Off the Ball Play
A feature article with Ric Charlesworth
".......players must analyse their movements and decisions throughout a game. They should question what would have happened, for example, if they moved two steps more to the right instead of staying stationary?
"By questioning their movements and decisions, players will hopefully carry their knowledge into their next game, and if a similar situation presents itself, the player should act more effectively.
"What tends to go unnoticed is where players should be and what they should be doing when they're 'off the ball'.
A Rugby League match goes for 80 minutes, yet the average player may only have possession of the ball for 1-2 minutes during the entire match.
"Therefore, they should be spending the remaining time either defending, acting as support players or positioning themselves in anticipation of a movement...."

Peter Sharp believes Hull now has the experience
By Andy Hampson, PA Sport
Hull coach Peter Sharp believes his squad now has the experience and stability that it lacked last season.
Sharp's side were hotly tipped going into Super League XII after reaching the 2006 Grand Final but under-achieved after starting the campaign slowly.
They eventually finished fourth and saw their play-off hopes ended by Wigan but Sharp was nevertheless pleased with their achievements over a difficult year.
The club had to deal with the fall-out from playmaker Paul Cooke's controversial cross-city move to Hull KR and former captain Richard Swain was forced to retire prematurely due to injury.
There has been further disruption this winter with prop Hutch Maiava sacked for misconduct but Sharp is pleased with how his squad is now looking.
New signings Shaun Berrigan, Adam Dykes and Todd Byrne arrived from Australia late last week and another, Peter Cusack, will join in the new year.
Sharp said: "I was fairly happy with the way we finished and what we achieved considering the stuff that got thrown at us.
"We lost Cookie. He only played a few games and we lost him forever.
"That left a big hole in a side that hadn't got a lot of leadership. That was a big blow for us and we lost Richard Swain, our other main leader, structurally, within the team.
"We have had to strengthen in some areas but we are pretty happy with our squad.
"We have got one or two guys that can play in multiple positions and we have got most areas covered. We are happy with our young brigade and our senior players."
Former Brisbane Broncos hooker Shaun Berrigan is the stand-out name from an exciting group of new signings and Sharp has high hopes for all of them.
Sharp said: "We needed a seven and we've got a very good seven (Dykes).
"Shaun's just a great player. We've got a couple of nines so he'll play a bit of nine and then play somewhere else. He can play lock, centre, half-back; he's a very versatile rugby league player.
"Todd gives us that outside back coverage. He can play full-back, centre and wing. It gives us a lot of coverage.
"Hutch unfortunately has departed but we have replaced him with Peter Cusack. We've added these guys to our squad and certainly added to the versatility."
The Cooke saga remains a hot topic in Hull with the player recently banned for the opening six weeks of next season after being found guilty of illegally approaching Rovers.
Sharp insists, however, the matter is no longer an issue in the dressing room and the atmosphere at the club is harmonious.
"Paul Cooke happened a long time ago and is very much put to bed," Sharp said. "We have moved on and I am sure Paul has as well.
"There's been no upheaval, there's never been too much upheaval at this club. It's been pretty smooth sailing. They're good people and they are pretty rock-solid." Read more Sporting Life

TICKETS for next year's Millennium Magic in Cardiff are now on sale at Warrington Wolves' Wolfware shop.
Ticket prices for the 2008 event have been frozen.
This means that supporters can buy weekend tickets for the Bank Holiday weekend of May 3-4 to take in six games of top engage Super League action from just £30.
Alternatively, day tickets can be purchased for just £18 for adults and £5 for juniors.
Last year was the first time that any sport had ever held six games under one roof over one weekend.
However, Rugby League, with its strong track record for successful innovation, managed to attract nearly 60,000 fans to the Millennium Stadium to see what some of the supporters, players, coaches and commentators all described as six mini cup finals'. cheshire.co.uk

