Newcastle denies explosive salary cap allegations
By Dean Ritchie
THE Newcastle Knights and the NRL were last night forced to defend explosive allegations of salary cap rorting after a detailed email was sent to every club chief executive.
Former Knights financial controller Brad Newton attached an 18-page document listing stunning claims of salary cheating at the club dating back to 2000.
The Daily Telegraph also obtained a series of emotional emails exchanged between Newton and Knights chairman Peter Corcoran.
But NRL chief David Gallop and the Knights management last night vehemently denied Newton's allegations, which involved players being implicated in salary cap rorting.
Gallop was forced to respond to all 16 clubs with a strongly worded letter of denial.
Corcoran said: "I'm not sure what Brad is on about to be truthful - all the particular incidents have been investigated and solved. It's all been put to bed."
Newton, who left the Knights in 2003, claims he was not comfortable with the club's treatment of the salary cap and that fallout from accusations he made "destroyed his life" and resulted in a mental breakdown.
In the emails, Newton demands a meeting with Corcoran over his claims. The meeting has never taken place.
Newton wrote to Corcoran: "The day I resigned I was a decent, honest hard-working loyal financial controller who witnessed enough poor management, deceptive management, dishonest and corrupt management, tax fraud, embezzlement - you name it - to last me an entire career."
Newton said last night he was driven out of Newcastle by the allegations and wants the club to admit its mistakes to clear his name.
Knights officials said Newton is simply an eccentric and disgruntled former employee.
Asked last night why he was desperate to pursue the allegations, Newton said: "It has sent me around the twist. I want the people who did it, and who denied it, to accept that these things happened and stop burying their heads in the sand. They have to stop hiding behind ignorance."
In Newton's damning document, he claimed "salary cap rorting (in 2002 and 2003) at Newcastle appeared commonplace".
He claimed in 2003 there was "deliberate and calculated salary cap rorting that was prevalent at the club since at least 2000".
"The NRL covered up their tracks by claiming the rorts did not happen," Newton wrote.
Newton also alleged the Knights:
PAID off Player A's mortgage in 2003, which was outside the salary cap;
PROVIDED Player B with a company car for two years which "deliberately" avoided the salary cap;
SUPPLIED Player C with Holden cars between 1999 and 2003 which were not declared in the cap;
WERE aware former football manager Steve Crowe forged Andrew Johns' signature for memorabilia. Crowe strenuously denies this;
BOARD elections in 2002 and before were invalid;
MADE $200,000 in payments to players in late 2001 disguised as grand final bonuses. All 2002 contracts were reduced by about $13,000 a player to get their 2002 player salaries lower; and
ISSUED a former CEO with a $200,000 tax-free payout when he left the Knights "with many dark secrets".
In an email to Corcoran, Newton wrote he had "lost faith in Newcastle's integrity and effectiveness".
Last night Newton said: "I resigned on principle because I wouldn't compromise my integrity.
"The Knights said there was nothing wrong and dismissed the whole thing. I was the only one being honest - the rest lied and came up smelling like roses.
"The Knights were still doing it after the Bulldogs (were caught rorting in 2002) - they were playing Russian roulette. The NRL gave the Knights preferred treatment."
Knights chief executive Steve Burraston angrily denied Newton's claims.
Burraston said the allegations had previously been investigated and dismissed by the NRL.
"The allegations are totally false," Burraston said. "They were investigated at the time and there was no substance found to them.
"He (Newton) left our organisation and, as I understand, wasn't given a reference. He is very disgruntled."
NRL management was so angry, officials sent an email last night to all clubs saying: "Any suggestion the NRL has failed to act on those investigations, or that it has failed to act consistently or appropriately, is completely false.
"The NRL salary cap auditor (Ian Schubert) had received a number of pieces of correspondence from the employee (Newton) in 2003 and had treated each seriously.
"The issue of grand final bonuses in 2001 was investigated and addressed by the NRL - there was no breach of the rules."

Danny McGuire happy to cut short his GF celebrations
Leeds stand-off Danny McGuire was happy to cut short his Grand Final victory celebrations in order to further his representative career.
The 24-year-old has been drafted into the Northern Union side chosen by Great Britain coach Tony Smith for Saturday's centenary international against the New Zealand All Golds at Warrington.
McGuire will be the Northern Union's only Grand Finalist after agreeing to plug the gap caused by the loss of half-backs Paul Deacon (Bradford), Richard Horne (Hull) and Kevin Brown (Huddersfield).
He was told of his selection midway through the Rhinos' homecoming on Sunday and immediately called a halt to his celebrations.
"Danny was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when he came in for training," said Smith, whose stint as Leeds coach came to an end following Saturday's 33-6 win over St Helens.
"He's a good professional and wants to do the best for his country.
"He has hit some good form and he wants to get out there and have another crack at it for the Test series, because there is a bit of competition in that area at the moment."
McGuire won his 10th cap in Britain's 42-14 win over France at Headingley in June and is competing with St Helens' Leon Pryce for the number six jersey for the first Test against the Kiwis at Huddersfield on Saturday week.
