Kiwis and Kangaroos both fielding new halfbacks
By Peter Jessup
It's an oddity that both the Kiwis and the Kangaroos will field new halfbacks in the test in Wellington this weekend.
Andrew Johns and Stacey Jones are gone, bring on Cooper Cronk and Jeremy Smith.
Smith has beaten Thomas Leuluai to the seven jersey despite Leuluai having played there before. Coach Gary Kemble has made it clear the job is Smith's longer-term if he puts his hand up to take it.
At 26, with plenty of lower-grade international experience behind him, Smith said he was comfortable with steering the game.
"Hopefully I'll go out and prove to the boys that I'm the man for the job. I don't feel too much pressure having to fill Stacey's boots. If you think about it too much you might feel the pressure because they're big boots to fill. I've always wanted that jersey. I'm a pretty passionate bloke so to get it is a really big buzz. I hope to do it justice."
Smith was a halfback when a junior at the Waiheke Island club then moved to Kaeo in the north and to fullback, returning to halfback in his late teens. He played for the Junior Kiwis and NZ Maori before shifting to Australia.
He freely admits he didn't take that first opportunity. "I wasn't thinking of footy as a career. My discipline wasn't good ... Now I realise if you really want to get there you've got to put 110 per cent in."
After a run of injuries and NRL clubs where he played in lower grades, Smith was thrown a lifeline by Parramatta in 2006 and, just weeks after his debut, was named for the mid-year test against Great Britain. But just before it, he was suspended for four weeks for pushing ref Sean Hampstead during Parramatta's loss to St George. He's learned the lesson.
Eels coach Jason Taylor approached Smith about a shift to Souths while he was negotiating to go there himself and the Kiwi did so.
He's since established himself as a regular and enjoyed the milestones Souths achieved this season, making the finals.
"We were disappointed the way it panned out [eliminated first weekend of playoffs] because we thought we had a pretty good team. We're looking to push on next season," he said.
Owner Russell Crowe was very hands-on, Smith said, he and Souths and Kiwis captain Roy Asotasi agreeing his backing was a positive.
Smith attributed his own good form and selection to Taylor's coaching. "He's a great communicator."
His opposite in the Kangaroos, Cooper Cronk, is known as a motor-mouth. He started in rugby as halfback/first five-eighths for the First XV at St Laurence's High School in Brisbane, where the yearbook in 2003 talks about his on-field chatter.
"Coop's nonstop talk was crucial to keep the team's game on track. He proved to be the team linchpin, able to turn the game around." Read more NZ Herald

Allan Langer's advice to rookie Cooper Cronk
By Matt Marshall
CHAMPION halfback Allan Langer has warned Kangaroos debutant Cooper Cronk to sink his teeth into Sunday's trans-Tasman Test or risk becoming a passenger.
Langer, Queensland's second most-capped Test halfback behind Barry Muir, recalls a horror Test outing at London's famous Wembley Stadium in 1990 - in just his fourth international - as a timely warning to the untried Cronk.
The 23-year-old Storm premiership winner, set to become just the 16th Test halfback from Queensland, will play his first senior rep match in Sunday's Test in Wellington.
Cronk will link in the halves with equally raw pivot Greg Bird in Australia's most inexperienced backline ever.
"I don't want to be overawed by the occasion. I don't want to be running around like a headless chook," Cronk said.
Langer said he learnt the hard way at Wembley - when Great Britain stunned Australia 19-12 in the opening Test of the 1990 Kangaroos Tour - just how intoxicating the preamble of Test football can be.
"It's hard to block it all out," Langer said. "I remember at Wembley, it was one of the first Tests I played, and meeting all the dignitaries and the anthems - I got caught up in all of that and the game got away on me.
"I could never get into it. I was caught in the emotion of playing at Wembley. It's definitely a different experience, playing for Australia. He just needs to play his own game."
Langer believes the key to success is for the Brisbane junior to quickly overcome emotions and get down to business.
"Emotions play a big role in Test footy. He can't afford to let the game get away from him," Langer said. "He'll (Cronk) get out there and there will be the haka and the anthems so he'll have to get involved early."
Cronk yesterday declared he expected to be overcome with emotion at Westpac Stadium.
"I got emotional in the grand final when the anthem played so this will be 10-fold, representing my country," Cronk said. "You sit at home watching the haka and think: what are the Australians thinking? I want to soak it up. It's bloody exciting.
"I've got zero expectations . . . but I just want to soak it all up." Read more Courier Mail

Hard Fought Sister City Battle in the Outback League
Thursday saw the conclusion of the Bankstown v Outback Rugby League competition for the 2007 Sister City Sporting Exchange.
The competition had been played at a sizzling pace over the previous two days with St. Christopher's Rugby League Club being ahead two games to nil in the U/13's and the series being locked one game all in the U/15's.
Unfortunately last night mother nature struck with a high number of the city boys being downed with illness.
Games played yesterday saw mixed Bankstown and Outback teams doing battle in both grades.
In the U/13's the blue team were victorious 36-22 with Colin Clark of Menindee scoring a massive 4 tries. Strong performers from this game were Mark Kennedy and Tamati Haimone from Bankstown and Rodrick Jones and Mitchell Fennell from Menindee.
The U/15's saw the combining of the teams breed some mate against mate aggression between both sides.
Massive hits in defence and sensational attack made for some very entertaining rugby league action. In this clash the maroon team finished on top claiming their victory 22-12. Morris Highman and Mark Harb, both from Bankstown, played against each other, both donning the number 10 jersey's and playing a ruthless game. Other stand out performers were Daniel Stone from Bankstown and Matthew Faeamani from the Outback side.
With the results from the first two days St. Christopher's Junior Rugby League Club claimed the Sister City Rugby League Competition and the CRL Shield. No doubt this time next year the Outback boys will be looking to settle the score in the big smoke.
The County Rugby League wishes to thank Bankstown for their excellent sportsmanship, impeccable behaviour from everybody and their positive attitude which has made this competition the best it could possibly have been. Outback League Online