Graeme Thompson will work close to GB coach Tony Smith ENGLAND'S new team manager Graeme Thompson could use a few pearls of wisdom from Cumbrian RL legend Ike Southward in his new role.
For the Scotsman, who will be working closely with coach Tony Smith in the build-up to next year's World Cup, cut his rugby league teeth at Derwent Park.
Thompson played a couple of games for Workington Town A when he first switched from rugby union following a successful debut for Scottish Students.
"I think my first game was against Sheffield when I played against Keith Senior. I can remember Craig Barker, Jonty Gorley and Peter Livett in the Workington side and Gary Smith was the coach.
"But what I'll never forget was the little private coaching session I got from Ike Southward who was groundsman at the time.
"He took me on the back field and was showing me how to chip the ball into space. It wasn't about putting back spin on the ball but he was showing me how to kick the ball so that it bounced either right or left after it landed.
"Ike was a gem but the only trouble was with my Edinburgh accent and his broad west Cumbrian accent I don't think we could understand each other," he recalls.
Thompson played under another famous Rugby League name when he was with Scottish Students. John Risman was the coach of the team at the time, another man with connections at Workington Town.
"It was actually a chap called Bob Jameson who got me across to Workington.
I had been playing for Watsonians in Edinburgh before I turned to rugby league and Bob arranged for me to go to Town for a trial.
"Bob was a character and he was trying to take-over the Workington club at the time.
"Although I only made two A team appearances I also remember turning out in a testimonial game for Willie Richardson, who had played for all four Cumbrian teams.
"Kurt Sorensen was just finishing at Town when I went there and then Ross O'Reilly took over for the Super League season. I had a run out with Carlisle Border Raiders before I ended my involvement with Cumbrian rugby," he says.
But it was at Workington that he first met the man he will be working closely alongside at the World Cup - new head coach Tony Smith.
"He had just joined Workington Town as a player and I remember going up into the old squash club bar and meeting him for the first time.
"Naturally I've reminded him of that," he says.
The new role will see Thompson working with Smith on all aspects of planning, preparation and logistics for the England team as he takes over from Abi Ekoku who stepped down last month.
"I'm going out to Australia with Tony in January on a fact-finding trip to prepare for the World Cup," he says.
The Scot has worked within the RFL's Performance Department for the past six years and has been performance director since January 2006.
"I am highly honoured to accept what I regard as a tremendous personal and professional opportunity.
"The role will see me working with England's elite players and coaches for what will be a hugely exciting international event.
"I will be aiming to use the experience I have gained in recent years for the benefit of the squad as they prepare for, and compete in the World Cup."
Head coach Smith said: I have seen first hand that Graeme's organisational skills are second to none. He has established a good rapport with the coaching staff and enjoys the respect of the playing squad." News and Star

Gavin Henson linked to Widnes Vikings Rugby League outfit Widnes Vikings are reportedly thinking of launching an audacious bid for Gavin Henson - but the Ospreys have told them not to bother. There is speculation that the Vikings are keen to lure Welsh rugby union's most high-profile figure into the 13-a-side code if they are told next year they can compete in the Super League in 2009. But the move is a non-starter, according to the Ospreys. ''Gavin is under a long-term contract at the Ospreys and he isn't going anywhere,'' said Liberty Stadium director of rugby Kevin Hopkins. swansea.co.uk

Appin Doggs JRLFC are barking
By Sean Cunningham
Appin Doggs Junior Rugby League Club will celebrate their entry into Group 6 by hosting a launch on Sunday at Wonson Oval, Appin.
The open day will start at 11.30am and will include football giveaways, passing and kicking games and a free sausage sizzle.
Club president Matt Stockwell said the club was "junior-based" and he hoped to have several junior teams created.
Excitement has been building in Appin since Stockwell announced the notion of having an Appin team represented in next season's Group 6 competition.
"One day not so long ago, while having lunch with my wife and kids at the Appin pub, I noticed a group of kids playing league, all of them dressed in Appin soccer gear," Stockwell said.
"I yelled out `hey boys if you could play league in Appin, would you'?
"Yes, they screamed and it was from the look on their faces that the Appin Doggs were born."
The club will give local children a chance to play rugby league again. Stockwell said registrations would be taken on the day, and encouraged those who were interested in playing, coaching or managing, to attend.
"At the moment my plan is to base a nucleus of approximately 10 players who played for Campbelltown Collies in the Parramatta competition and build an A-grade side around them," he said.
"Come and join the new committee and find out about our plans to bring backyard football back to Appin in Group 6 next year." Camden Advertiser

