Latest News2008 World Cup set to attract enormous TV audiences
The 2008 Rugby League World Cup is set to attract the biggest television audiences in the tournament's 54-year history with live coverage into the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.
It will also break new ground in being the first to be broadcast live on internet platforms after joining with Telstra in the area of New Media.
The interest building in Rugby League World Cup XIII has already been made clear with Britain's Sky Sports, New Zealand's Sky Sport, Showtime in the Middle East and Samoa in the Pacific each electing to show final qualifying matches.
As the Rugby League World Cup heads to Australia for the first time since 1977, Australian free to air rights holder the Nine Network is preparing to telecast all 'Super Pool' matches next year, the semi-finals and Final from October 25 and November 22.
Sky Sports will telecast all 18 games live into the UK, taking in telecasts from 12 different venues.
Sky TV New Zealand will also take in all 18 games live as well as next-day replay and highlights programmes.
Showtime has secured the rights to all 18 games for the Middle East as Cup hopefuls Lebanon still battle for a World Cup berth.
Rugby League International Federation Chairman and RLWC '08 Tournament Director, Mr Colin Love AM, said: "No sport can make you feel part of the action quite like Rugby League and there is no more intense or prestigious arena than the international game.
"The format of the competition means that we will see teams with a real chance of causing an upset in almost every game.
"It is going to provide some great television viewing and the pleasing thing is that we are still receiving considerable interest from further prospective broadcast partners."

2008 World Cup designed to leave a lasting legacy The 2008 World Cup has been designed to leave a lasting legacy for rugby league, it was claimed at Tuesday's United Kingdom launch. Australia are staging the 13th World Cup next autumn to help celebrate the centenary of the game Down Under. It will be the first time they have acted as hosts for more than 30 years.
"We are dedicated to building a legacy for the future of the game," tournament director Colin Love told a press conference in Leeds.
Tickets for the 18 matches, which will be staged at 12 different venues from Townsville to Melbourne, will go on sale until today but Love says he has been "staggered" by the interest shown so far by British fans.
"We are very confident there will be huge numbers attending the event," he said. "We have been staggered by the response so far in the UK."
Richard Lewis, the Rugby Football League's executive chairman who is vice-chairman of the International Federation, said the lessons of the last World Cup, which almost crippled the game in this country, had been learned in the planning for 2008. Read more Sporting Life

Who needs enemies with friends like this? Gary Kemble may be out of his depth, but Graham Lowe has got to be off his rocker. Long are the jokes about sports club owners and chairmen offering unqualified support for beleaguered managers. Invariably it is seen as the kiss of death.
Unfair, I've always felt, because what else is a chairman supposed to say?
Good old Lowie, the New Zealand Rugby League football manager, has taken completely the opposite tack over Kemble's position as Kiwi coach. Among his comments of limited support, he reckoned Kemble was out of his depth and showing his inexperience. Kapow - now that's a real kiss of death.
A team with little faith in its coach now finds he has been well and truly nobbled by the man who presumably helped to appoint him. How Kemble got the job in the first place beats me - he has no record at all to speak of. As for his likely replacement, as I've already stated this week, who would know?
There isn't exactly a line of brilliant New Zealand candidates with surefire records out there. Melbourne's Steve Kearney perhaps. Or will the Bring Back Bluey signs go up?
First, the NZRL must scrap its residency rule for coaches. While a home-based coach may be ideal in an ideal world, it's a bizarre shackle to put on oneself when the only professional competitions are overseas. The NZRL has to be able to consider the overseas option if it is going to get out of this mess. Read more NZ Herald

Gary Kemble has few options for third test He needs to change players but the only ones available are inexperienced and inexperience is his problem. Kemble has already indicated he will alter the 17 for the third test against the Lions at Hull but will have done little to settle the nerves of the squad with his statement that some are not stepping up, are not at international level and will be told so in one-on-ones in coming days.
The players had a "think tank" after the 44-0 hiding at Hull and provided feedback as to why that happened plus a vote of confidence in the coaching staff, Kemble said.
"Roy [captain Asotasi] and the core players have put their full backing to the coaching and management team. We're a close-knit unit. We have to stay tight and that's what they want to do.
"They let themselves down, they know that. They have put the blame on themselves, no one else. They just thought that their attitude wasn't good out on the field.
"Everything leading up to it as far as they were concerned was good, so they've addressed that and we have to work to make sure they step up."
Kemble is staring at a fourth straight defeat since he took over from Brian McClennan mid-year - Great Britain are simply too good. If the New Zealand Rugby League sticks with its contract requirement that Kemble win 75 per cent of his games, he's done. That was always a ridiculous mark given that the Kiwis win around 25 per cent of their games against the Kangaroos (28/112) and 36 per cent (39/109) against Great Britain. Read more NZ Herald

