Steve Folkes - Canterbury Bulldogs Coach
......clichés often represent a lack of mental preparation on the side of the losing team, resulting more often than not in a horrible thrashing.
So what can the coach do to ensure his team will be 'on-song' come kick off?
Steve Folkes says, " I believe a player's mental preparation, as with their physical preparation, can change from week to week depending on who you are playing against and how you went the previous week.
"There is always a defensive element in our training during the week and if there are areas we need to improve on then we will focus a little more on that.
"It should go the same way with the mental side of things as well.
"They key is to stay on top of the player's attitude and address it as soon as it becomes a concern.
"If you leave it until Sunday, it's too late. The attitude affects everything, but particularly your defence.
"You need to be defending the way you want to play.
"We try to defend aggressively and pro-actively".
Folkes also has some tips on what the coach should be looking out for as he watches his team during the opening half of the match.
"Defensively you need to make sure that everyone is doing the little things correctly so they are working as a team and there is good communication between individuals.
"Sometimes it happens better than others and you need to keep an eye open to address it if bad habits begin creeping in.
"Primarily while I'm watching the game I think I am watching our players but I'm obviously keeping an eye open for the players from the opposition that are causing us concern.
"For example, if they were getting some good go-forward from their dummy half that would be something I would give my players a rev up about during the break.
"I would speak about the need to dominate the ruck, about markers getting quickly to their feet, and working hard without rests.
"Halftime is generally too late to start introducing new plays. Your planning should be completed before kick off but at halftime you can remind players about some of their personal goals they set.
"Perhaps they have set themselves the target of making 140 metres during the match, average play the ball time of 2.5 seconds or whatever.
"It can be helpful to remind them of their individual goal so every time he's running it up or playing the ball in the second half he's going to be thinking about his goal.
"My halftime routine varies from week to week and depends on how we've performed in the first half.
"By the time I get down from the grandstand the players have probably been in the shed for two or three minutes and I think they need that time to get their breath and get any medical things seen to. Once that has been taken care of I generally give my messages, short and to the point.
"If something's drastically wrong, it's probably an attitude thing, and if the game's close, we maybe just need to tweak a couple of things".
"Keeping things short and to the point is a tactic Folkes encourages all coaches to try with their team, particularly in the hour or two leading up to kick-off.
"If you give a player too much information he'll get confused. Most times before a game I only talk for about two or three minutes.
"In the hour or two before that I get around and see the players individually, ask them what their goals are for the day that we would have already discussed earlier in the week, so that I know they have been thinking about their jobs.
"We might discuss a few things as a team as we get closer to the match but the shorter your messages................" receive four resources each month click for RLCM Order Form

Silly season under way
By Dean Ritchie
BY the time you read this story, your favourite NRL player could be getting poached by a rival club for 2009 - and there's nothing the NRL club can do about it.
November 1 signals the beginning of rugby league's silly season, when NRL agents begin negotiating with players for 2009 - four months before the 2008 season starts.
Player managers will this morning begin officially circulating their lists of off-contract players for 2009 and beyond.
Standard NRL playing contracts kick in today and will all expire on October 31 next year, meaning the race is now on between clubs to recruit for 2009. Agents are even predicting some players could decide their futures before Christmas, although a player's incumbent club cannot officially drop out of the race until May 31.
Some of the players on offer for 2009 include Brett Finch, Steve Bell, Tonie Carroll, Carl Webb, Luke Douglas, Kurt Gidley, Steve Price, Luke Lewis, Anthony Tupou, Mark Minichiello, Taniela Tuiaki, Jeff Lima, Sam Perrett, Jeremy Smith (Storm), Jamie Soward, Keith Galloway, Matt Cooper, Jacob Lillyman, Nathan Smith, Frank Puletua, Aaron Payne, Luke Rooney and Luke Covell.
"Some clubs are very mindful of the November date, particularly in regards to marquee assets," player agent George Mimis said.
"Other clubs though are yet to recognise the importance of the day."
Manager Steve Gillis said it marked the start of the race to sign rugby league's elite.
"Players agents and clients can meet and discuss openly deals for 2009," Gillis said.
