The Halftime Talk

By Kurt Wrigley

Rugby League, unlike other sports, has only one official break where the team can be addressed collectively during the game - at halftime.

The coach has to ensure that this small window of time is used effectively to either consolidate or try to change certain aspects of the game. It can be of vital importance to the success of the team that the coaches message is transferred clearly and concisely.

Over the years observation of coaches at different levels has resulted in the following phases being identified :

1. Preparation

. If a dressing room is not available, find somewhere in the shade away from the sideline
. Stand where there is nothing going on the background - crowd, sun, kids kicking footy
. If there is a dressing room, clear other teams and players
. Have ancillary things done first, eg drinks, injuries attended, wet towels, tape
. Clear the room of people not needed so there are few distractions - parents, trainers, gear people
. Ensure you have the attention of all players - make eye contact
. Squat down closer to eye level if they are sitting on the ground
. Make short notes during the game (no more than 5) which can be referred to later

2. Delivery

. Don't give too much information - players won't remember it
. Encourage players by emphasising both positives and negatives.

Alternate your positive and negative comments, this is called the 'sandwich effect'.
. Avoid criticising an individual for poor play, have a short one on one talk before he returns to the field
. Don't let all players talk at once, after you've made your points ask for comments from the captain or key players
. Get acknowledgment from the players when you make your point - nodding of the head
. Use change of voice tone and hand movements to emphasis a point - avoid yelling and screaming
. Remain calm especially in pressure situations - if you don't appear in control your players won't
. Be specific with the words you use. The speech is obviously the focal point of the half time break so try to avoid words and phrases, which are emotional and very ambiguous.

Some examples encounted over the years include:
"Come on guys, lets dig deep!"
"Come on, Have a go!"
"What's going on out there?"
"Start playing smart"
"Let's get into the game"
"Our tackling is terrible"
"Let's get out there and play well"

Coaches will have heard these and similar phrases before. These statements might sound encouraging, but give the team no real useful feedback.

Messages that are more useful are words/phrases that Call to Action.

Some examples are included at the end of the article.

Half-time instructions that highlight a negative result can be delivered in a more positive way.

Not mentioning the action you wish to avoid focusses the players' attention on the positive. For example, everyone has heard a coach say, "Don't panic out there".

Merely mentioning the word "Panic" can conjure thoughts of hysteria and lack of control. It would be better to say "Stay controlled and relax out there".

In other words tell what to do or what action you are looking for NOT what they shouldn''t do.

As an exercise, think of a positive way of saying these negative instructions.

. No missed tackles
. Don't give them a sniff
. Don't be complacent
. Don't be lazy at marker
. Don't allow them to offload
. No bad passes

3. Summary

. Just before the players run out, the coach should reiterate the main points even more concisely
. Announce any changes for the 2nd half team - It is useful to read out all the positions to avoid confusion
. Speak to key players/captain individually on how they can improve the performance of the team
. Wish them good luck - remain positive and believe in the players..........Join the RLCM Monthly Club and receive 4 DVD's/CD's monthly, two current and two back resources.

Can the Kiwis have Bennett?

By Barry Dick

Interesting to see former New Zealand league great Hugh McGahan pleading for Broncos coach Wayne Bennett to take over the Kiwis before next year's World Cup
Read the report.

Interesting because the NZRL has a rule that their coach has to live in NZ and that would be rather difficult for Bennett, wouldn't it?

And he's contracted to the Broncos for another two seasons so would have to get their permission to become involved with Test football again.

My tip is Bennett would be far more likely to accept a consultancy role with the Kiwis because I reckon he'll be far too busy over the next two years sorting out a few ``issues'' at the Broncos.

I'm also tipping that the power struggle at Red Hill will leave any on-field action in the next two season for dead. Read more

Federal Labor pledges $3m to help upgrade Leichhardt Oval

Federal Labor has pledged $3 million to help upgrade Leichhardt Oval, the home ground of the Wests Tigers NRL club, in inner-west Sydney if it wins government.

The money would go towards increased seating, ground resurfacing and drainage, improved public amenities and catering facilities, and the development of corporate and media facilities.

Opposition infrastructure spokesman Anthony Albanese said the funding would also help mark the centenary of Australia's first rugby league game, played at nearby Birchgrove Oval in 1908.

He said Leichhardt was not only the home ground of Wests Tigers NRL club, which incorporates the Balmain Tigers and Wests Magpies, but was used by about 100,000 people annually for other purposes.

He said the upgrade would enable the team to play more home games at the ground and provide opportunities for other events.

"Leichhardt Oval offers an affordable and accessible option for a wide range of users," Mr Albanese said today.

"Labor's support is an appropriate way for us to commemorate Balmain's centenary and to recognise the important role that Balmain and Wests Tigers have played in providing a focus for the local community."

