Homecoming a special one for Kiwis hooker
Kiwis and North Queensland rugby league player David Faiumu came full circle when he trained at Wise Park in Wainuiomata. The 24-year-old hooker, who spent his school days training at the Lower Hutt suburb's main rugby league ground, returned to the ground with his Kiwis teammates as they prepare for the centenary test against the Kangaroos in Wellington on Sunday.

Lima's the man for a gruelling grind
The Kangaroos are expecting the Wellington weather to turn Sunday's test into a gruelling grind in the forwards. If that's the case, the Kiwis will be well-served by their new bench prop Jeff Lima, who blitzed the Manly forwards as the Storm steamrolled to the title in the NRL grand final.

Bronco players Ian Lacey and John Te Reo axed

BRISBANE fired Ian Lacey and John Te Reo after Lacey today appeared in court charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

Brisbane boss Bruno Cullen says he doubts the NRL club can tighten its player code of conduct any more despite being forced to rip up the contracts.

Forwards Ian Lacey and John Te Reo were shown the door following internal investigations into an alleged incident near a Brisbane CBD hotel in the early hours of Saturday morning after the club's gala presentation ball.

A 32 year-old man was in hospital today suffering from a fractured skull and possible brain damage.

Lacey, 22, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court today charged with grievous bodily harm over the assault in Charlotte Street.

He was granted bail and ordered not to have any contact with Te Reo or the complainant until his committal hearing in January.

Police still want to question Auckland-born Te Reo, who is believed to be holidaying in New Zealand.

"Seriously, I don't think we can (toughen the code of conduct)," said Cullen.

"We've been told it's by far the toughest in the land in any code, I've been told that by NRL CEOs and by other codes across the board."

Brisbane's image has taken a battering recently after it axed Brett Seymour and Neville Costigan last year for repeated alcohol-related indiscretions.

The club had hoped the drastic action would deliver a stern warning to its players.

But a Sydney newspaper this weekend carried pictures of departing Broncos utility Shaun Berrigan in a drunken state at a Brisbane leagues club.

Another newspaper reported Test centre Justin Hodges had to be told to quieten down during the club's glittering presentation ball where coach Wayne Bennett angered board members by refusing to make an acceptance speech when presented with life membership of the club.

Cullen accepted the players had put the club in the public glare this time.

But he said alcohol was a "society thing" not isolated to footballers or the Broncos.

"Without trying to take the spotlight off the Broncos because it's certainly upon us and we've brought it upon us, our players have, this is a real society thing," he said.

"This problem occurs certainly if not weekly certainly more than once a month across the board in society.

"It's highlighted because we've got a high profile footy club and two players in it who have allegedly committed an offence.

"That might be good in a sense that it highlights that these things do go on.

"But it's a society problem. It's not isolated to with NRL or any sport in particular or to Brisbane Broncos.

"Unfortunately it's a society problem and we're fighting a pretty hard battle against it quite frankly." Foxsports

Craig Bellamy announced as coach of 2008 NSW Wizard Blues

Fresh from his premiership triumph with the Melbourne Storm, Craig Bellamy now has his sights set on interstate success after today being announced as coach of the NSW Wizard Blues for the 2008 Centenary Harvey Norman State Of Origin Series.

The NSW Rugby League announced Mr Bellamy's appointment following today's board meeting in Sydney.

"We're delighted that Craig has accepted the position," NSW Rugby League Chairman, Mr Colin Love AM, said today.

"His record speaks for itself.

"As the coach of the Melbourne Storm and NSW Country, Craig has earned the respect and admiration of players and officials alike and I am sure he will bring that same determination to succeed to the NSW Wizard Blues.

"It will be a memorable Origin series and one of the highlights of the Centenary celebrations."

Mr Bellamy, the assistant Kangaroos coach since 2004 and NSW Country coach for the past three seasons, guided the Melbourne Storm to consecutive minor premierships - the first club to do so since the formation of the NRL - before claiming the 2007 NRL Telstra Premiership.