Uralla Tigers will return to Group 19
By JAMES POLSON
THE URALLA Tigers will return to Group 19 in 2008 following a directive from Country Rugby League's boundaries committee. Uralla will be 'instructed' to play in the new President's Cup, a new standalone competition that allows single-team clubs to compete against second grade sides from first division clubs in the Group.
Originally a Group 19 club, the Tigers were premiers in Group 4 Division 2 this year and also made the grand final in 2006.
A meeting will be held in Glen Innes on Saturday to ensure that the Tigers' return is 'smooth and fair' according Terry Quinn, chief executive officer of the CRL.
"They're actually a Group 19 club, they've only been playing for a few years in Group 4," Quinn told The Armidale Express.
"They were always only on loan and the arrangement was that they'd always go back to Group 19 if there was a competition available which there now is with the President's Cup."
Uralla club secretary Carl Press said the plan could have dire implications for the Tigers.
"We've put our case to them, told them the players we have, but they still say it's our only option," he said.
"Five of our younger players have expressed interest in going to play for Bendemeer, and a few of the older blokes have indicated they'll just retire, whereas if we had the full 17 players they'd probably keep going.
"We've tried to express that to them, but whether they don't think we're telling the truth I don't know.
"Basically, if they force us on it, it could kill the club which would be an unfortunate thing.
A small-town club like Uralla would suffer under the new arrangement, Press said.
"Whoever minor premiers are don't get to hold the semis, because it's all dictated by first grade, and this year we got 70 per cent of our gate takings just from the major semi-final and the grand final.
"Some of our sponsors aren't sure they're going to stay on board because they don't know what's happening either - the pub doesn't know how many home games we'll have, and we've already lost money because we've missed the discounts for ordering jumpers," he said.
Press was also uncertain as to the logic behind the time and location of the meeting.
"There's been no consultation with us about that, we were just told to be there," he said.
"If Terry Quinn has to fly up and land in Armidale, why not have it in Uralla, or even Armidale?
"We're going to struggle to get anyone to even go because there's a Christmas do on down here that we're all involved in.
"We're a town in the bush playing rugby league, and they want to put an end to that.
"If we did go under, it would be very hard for it to come back in Uralla."
Group 19 president Peter Brissett had no comment to make ahead of the meeting.
"We've got the group meeting next weekend where everything will be put into place and I wouldn't want to pre-empt anything from that," he said. Armidale Express

