbed but league clubs were starting up in Merthyr Tydfil, Ebbw Vale, Aberdare, Barry, Mid-Rhondda and Treherbert as attempts were made for a foothold in the market as they tried - in vain - to become part of the professional Northern Union.
Sporting fans in South Wales were curious of this new form of rugby so, despite the bitter conditions, 12,000 folk came from the collieries and chapels and witnessed a heart-warming Wales victory.
Wales' players that day had previously suffered abuse, being labelled traitors and mercenaries, for daring to turn their back on the amateur union clubs, chasing the professional cash and migrating north - including their captain Tom Llewellyn, who left Treherbert for Oldham.
Wales boasted talented and quick stars, many of whom had benefited from long pro experience, and the New Zealanders didn't enjoy the frozen pitch, despite taking an early lead when Arthur Kelly scored
Home-town hero Dai Thomas levelled almost immediately for Wales but the All Blacks were again ahead at half-time when Billy Wynyard scored and Dally Messenger converted to give New Zealand an 8-3 interval lead.
Wigan outside-half Johnny Thomas shone as Wales enjoyed the wind behind them and the hosts got their dividends when Bradford player Howell Francis scored and Wales sealed victory just before full-time as Dai Jones touched down to put Wales a point in front.
In the dying seconds, though, the touring New Zealanders could have snatched the win had Richard Wynyard not, somewhat uncharacteristically, dropped a pass in front of Wales' try-line as the Dragons claimed a 9-8 triumph.
You'd hardly know it but Tuesday week will mark 100 years since that momentous occasion at Aberdare.
Those 12,000 crammed around the pitch didn't fully understand that they were watching history in the making.
The shame is that Wales' rugby league side has just failed to qualify for the Rugby League World Cup finals, the first time they've suffered such heartbreak, as the impact on union's professionalism in 1995 finally hits home. The migration of talented rugby players 'going north' for fame and fortune has stopped as they can now achieve such riches at home playing union.
No Welshman will probably ever again replicate the heroics of superstars such as Billy Boston, Scott Gibbs, Jonathan Davies, Dai Watkins and Scott Quinnell, who went on to become Great Britain greats.
Before '95, Wales' rugby league team revelled in their golden era as Davies, Quinnell, Gibbs, John Devereux, Allan Bateman, Dai Young, Iestyn Harris, Keiron Cunningham took the World Cup by storm as they roared to the semi-final. Wales' team of 2001 emulated their predecessors.
But now Cunningham and Harris have retired, the Dragons are made up of journeymen.
Awarding a Super League franchise to Welsh rugby league team the Celtic Crusaders in 2009 wouldn't just be a fitting reward for Wales' impact on rugby league, but it is the faint light at the end of Welsh rugby league's dark tunnel. ic Wales

Dons Legends to be Transformed into Club Mascots - Doncaster Rugby League legends, Kevin Parkhouse and Vila Matautia are to be made into club mascots for the Dons in 2008. The mascots will be high profile within the club, appearing on matchday's, community and corporate events. The mascots will be launched at the clubs home friendly against Hull FC at the Keepmoat Stadium on the 27th January.
"The mascots will play an important role within the club, at matchdays and other events and will help raise the profile of the club. The idea of using the legends was give the older fans mascots they could relate to whilst also been appealing to the younger audience," said Dave Marshall, Community Manager.
Kevin Parkhouse or Parky as he's known to the Dons fans played in the 80's for the club. Tragically Parky was killed in a car accident in 2006 and since then the Kevin Parkhouse Memorial Fund has been established, raising funds for community sport, including the Dons Scholarship Programme.
Vila, the big Samoan who became a legend with the fans at the beginning of the 90's with his powerhouse performances, still works in Rugby League and is currently attached to St Helen's.
The mascots also bring about new commercial opportunities in the club. The club is offering packages to buy sponsorship of these mascots, helping raise companies brand awareness at both match days and in the community. For more information about sponsoring the club mascots, please call Dave Marshall tel. (01302) 765 888 or email davemarshall@... Doncaster Online

QRL Administrators Conference - Gold Coast February 8-10 We all know how vital a pre-season is to a rugby league team's premiership prospects. But what you might not know is just how important the administrators' version of a productive "pre-season" can be.
With a range of new topics and presenters, the QRL Administrators Conference to be held on the Gold Coast from February 8-10, will bring you up to speed quicker than your flashy winger's sprint to the try-line.
Wide Bay Division Manager Gary Dunbar has seen the benefits of the conference first hand both as a QRL employee and as a delegate. He claims the event provides club personnel with a great perspective on both traditional club operations and the methods employed by other clubs in the rugby league community.
The conference offers a mixture of topical issues presented by specialist presenters including administrative content relevant to club and local league delegates. The program finishes at lunch time on Sunday.
Along with providing a great networking opportunity, Dunbar says the conference arms participants with new ideas, knowledge and skills which can in turn "ease the burden" on hard-working Executives and Committee members.
Conference sessions begin on Saturday morning, February 9, with four streams:
* Stream 1 - Club Administration * Stream 2 - Providing Safe Environments * Stream 3 - Topical issues facing RL Development * Stream 4 - LeagueNet & New Technology
The event represents a fantastic social and club networking opportunity with an optional 'Social Package' of accommodation, golf and dinner also on offer for Friday, February 8.

