Motivation and Performance by Vic Mellors
Sports Fitness and Motivational Psychologist
Since the age of fifteen, when I read my first Rugby League magazine, I have witnessed time and time again, the huge wastage of money by Rugby League clubs in buying players to build and mould premiership teams.
Through my own experience as a lower grade player in Brisbane during the seventies, I saw players languishing in the lower grades who could have played good football and saved their club a lot of expense.
Unfortunately, the potential of these players was never identified or maximised and a common characteristic was that the big name imports got paid but often never performed.
The aim of these articles which will be serialised over the next four editions, is to give a clear message to coaches at all levels that personality and individual differences have an important and fundamental role in achieving maximum performance in their Rugby League players.
This article will deal with those characteristics that in my opinion contribute to the success or failure of a Rugby League team.
The second part will deal with how the biological foundations of personality contribute to the motivation and performance of each player.
The final two parts will deal with the application of certain cognitive - behavioural principles to help coaches develop a winning culture in their Rugby League teams.
In the modern game, the changes in the rules and the physical demands of the game mean that a player has to adopt a philosophy that is not only based on technical skills and physical ability but also one of extreme psychological resilience.
The rule changes have made the game faster, more physically demanding and more susceptible to pressure and making mistakes.
In semi-finals, it's not just fitness and skill, but mostly, the psychological ability for a team to absorb pressure.
Consequently the psychological characteristics and philosophy of the modern game player should be based on personal autonomy.
Shown in Figure 1 over page are the three factors that contribute to the performance of the Rugby League team i.e. the technical, physical and psychological.
These parameters are clearly defined but they must work in unison for a team to be successful during the season.
The first stage of this paper is to discuss the characteristics of both a successful and unsuccessful team and to explain the notion of "autonomous behaviour".
The idea of this approach is to stipulate that Rugby League is not an "emotional" game but an "intellectual" one.
I hear football commentators and coaches say the Rugby League is all about emotion.
As a former fitness trainer with a number of football clubs, I have seen first hand the disastrous consequences that can occur from a rugby league team that has been too emotional and "psyched up' before a game.
Emotion when used at the right time of a football match can be turned into "positive drive" or motivation. It should be used to intensify such things as hard tackles or strong running at a time that psychologically demoralises the opposition.
Emotion at the wrong time of a football match can make a Rugby League side scattered intellectually and thus riddled with mistakes.
It can place the opposition team in a very advantageous position early in the match by allowing a big lead to be consolidated and thus damaging the self confidence.......... Join the RLCM Monthly Club and receive 4 DVD's/CD's monthly, two current and two back resources.

Minto trio will be hottest property in town
By Brad Walter
JARRYD HAYNE, Israel Folau and Krisnan Inu - the three emerging superstars who grew up together in Minto - are set to be the most sought-after names on the NRL transfer market when clubs can begin negotiating with rival players next week.
Under changes to the anti-tampering laws introduced this year, November 1 has become the new June 30 and clubs are queueing up for talks with the trio for 2009 if Parramatta hasn't secured Hayne and Inu beyond and Folau isn't committed to Melbourne before Wednesday.
With all three having broken into Test football this year, the Eels are likely to struggle to retain both Hayne and Inu, while Folau will command offers worth up to 10 times the $35,000 contract the 18-year-old centre was on at the start of the season when his ambitions were simply to play first grade for the Storm.
"Izzy could have played in the SG Ball [under-18s] competition this season but he ended playing for Australia," Folau's manager Isaac Moses said.
Inu, 20, also made his NRL debut this season. Hayne was the 2006 rookie of the year - an award that Folau won this season.
"I will be meeting with [Melbourne CEO] Brian Waldron in the next week or two and we'll see what happens after that," said Moses, who also manages Inu.
Whether or not Inu stays at Parramatta may depend on what Hayne does, and the 19-year-old NSW and Australian winger's manager Wayne Beavis yesterday emailed Eels boss Denis Fitzgerald to arrange a meeting.
South Sydney CEO Shane Richardson confirmed his club's interest in the son of former Rabbitohs player Manoa Thompson, while Cronulla has also been strongly linked to Hayne following the appointment of long-serving Parramatta football manager Tony Zappia as the new Sharks chief executive.
"We certainly have an interest in Jarryd, he's a great young player and his father has got a history with our club," Richardson said. "But I'm sure there will be 15 other clubs just as keen on him."
Fitzgerald said the Eels, who also have five-eighth Brett Finch coming off contract next season, planned to meet with Beavis and Moses within the next month.
While clubs can approach rival players from November 1, contracts can't be registered with the NRL before round 13 of next season's premiership without the consent of the player's current club, but there will be no shortage of activity over the coming months as several big-name players come off contract next year.