NZ may provide escape route for Wayne Bennett
Roy Masters
WAYNE BENNETT'S position at the Broncos is becoming increasingly untenable, while the appointment of former Brisbane captain, Gorden Tallis to the board of the Cowboys, has blocked any remote chance of the six-times premiership coach moving to Townsville.
Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr, aware a small lobby of Townsville fans want Bennett, moved swiftly on Monday, advising board members of the impending announcement of Tallis's appointment. Bennett and Tallis have fallen out since the retirement of the pugnacious but straight talking second-rower.
Tallis is also a member of the NRL board and sits on the six person body as an appointee of News Ltd, half owners of the NRL. He was recommended to the post by News Ltd heir Lachlan Murdoch, a passionate Broncos fan.
Murdoch was also a champion of Bennett but the publication in News Ltd papers of Bennett's secret payments from a wealthy benefactor imply the 57-year-old coach no longer enjoys Lachlan's protection. Bennett's death warrant at the Broncos was signed the day it was revealed he had entered into a clandestine arrangement with Roosters chairman Nick Politis to coach the Sydney club.
He won his sixth premiership a month later but was still required to front the Broncos board, who made it clear he must leave the club at the end of 2009.
Relations with directors have soured since then, with the board forced to carry out its own inquiry into rumours Bennett was planning to head north to Townsville.
News Ltd executive Peter Jourdain, a member of the Broncos board, checked it out with Cowboys chairman Laurence Lancini and Parr and was assured they had no plans to move on Bennett.
The subsequent appointment of Tallis to the Cowboys board guarantees this. Although News Ltd no longer owns the Townsville-based team, having sold the franchise to the Cowboys Leagues Club, it still maintains an influence at board level. Bennett's future may be in New Zealand, where officials were impressed with his coaching of the All Golds on their recent tour of England.
"The Kiwis will pick him up," one of the Thoroughbreds, a group of wealthy Broncos benefactors, said. "They are even considering removing the rule which stipulates the Kiwi coach must be a resident of New Zealand, in order to accommodate Wayne." (The NZRL introduced the residency rule in order to block former Kiwi halfback Gary Freeman, who is based in Sydney).
Bennett's immediate future with the Broncos must be uncertain. News Ltd, which owns 67 per cent of the shares in the publicly listed company, doesn't want him. Club chief executive Bruno Cullen is finding it increasingly difficult to work with Bennett, the club's only coach in its 20-year history.
The Broncos board, all News Ltd appointees, fear Bennett is too close to the Thoroughbreds, who are keen to buy the club.
Bennett's admission he accepted a $1m payment over 10 years from a Thoroughbred benefactor, Ken Talbot, will anger past and present Broncos players, some of whom have accepted - at Bennett's behest - less money to remain with the club.
International prop Petero Civoniceva has moved to Penrith for less money than the Broncos could pay under salary cap constraints.
Bennett's relationship with past captains, other than Tallis, has also deteriorated and former Broncos prop Andrew Gee has moved from the post of football manager to a commercial position in the club where he is distanced from Bennett.
Bennett also was forced to sack three club greats, Gary Belcher, Glenn Lazarus and Kevin Walters, as assistant coaches.
Bennett's $980,000 package from the Broncos included paying the salaries of his assistants.
The publication in News Ltd papers of Bennett's financial dealings with Talbot, who has been charged with bribing a former Queensland Government minister, will embarrass the former Queensland Father of the Year who turns 58 on New Year's day.
Bennett is anxious to provide disabled facilities at both his Brisbane home and Warwick farm for his intellectually disadvantaged son and physically disadvantaged daughter, ensuring they are cared for when he retires.
Should Bennett leave the Broncos, the club won't get their preferred choice for possibly three years. Cullen admires Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy, a former assistant of Bennett in Brisbane. However, the premiership coach is expected to remain with the Storm until its new stadium opens in 2010, unless News Ltd, owner of both clubs, convince Bellamy he should move north to rescue Lachlan's team. The coach-go-round
By Nick Walshaw
GRAHAM Murray hates making the call. Especially when it happens more than once a year. But dial the number he always does.
"Because coaches feel for each other, definitely,'' Murray explains. "And that's why I've called up a number of blokes over the years after they've been sacked. Blokes I've played against, guys I've respected from afar ... you just give them a call and say, "How you going mate?'''
How you going mate? It's the dreaded line that up to a dozen coaches, including Murray, are already being linked to some 94 days out from the 2008 centenary kick-off.
Right now, five NRL coaches remain unsigned beyond this season - Nathan Brown, Steve Folkes, Tim Sheens, Ricky Stuart and Murray - with another four under more pressure than an Oprah Winfrey bedspring.
The Daily Telegraph can also reveal that former Kangaroo David Fairleigh is suddenly in the running for the top job at St George Illawarra while Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes apparently has only six weeks to prove his worth.
And these are just the latest instalments to a rumour mill that continues spreading quicker than a Moree backline with all the McGrady brothers involved. There's Wayne Bennett to Townsville, Ricky Stuart to Canberra and St Helens boss Daniel Anderson supposedly taking the reins at every joint in between.
Murray, the NSW coach just months ago, is now fighting to keep his job while Brian Smith is still trying to win over an entire city. And if going bald isn't punishment enough for poor old Brownie, well, now he has up to half a dozen coaches coveting his gig.
Michael Potter, Ian Millward, Wayne Bennett, Daniel Anderson, Tim Sheens, Ricky Stuart, Dave Fairleigh ... not even Alabama lynch mobs look this imposing.
"But all that media stuff, that's not what gives you the sleepless nights,'' Murray shrugs. "That doesn't really happen until the season starts.''
So why would anyone want to be a coach?
Sure, you get the free tickets, bumper income and champion signature book for your kids. But there's also the endless pressures that have even a grand final coach such as Dessie Hasler wired from up to 20 coffee hits each day.
"Anyone who takes up coaching as a job ... mate, it just doesn't work like that,'' Panthers boss Matthew Elliott concedes. "There's no clock-on, no clock-off, the job consumes you.''
Of course, it wasn't always this way.
Just ask St George legend Norm Provan, the lanky Dragons forward who was captain-coach during four of their famous 11 consecutive premierships.
"What was our secret? Mate, we had nothin','' Provan laughs. "No video, no assistants, no spying ... we just got together and talked about what each of us knew about the other team.
"And that's why I feel so sorry for coaches these days. Why they'll keep jumping from club to club, too. Because there's just too much pressure on them.''
Certainly this would explain why one particular NRL coach has gone to ground recently, refusing to return calls from anyone in the press.
Or maybe he's just being polite ... and keeping the line free for Muzza.Read more Daily Telegraph
