Kiwis shattered after thrashing
By Chris Ormond
A record 58-0 thrashing at the hands of the Kangaroos yesterday left the Kiwis with a lot of soul searching to do as they prepare for a four match rugby league tour of Britain and France.
The Kiwis, who spent the majority of the match with only 12 players after centre Steve Matai was red carded for a careless tackle, were powerless to stop the Australians, who ran in 11 tries in front of 16,600 stunned league fans at Wellington's Westpac Stadium.
Injuries added to the pain for new Kiwis coach Gary Kemble but he admitted there were not many positives to be salvaged from the match.
"First of all we made too many errors in the first half, we were a little bit flat. But no excuses, even with 12 men I thought we could have played a little bit better ... "
Matai got his marching orders after crashing into star Australian centre Mark Gasnier with a flying arm.
Gasnier was carted from the field as concerned teammates looked on and Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart said the tackle had knocked him senseless.
"He's not good mate", Stuart said after the test. "At half time he couldn't open his eyes - he actually thought he was in Melbourne."
Kemble had little to say about the tackle, which immediately earned Matai a two match ban - likely to apply to pre-season NRL games next year - but questioned referee Steve Ganson's decision to give him a red card.
"Usually they go on report and that's the end of it ... that's an experience I will learn from," he said.
Stuart was not so forgiving. "It was late and it was a cheap shot, and it's in his game," he said. "Late and cheap like that, it's not good for the game."
The Kiwis also missed wing Luke Covell, who went off with a dislocated elbow within the first few minutes of the game, and fullback Krisnan Inu, who played part of the game with a shoulder injury until it forced him off in the second half.
There were hopes from Kiwis supporters that new players in the team would step up and be a handful for the Australians but that was largely not the case.
Kemble said there would be a lot of assessing going on in the next few days before the team departs this month to play three tests against Britain and one against France.
"They've got a lot of work to do and we'll be addressing their deficiencies over the next week and a half," Kemble said.
"The players are disappointed, they're playing for their country ... They're a close-knit bunch so they will really take it to heart."

Stuart blasts 'cheap shot' MARK Gasnier was so heavily concussed by the "cheap shot" that led to Steve Matai being sent off in yesterday's Test and suspended for two matches that he could not recall the Kiwis centre coming into the Australian dressing room and apologising to him.
Kiwis done and dusted IT ONLY took the opening set of tackles for Ricky Stuart to realise his new-look Kangaroos team was on song to produce a top-shelf performance yesterday - and it wouldn't have taken his New Zealand counterpart Gary Kemble much longer to realise he was already under pressure to hold the job.

FIRST DEVELOPMENT OFFICER IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC APPOINTED
In a unique link-up, the Rugby League European Federation has joined in partnership with 'Czech Sports Tours' and the 'Orco Property Group' to employ the first Rugby League Development Officer in the Czech Republic.
Taking the post is Andy Fairhurst, who moved to Prague in 2006 after gaining experience of the sport at every level.
A fully qualified strength and conditioning coach who ran his own business in those disciplines in Leeds; he played for North West Counties side Bamber Bridge, captained Leeds University - where he achieved an honours degree in Sports Science and Physiology - and starred with Rugby League Conference outfit Blackpool Sea Eagles.
His initial coaching experience was with the University side and he also worked in the Leeds Rhinos scholarship programme as fitness coach for two years.
He already has an impressive record in furthering the sport in the Czech Republic, having started a schools development programme in November 2006 which saw the first junior game take place in May 2007 and Kuba Hrbac graduate from it to become a full international.
Czech RL President Milan Mrtynek is delighted to have got his man. "The CZARL looked at a number of candidates to take on a greater development role and decided that Andrew had the greatest experience and qualities required for the position" he said.
"He will be working with our other Czech coaches to improve their skills and establishing clear structures for players, coaches and match officials."
"This appointment is a reflection of the hard work everyone involved with Czech Rugby League has put in over the last two years; we are growing every day as a sport."
Rugby League European Federation Development Executive Kevin Rudd endorsed the association.
"We are extremely pleased to have Andy on board the RLEF's growing team and he will provide support and stability for the sport in a new territory" he added.
"We are currently on the look out for similar potential partnerships in other countries as the Federation further develops its infrastructure."
Among Andy Fairhurst's objectives are to fully establish a domestic senior and junior competition and further increase participation in local schools, where already over 100 children a week are sampling the sport.
He will be working with a newly established 'Schools Development team' which includes current Czech Republic skipper Michal Priputen, Petr Dobremysl and Kuba Hrbac and he is relishing the challenge ahead.
"Our efforts to promote the game in this country have received an overwhelming response" he commented.
"With this new role we can increase the number of schools playing, continue to build up the senior clubs and work more closely with all levels of the game."
"It's an enormous challenge to develop a sport from nothing and through our ongoing work and the continued support of the RLEF we will be stepping up a gear in the next twelve months."
Also on the agenda, a number of British touring sides are planning trips in 2008 to play against a combined Czech schools team.