"I'm honoured to be given this opportunity," Craig said today.

"Every player aspires to compete at this level and it's the same for coaches.

"Queensland have won the last two series and are going to be very hard to beat again. It's a great challenge for us and we'll be giving it everything we can."

Wizard Home Loans Executive Chairman, Mr Mark Bouris, the major sponsor of the NSW Wizard Blues, congratulated Bellamy on his appointment.

"Craig is up there with the best coaches in Rugby League today," Mr Bouris said.

"He brings a huge amount of passion and big-game experience to the team, which is a key component to beating Queensland.

"It will also be interesting to see Craig coach against some of his leading senior players at the Storm, which I think will add another dimension to the series."

Sydney will host the first and third matches in next year's Origin series, with the second game to be played in Brisbane.

As part of next year's Centenary celebrations, the teams will wear 1908 heritage jerseys in the opening match of the series.

RUGBY LEAGUE COACHING MANUALS

Extract from An Approach To Coaching Rugby League - Page 6

By Ray Unsworth, Coach Education RFL UK

....the use of a long-term athlete development model is far different, advocating a much longer and more systematic approach.

Not only is this approach proven to produce more elite level athletes and players but also a greater base of athletes who are nearing their genetic potential in physical capacities.

Consider that in comparison to what I call our winning by Sunday approach. Here we experience most of our successes early in the player's development, very often producing junior champions and teams, due to our early specialisation approach, only to find that ultimately these players do not excel at adult level.

This is due to (in some cases) a distinct lack of physical excellence caused by developmental neglect in the early years.

Rugby League, as an open skill sport, is regarded in athlete development terms as a "late specialisation sport".

Late specialisation sports follow a six-stage model: FUNdamentals (Movement Literacy)Mini-mod football: 6 - 9yrs males, 6 - 8yrs females.

The emphasis in this phase is on the development of fundamentals - movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, agility, balance and hand eye coordination that are the basis of most sports.

The focus is on the acquisition of basic motor skills, fitness and fun rather than on competition and winning.

Participation in as many activities/sports as possible is encouraged during this phase to ensure that young people experience a wide range of sports and do not specialise too early.

Learning to Train (Sports Literacy) Mod games, transition football international rules: 9 - 12yrs males, 8 - 11yrs females.

This phase builds on the FUNdamentals and develops a range of basic sports skills with a major focus on sport skill acquisition and movement mastery. It introduces and ideally masters all basic sport skills.

In addition, non-weight bearing games and exercises are introduced with warm up and mental skills.

The major emphasis during this phase should be on the consolidation of sport specific skills, development of fitness and further development of mental skills.

This does not mean that young players should not compete but that a better balance of training to competition is required.

Ideally sixty percent training to forty percent competition ratio is recommended.

Training to Train (Sport Selection and Talent Identification) Junior football, scholarship programmes 12 - 16yrs males, 11 - 15yrs females.

Training to Compete (Specialisation and Developing Potential) Youth football, junior and senior Academy grades and open age: 16 - 21yrs males.

The focus in this fourth phase is on developing advanced sport specific skills, mental skills and techniques, which are developed along side tactics and game strategies, as well as individualised conditioning programmes.

About eighty percent of activities should be sport and individual specific.

A young player is likely to be involved in selected competitions (fifty percent) at this phase and over training or too much competition must be avoided.

Training to Win (Expert Performance and Realising Potential) First grade and open age competition: 21yrs.

At this phase, all of the young player's physical, technical, tactical and mental capacities are now fully established.

The focus is on specific training to achieve optimum performance at key competitions and maintenance of the capacities needed to compete successfully.

Ideally, twenty-five percent of training at this phase is likely to be sport specific and/or event orientation with seventy-five percent competition............Click here and purchase all 36 RLCM eBooks [over 4000 pages] on one CD-ROM.
