".......players are an integral part of the game," Lang says.

"A mark of a very good player is that he will take advantage of a half chance and either do something creative for himself or create an opportunity for a teammate. Coaches nowadays seem to work towards the correct balance of impulse and structured play.

"Not too many will restrict their class players. You cannot put a price on those players who can instinctively react and put on to having players perform at the higher range of their ability each week, is to make sure you surround yourself with top-class professionals.

"When Cronulla had Les Davidson and Danny Lee on board, they set an example for the other players in regard to high levels of performance consistency.

"From a coach's point of view, one of the most important factors in ensuring consistency is that you make whatever the players do enjoyable.

"Training has to be relevant and provide a certain amount of variety.

"Know your players, know when to back off and know when to have some fun. Most importantly, set an example.

"Try to do the small things well, be professional yourself, show enthusiasm and be well organised."

But when things break down or adverse situations arise, the coach may have to address player issues that are hampering the progression towards the team's goals.

Quite often these issues can be related to the mental state of the players, ie. boredom, complacency, negativity or arrogance.

But rather than consider player psychology an over-riding factor in his team's success, Lang prefers to view it as one of three key areas, along with skill and fitness.

Souths chase $6 million sponsor

SOUTH Sydney want to compete with Australian sport's corporate high-flyers by seeking a major sponsorship deal worth a staggering $6 million.

The Rabbitohs yesterday lost Firepower as a major sponsor after one year and the club now chasing a new three-year deal.

Believing rugby league commercially under-sells itself, Souths co-owner Peter Holmes a Court will command $2 million a year to be the Rabbitohs' major sponsor on the club's away jumper.

Whoever outlays that figure will also have shorts sponsorship, game day ground signage, corp- orate hospitality and appear on some merchandise.

"We are looking for the $6 million man," Holmes a Court told The Daily Telegraph last night.

"Rugby league gives incredible value to sponsors.

"I think rugby league has undersold itself and now is the chance for the game to give sponsors the value it creates.

"Look at rugby union. It has no free to air, rugby league does, and rugby league kicks a... on pay television.

"Some people I speak with talk down rugby league and I don't like that. It is an old reputation.

"Rugby league is now in a fully professional era."

Major sponsorships for NRL clubs range from $600,000 to $1.2 million - well under Souths' asking price.

Holmes a Court claims his club should be on a sponsorship parallel with Australian sporting giants Collingwood, Essendon, Brisbane Broncos and the Wallabies.

"I'm not above pounding the pavement and knocking on doors," he said. "I will meet with whoever can help Souths. That is what I am committed to do."

Souths will also consider deals worth $1 million but that would not include signage and corporate hospitality.

A Souths press release said Firepower, a fuel additive company, opted against taking up an option of two more years as major sponsor.

But, strangely, Rabbitohs management claimed they wanted the deal terminated, claiming the company was "difficult to deal with."

Holmes a Court said: ""As they (Firepower) were unable to commit to the long term, we decided on a mutual parting of ways."

He added he had already received up to 12 sponsorship inquiries, two arriving yesterday morning.

Souths may look at a global company, given Hollywood star Russell Crowe is a co-owner.

The South Side Story documentary attracted an overall audience of 18 million on cable television throughout America.

About one million viewers watched the seven-part series which was aired on ABC television in Australia.

NRL chief executive David Gallop last night questioned Holmes a Courts' suggestions that the game was under-selling itself to sponsors.

"Peter wasn't around when things were pretty grim for the game," Gallop said. "But in a short time the sponsorship growth has been enormous as the game has gotten itself back on two feet.

"Peter is right to suggest that we are now a valuable proposition for sponsors."

Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson added: "Rugby league is going into a new era when it comes to sponsorship." Read more Daily Telegraph

Neil Kelly interested in Widnes coaching position

Former Widnes coach Neil Kelly is one of five men to express an interest in succeeding Steve McCormack.

The Vikings have received expressions of interest from home and abroad since McCormack announced he would be leaving to become assistant coach to Justin Morgan at Hull KR.

