NZ fires the first shot at Roos
By Brent Read
THE head of the New Zealand Rugby League has waved a red flag in front of the Australian forwards in the lead-up to Sunday's Test in Wellington, claiming the Kangaroos are at their most vulnerable in years.
Australia is without several key players, including captain Darren Lockyer and halfback Johnathan Thurston, while forward Willie Mason has openly conceded his form was scratchy over the closing weeks of the NRL season.
NZRL chairman Andrew Chalmers took the opportunity to further test the Kangaroos' resolve by firing the first verbal shot before the game at Wetspac Stadium.
"I think with past teams, when the Kiwis have played against Australia they have had that air of being formidable," Chalmers said.
"You look at Australia - they're going to be very, very tough. I'm not suggesting it's not going to be. But they don't have that air of ... that past Australian Test sides have had.
"You look at the sides they have had in the past, they have been loaded with superstars. They're vulnerable. You better believe it."
Chalmers' comments came as national selector Bob McCarthy warned he would be watching closely to see whether the Australian players handled an expected Kiwi barrage.
Coach Ricky Stuart made it clear the Kangaroos had been selected with a view to matching the Kiwis' physical presence.
However, those plans suffered a blow when Cronulla lock Paul Gallen was ruled out with a shoulder problem, leading to a call-up for Melbourne's Dallas Johnson.
While Johnson is regarded as one of the game's most proficient defenders, his presence won't strike fear into New Zealand.
The Kiwis are also confident they have the measure of Mason after last year's match in Auckland, when the Bulldogs enforcer came off second-best in a brutal collision with New Zealand forward David Kidwell.
"The hardest game you can play of footy is in New Zealand - in the wet. They tackle from there up," McCarthy said, gesturing to his head.
"You can see how tough blokes are. We're going to find out what they have got on Sunday. If they don't lift, they're no good to us."
Five-eighth Greg Bird is among those looking to impress. The Cronulla utility pipped Sydney Roosters pivot Braith Anasta for the No6 jersey and will play Sunday's Test armed with advice from former Australia captain Andrew Johns on the nuances of playing in the halves.
Neither side is likely to play an expansive game given rain is forecast in the lead-up to the game, meaning Bird could end up playing predominantly as a seventh forward.
"I just got a little bit of guidance on how it's going to be over there and how to play in the halves," Bird said.
Bird began his career as a five-eighth but admits he struggled to handle playing alongside Brett Kimmorley. He eventually found a home in the backrow before returning to the role this year, playing well enough to win promotion to the NSW side for the third State of Origin game.
Meanwhile, next year's World Cup continues to gather momentum with British broadcaster Sky Sports committing to live coverage of all games. Read more The Australian

2008 Rugby League World Cup on Sky Sports
The 2008 Rugby League World Cup has received further recognition with the decision from Britain's Sky Sports to commit to live coverage of all 18 matches of next year's tournament as well as five of next month's qualifying matches.
With three spots in the main draw still to be decided, Sky Sports have committed to giving fans the opportunity to see which nations will complete the ten team final World Cup draw.
Sky Sports joins Australian rights holder the Nine Network in having already committed to the 2008 event.
"A number of negotiations are nearing their final stages and Rugby League fans can be ensured that the tournament will be telecast across millions of viewers around the world", the RLIF Chairman and World Cup Tournament Director, Mr Colin Love AM, said today.
"The interest that is building around the tournament is phenomenal.
"With the schedule of matches now released, the final qualifying games only weeks away and tickets due to go on sale shortly, there is a real sense of excitement building around this event.
"The support from Governments, major venues, players and fans continues to build towards the 2008 World Cup being a major sporting event in Australia and a chance to showcase internationally. "It's pleasing to see that the estimated worldwide audience is already significant and growing as we move closer to the event."
Announcing the coverage, Vic Wakeling, Managing Director, Sky Sports, said: "After the outstanding success of the Super League play-offs in recent weeks, we are delighted to be able to offer even more top-class Rugby League.
"The format of the competition guarantees some fiercely competitive games with England taking on the might of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea - and it will be fascinating to see how the smaller nations fare in the other groups. We should get an early pointer on their chances, of course, when we cover next month's five qualifiers on Sky Sports."
"The enthusiasm for the tournament continues to be really encouraging and the significance of Sky Sports' decision, in particular, reinforces the importance to all concerned," Mr Love said.
"The partnership between the Rugby League World Cup and one of the world's leading broadcasters in Sky Sports is one of enormous importance.
"Not only does Sky Sports take the competition to an incredibly wide audience but their ability to capture the drama and excitement of major sport is respected throughout the world.
"Their commitment to the event is underlined by the fact that they are broadcasting the five qualifying matches in the UK next month which will determine the final three spots in the 2008 World Cup competition."
The Rugby League World Cup begins on Saturday, October 25, 2008 with the final to be played at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, November 22.
In 2007, Sky Sports will cover the final five qualifying matches from November 2 to November 14.

Wayne Bennett part of Broncos stability
THE one thing the Brisbane Broncos have always been able to bank on is stability.
In the 20-year history of the club the one constant has been the man in the head coach's office.
Wayne Bennett has dealt with his share of controversies over his tenure, but he has always come through the other side.
Six premierships, 16 successive finals appearances and a career-winning strike rate of more than 60 per cent has always dulled the blades of the critics.
But it now seems certain Benny's reign at Brisbane is coming to an inevitable close and the club is about to enter uncharted waters as a result. Read more Courier Mail

RUGBY LEAGUE COACHING MANUALS Extract from RLCM Yearbook 3
Steve Folkes written by Hanna James McCarthy
......ten minutes to go in the game, and you're behind the opposition by a single try. On the back of three repeat sets of six, the opposition is weakening.
They've been defending their line solidly throughout the game, yet little holes are beginning to appear; there is a noticeable gap forming between the five-eight and the halfback, and every time they rush forward to attack the ball carrier, the gap widens.
All that is needed to claim victory is to feign to the right, before passing to the dummy runner who can bolt through the halves and score under the posts.
The clock runs down, and you know you need to run that crucial play. However, the halfback wants to run wide and try and score around the wing, claiming that the opposition won't even see them coming.
The five-eight wants to chip the ball over the top, setting the winger in position right beneath the ball, ready to score and the lock forward wants to go himself. The coach doesn't care what you do as long as you get the winning result.
Play continues, the whistle blows. The game is over. What could have been a great victory is simply another loss, something that could have been avoided if for one essential element of any teams game plan; communication.
On the field or off, Steve Folkes stresses the importance of communication; between the head coach and his staff, between players, and especially between the players and their coach.
Stronghold of the Canterbury Bulldogs for ten years and counting, Folkes has lead the team to two grand finals and a premiership from five finals outings.
A strong believer in perfecting the basics of the game, he learnt long ago which buttons to push to achieve success within his squad.
Button number one: players socialising together and forming friendships off the field. Steve Folkes places special emphasis on his players enjoying time together when they're not in uniform or at training.
His theory is that if team mates gain the trust of one another in social situations, the better they will work together on the field. Using the example of Sherwin and Holsworth, Folkes believes that the better the relationship between the pair, the more "harmonious partnership" the halves will have.
The more they train together, and show each other a shared commitment to the game, the bond grows, and so does their confidence on the field.
Players begin to build some cohesion, and the team automatically reacts in kind. They talk more on the field, and the job gets done..................Click here and purchase all 36 RLCM eBooks over 4000 pages] on one CD-ROM.