Any teams interested in playing in the country next year or who may have players eligible to represent the Czech Republic should contact: andrew.fairhurst@...
Australia thrash New Zealand
Australia beat New Zealand 58 - 0 at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, in a league Test today.
AUSTRALIA 58 (Greg Inglis 3 Israel Folau 2 Steve Price, Jarryd Hayne, Brett Stewart, Greg Bird, Willie Mason, Cameron Smith tries Cameron Smith 6 Kurt Gidley goals) bt NEW ZEALAND 0
From Steve Jancetic in Wellington, New Zealand October 14, 2007 AUSTRALIA have run in 11 unanswered tries to secure a record-breaking 58-0 win over a 12-man New Zealand in today's one-off rugby league Test in Wellington.
The Kangaroos were sublime in everything they did in a display which at times resembled a training run.
Greg Inglis secured a hat-trick and teenage winger Israel Folau a double on debut.
The margin was Australia's biggest ever win over the Kiwis, eclipsing their 52-0 mauling in Sydney in 2000.
New Zealand's cause wasn't helped by the 24th minute sending off of centre Steve Matai for a vicious late and high hit on Australian centre Mark Gasnier.
Gasnier was taken from the field on the back of a medicab and did not return after suffering suspected concussion.
To say the one-man advantage cost the Kiwis wouldn't give enough credit to the visitors, who had already opened up a 12-0 lead after Folau had marked his introduction to the international arena by running through six defenders with a powerful opening try.
The Kiwis simply had no discipline, dreadful handling and even worse defence making it a walk in the park for the Australians.
New Zealand had an early setback when Luke Covell was taken form the field just five minutes into his debut, while fullback Krisnan Inu played much of the second half nursing a shoulder injury which made him a virtual passenger.
Inglis scored his first in the 28th minute as the Australians made good use of their numerical advantage and when Jarryd Hayne reached out to score it was 26-0 at the break.
After five tries in the first half, the Australian went one better with six after the break, Brett Stewart and Greg Bird celebrating their Test debuts with tries before Cameron Smith ended the romp by diving over from dummy half just a minute from fulltime to finish with a personal haul of 16 points. Leeds look to Melbourne after triumph
St Helens star Matt Gidley predicted Leeds had the team to topple Melbourne after the Rhinos stunned the world champion Saints in the Super League grand final on Saturday.
In the first major final involving the two glamour clubs in more than three decades, Leeds turned an 8-6 halftime lead into a 33-6 victory before 71,352 fans at Old Trafford.
After receiving pre-match best wishes from Russell Crowe, co-owner of sister club South Sydney, the Rhinos will now meet NRL champions Melbourne for the world title at Elland Road or Headingley on the third Friday in February.
"Playing like they did tonight, they probably can (win) ... Melbourne are a really good side and they do things well," former Newcastle and Australian star Gidley said.
"But Leeds have had a really good year ... you can get the jump on the Aussie teams and Leeds will be hoping for that. They'll be determined to start the season well."
Winners of the 2007 World Club Challenge and Challenge Cup, St Helens narrowed the margin to two when Man of Steel James Roby finished off a sizzling Sean Long-inspired movement to score 13 minute short of halftime.
But the second half was all Leeds, former Warriors star Ali Lauitiiti forcing his way over in the 49th minute and ex-Manly winger Scott Donald racing 60 metres to score almost from the restart.
Man of the match Rob Burrow landed a 53rd minute field goal for 19-6 and from there Leeds were not headed, their Australian coach Tony Smith given a perfect send-off before he takes up the Great Britain job fulltime.
New coach Brian McClennan will face the WCC clash with the Storm within a month of taking up his first fulltime professional club coaching appointment.
A match-eve meeting at their Manchester hotel laid the foundations for their triumph, Smith said.
"We've talked about what it means to us, what it meant to win," he said.
"The players had many, many reasons to do it. They weren't going to let each other down."
Leeds second rower Gareth Ellis said Smith told him he owed him a premiership and denied reports he was joining Manly.
"When we first talked to Gareth, he wanted to come to the club because of the chance of winning trophies," said Smith, who added Ellis would walk into any team in the NRL.
"We hadn't won a trophy since Gareth came here.
"I would have felt there was something not fulfilled there. I would have taken responsibility for that." League HQ
Junior Kiwis hold off Junior Kangaroos
Rookie South Sydney halfback Eddie Paea steered the Junior Kiwis to a thrilling 24-22 win over the Junior Kangaroos in the curtain-raiser to Sunday's trans-Tasman Test in Wellington.
Paea slotted a simple penalty goal eight minutes from time to secure the win before the home side was forced to come up with some desperate goalline defence to deny the Australians in the closing stages.
The Kangaroos looked like running away with the contest with two tries in the opening eight minutes.
Young Melbourne centre Will Chambers got the first before Wests Tigers star Chris Lawrence crashed through two defenders for a 12-0 lead.
The Kiwis hit back with two tries in four minutes in either corner, Liam Foran and Paea both landing sideline conversions to lock up the contest.