The Tigers currently share home games between Leichhardt Oval, nearby Telstra Stadium at Homebush, and Campbelltown Sports Stadium in Sydney's southwest.

The NSW Government and Leichhardt Council have already offered financial support for Leichhardt Oval's upgrade program. The Australian

Laurie Daley coach of the Country Origin 2008

The Country Rugby League (CRL) has today appointed Laurie Daley as coach of the Country Origin team for 2008.

Daley will take over the Country Origin head coaching position from Craig Bellamy, who was recently appointed as the NSW Wizard Blues coach.

Daley, who played 23 State of Origin matches for NSW during a stellar playing career and was the Blues assistant coach from 2002-06, said he was looking forward to the challenge of his first senior head coaching role.

"It's an honour to coach the Country side," Daley said today.

"I have fond memories of playing for Country and it was always a proud moment to pull the jersey on.

"To be coaching the side, particularly during the game's Centenary year, is very exciting and I'm just honoured to be given the opportunity."

Daley's appointment comes with the understanding from his employer in television network Channel Nine.

CRL General Manager Terry Quinn said Daley's experience as assistant coach for the NSW Wizard Blues and his knowledge of the game made him an easy choice.

"Laurie's got that aura about him, having played for his state and country, which we believe extends to his talents as a coach," Quinn said today.

"He is widely respected for his knowledge and analysis of the game, has had plenty of experience with elite representative teams in his time with the Blues, and is passionate about the Country jumper, so we are very pleased to have him on board as Country coach."

The annual City v Country Origin match is scheduled for Friday, May 2, 2008 at Wollongong's WIN Stadium. NSWCRL

Wales 50 defeated Papua New Guinea 10

Iestyn Harris ended a seven-year itch by helping Wales to a 50-10 victory over Papua New Guinea and immediately set his sights on the 2008 World Cup.

The Bradford Bulls stand-off linked up with Warrington captain Lee Briers for the first time since the last World Cup in 2000 and was the inspiration behind their nine-try rout of the islanders in Bridgend.

It was the perfect preparation for Sunday's crucial World Cup qualifying tie against Scotland in Glasgow, where Wales need to overturn a seven-point deficit from the first leg to book their trip to Australia.

"I was pleased with the game," said Harris, who kicked five of his side's seven conversions.

"But we've got a lot of work to do before next week's game - it's going to be tough to overcome a seven-point deficit.

"I was disappointed to be injured for last year's Scotland match but this year I've had three or four weeks' rest, so I'm raring to go.

"It was good to pull on the Welsh jersey once again. It's been a long time."

Wales were behind only once in the match after their opponents, skippered by Salford full-back John Wilshere, took a 6-0 lead through second row George Moni in the opening minutes.

Once they found their feet, the Welsh took command with loose forward Phil Joseph, wing Dave Halley and substitute Damien Gibson all going over for tries before half-time.

And they went into overdrive in the second half with six further touchdowns from Gibson, Rob Roberts, Matt James, Halley again, Sean Penkywicz and Mark Lennon.

Wales coach Martin Hall was delighted with his side's display and refused to single out any individual.

"When you score 50 points in an international, it's more than one player that's played well," he said. "It's a good team performance.

"I think everyone anticipated a closer game but we played well. Papua New Guinea are a good side - they held an Australian team on their own patch a few weeks ago so we needed to do well and we did.

"Today was an important game but it's nothing compared to next week. There was a lot of pride and passion shown in the Welsh shirt and, if we can do that again next week, then we should complete our job."

Both Scotland and Wales have agreed that extra time and, if necessary, a 'golden point' will be used if the aggregate scores are level after Sunday's return qualifying match.

The Scots, who won 21-14 in Bridgend last October, lost 46-16 to France in their friendly in Perpignan on Saturday, while Lebanon warmed up for Friday's crunch World Cup qualifier with Ireland by crushing Russia 48-0 in Moscow. Read more Sporting Life
British Police 16 - New Zealand Police 28

Staningley Rugby Club was the venue of the first game in the "Mears -Holding" Test Series where the British Police played the New Zealand Police in a thrilling game on a fine October evening. The air was tense in this first game and expectations high from both teams.

The Kiwis had been in camp for the last four days and were looking sharp, the British squad had been long awaiting their counterparts from down under and ready to meet the challenge. The plentiful crowd were rewarded with the traditional pre-match Haka and following the first whistle the points quickly came.

Within the first few minutes with a well taken pass to strong running British Centre Andy Eastham who finished in style on the right hand side bouncing off two would be Kiwi tacklers. Dan Atherton missed the conversion from wide out 4-0.

Following the re-start the Kiwis came back strong and following some British ill discipline in their own quarter saw Kiwi number 8 Mark Toelau take a crash ball under the sticks. This was converted for them totake the lead 6-4.