No appointment can be made until the club comes out of administration but it is thought they could have new owners by the end of the month.

Former Salford coach Karl Harrison has also been linked with the vacancy and would be available to fill the post with immediate effect.

Kelly, who was Super League coach of the year five years ago after helping the Vikings consolidate their place in the top flight, is coming to the end of a three-year contract as Ulster's defence coach and contemplating his future in rugby union.

"I have always regarded myself as a rugby league coach and that is where I see my future," he told the Liverpool Daily Post.

"I have achieved a lot since moving to Ulster, including winning the Magners League, but I feel now is the time where I want to come back home and I'm keen to get back into coaching rugby league somewhere."

Kelly led Dewsbury to National League Grand Final success in 2000 before moving to Widnes, where he masterminded their promotion to Super League in his first full season.

Wigan now owned by London Harlequins chairman Ian Lenagan

The most famous name in rugby league changed hands on Wednesday when Wigan came under the ownership of Harlequins chairman Ian Lenagan.

Wigan-born Lenagan announced at a press conference at the JJB Stadium that he has reached agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Super League club from current owner Dave Whelan.

The agreement takes effect from December 1 when Lenagan will become the new owner with an 89% stake.

"Completion of the deal has taken longer than anticipated and today's announcement is needed to end speculation for supporters and staff alike," he said.

"I am delighted to announce that Brian Noble will remain as head coach."

The new management team will include former Wigan and Great Britain centre Joe Lydon, who becomes chief executive of a new holding company, and effectively takes over the running of rugby league's most famous club from Maurice Lindsay.

Lydon, who became football manager at Wigan after playing his last game in 1997, was the Rugby Football League's technical director up to 2000 when he left to work for the Rugby Football Union and coached England's backs from 2004-06.

"I am delighted to be returning to Wigan and, while respectful of the past, now look forward with enthusiasm to the challenges of helping to shape the future," he said.

The Warriors have acquired an option to remain at the JJB stadium up to 2050 while Lenagan will outline his future at Harlequins at a press conference on Monday. Read more Sporting Life

Morley's 'a maniac'

Warrington's Great Britain enforcer Adrian Morley is an unchecked "maniac", according to New Zealand rugby league chief Andrew Chalmers, after a high tackle on Awen Guttenbeil went unpunished.

The tackle occurred while Morley was playing for the Northern Union in their 25-18 defeat on Saturday to the All Golds team based around a core of Kiwi players who now go on to play a three-Test series against Great Britain and one against France.

"Someone should have to answer for this," said Chalmers.

"Morley should not be able to play in the first Test against the Kiwis on Saturday and there would be an argument that he shouldn't be able to appear in the next two Tests either.

"The referee did the right thing in putting the tackle on report but the system has taken no regard of player welfare in the aftermath.

"Does that now give Morley carte blanche to go around aiming as high as he likes throughout this series? You'd have to think so."

Chalmers said he had aired his views with the English Rugby Football League (RFL) but said he had no confidence it would review its stance on Morley, who also played in the Australian NRL with the Sydney Roosters.

"They have no concept of what is right and proper. After all, they see nothing wrong in allowing a maniac like Morley to operate with a search and destroy mentality."

Morley escaped any potential penalty when a three-man panel convened by the RFL made a split decision not to refer his case to a judicial hearing.

"It's a disgrace," said Chalmers. "There were two tackles in that match which would have incurred suspensions in the NRL, one on Awen Guttenbeil and the other on Nigel Vagana.

"The one on Nigel wasn't even put forward for consideration and Morley's effort was pushed under the carpet despite (NZRL official) Neville Kesha believing it was serious enough to warrant a suspension of between four and six weeks.

"It's clear the RFL has little interest in player health and welfare if it allows such tackles to go unpunished."

Chalmers added he was even angrier that a player with Morley's hardman reputation should escape punishment.

"He was a repeat offender in his time in the NRL and he has a history of offending throughout his career in England," he said of the English prop.

"This decision should be reviewed whatever the regulations are.