He believes that Pryce, who was among a host of players rested for the mid-season clash with the French, is in pole position but is hoping a strong performance on Saturday will sway his coach.
He said: "If I play well, who knows? It's important for Great Britain as a whole for players on the fringe to perform well and put pressure on the players that are going to be in the 17.
"It's being talked about as a trial game - but there is a lot of talent here who would do really well in the starting 17 for Britain.
"I think towards the back end of the season I played some of the best rugby I've played for a long while and started to really enjoy my game.
"I felt it was starting to come together, so I hope I can carry that on for the next month.
"It's an honour to be involved in this game. There are not many players that are going to be able to say they were part of this special occasion. I hope it will provide another good memory from a good year."
Smith has named seven uncapped players in his Northern Union team. But there is no place for Warrington's teenage winger Kevin Penny, while Wigan captain Sean O'Loughlin was not considered because of injury.
North Queensland hooker David Faiumu is the only player involved in the Kiwis' record 58-0 defeat by Australia in Wellington named in the All Golds team, which is being coached by veteran Australian Wayne Bennett.

Community campaign to get parents to 'Play by the Rules'
Television advertisements showing the affects that inappropriate sporting behaviour has on children will begin airing on televisions across Queensland.
Sport Minister Judy Spence today launched two Community Service Announcements, which promote the website 'Play by the Rules', supported by the Department of Sport and Recreation, Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission, the Commissioner for Children and Young People and the Australian Sports Commission.
"Research has shown that many children feel pressured in sport and that inappropriate parental behaviour and verbal abuse is common," Ms Spence said.
"This campaign is a crucial tool to raise awareness in the community about unlawful and inappropriate behaviour and to promote the 'Play by the Rules' website, which provides vital on-line information for sporting clubs.
"Unfortunately we continue to witness inappropriate incidents at junior sporting matches, including violence, racism, verbal abuse and win-at-all-cost mentalities from coaches and parents, which can be very distressing for participants," Ms Spence said. "We have to make the community aware that this has to stop."
"That's why this campaign is so thought provoking because it asks the question, 'What would it be like if children pressured us the way we pressured them?"
"Our main message to parents is relax, sport is meant to be fun," Ms Spence said.
CEO of the Australian Sports Commission, Mark Peters, said the Community Service Announcements deliver excellent messages about parental behaviour at kids' junior sport matches.
"These advertisements cleverly reverse the child and parent roles and are designed to raise awareness and promote discussion about supportive and constructive behaviour in sport," Mr Peters said.
Acting Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Neroli Holmes, said in the last 12 months the 'Play by the Rules' website has received 3.5 million hits, which demonstrates its value in the community.
"This website plays an important role in providing information and advice for sporting clubs about a range of serious issues including child protection, inappropriate touching of athletes, abuse of referees, abusive coaches and parents, racism and dealing with complaints," Ms Holmes said.
"I believe the message is starting to get out there and more than five thousand sporting clubs have registered to complete on-line-learning programs."
'Play by the Rules' is supported by the Queensland government's 'True Sport Lives Here' program, which helps local sporting clubs promote sportsmanship and good behaviour.
Rugby league legend, Steve Renouf, who is an ambassador for the True Sport program, said players and parents needed to clean up their acts.
"I believe it is important to be a good role model and lead by example. I have five children and would never pressure them to succeed or to follow in my footsteps," Steve said.
"I want them to play sport because of their love for the game, which is why I was successful."

NZ are going for gold
By Peter Jessup
Fullback Sam Perrett is the most likely to receive a call-up from the Kiwis provided he plays well for the All Golds against the Northern Union side at Warrington on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Auckland-born wing was moved to fullback at the Roosters to cover for Anthony Minichiello when he suffered a season-ending leg injury and played out the year there with credit.
Given his ability to cover both positions as well as the Kiwis' need for speed, he is ahead of the other All Golds' candidates for the last spot in the Kiwis' 24-man tour party for the test series against Great Britain and the one-off game against France.
Thomas Leuluai, who can kick goals and provides halfback/hooker cover, and Broncos utility Greg Eastwood, are likely to be Perrett's main opponents.
There is also interest in the performance of teenager Chase Stanley at five-eighth for the All Golds. Could he be a test candidate there?
The Northern Union side is being prepared by Great Britain's new coach Tony Smith and he indicated his intention to use the game as a trial for the confrontation with the Kiwis on October 27 by dubbing it "the fourth test".
So, while there will be something of a festival atmosphere and there is the intention to entertain, there will be a serious edge to the contest.
Seven players in the side named by Smith yesterday are yet to make their international debut.
The rest have played at least one international and all are considered test candidates. Seven played in Great Britain's last game, a 42-14 win over France in July.
The injury-enforced withdrawals from the test squad of Bradford's Paul Deacon, Richard Horne from Hull and Kevin Brown (Huddersfield Giants) has left Smith short of choices at halfback.
Wakefield's Jamie Rooney gets a chance at No 7 and Leeds' grand final-winning five-eighth Danny McGuire is in the six jersey for the All Golds' game, though it's expected Lions captain Jamie Peacock will be five-eighth for the test and Leeds' Rob Burrow the halfback.