The Australians struggled to handle their much bigger opposition, their dominance rewarded when young Gold Coast winger Kingi Akaloa scored his second of the afternoon to give New Zealand their first lead of the game.
Paea scored a brilliant individual try as he stepped through three defenders to have his side in a commanding position at the break before Bulldogs flyer Heka Nanai dragged the visitors back into the contest when he scored out wide just two minutes after the restart.
Lawrence was denied a second when held up over the line, but there was no stopping interchange backrower Tony Williams who beat three players to score in almost the same spot his skipper had been stopped only five minutes earlier.
Young Warriors backrower Sonny Fai was proving a handful out wide with several handy offloads for the Kiwis, one of which should have resulted in a try only for Alex Glenn to go himself instead of using one of three players he had in support.
It seemed only a matter of time before the Kiwis would go over, but they eventually sealed the win with a penalty goal when Kangaroos prop Aiden Tolman was ruled to have stripped the ball in front of his own posts.
In the opening match of the day, the Australian Indigenous under-18 side wrapped up its tour of the Pacific with a 48-16 win over the New Zealand Maori under-18 side.
The match was marred by an ugly all-in brawl in the final minute which saw two players sent to the sin bin. League HQ
Leeds 33 defeated St Helens 6 Super Grand Final at Old Trafford
Leeds are the kings of Super League after crushing St Helens 33-6 in a one-sided Grand Final at Old Trafford on Saturday night.
Tony Smith got the perfect send-off as Rhinos coach in front of a passionate packed house.
Ali Lauitiiti, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Scott Donald, Brent Webb and Lee Smith all scored tries for the Rhinos as they romped to victory.
And six goals and a drop from Kevin Sinfield completed their big points haul.
James Roby scored a first-half try for Saints, who trailed only 8-6 at half-time.
But after the break it was all Leeds as they scored 25 unanswered points to take the biggest prize in rugby league.
"I am just really pleased for all my players, and so proud of them," Rhinos coach Smith said afterwards.
"They have worked so hard; they deserved it - and I knew they were going to do it tonight.
"They are a great bunch, and it is a fantastic club."
Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield hailed his side for defying the critics as they became Super League champions for the second time.
"We've been written off a bit as well this year and to come out against such a great team, the champion team and come out with a performance like that is credit to the guys," Sinfield said.
"The competition's been really tough as well, but Saints have been stand-out the last couple of years.
"The guys had the belief. We knew we had it in us and the guys stood up today.
"The guts and determination and spirit and will to win was there from us."
Leeds' win also prevented all-conquering Saints achieving an historic back-to-back treble and Rhinos star and Great Britain skipper Jamie Peacock was delighted to put one over on them.
"It's a great feeling," said Peacock, part of the Bradford side beaten by Saints in 2002.
"I've been wanting to beat Saints since the final in 2002. It means a lot to me.
"The momentum was with us today. We were on a roll the last six or seven weeks of the season."
Peacock revealed the Rhinos scented blood at half-time
"They looked tired coming off the pitch," he added.
"We thought we could take them and that's what we did." Sporting Life

RUGBY LEAGUE COACHING MANUALS Extract from the RLCM eBook 'An Approach To Coaching Rugby League' written by Ray Unsworth RFL
Developing a Quality Environment page 43
........... head coach at a Super League club and it's day one.
What are you going to do to create an environment that is conducive to producing winning performances?.
Coaching is about delivering a service to your athletes, your players and the team.
However, in order to deliver a quality service and create a performance environment you have first got to know and fully understand what your starting point is.
Coaching at this level is a 'we' thing. You cannot create or deliver the right environment in which to consistently produce winning football on your own.
At the outset, you need to also carefully consider the people you put in place, the make up of your coaching staff. What is it that makes them tick?
Having put them in place, are they really capable of doing a job for you because performance teams cannot afford to carry any passengers?
You need to know what their strengths are and where they pull up short.
Whatever role you've given them, every member of your staff must be clearly accountable for their piece of the action. If you are to be successful, they must add value and if they don't, then they shouldn't be there.
In order to create a performance environment that is positive and distraction free you need also to consider every situation as it arises and provide solutions that best manage both your staff and your players.
What you are actually trying to create is 'One Team, One Spirit, One Vision'.
Should you do that, then it is at this point that you can start to consider what is it that makes a winning culture.
Experience shows that it starts with you and your staff and the environment we have just spoken about.
It is about your philosophy as to how the game should be played and your shared vision.
Remember one team, one spirit, and one vision.
These are the non-negotiable principles about how you operate.
Having shared goals and ambition, desire and determination and positive actions are the attributes and qualities that contribute to winning.
On the other hand, what is it that destroys winning?
Compromising your values leads to inconsistent practice and your players will pick up on that immediately.
Implementing quick-fix solutions does not solve problems and consist of negative rather than positive actions.
Now those two words, positive and negative, need to be considered further..................Click here and purchase all 36 RLCM eBooks over 4000 pages] on one CD-ROM.