Among them are North Queensland fullback Matt Bowen and St George Illawarra centre Matt Cooper, whom the new owners of Wigan have reportedly targeted as their first high-profile recruit for next season.
When contacted by the Herald, Cooper said he had not received any approach and speculated that if Wigan were interested in his services, it may be for 2009.
Newcastle captain Danny Buderus, his Wests Tigers counterpart Brett Hodgson and Bulldogs halfback Brent Sherwin are other players expected to be in the sights of big-spending Super League clubs.
The Tigers also have Benji Marshall off contract next year, but his agent Martin Tauber said that after undergoing a fifth shoulder operation mid-season, the talented playmaker wanted to get some games under his belt before worrying about a new deal.
"Because he has been seen a few times on the Gold Coast, because he went to school on the Gold Coast and because [former Tigers halfback] Scott Prince plays for the Gold Coast, some people have speculated that Benji might be going there, but we have not spoken to anyone about his playing future," Tauber said.
In contrast, Beavis yesterday met Cowboys officials to start negotiations for Bowen, and he is expected to begin speaking to other clubs from Wednesday.
Manly's Test fullback Brent Stewart is also a free agent after next season if he chooses to exercise a clause in his contract, but the Sea Eagles are negotiating to sign him to a long-term deal.
Other stars off contract next season include Souths winger Nathan Merritt and captain Peter Cusack, Melbourne's Test lock Dallas Johnson, Roosters internationals Braith Anasta and Anthony Tupou, Bulldogs centre Willie Tonga, Penrith's Trent Waterhouse, Luke Lewis and Luke Rooney, Cronulla prop Luke Douglas and Dragons twins Brett and Josh Morris.

Great Britain v New Zealand (+8)
By Ian Millward
Tony Smith's first selection as Great Britain coach is very interesting. Sam Burgess starts at prop and he is in for a fiery introduction to Test match rugby opposite Roy Asotasi, who is probably the best front-row forward in the world right now, and Fuifui Moimoi.
The Great Britain team is very solid in the forwards and the backs pick themselves, there aren't too many options available in those positions.
Going into this game you have to forget the All Golds win over the Northern Union last week. That side was very well marshalled by Stacey Jones, who isn't available for New Zealand. Ruben Wiki and Steve Pryce were also playing for them and the Kiwis don't have that experience to fall back on this time.
In their last full international New Zealand were heavily beaten by Australia at home but again you have to take that game out of the equation. They had a man sent-off in the early exchanges and then lost other key players to injury.
They are strong in the forwards for Saturday's game. Asotasi is all quality while Moimoi is one of the best runners of a ball in world rugby - but can't sustain it for long periods. Simon Mannering and Frank Pitchard in the back-row are very fleet-footed and can play wide or on the edge of the rucks. They are competitive in that department.
The problem for me is at half-back. Lance Hohaia and Thomas Leuluai are not seasoned enough against Rob Burrow and Leon Pryce. This is an area where the visitors could lack cohesion and it will effect them as they look to move around the park.
Britain have a good centre pairing with Keith Senior in good form and Martin Gleeson gaining confidence from a good performance last week. I think the home side will win this one and cover the start of eight points. They have a little more discipline to their game, will play a more regimented style with a greater structure than the visitors. There will be no frills but they will build pressure and slowly take control of the game.
New Zealand will have their moments, keep an eye on Epalahame Lauaki when he comes off the replacements bench as he is a very good attacking player with wonderful ball skills, but overall Britain look too strong. The players will be out to impress their new coach and Adrian Morley and Jamie Peacock are two players who will stand up and be counted.
I see the home side starting well and getting into a good rhythm. Close to the line Pryce is a major threat as he has a very good dummy and go on him. He can come up with something on the edge of the rucks where New Zealand may be a little frail.
With that in mind he makes plenty of appeal at 14/1 with Sky Bet to cross for the first try. Read more Sporting Life

Skilled Park to host Titans trial on March 1
By Luke Turgeon
THE Gold Coast Titans will kick off next season with trial matches in Ipswich, Cairns and their new home at Skilled Park.
With the Titans squad returning to full-time training Monday week (November 5), the club has all but locked in the three games set to ignite their 2008 campaign.
The Titans will take on the Penrith Panthers in Ipswich on February 16, before travelling north to clash with the Cowboys on February 23 and returning home to Robina to line up against the West Tigers on March 1.
There are a few small administration details still to be confirmed for the Ipswich game but it will almost certainly go ahead as planned.
"We had two trials in the Northern Rivers catchment area last year, which was Coffs and Lismore, so that was important in our first year," said the Titans football manager Scott Sattler.
"In year two, it is even more important for the Titans to go to our other areas at the other end of the band, which is Ipswich.
"We are trying to supplement all of our areas we concentrate on."
