RUGBY LEAGUE COACHING MANUALS Extract from RLCM eBook 10 page 5
Acquiring the Skills of Rugby League
By Don Oxenham - ARL Level 4 Coach
........learners can modify their football skills they should be given some information by the coach as to whether or not performance is reaching the required level.
The major skills of Rugby League are considered to be passing, tackling, handling, play the ball, evasion and kicking.
A player would be considered highly skilled when they could bring about a predetermined football response with maximum certainty and a minimum expenditure of energy.
Elite players display an appearance of efficiency and smoothness of movement and are able to anticipate events and cope with unpredictable circumstance without adversely affecting their level of performance.
Learning is a continual process and therefore cannot be broken down into distinct or separate stages.
However, irrespective of the age of the learner there are gradual changes that occur as the player develops an ability to reproduce a skill successfully.
The product of the learning process is when a player can produce the skill automatically.
For example top players seem to be able to pay more attention to the development of the pattern of play around them than players with less skill.
These players have refined the skills to a stage where they can be executed without conscious awareness of the necessary movements.
That is, the skills are automatic, therefore, when a champion gains possession of the ball he is not concerned with HOW he is going to kick it, but is more concerned with WHERE to kick the ball for the best advantage of the team.
Throughout this learning process the changes that occur include a reduction in errors, improvement in accuracy, greater consistency of performance and a decrease in the feel and level of effort.
The psychology of motor skill learning suggests that the condition under which the skills of Rugby League are presented to the individual player are very critical in the learning process. Although it is often said that "practice makes perfect."
It should be recognised that players may not learn just because they participate.
It is important to practice and ensure that the correct technique is being employed, particularly at the junior level.
The type and method of practice must be favourable in order that the player reaches the highest level of performance.
As coach you can vary the number, duration and intensity of practice periods.
To guide the coach in his decision to select the most appropriate practice schedule he should consider the age and physical maturity and motivational level of the individual players along with the physical demands of the skill in terms of fatigue.
The more tired players become during the practice session, the less likely they are to retain their previous interest and skill level.
In view of these factors, a distributed practice schedule provides a more efficient coaching system.
For example, the use of a 5 or 10 minute tackling segment in a number of practice sessions is more likely to make greater impact on the players in terms of learning and retention than a single half hour tackling segment once a month.
In general, football skills should be taught by the whole (as distinct from the part) method. For example, in learning to kick, the total action should be attempted.....................Click RLCM Bookshop to order your eBook, it will be in your PC by return email.

Nigel Wood takes position of chief executive of RFL
By Ian Laybourn
Former Halifax chief executive Nigel Wood has been promoted to a similar, all-powerful role with the Rugby Football League.
Wood, who joined the league six years ago, steps up from the post of operating officer to that of chief executive, effectively giving him overall control of the English game's governing body from executive chairman Richard Lewis.
The move was made at the recommendation of Lewis, who will be free to devote more time to his wider role of developing the game nationally and internationally in his position as chairman of the European Federation.
Lewis is also vice-chairman of the International Federation and head of the CCPR's major spectator sports division.
"I'm delighted that Nigel has achieved this promotion, because it recognises years of hard work," said Lewis.
"Nigel's appointment not only allows me to continue chairing the various forums within the RFL - such as RFL Council, RFL Board and Super League, National League and Community Boards - but also to be even more focused on developing the RFL's key external relationships."
Wood, a former deputy head of finance for BBC North, has played a key role in rugby league's success in turning around their finances over the last six years - and it was his idea to take an entire round of Super League fixtures to Cardiff for the annual Millennium Magic weekend.
He said: "I'm thrilled to take on this role at such an exciting time for rugby league in this country.
"The governing body is in a far healthier state than it was a few years ago, and my aim is to build on the recent success and continue the organisation's reputation for strong governance and innovation.
"We are now one of the 'big five' sports in the UK and have an excellent sponsorship portfolio, featuring some leading brands. On the horizon, we have some big challenges ahead of us - ones that I am very excited about facing."
WIGAN TAKEOVER PLANS EXPECTED Harlequins chairman Ian Lenagan is set to take over the reins at Wigan Warriors on Wednesday.

Steve McCormack expected to become assistant coach at Hull KR
By Ian Laybourn
Steve McCormack, who is the youngest man to coach in Super League, quit crisis-torn Widnes and is expected to become assistant to Justin Morgan at Hull KR.
The 34-year-old McCormack, who took the Vikings to within 80 minutes of a return to Super League in each of his two seasons with them, tended his resignation as head coach, insisting the move was in the best interests of both parties.
"It has been a challenging and enjoyable two years at Widnes and I am sad to leave," he said.
"However, with all the off-the-field changes currently taking place, I feel that it is in the best interests of all parties to have a fresh start in 2008.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the club and all the fans for their support over the last two seasons and wish them every success for the forthcoming season."
Widnes are looking for new owners after going into administration and have witnessed the break-up of the side that lost to Castleford in the promotion-deciding National League Grand Final earlier this month.
Although he signed a new contract earlier this year, McCormack was free to talk to other clubs and was wanted by National League Two club Barrow Raiders.
But he is thought to have received a counter-offer from Hull KR that would enable him to once more coach in Super League.
He was just 28 when he was appointed at Salford in 2001 but was sacked as the Reds faced the prospect of relegation and was eventually succeeded by Karl Harrison.
Ironically, Harrison is now thought to among the candidates to succeed McCormack at the Halton Stadium.

