Bowen 'too small' for Tests
Matt Marshall
RICKY Stuart and the Australian selectors were called "mad and crazy" by league legends after the admission Matt Bowen's size cost him a Test jumper.
The devastated Cowboys star weighs more than a host of the game's greats, including the late "Little Master" Clive Churchill. At 79kg and 175cm he is 9kg heavier and 10cm taller than Allan Langer was when he was chosen to make his Origin debut in 1987.
But the 2007 Dally M Fullback of the Year is still deemed by Stuart to be too small to play the Kiwis on enemy soil on October 14, a decision that has sparked a heated backlash.
Legendary former Kangaroos halfback Tommy Raudonikis, who backed Langer's controversial elevation to the Origin arena two decades ago, last night responded angrily to the latest revelations.
"That's a cop-out. I can't see any sense in that. It's madness . . . craziness," Raudonikis said. "It's a cop-out from selectors. Blokes said Alf (Langer) was too small and I stuck up for him. He was like a baby and I nursed him. There's been plenty of little back-rowers also, like Gilly (Trevor Gillmeister), who took 'em on.
"You need size in other positions but at fullback you only need brilliance, and Bowen's got plenty of that. He's got plenty of ticker as well, the young fella.
"I can't understand it. As much as I respect Ricky Stuart's opinion, that's madness.
"He wasn't that physical himself."
Manly fullback Brett Stewart, who at 86kg and 186cm is 7kg heavier and 11cm taller than Bowen, has been given the nod for his Test debut in Wellington.
Former Australian halfback Steve Mortimer argued Bowen's stature shouldn't be an issue.
"Personally I don't think size should be a problem but it's up to Ricky. He's the coach," Mortimer said. "The fact is, Bowen is worthy of the Australian jumper, but so are (Billy) Slater and Stewart.
"Matty's toughness should not be questioned. Size shouldn't matter."
Responding to questions on Sydney radio yesterday, Stuart said Bowen's size had counted against him.
Stuart said: "That is something that has been spoken about. Yes, it is (a factor). I'm not going to try and cover that fact and just purely support Matty.
"The bigger frame, the bigger fullback physically, does have a bit of an advantage there."
Multiple premiership-winner Kevin Walters said Bowen's teammates wouldn't swap him "for all the tea in China". "Everyone knows his worth, particularly the Cowboys," he said. "Ricky's entitled to his opinion but most people north of the border disagree with him."
Legendary fullback Gary Belcher, also critical of Bowen's omission, said the Cowboys fullback had been bitterly unlucky. "His size probably counted against him in the past but it shouldn't have this time," Belcher said. "He's not that much smaller than Stewart or Slater, and he's certainly a lot stronger than he was."
Stuart did acknowledge Bowen's skills, rejecting comments from Wendell Sailor suggesting Bowen wasn't cut out for rep footy.
"I have, over a few beers with mates, argued the fact that I think he's the most valuable player in the competition this year, for his team," Stuart said.

Moimoi, Tuiaka still not cleared to play
Kiwis pair Fuifui Moimoi and Taniela Tuiaki face a nervous wait to be cleared for their Test debuts after the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) summoned lawyers to examine the eligibility rules.
Both represented Tonga last year and need RLIF clearance to play the trans-Tasman Test against Australia on October 14, but that hadn't been granted when the RLIF executive meeting adjourned in Sydney on Wednesday night.
Australian Rugby League (ARL) chief executive Geoff Carr said lawyers would study the eligibility rules on Thursday morning before a decision was made.
"We're taking legal advice on it," Carr said.
"The rules have to be applied correctly. It will be resolved in the morning."
Carr wouldn't comment further, or expand on what part of the rules were unclear.
The RLIF executive comprises ARL chairman Colin Love, New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) chairman Andrew Chalmers and British Rugby Football League (RFL) chairman Richard Lewis.
Carr said last week he expected no dramas in clearing the pair to face the Kangaroos.
Tuiaki qualifies for the Kiwis as he was being born in New Zealand while Moimoi represented New Zealand A in 2002 and lived in Auckland for seven years, thereby satisfying the residency qualification.
Both were named in coach Gary Kemble's 19-man Test squad on Sunday.
It's almost a year since the Nathan Fien drama saw him pulled from the Kiwis team during the Tri-Nations series, when it was revealed his grandmother wasn't New Zealand-born as the NZRL previously claimed.
Matai's surgery comes before Test The Kiwis hold little hope of fielding centre Steve Matai in this month's rugby league Test against Australia after his club Manly deemed him medically unfit.