McGuire is the only Northern Union player from last weekend's Super League grand final.
A sell-out crowd of around 15,000 is expected, with a range of attractions.
There is the final retirement of Kiwis great Stacey Jones who plays his last game at this level, the teaming of veteran Warriors props Ruben Wiki, who holds the all-time test appearance record, and Australian Steve Price as the Dally M representative, as well as the leadership of world's best coach Wayne Bennett.
Use of the 1907 points scoring system is intended as a nod to history and the teams will wear old-style jerseys. The game will be preceded by a march-past of the Northern Union clubs from 1907 and also the 30 nations who play rugby league.
Also celebrating their centenary this year are the Boy Scouts and members of the Warrington East scout group will walk out with both the Northern Union and All Golds' sides.
The All Golds of 1907/08 played 35 games in a five-month tour of England, winning 19, losing 14, with two draws. The first "test" against the Northern Union was lost 14-6, the next two won 18-6 and 8-5.
The 2007 All Golds and the Kiwis have had separate routines this week with the commemorative team meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace while the Kiwis trained in Leeds.
The stench of a police investigation into sexual assault claims following their thrashing by Australia in Wellington clings to the national side. The NZRL is refusing to comment, saying the matter is awaiting police action.
But it seems certain there has been a full review and further management routines and security been put in place.
It is clear where the Kiwis lost the game in Wellington, with the stats showing a huge difference in forward ground-gain. The Kangaroos were led by Willie Mason who made 212m coming off the bench while Steve Price made 182m, Petero Civoniceva 177m and Ryan Hoffman 132m. By comparison only Roy Asotasi, with 147m, and bench man Jeff Lima, with 174m, of the Kiwis crossed the 100m mark. Next best was Simon Mannering with 66m, though he did make 44 tackles as well.
Where were the rest?
On the back of that gain, Kangaroos five-eighth Greg Bird cut the Kiwis up, running 233m. By comparison, Kiwis five-eighth Ben Roberts ran 17m. Too many of the Kangaroos' 11 tries were soft runs through poor defence.
Even allowing the overlap of having 13 men playing 12 after Steve Matai was dismissed, there were still 50 missed tackles. Conceding 11 tries is an embarrassment.
The Great Britain side will be experienced, toughened and determined as players queue for World Cup spots under the new coach.
Given their shockingly poor start to the campaign as well as the disruption of the police investigation, the Kiwis' coaches and management have a big job in front of them to keep the tour on track. There is every prospect of a major train wreck if they don't. NZ Herald

RUGBY LEAGUE COACHING MANUALS Extract from the STRENGTH AND POWER TRAINING WITHOUT WEIGHTS eBook written by Richard Beesley and Tim Rogers
WHY USE MANUAL RESISTANCE [MR] page 12
......Manual Resistance [MR] training can be an effective addition to any conditioning program. There are a number of reasons why MR can be a valuable training tool;
1. No equipment required. Except for some simple items such as towels, no equipment is required.
2. Can be used to substitute exercises MR exercises can be used as a substitute for other weight training exercises, particularly those that require an expensive pin loaded or plate loaded machine
3. Variety of different movements This form of training can be applied to nearly all traditional strength training movements. In some cases, the resistance is applied much easier, allowing neglected muscle groups to be trained easily.
4. Large groups can be trained at the one time. One major advantage that MR holds is the ability to train all the members of a group at once. This ensures that everyone is performing the required work and supervision is much easier.
5. Maximum resistance can be applied on each repetition. MR allows maximum resistance to be applied on every repetition. If the resistance is too light, the spotter increases the resistance. Conversely, if the resistance is too great, the spotter can reduce the resistance.
6. Exercise intensity can be tailored to meet individual needs. The resistance that is applied in each exercise is tailored to meet the strength of the lifter. The resistance can be varied through the range of motion, matching the strength curve, ensuring the most resistance is applied at the point where the lifter is strongest.
7. Overload can be achieved easily. As the lifter becomes stronger, the spotter simply increases the level of resistance that they must overcome, ensuring an uncomplicated increase in training intensity.
8. Proper technique can be maintained easier. As lifters start to fatigue, they start to display incorrect exercise technique. With MR, the resistance is decreased as the lifter begins to fatigue, allowing them to maintain correct technique.
9. Cooperation and interaction between athletes and/or coach. MR demands cooperation between the athletes and/or athlete and coach to be effective. MR will help the participants learn to rely on and help one another, as they strive to improve their strength and ultimately there performance.
10. Higher levels of concentration are developed. Both lifter and spotter must remain alert to the needs of their training partner. MR will not only help develop a sharper focus on one's own training, it will help each participant to be more aware of his or her partners needs.
11. Constant communication between participants. The spotter and lifter are required to communicate constantly while performing MR exercises, to ensure the correct performance.
12. Cheap. No financial outlay is required to implement an effective MR program.
13. Possible to combine skills and strength training. MR allows the coach to combine skill and strength training into the one session, making training more time efficient........click STRENGTH & POWER TRAINING WITHOUT WEIGHTS to order your eBook, it will be in your PC by return email.
