Titans stake claim for home games
By Adam Gardini
THE Gold Coast Titans rugby league club will today submit a request to the NRL for guaranteed home blockbusters against Brisbane, North Queensland and St George Illawarra at Skilled Park next season.
In a boost for Queensland's three sides, the NRL yesterday handed clubs the power to choose which teams they play at home in 2008 after club chief executives voted to remove the pool system previously used to decide the draw.
NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said primarily the change in system was so that local derbies, such as Brisbane's growing rivalry with North Queensland and the Gold Coast, would be assured of being played twice each year.
The Cowboys and Titans were in separate pools this season, meaning they played each other only once.
All clubs have until today to submit a list ranking opponents from one to 15 based on who they most want to play at home next season, with the NRL to try to accommodate as many requests as possible before the draw is released later this month.
Titans managing director Michael Searle said the Gold Coast's priority would be to ensure they host marquee games against Queensland rivals the Broncos and Cowboys, along with hugely popular NRL club, the Dragons.
It is understood the Dragons have more than 17,000 'Red V' members in south-east Queensland and Searle said the new system would give clubs the choice to maximise gate returns and provide fans with blockbuster games.
"I'm a big fan of blockbuster games and particularly local derbies so the Broncos and North Queensland would definitely be two (priorities) and I would imagine St George would be the other one given their incredible following in Queensland.
"Our game gets benchmarked on gate attendances and I think this is a great model that will provide fans with a guarantee that the Titans, the Broncos and the Cowboys play each other twice a year."
Searle said he had already come to an agreement with Cowboys boss Peter Parr that they both nominate the May Day long weekend next year for the scheduling of their clash at Skilled Park.
However, he said he did not have a preference for the timing of the Titans' home clashes with the Broncos or Dragons.
"I don't have a preference as to when we play the Broncos," he said.
"All you've got to do is bring a kicking tee and a football and you've got a sellout crowd."
Searle said he was hopeful the Gold Coast would be allocated a home game for the opening round as a celebration of the unveiling of their new multimillion-dollar stadium at Robina.
"I wouldn't like to see our fans have to wait a week to see the stadium," said Searle.
"It would be like asking a kid to wait until New Year's Eve to open their Christmas presents.
"I would hope we get a home game given it's the opening of the stadium, but to be honest, the day and schedule will be determined by the broadcaster." Gold Coast Bulletin

Club and Coach Development
By QRL Coaching and Development
Traditionally Junior Rugby League Clubs assume their role to provide an outlet to young players to enjoy a sport in a fun, friendly, environment.
However with the advancement of rugby league as a professional sport there are many players who now look to the game as a career in their sporting life.
These players together with those who still only want to be involved for the enjoyment now expect to be properly taught and coached during their junior playing days when the foundation for their future is laid.
The National Coaching Accreditation Scheme endeavours to educate people as coaches and prepare them adequately to perform their role.
Players gain considerable enjoyment out of being able to perform their individual skills to the best of their ability.
Players therefore expect that their coach has the knowledge and expertise with the skills of the game and the ability to pass this information on to them.
Coaches must accept this responsibility and be prepared to apply themselves to their task in junior coaching.
Coaches will also gain a considerable amount of satisfaction in knowing that they have contributed in some way to the development of a player particularly if that player achieves a high level of performance.
I would like to divert some attention to the junior club coaching situation. At the moment many clubs broadly consist of a number of teams with coaches working solely for the benefit of their individual team to perform and in some cases to win a premiership.
This structure must be questioned as to its value in the development of players and I would propose that clubs look toward a unified player development program.
There needs to be a greater emphasis on individual player development in the early mini-footy, mod league years with coaches fulfilling a more responsible role to the individual.
A player development program within the club would see the club coaching structure geared toward the overall development of a player through a coaching syllabus with the aim of producing more complete and skilful players at the end of their junior playing career.
This type of program commences in mini footy with a progression and advancement of skill as players move through the grades.
The program should be structured to provide a full educational experience with a definite purpose and not a fragmented one moving from year to year without a sound progression in the type of activities appropriate to the age group.
Players who perform better will develop more confidence, a higher self esteem and image which in turn enhances their learning, and development as a person.
Adopting and implementing a player development program requires a number of considerations and obviously a lot of work.
The first step in this program is to develop a teaching syllabus which means identifying what needs to be taught and coached for each age group from Under Sevens to Under 17 years.
If we look at Under seven in mini-footy the emphasis will be on basic motor skill movement patterns of individual techniques.
These techniques would be related to the mini-footy game and include the major ones of passing, running in possession, play the ball, catching a ball and tackling.
Coaching would be confined to the understanding of the basic playing of the game.
Teaching the basic techniques (skills) can be achieved through technique drills, practice drills and small sided games.
These should be carried out in a sound and enjoyable environment to enhance learning, so that players develop a good feel for the game and the movements.........Click here and purchase all 36 RLCM eBooks [over 4000 pages] on one CD-ROM.