The Kiwis maintained the pressure on the British defence whose ill discipline again opens the gates to the Kiwi attack, a fine play saw the ball quickly moved to their left and several missed tackles allowed them to touch down in the corner, missed conversion 10-4.

The GB team amassed the pressure on the Kiwis with great ball play from Newton and Atherton with superb field kicks and positional play, they were unlucky not to put the game even when a pass to speedy winger Jamie Brentley was deemed to be a forward pass by the days official, Craig Halloran.

The play was brought back for a Kiwi put in and the wide play drew the GB defence allowing another NZ score. This was converted to bringthe half time score to 16-4.

Following the re-start the British indiscpline was again a crucial factor as the Kiwis took the advantage of possession and quickly crossed the whitewash with yet another score wide on the right. The Kiwis were quick to attack the groggy GB defence and a break from the GB quarter saw the Kiwi loose, Allan Lio, made a half field break, close support play and weak defence saw them touch down wide on the right. Converted try 22-4.

The GB fightback kicked in and the game was now on, GB loose Danny Burton made stong running attacks supports by powerful Danny Ambler saw GB team take Kiwi yards and clever field play by half back Adam Newton saw GBfullback Richard Whitehouse touch down under the posts 22-10.

The GB pressure continued with Dan Atherton releasing a great offload to Whitehouse who went in for his second 22-16.

The game was now tense and both teams knew the next score was crucial. The pressure was building and both were looking for gaps and opportunity.T

This was soon to come and it was the Kiwis who again broke away into the GB dangerzone and the support play secures the win 28-16. Final Score 28-16.

RFL UNHAPPY OVER TRAINERS

Another row is brewing between Great Britain and New Zealand with the Rugby Football League seeking formal talks with their counterparts over what they claim is the tourists' over-use of trainers and water carriers in Saturday's opening Test.

The two parties engaged in a war of words on the eve of the Gillette Fusion Series when New Zealand chairman Andrew Chalmers labelled Great Britain forward Adrian Morley a "maniac" and accused the RFL of neglecting player welfare for failing to discipline him for an alleged high tackle.

The RFL responded by accusing the Kiwis of over-stepping the mark and they are now claiming they broke the spirit of the laws regarding non-playing personnel entering the field of play.

This season the RFL clamped down on the use of trainers and water carriers in Super League but international rules are less stringent.

Nigel Wood, the RFL's newly-appointed chief executive, said: "The sight of one, two and sometimes three non-playing personnel scurrying around the pitch, actively and continuously coaching players and directing play is a blight on the game and one which infuriates many supporters.

"It spoils the spectacle and, in many cases, is not appreciated by the players themselves.

"Of course physios need unfettered access and substitutions need to be enacted quickly and smoothly but what we witnessed on Saturday was blatant on-field coaching.

"People are paying good money to watch world-class athletes and don't want a coterie of hangers-on spoiling the game by running on to the pitch every two minutes to bark instructions from the bench.

"That's why on Monday we're going to make a formal request to the NZRL to abide by the rules we have adopted in England." Read more Sporting Life
Sam Perrett error costs Kiwis

By Steve Kilgallon

The Kiwis regained credibility but didn't do enough to win the opening game of their three-match series in Huddersfield, with a terrible error by otherwise impressive fullback Sam Perrett costing them the first test 20-14.

Perrett failed to field a kick to the New Zealand in-goal and instead allowed British wing Gareth Raynor to touch down in the 50th minute to put the British in front, a lead they added to 10 minutes later from debutant 18-year-old prop Sam Burgess.

That 10-point lead was enough for them to hang on, with the Kiwis only replying with five minutes left when the Bradford centre Shontayne Hape scored his second try.

His first, after just four minutes after a neat kick through by halfback Thomas Leuluai demonstrated the Kiwis would be a very different proposition to the side beaten 58-0 by Australia in Wellington a fortnight ago.

A fortuitous try from Paul Whatuira gave them a halftime lead against a try from Britain's Samoan-born forward Maurie Fa'asavalu and two goals from man of the match halfback Rob Burrow.

Great Britain captain Jamie Peacock praised his team's strength of character in the face of the fierce New Zealand pressure.

"We have been in that position and let leads slip, but we have improved over last few years and our character caught the Kiwis out," he told AFP news agency.

Early reports suggested wing Tame Tupou is out for the remainder of the series with ligament damage sustained just before half-time while Epalahame Lauaki may have suffered ankle trouble.

British prop Burgess was placed on report for a high tackle on Fuifui Moimoi.

GREAT BRITAIN 20 (Maurie Fa'asavlu, Gareth Raynor, Sam Burgess tries; Rob Burrow 4 goals) bt NEW ZEALAND 14 (Shontayne Hape 2, P Whaturia tries; Lance Hohaia goal) at Galpharm Stadium, Huddersfield.