GALLEN TO CAPTAIN THE SHARKS The Cronulla Sharks have appointed NSW State of Origin forward Paul Gallen to the club captaincy for the 2008 season. The 26-year-old Gallen, who assumed the role in the absence of an injured Brett Kimmorley towards the end of 2007, was humbled by the appointment and was looking forward to contributing to what is hoped will be a successful season for the Sharks next year.
"While I captained the team towards the back end of last season, to have the job on a permanent basis is a great honour," Gallen said. "I really enjoyed my time as captain and was hoping it would one day become full time, so getting the news today is a big thrill.
"Noddy will be hard act to follow but I realise I still have a lot to learn as far as the captaincy goes and he is one guy I'll be looking for to provide some advice and guidance."
The decision to step aside as captain was made by Kimmorley himself, who thought the time was right to take somewhat of a back seat and to concentrate more on his own game.
"While I know I've still got plenty to offer the team, I thought it best that I worry about myself and my own footy, rather than to also deal with the responsibility of the captaincy," Kimmorley explained. "If I can work towards getting back to my best by doing that, I think the team will certainly benefit."
"Gal did a great job while I was on the sideline last year, I'm sure he'll do well in the role again next season and I'll be giving him my 100 per cent support."
Injured in the final game of the State of Origin series last year, Kimmorley missed the remainder of the 2007 season following knee surgery. He also had an off-season operation to repair wrist ligament damage, but is expected to start 2008 fully fit.
Sharks coach Ricky Stuart, who spoke to Kimmorley, then Gallen, earlier today, praised Kimmorley's unselfishness in making the decision he has.
"Brett's decision is obviously one he has made for what he believes is in the best interests of the team," Stuart said. "He sees the importance of personally having a big season himself in 2008 and I fully support him in the decision he has made."
The Sharks wound up their pre-Christmas training today and will return on January 7. Cronulla Sharks Online

CULTURE CHANGE: GOODBYE TO THE OLD MISSION STATEMENT/VALUES/VISION DAY
By Wayne Goldsmith
[Wayne Goldsmith will be a keynote speaker at the 2008 ARL/NRL High Performance Conferences in Sydney and Brisbane.]
Don't you hate the old "Mission statement / Values / Vision" day. You know the one I mean. It goes something like this.............
Someone at the organisation decides some culture change is needed.
"What we need is a break out day where all get together in a spirit of co-operation and team work and change the culture of the organisation".
They enlist the services of a consultant who gets all the staff together in a big room, plays an ice breaker game or two, then says something like "OK gang - what do we stand for? What do we are a group stand for? What is our trade mark?"
Then for the next 30 minutes, people yell out things like "honesty", "integrity", "team work", "passion" etc etc.
Over the following 30 minutes, the words are grouped, a sentence - a "mission statement" is formed and HEY HO PRESTO ABRACARDABRA - THE CULTURE CHANGES!
Let's face it - some people have been through so many of these sessions they end up giving what they know the executive and management want to hear.........and most importantly the behaviour and performance of the staff DOES NOT CHANGE - (well, not for more than a few days anyway).
Be honest. When was the last time you did one of these all day Mission Statement time wasters and actually got a real, meaningful, sustainable change in your organisation's culture????
Culture does not change like this. Culture is a result of a real commitment of people to sustainable success and performance improvement. Culture grows from within people.
It spreads like a kind of "positive virus". It feeds on enthusiasm. It thrives on passion. It seeks out opportunities to learn and improve to sustain itself. Like a virus it needs to continually seek new "hosts" to help it grow and survive.
Culture is not a mission statement or set of words - it's a way of life! Culture comes from CONSISTENCY - the consistent desire of people (and organisations) to perform.
I once worked with a football team who did the old Mission statement bit EVERY YEAR with each new group of players, coaches and staff.
We got all the "usuals" - honesty, integrity, humility, team work, passion, enjoyment etc etc. We developed a lovely little vision statement: "We will work together to strive for excellence on and off the field in an environment of quality, consistency and fun" (sound familiar?).
Then when we hit the gym or the training paddock, the old behaviours came back...poor performance, inconsistent effort, sub standard attitudes, lack of commitment.
The actions beared no resemblance to the words - the behaviours did not support the vision. The culture did not change, the team's performance did not improve, the coach got sacked, the CEO retired and five years later, they are still trying to change the culture through the annual mission statement "pilgrimage".
THERE IS A BETTER WAY!!!
Instead of getting everyone together to yell out their favourite words and catch phrases, start with a small group core of people who actually want to change. The desire to change is the critical element in the culture change equation.
Really aim to understand who they are and what they want out of their lives.
Spend some real quality time learning about them and how they work, what motivates them, what they want out of the organisation and what they have to contribute to its sustainable success.
Then work with them teaching them how to maximise their own individual performance and how to work as a highly effective team. Teach them to teach. Teach them how to inspire and how to lead.
Then.......provide the core group with the environment and opportunity to "infect" and influence others members of staff. Empower them to engage their team mates in learning and growing.
Empower them to drive the change process and the culture dynamic.
Nothing ENFORCED is sustainable.
Nothing IMPOSED creates continuous excellence.
Culture GROWS. Culture GROWS. Culture GROWS.
..from within.