Adding spice to the second trial against the Cowboys is the fact it will be the first time North Queensland have played another maroon-grown team in a pre-season clash.
It is also shaping as an important game for the Gold Coast, who will open the season proper against the Cowboys in round one.
"It is first time the Cows have trialled against another Queensland team which will be a promoters dream for them up there," said Sattler.
"Then three weeks later we play them in round one.
"It is just the way it has worked out, we didn't know what the draw was going to be and we just went ahead and organised our trials.
"But the way it has worked out is a real appetiser for that first game three weeks after that trial."
Sattler said the club was eagerly awaiting their chance to christen the new stadium against the Tigers.
Following the final trial against Wests Tigers, the Titans will travel to Coffs Harbour for a week-long training camp.
"That first official NRL trial against the Cowboys we will do what we did against Parramatta (last year in the second trial) and make sure that everyone in the squad of 25-30 gets a run of some sort.
"It is a matter of trying to find those combinations. The final trial against the Tigers, you would like to think would be the side that would continue through to round one."
The Titans' Wests Tigers recruit Ben Jeffrey, an explosive young winger, arrived on the Gold Coast yesterday.
Former Penrith prop Matt Cross and former Cowboys winger Brenton Bowen will be flying in on Monday.
Sattler said it was exciting seeing next year's squad start to take shape.
Backrower Luke Swain, Luke Bailey and hooker Nathan Friend have been back in the gym training hard ahead of the official start of the pre-season on November 5.
Matt has stars (and stripes) in his eyes TITANS livewire Matt Petersen will captain the United States of America as they attempt to make history and qualify for the rugby league World Cup next month. The Gold Coast winger will spearhead the Tomahawks campaign against a star-studded Samoa side at Widnes in England on November 9. Read more GC Bulletin
Newtown's newest International - the Man from Ngaruawahia.
Shaun Kenny-Dowall, the powerfully built fullback and centre who played with the Jets in 2006 and 2007, is currently with the New Zealand Kiwis squad touring Great Britain and France.
Shaun played strongly last Saturday in the New Zealand All Golds 25-18 win over the Northern Union XIII at Warrington.
He is a product of the Ngaruawahia RLFC (in the Waikato region), played with the Clovelly Crocodiles JRLFC, gained representation in the Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg team in 2006 and then won National Rugby League selection with the Roosters this year.
Shaun was also Newtown's VB Premier League top try-scorer for the 2007 season, including a sensational haul of four tries against the Bulldogs at Henson Park back in July.
While Shaun is obviously not a direct product of the Newtown RLFC, it can truthfully be said that he has gained top level International Rugby League representative honours in the same year that he has played with the Jets, making him Newtown's first International representative with a major Rugby League country since Phil Sigsworth represented Australia from Newtown back in 1981.
At 19 years of age, Shaun has an enormous future ahead of him. The Newtown RLFC takes great pride in having played its part in the professional development of this fine young player and wishes him great success with the Kiwis on their European tour.
Sam "Mr. Motown" Perrett makes his Test Match debut with the Kiwis on Saturday.
Newtown supporters will well remember Sam Perrett setting up and scoring plenty of tries for the Jets in the 2006 season, prior to his well-deserved promotion into the Sydney Roosters NRL ranks.
He has had a magnificent 2007 season, winning selection in the New Zealand team currently on tour in Great Britain and France, and he will gain the singular honour of making his Test Match debut in the famous black and white playing strip of his native land when the Kiwis take on Great Britain at Huddersfield on Saturday.
Sam is also well-known as the Sydney Roosters answer to Motown's Smokey Robinson. Sam was the lead singer who along with the two Paea brothers, Lopini and Mickey, performed with distinction on the recent Channel Nine Staminade Show Stoppers talent quest, winning thousands of supporters with their classy renditions of several Tamla Motown smash hits.
The Paea Brothers take the South Pacific by storm.
Talking of Lopini and Mickey Paea, the boys along with their brother Lelea have helped the Tongan national Rugby League team to two impressive victories in recent weeks.
The Tongan national team, coached by Jimmy Dymock and including the three Paea brothers and Hermani Moala (the young Roosters player who played Premier League with the Jets this year), annihilated the touring Junior Kangaroos by 44-6 at the Tongan National Stadium in Nuku'alofa.
Two weeks later the Tongan lads followed this up with a thrilling 14-12 win over Fiji in an official Test Match also played in the Tongan capital.
Both Tonga and Fiji will be playing in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup tournament. The Newtown RLFC congratulates the three Paea brothers on their achievements. Newtown Jets Online
Burgess to debut for Great Britain
Sam Burgess will make his Great Britain debut this Saturday after Tony Smith named the young Bulls Star in his 17 man team to face New Zealand in the first Gillette Fusion Test match at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium.