Petersen leads his nation QUESTION: What do Olympian Carl Lewis, comedienne Roseanne Barr and Gold Coast winger Matt Petersen have in common? ANSWER: They've all been accused of singing The Star Spangled Banner very, very badly.
"Oh, my singing of the American national anthem, mate, patchy at best,'' Petersen laughs. "But thankfully I've still got a few days before our big game. And I'll be using as many hours as possible to brush up.''
Petersen, the woolly NRL cult figure from Western Australia, is among more than 50 NRL and English Super League stars still chasing a start with 2008 World Cup minnow nations. The 27-year-old is the shock choice to skipper the American Tomahawks in their qualifier against Samoa on Friday.

Rugby Union ban for Fiji Bati elite players THE Fiji National Rugby League has banned its elite players from switching codes to union in the off season in a bid to get them in shape for the World Cup trials early next year. The FNRL is taking a serious approach for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup to be played in Australia from October 25 to November 22.
Fiji Bati team manager Rusiate Ratakele said the elite players have been given specific training programs to work on in the off season. He said fitness test would be conducted at end of each month. Ratakele said disciplinary action would be taken against players who defy the FNRL directive.
"We cannot afford any of the players in the elite squad to be injured before the season starts next year. This is why we have stopped them from playing rugby union. Ratakele said. Fiji Times

NZ Warriors to manage fans with web-based CRM The NZ Warriors rugby league franchise plans to install a new CRM system next year, using StayinFront software that is being rolled out across all the clubs in the National Rugby League (NRL). Vodafone Warriors membership manager Leon Marsh says the Auckland club plans to run the StayinFront system in tandem with its existing system, as a trial, for the first few months. Marsh says a successful 2007 season is expected to lead to an increase in season and corporate members in 2008. Computerworld

Call in Bennett to help out Kemble Don't panic, under-the-cosh Kiwis fans. Critics are now calling for Kemble's head. But he should not be sacked - just given more help. Brisbane Broncos legend Wayne Bennett earned huge wraps for his work with the All Golds in the commemorative match against Britain's Northern Union team. New Zealand Rugby League rules preclude the appointment of an overseas-based head coach. But why not appoint Bennett as technical adviser to the current coaching team? Press NZ

RUGBY LEAGUE COACHING MANUALS - Extract from RLCM eBook - An Approach To Coaching Rugby League
By Ray Unsworth
Page 14 - Game Based Training
......realistic and enjoyable context, other than practising them in isolation, ultimately should develop a greater understanding of the game being played.
This approach to coaching is 'game centred' rather than 'technique centred'.
Whilst most traditional coaching sessions in the past have focused on the practice of techniques, the game sense session uses the game as its focus and by using this approach players are challenged to think about what they are actually doing, and why they are doing it.
With regard to the development of technique, then it is developed at the right time within situations that take place in the game.
Coaches, for many years, have used drills based skills and activities to develop our young players.
There are countless coaching manuals and videos on the market that have thousands of drills in them mimicking every possible skill.
However, just how effective are they in achieving our desired outcomes as coaches and more importantly how relative are they to the game?
In examining drills based coaching, we need to be comfortable in our response to certain questions.
Through the use of a series of skills drills, are we really teaching our players to play the game?
How do the drills we use contribute to or transfer to, on field skill? Do they contain the variants that actually occur during the game or are we realistically, just using them as activities and 'fillers' at training?
Rugby League is a great game and I'm sure you do not need me to convince you of that.
However, have you ever taken the time out to consider just what the real attraction to the young players involved is? And in doing so, also to consider or try to recall, the number of times at training that your players have asked this question, "Hey coach; when can we have a game?"
Actually, it's within this simple and frequently made request that leads us to just exactly what the game's major attraction is.
It's the game itself.
Kids want to play. If we further consider this then it should also tell us that within the game we actually have the ideal learning environment for our players, because their motivation to learn, comes from play or in situations that bare a direct relevance to 'the game'. Therefore our job as coaches is to replicate and facilitate that learning.
The concept known as 'game sense' is an approach to coaching that uses the playing of games to be the major focus of each practice session. By concentrating on the game (not necessarily the full game), players will develop in a number of ways including an increased tactical awareness and therefore will be able to make better decisions during the game.
Players will start to think more strategically about game concepts and by developing skills within a............" Join the RLCM Monthly Club and receive 4 DVD's/CD's monthly. Click Order Form .