Petero Civoniceva eyes Panthers captaincy
Petero Civoniceva says he would be honoured to wear the captain's armband in his first season at Penrith.
It is understood Civoniceva has the support of Penrith management and coach Matt Elliott to replace the rugby union-bound Craig Gower as skipper for the 2008 season.
The Panthers were impressed by the leadership traits Civoniceva displayed when he was handed the Broncos captaincy in the absence of the injured Darren Lockyer this year.
They believe Civoniceva could have a similar impact to that of his Test and Origin teammate Steve Price, who was rushed in as NZ Warriors captain during his initial season in Auckland.
Civoniceva, who is in the midst of moving his family from Redcliffe to the foot of the Blue Mountains, said he was yet to seriously discuss the captaincy with Elliott. But he said he would be excited by the opportunity.
"It is something we'll probably address once I get down there and meet with the coaches and senior player group," Civoniceva said yesterday. "They have a number of senior players who have been at the club for a long time and being a new player in an organisation I certainly don't want to come in and step on any toes.
"But if something they require of me is leading the team then I'd leap at the opportunity.
"I really relished my brief role as Broncos captain at the end of the year. I got a real taste for it and if it is something Penrith want me to do then I'd be honoured."
Luke Priddis, Luke Lewis and Tony Puletua are thought to be among the other candidates, but Civoniceva, who has joined Penrith on a three-year deal, has the inside running.
"Petero is certainly in contention," Panthers football manager Mick Leary said.
"He is a player we are looking at to lead us in 2008. Petero is the current Test prop who has a wealth of experience from the Brisbane Broncos. On and off the field Petero would bring to us a great culture."
While initially devastated to be leaving Brisbane, Civoniceva said he was now looking forward to the major challenge of helping Penrith rise from the bottom of the league ladder.
"I am really excited about the opportunity down there," Civoniceva said. "It was a disappointing way to finish at Brisbane, losing to Melbourne, but I have put all that behind me and I am really looking forward to a new challenge.
"Matty Elliott has made a really good impression in all our early dealings and I can't wait to start working with him and the rest of the guys.
"I'll be down in Penrith setting up home over the weekend and then I'll report for the first day of pre-season on Monday. It will be good to catch up with everyone and then I'll be back to start training on December 5."
Civoniceva won't have to wait long to lock horns with his former club, with the NRL draw pitting his new club against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium in the opening round in mid-March.

Nederland Tasman Team (Australia Based)
After a summer of inactivity and regrouping, the Nederlandse Nationale Rugby League Bond are now making plans to re enter the Rugby League world.
Efforts are being made in the Netherlands to build on the success of the 2006 World Cup qualifying games and to once again see some League played in the country.
A plan is being formulated with the 2013 world cup as a target.
To compliment the work going on in Holland an Exiles team is sought in the southern hemisphere.
The 2006 national team was captained by Robertson Spuddies Aaron de Jager,(now at Kiama Knights) and included Dutch/Australians in ex Bulldog and Halifax center Dane Neirinckx,James Howitt (Coventry Bears) Nathan Mierske (London Skolars) Chris Hodgetts (Hemel Stags) and Dutch/Kiwi Alex Smits (London Skolars).
After a quick scan through the team lists of the CRL divisions there seems to be a lot of names that could possibly qualify to represent the Netherlands via the quaifying criteria.
Born in the Netherlands, Dutch Passport holder, one or more Dutch parent's or one or more Dutch grandparent's.
Other competitions are also bound to have suitable players.
In 2008 the Nederland Tasman team will be looking for players based in Australia to wear the "Orange" as a means of developing the game and raising the media profile of Dutch rugby league.
Throughout the next three to four years the Tasman side will be looking to play games against other Australian based emerging nations as well as combining with the home based national team to develop a squad that will hopefully be competitive in the 2013 World Cup qualifying games.
The Dutch National 13 will be also looking to re enter the European Nations Championship in 2009/2010.
If you are aged over 16, believe you qualify to represent the Netherlands and have the desire and passion to play rugby league for your mother country the NNRLB would like to hear from you as we build for the future.
In the first instance email dutchrugbyleague@... or contact Kiama Knights player Aaron de Jager at aaronazz@... with your qualification criteria and playing CV.
We would also like to hear from anyone who is interested in working with the Nederland Tasman team in none playing roles. This includes admins, potential sponsors, physio's, coaches etc etc.
Please forward relevant information and experience to the above email addresses.[Non RLCM Subscriber 241007]