For the eighteen year old Burgess, it caps a remarkable year that has seen him cement his Bradford Bulls first team place, win engage Super League Young Player of the Year and now earn a starting place at prop forward for the Lions against the Kiwis.
Adrian Morley, the blockbusting Warrington Wolves prop, who has been the centre of much controversy this week emanating from the New Zealand camp, starts in the front row alongside Bulls colleagues Terry Newton and debutant Burgess.
From the original 20 man squad the three players to miss out are the Huddersfield Giants duo of Stephen Wild and David Hodgson and Saints' Jon Wilkin.
The squad is:
Paul Wellens (St Helens), Ade Gardner (St Helens), Martin Gleeson (Warrington Wolves), Keith Senior (Leeds Rhinos), Gareth Raynor (Hull FC), Leon Pryce (St Helens), Rob Burrow (Leeds Rhinos), Adrian Morley (Warrington Wolves), Terry Newton (Bradford Bulls), Sam Burgess (Bradford Bulls), Jamie Peacock (Leeds Rhinos),Gareth Ellis (Leeds Rhinos), Kevin Sinfield (Leeds Rhinos).

LYDON: NO NEED FOR RADICAL CHANGES
By Ian Laybourn
Former Central Park hero Joe Lydon insists it will be business as usual as he prepares to become part of the new management team at Wigan.
The 43-year-old former Wigan and Great Britain centre will take up his new role of chief executive on December 1 when Harlequins chairman Ian Lenagan officially becomes the club's new owner.
The two will run the club alongside Brian Noble, who keeps his job as head coach, but Lydon does not envisage wholesale changes.
"I don't think there is a need for radical changes, the only thing that will change is the ownership," he said.
"Before December 1 we need to look at the club and the structure and meet the people, get to know them and hopefully enhance what they do."
Lydon was football manager at Central Park for a brief spell after playing his last game for the club in 1995 and had a stint with the Rugby Football League as their technical and performance director.
He quit the RFL in 2000 to work for the Rugby Football Union and coached England's backs from 2004 to 2006 but eased his way back into the 13-man code by working part-time for Lenagan on the administration at Harlequins.
"I am born and bred in Wigan and never actually left the place," he said. "I always watched for Wigan's results but, as for coming back, you never plan for things like this.
"I always believe that choice and chance will determine your destiny. It was a conscious choice after having a chance meeting with Ian to sit down and discuss it.
"I never planned for it but I'm delighted the opportunity has come up.
"It will be challenging and will stretch me and test me but hopefully I can use the experience that I've gained not just in the last 18 months since I left the RFU but in the last 25 years as a professional rugby player and administrator."
Lydon, who won 20 caps for Great Britain, insists he has no regrets over his six-year stint in rugby union.
"I had a fantastic time," he said.
"It was a different code but the people are the same across the whole of the business and the whole of sport.
"I had some great opportunities and some great experiences with the RFU, including the Commonwealth Games of 2002, the World Cup preparation in 2003 and three Hong Kong titles in the Sevens."
Lenagan, who has acquired an 89 per cent stake in Wigan from Dave Whelan, will succeed Maurice Lindsay as chairman and wind down his commitment to Harlequins, where he holds a 65 per cent majority shareholding. Read more Sporting Life

Seven Rhinos named in the Great Britain squad to face NZ Tony Smith has named seven Leeds Rhinos players in his 25 man squad for this autumn's Gillette Fusion Test Series including Jamie Jones Buchanan who could make his debut against the Kiwis this Saturday at the Galpharm Stadium.
Other Rhinos included in Smith's first full strength squad since he became Great Britain coach include Rob Burrow, Gareth Ellis, Danny McGuire, Jamie Peacock, Kevin Sinfield and Keith Senior.
Second rower Jones-Buchanan is one of five uncapped players in the squad together with Bradford Bulls pair of Sam Burgess and Michael Platt, Warrington Wolves hooker Jon Clarke and St Helens' Marie Fa'asavalau.
As well as seven Rhinos stars, the squad also contains seven from the Saints team Leeds beat in this year's Grand Final.
Tony Smith said: ""I believe this is a very strong squad, which is a nice blend of youth and experience, who are ready to face what will be three very difficult games against Gary Kemble's New Zealand.
"With the World Cup in Australia less than 12 months away I thought it important to bring in some new faces. By giving them an opportunity to be part of the squad now, and maybe feature in some of the games, I think we'll benefit from it greatly further down the line."
Great Britain coach Smith has called a press conference for Monday afternoon to discuss his squad selections further and to also unveil the man who will captain the Lions against New Zealand.
Tickets for Saturday's first Gillette Fusion Test against New Zealand at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium are still available. For more information please call 0871 226 1313 or visit www.rugbyleaguetickets.co.uk Leeds Online