"We are expecting player agents to position themselves earlier than usual.
"There is the possibility that two more English clubs will be in for 2009, meaning in the next 12 months there will be an unusually high amount of player movement.
"We are expecting movement earlier than usual."
Bowen has not re-signed with North Queensland before the deadline.
"We were never nervous about the old June 30 deadline and the November 1 date doesn't have us spooked either," Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr said.
"We are very confident that we will put together a very good offer, just like we will for Carl Webb and Aaron Payne."
Player manager Allan Gainey said that after today, clubs could begin "forward planning."
"Clubs are mainly looking at lists from agents as to who will be available for 2009," Gainey said.
"They can then sit back watch. They mightn't necessarily rush out an make offers but it's more to do with forward planning."
NRL chief executive David Gallop stressed there was no official deadline with any player able to talk to clubs at any time of the season.
"They can negotiate at any time," Gallop said. Read more Daily Telegraph

Bulldogs release Willie Mason
Andrew Webster
THE Bulldogs will release jaded superstar Willie Mason from the final two years of his lucrative contract after the club rejected his request to fight in a professional boxing bout next year.
On the same day the club was forced to deny reports that chief executive Malcolm Noad was poised to be sacked, Mason was last night drinking at a Woolloomooloo restaurant and telling teammates he had played his last game for the Bulldogs.
Mason is livid that he could be fined for not attending a function on grand final day - although the club scoffed at his claims that he is facing a $50,000 reprimand. Read more League HQ

Gary Kemble not feeling the pressure
By Ben Sullivan
New Zealand coach Gary Kemble insists he is not feeling the pressure despite coming in for some heavy criticism back home.
The coach has come under fire after suffering defeats in his first two matches since taking over from Brian McLennan - a 58-0 hiding by Australia and then a 20-14 defeat to Great Britain in the first Test last week.
Defeat at Hull on Saturday would consign the Kiwis to their first series defeat by the Lions since 1993, but Kemble is adamant he is not feeling the heat.
"I am doing the best I can and I am very confident in the ability I've got, so I don't worry about those sort of things," he told Sky Sports News.
"It comes down to success and once we've gained success, you put all those theories to sleep."
And he is well aware that a win at the KC Stadium will quickly get the critics off his back.
"Winning this weekend is what it is all about," he added. "We can't say anything until we have success.
"You can make all the excuses you want - we have got a full team back at home, with a lot of experience back at home. We have got a young team here but hey, they are playing for their country. It is country on country and we have to win."

CRGT Northern Pride in Cairns, launches Academy
The CRGT Northern Pride on Wednesday announced the club will undertake an Academy program to assist in the development of local players in the region.
The Academy program will run from the 6th November to the 21st December, 2007 with all Academy members training with the CRGT Northern Pride senior side.
The players will be encouraged to attend 2 sessions per week, however due to the fact that players from outlying areas may have difficulty with travel, the CRGT Northern Pride have made 1 training session per week compulsory for all invited Academy players.
Head Coach Andrew Dunemann made the announcement today to make it clear that the club is committed to assisting in the development of the talented youth in the region; "The whole purpose of the program is to further improve the standards of rugby league in this region and provide a pathway for the 16-20 year age group into the NRL without having to pack up and relocate.
"We are hoping this program will keep young players in this region longer, hence improving the overall standards.
"The aim is to send the players back to their clubs as better skilled players and thereby assist in lifting the already high standard of the local league."
The program will be headed up by CRGT Northern Pride Assistant Coach Troy Cummings with the Academy undertaking a camp on the Tablelands on the 1st and 2nd of December 2007.
Dunemann also added, "The program is to be reassessed after speaking to Club Presidents in the coming weeks for the post Christmas period and into the season.
"We are mindful of the fact the boys will be playing a lot of football in season and I feel that is why it is important to develop strong ties with the local clubs and work alongside each other.
"At the end of the day we are developing these players to play at a higher standard and we shouldn't lose sight of that, whether it be at a local club level or for the Pride.