Tony Zappia named Sharks CEO
The Cronulla Sharks today announced that the Board of Directors have appointed Tony Zappia to the role of Football Club Chief Executive Officer.
Tony joins the Sharks from his position as Football Operations Manager for the Parramatta Eels where he has spent 7 years as one of the NRL's top Club administrators.
Cronulla Sharks Chairman, Barry Pierce said the Sharks Board had unanimously selected Tony based on his strong experience and professionalism in the management of both football and commercial aspects of an NRL club.
"We were blessed with many high-quality candidates throughout the recruitment process; however we are delighted to have appointed Tony to the role of CEO.
"His proven ability to lead top performing teams and his track record in the administration of the game came highly recommended by many of the games leading administrators. He has demonstrated these skills in his current role at Parramatta.
"The Parramatta Club is recognised as the benchmark for Club administration and its support of the game across all levels. We know Tony will bring with him a great understanding of the issues facing the sport and a thorough knowledge of the working of a Football Club." Pierce concluded.
"I am sad to be leaving Parramatta because it has been such a big part of my life and have made some wonderful friends but the Sharks are entering an exciting stage in their development, and I'm excited to be a part of their future.
"I'm honoured to lead the Club's management team and have the opportunity to build on the foundations and outstanding work in 2007 by Greg Pierce, Ricky Stuart and the Board of Directors". Zappia commented
Tony will take up his new role on Monday 15th October. He succeeds the outgoing CEO Greg Pierce. Sharks Online
2008 Rugby League World Cup
Fiji will bring their flamboyant skills to Wollongong in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.
In announcing venues for the tournament the Rugby League International Federation has confirmed that Fiji will tackle France at WIN Stadium on Saturday, November 1, 2008.
It will be the first match for Fiji in the 10-team tournament and the second for France.
"Fiji combine an attacking flair with a physical defence that makes them a favourite with fans," RLIF Chairman and World Cup Tournament Director, Mr Colin Love AM, said today.
"The French hosted the first World Cup in 1954 and have a tremendous history in the game.
"In recent years the French Rugby League has invested enormous efforts in rebuilding their strength in the game and it is certainly paying dividends.
"Fiji's match against France could well decide which of these teams challenges for a semi-final berth."
The World Cup will be played from Saturday, October 25, to Saturday, November 28, taking in three states and the ACT and 12 venues.
The final will be played at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.
"The interest in the World Cup from overseas fans wanting to come down here has already been extraordinary," Mr Love said.
"The final qualifying matches are soon to get underway in the UK and the final 10 teams for the event will be finalised by the end of this year.
"It's going to be an exciting event for the game and I'm glad to say that Wollongong fans will be an important part of the tournament."
A committee has been formed locally to ensure that the Wollongong World Cup match is a major event in the area.
Details on the full ticketing programme will be released within the next fortnight. More information about the venues and the Rugby League World Cup can be found at www.rlwc08.com

NRL announce new referees to full-time squad
The National Rugby League has today announced the signing of former Kiwi International Henry Perenara, Souths' Paul Mellor and former Roosters flyer Luke Phillips to its squad of full-time referees.
The move sees the trio enter a cadet program designed to fast track current or recently retired players into the refereeing ranks and follows the NRL's substantial investment in full-time referees in 2007.
The intensive cadetship program will see the trio train with the game's professional squad, attend matches and spend the remainder of the week developing their on-field skills through school and junior competitions.
Depending on their progress, their first professional destination could become the Toyota Cup National Youth Competition.
Former Test referee and Telstra Premiership veteran of 314 games, Steve Clark, will oversee the players' progress as he steps down from on-field duties to take a development role across refereeing.
"This is an innovative step for refereeing," NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.
"The increasing pace of the game means that Robert Finch and his team need to look for new ways to keep ahead and the combination of Steve Clark's experience and players who are only just out of the game is a promising one indeed.
"People shouldn't look for these guys to appear in the Telstra Premiership overnight but a program like this is certainly going to build more resources going forward.
"We've seen some good young referees establish themselves this year in Gavin Badger, Tony De Las Heras, Jared Maxwell and Ben Cummins, and we saw Tony Archer rise to the challenge of a Telstra Premiership Grand Final.
"Robert Finch's team of Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper have played a big part in strengthening the pool of refereeing talent and that has put us in a strong position to handle the ongoing demands of the game in general."
As well as the fast-tracking of Mellor, Perenara and Phillips, all players in the Toyota Cup National Youth Competition will undergo a referees' traineeship.
Steve Clark's full-time role overseeing refereeing development will allow him to identify other players who develop a talent for refereeing and who could make a smooth transition from playing to officiating.
"I think it's a really exciting step for the game," he said.
"I was enjoying refereeing but this was simply too good an opportunity to pass up.
"Guys who have played at the elite level have a great understanding of the game and if they are prepared to put in the effort they'd certainly have a head start in getting ready to be a referee.
"That doesn't mean that we give up on those who have taken up refereeing as a specialty from an early age.
"There's plenty of room for people to come from either pathway and my job will be to help identify and encourage the best talent." NRL
