Broncos set to fight back
By Matt Marshall
BRONCOS legend Steve Renouf has tipped Brisbane to go "back to the future" next season and replicate the club's stunning rebirth of 2000.
The Brisbane great has cast off the doom and gloom forecasts hanging heavy over Wayne Bennett's new-look squad, predicting the arrival of another golden era to mirror the club's feats of eight years ago.
While betting agencies have deserted Brisbane, listed at $15 by Lasseters, the mercurial former centre believes the fresh-faced Broncos will give rampant premiers Melbourne's title defence a massive shake.
Renouf has rubbished fears the Broncos must endure a rebuilding phase in the wake of departures to five long-serving players.
"I really believe they'll be right in the mix come September next year as long as they keep their key players on the field," Renouf said. "I don't think it's all doom and gloom, they'll still travel well, they've got every reason to be confident."
The current climate surrounding Brisbane is eerily similar to the 1999-2000 off-season, when the club farewelled Renouf and a host of other stalwarts - including the club's greatest servant Allan Langer.
After Brisbane's tumultuous '99 season, which mirrored 2007 when Wayne Bennett's squad overcame a horror early-season start to sneak into the finals, the club farewelled Langer, Renouf, Andrew Gee, John Plath and Peter Ryan and their combined 975 first-grade games' worth of experience.
That shake-up was arguably more tumultuous than that facing the current class of Broncos following the departures of Petero Civoniceva, Brad Thorn, Shaun Berrigan, Dane Carlaw and Brent Tate.
In 2000, a reborn Broncos claimed their fifth premiership, and Renouf senses a similar feat is possible for the club's Generation Next if key men Darren Lockyer, Justin Hodges, Karmichael Hunt and Tonie Carroll remain fit.
He tips new recruits Joel Clinton, Ashton Sims and Peter Wallace to make an immediate impact.
"The younger guys have shown enough now that they can handle it," Renouf said.
"And the guys they've got coming are fair players, they won't lose anything there. Joel Clinton is tough, I like the way he plays, he only knows one way which is hard up the middle.
"Look at the forwards they've got, I really think they'll be okay." Read more Courier Mail

Agility by QRL Coaching and Development
The complete Rugby League footballer must possess a wide variety of different skills and abilities to successfully play the game.
In addition to the more obvious physical qualities such as flexibility, strength, speed and power, the player also needs to be agile in his movements on the field.
Agility includes the ability to change direction quickly, accelerate, to twist and turn, to out-manoeuvre an opponent.
On a football field it is reasonable to expect that these actions will also be deliberate and controlled.
Activities in the game such as playing the ball quickly, moving up and back in defence, accelerating, changing direction and stepping, regaining your feet quickly after making a tackle require high levels of agility in their execution.
Agility when rapid response is required involves explosive efforts that produce these changes in movement and body position.
Coaches and trainers need to differentiate between agility and speed. However, agility could be expected to have a high degree of rapidity about it, training should be characterised by short sharp movements involving changes of direction and/or body position.
Speed training alone will not have a big influence on improving a player's agility.
Accordingly, speed and agility should be treated as separate components BUT, inside the actual movement it is essential to train speed of movement.
The game of rugby league is unpredictable in its nature and players need to be able to react quickly to situations in the game and then move as efficiently as possible.
Most of the time these movements will require high levels of agility in their performance.
There is no doubt agility has a reaction component simply because it involves change. Agility when rapid response is required involves explosive efforts that produce these changes in movement and body position.
Sometimes these movements will be completed in a time period of 3-4 seconds or less e.g. a dash from dummy half, followed by a play-the- ball and then a period of no involvement allowing the player a good recovery. At the other end of the scale the player's involvement may be 3 or 4 consecutive tackles around the ruck, followed by a cover defending sprint resulting in another tackle.
Both of these circumstances in the game need to be addressed and trained separately.
It is the actual agility movement inside the sequence of events that should be trained (keep this in mind when doing the drills........Click here and purchase all 36 RLCM eBooks [over 4000 pages] on one CD-ROM.