"We will be working closely with the local QRL and ARL development officers in assisting jointly in other development programs which we will be announcing in the coming weeks." Northern Pride
Commemorative $1 coin released for Centenary of the game
It is a rare tribute reserved for the truly great moments in Australian sport, and the Centenary of Rugby League has been honoured with that status.
The Royal Australian Mint unveiled a first for Rugby League by releasing a commemorative $1 coin celebrating the Centenary of the game in Australia.
NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, ARL Chief Executive, Mr Geoff Carr, and Raiders captain, Mr Alan Tongue, were among the guests at the launch at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra.
The first dedicated Rugby League coin the Royal Australian Mint has produced features the Centenary of Rugby League logo in a design that represents the game's anniversary theme of 'inspiring the future'.
While the coin is legal tender, it won't be released into general circulation, making it a valuable and sought-after memento for coin collectors around the world as well as for Rugby League fans seeking a unique piece of Centenary memorabilia.
"Commemorative coins have marked some of the landmark events in Australian history and it's a tribute to the game that the Centenary of Rugby League is being included in that company," Mr Gallop said.
"It is a unique collectible for fans and a symbol of the significant place Rugby League holds in our community."
Mr Carr added: "The Centenary is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration and a tribute like this reflects the importance it holds for Rugby League fans across the country.
"We thank the Royal Australian Mint for this honour."
Janine Murphy, the Chief Executive of the Royal Australian Mint, said: "Rugby League is one of Australia's favourite sports whether you are a player, or spectator.
"It is steeped in tradition, with great players and great matches becoming part of Australia's folklore.
"The Royal Australian is therefore thrilled to mark the Centenary of this great game through the release of this specially designed coin.
"The Royal Australian Mint is honouring this significant sporting milestone because we recognise the important role Rugby League has played in the Australian community and culture over the last 100 years.
"The Royal Australian Mint is very proud of this first coin in a series commemorating the Centenary of Rugby League.
"Coin collectors and gift purchasers will need to stay tuned in early 2008 to see what our next coin in the Centenary of Rugby League series has to offer."
The coin, which sells for $12.95, will be released November 1. ARL Online
Watch the qualifying stages of World Cup on your PC this weekend
Rugby League fans in Britain New Zealand and Australia will from this weekend be able to watch the final qualifying stages for next year's World Cup in Australia.
Big Pond will break new ground in Australia with live webcasts of the final five qualifying matches on BigPond's League TV at bigpondtv.com/leaguetv including this Saturday's game between Lebanon and Ireland in Dewsbury and Sunday's match between Scotland and Wales in Glasgow.
Britain's Sky Sports is carrying each game live as are New Zealand's Sky Sport, and the Middle East's Showtime.
Just three positions remain to be decided for Rugby League World Cup XIII.
Lebanon would require a win to unseat an impressive Ireland team as the winner of European Group Pool 1, and their form against Russia last Sunday suggests that is not out of the question.
Scotland and Wales are in an even closer battle for supremacy in European Group Pool 2, to the extent that organizers have already declared the right to move to 'extra time golden point' should the pool be tied. Wales needs an eight point win to topple the Scots as 'pool leaders'.
The winners of each pool will fill two of the final three spots in World Cup XIII to play in Australia from October 25 to November 22.
The losers will enter a repechage along with Samoa and the USA to determine the final berth which will be decided at Featherstone on November 14.
Pacific Island broadcasters have already committed to join the existing broadcast partners to televise the repechage semi-final on Friday, November 9 and the repechage final on Wednesday, 14 November.
"The interest in the qualifying games from broadcasters has been unprecedented and it certainly reflects the intense level of interest that is building around the tournament," Rugby League International Federation Chairman and World Cup Tournament Director, Mr Colin Love AM, said.
"The fact that audiences in England, Australia and New Zealand will be able to see the final qualifiers is a real bonus for the tournament and for Rugby League supporters.
"The inclusion of Big Pond's live webcast is another significant step with Big Pond providing an exciting broadcast platform."
Telstra Big Pond will broadcast the five World Cup qualification matches live on www.bigpondtv.com/
The schedule will be in line be the kick-off of the matches and be transmitted at the same time as the Sky Sports, Samoan, Showtime and Sky Sport (NZ) telecasts.