Cronulla Caringbah Sharks JRLFC2007
It's official! Cronulla Caringbah Sharks Junior Rugby League Football Club has been accepted into the NSWRL Jim Beam Cup Competition for the 2008 Season.
Cronulla Caringbah Sharks will compete against the current clubs in the competition as well as the other new entrant's, one being a Western Australian team, the Western Reds.
NSWRL are currently under negotiations with Foxtel, to televise the games as they did this year.
The St George Sutherland Shire leader will report on the games throughout the 2008 season.
Local Sutherland Shire radio station 2SSR 99.7FM will also update the team's progress.
Graeme Bloor, Cronulla Caringbah Sharks President said at the Jim Beam Cup Presentation night on Wednesday 3rd October 2007, that this is a fantastic opportunity for all Rugby League Players in the Shire.
There is now a clear pathway for players to reach the NRL.
Cronulla Sutherland Sharks now have a pathway for juniors starting with the Junior Representative sides Mathews Cup and SG Ball.
The players could then go on to make the Sharks National Youth under 20's team. If they are over 20, they could then use the Jim Beam Cup and the Premier League pathway to reach their goals.
There are one of only a few NRL teams that can boast this complete set up.
Graeme also reiterated that this was not just for the players of Cronulla Caringbah Sharks but all rugby league players in the district.
Graeme said that there has been an enormous amount of work done to get the team into the competition by the Cronulla Caringbah Sharks. The Cronulla Sutherland Sharks supported the application process, but this was just the start of the hard work.
Most clubs that we will be competing against have very large leagues clubs backing them and the cost to compete in this competition is over $250,000.
Graeme said the Cronulla Caringbah Sharks were in need of a major sponsor for the team, they would have the opportunity to display their business name on the playing jumpers as well as other advertising and promotional options.
We are also asking all business's in the shire to get behind us with their support and sponsorship and if they are interested in this exciting inaugural year to contact Peter Malone at pmalone1@... or phone 0413511090 for an opportunity to discuss sponsorship packages that are on offer.
We also have a 200 club where supporters will become the 200 foundation members, receiving a specially designed polo shirt and cap for their donation of $250.00, once again if people are interested they need to contact Peter. Cronulla Sharks Online

RECOVERY - With Dr Aaron Coutts BSc App (HMS-ExMan) (UQ), MHMSc (CQU), Ph.D. (CQU), MAAESS
Aaron Coutts is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism. He completed undergraduate degrees in Applied Science at UQ before gaining his Masters and Ph.D. from CQU. Aaron teaches in the areas of exercise physiology, fitness assessment and exercise prescription and has strong interest in the physiological and biochemical responses to physical training and exercise.
Written by Hanna James McCarthy
"......physiologically it is very important to get ourselves re- hydrated.
"During a match, the muscle cells become dehydrated and so your cells are getting smaller.
"They shrink and as they get smaller they don't recover as quickly and utilise carbohydrate or recover proteins as fast."
Consequently, the cells are re-hydrated first. As the season progresses, the players adjust quickly to their personal recovery routines.
Coaches and staff ensure that they are educated about the various processes; from re-hydrating, they go straight to their debrief.
Injuries are treated, and proteins and carbohydrates are combined with amino acids to increase the recovery of muscles. At this point, these carbohydrates are being replaced not just by supplements, but by fruit and sandwiches.
As an NRL player uses up to 900 grams of carbohydrate in a game, they need to replace them as quickly; the aim is to replace approximately 90 grams in an hour.
Sports drinks are also beneficial here as they are essentially fluid, and contain carbs as well as electrolytes.
After the body is refreshed, it is then time to shift on to physical recovery.
Low intensity exercise, whether it be on the field or in the pool, is scheduled to remove metabolic byproducts and lactates from the system as well as allowing players to cool down.
For example, Coutts prescribes that the pool sessions last approximately twenty minutes. Designed to help the large muscle groups, it works to repair the muscle fibre that has been depleted by a loss of carbohydrates and has been dehydrated.
While it does not work to rehydrate cells and restore carbohydrates, it focuses on reducing instability and stiffness following the game.
Primarily, pool work and ice baths are used to reduce inflammation.
By decreasing the inflammation (if there is swelling), you can increase recovery.
Low intensity exercise in the pool is interchanged with cold immersion. Traditionally, players will have a warm shower first, and then move to an ice bath.
The immersion process concentrates on producing a flushing effect in the muscles as the cool closes up the blood vessels to stop the blood flow; the warm opens up the vessels and flushes them out, and the cold closes them off.
This allows for the removal of any metabolic substances and any byproducts that produced as a result of exercise. The actual amount of immersion time varies; a balance must be found in regard to what is practical for the team.
Yet recovery also has a social component. Included as apart of a regulated routine, stepping away from the game can be one of the best methods to assist in a players relaxation and recovery.
"We've got a system where we measure the stress of our players quite closely during the week and during games. We try and match our recovery to the stress that we measure."
Coutts says "We've got methods where we can measure whether the stress is coming from physical stress or it is coming from training, or sources away from training. We can look at reasons why and we can individually adopt individual strategies to improve their recovery."
These strategies are centred around the following; sleeping properly, not sleeping too much and a decent diet.
Essentially, it depends on the individual. Consistency in recovery and lifestyle will allow for better performance, it is just..................Click here and purchase all 36 RLCM eBooks over 4000 pages] on one CD-ROM.
