NZ Coach Kemble turns to youth for Centenary test
By Mark Geenty
Seven uncapped players including two with the name Jeremy Smith have been named in a fresh-faced Kiwis squad for this month's Centenary test against Australia.
New coach Gary Kemble's 19-man squad for the one-off rugby test in Wellington on October 14 is dotted with exciting youngsters including St George-Illawarra teenager Chase Stanley, nephew of All Black Joe Stanley, and powerful Wests Tigers centre/wing Taniela Tuiaki.
The other newcomers are Melbourne interchange forward Jeff Lima, Parramatta prop Fuifui Moimoi, Cronulla's goalkicking winger Luke Covell and the two Smiths.
Christchurch-born Melbourne Storm second rower Jeremy Smith, 27, was rewarded for his strong season with the NRL minor premiers. His Huntly-born South Sydney namesake, aged 26, will partner the Bulldogs' Ben Roberts in the halves.
Prop Roy Asotasi retains the captaincy. There are just eight returnees from those who played the Anzac test.
Injuries dealt Kemble a tough hand in the selection leadup, with veteran prop Nathan Cayless the latest to be ruled out at the weekend.
Kemble confirmed Cayless would also miss the tour of Britain and France after suffering a pectoral muscle tear that requires surgery.
Others unavailable due to injury, who played against the Kangaroos in April, were Benji Marshall (shoulder), Sonny Bill Williams (broken arm), Iosia Soliola (knee) and Manu Vatuvei (knee).

Three of a kind come up trumps
Three players. Different reasons to celebrate, different redemptions, but last night, Clint Newton, Matt Geyer and Billy Slater sat as one.
Stewart sees stars but, this time, he's not one of them
SICK and sorry Manly fullback Brett Stewart could not remember much of last night's game, which was probably a good thing as he sat, head down, on the floor of the dressing-room.
Invincible Inglis in a class of his own
SAVE the best for last. Greg Inglis listened to that mantra, delivering what he admitted was his finest performance in the No.6 jersey as he led Melbourne to a premiership.
Stewart 'gouge' an accident: Cross
Ugly incident involving a facial massage of Brett Stewart early was an accident says Cross.
Melbourne win sets up intruiging Origin series
Melbourne's emphatic victory last night sets up a mouth-watering prospect for league fans in next year's State of Origin: Brains Bellamy attempting to outwit the player he built, Cam Smith.
Civoniceva in line to lead Roos
PETERO Civoniceva has emerged as a surprise contender for the Australian captaincy in next week's Test against New Zealand, with officials last night believed to be undecided between the veteran prop and Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith.
Manly hit by Storm damage in final rout
There was no choking under the fear of failure, there was no upset. Instead, Melbourne Storm last night confirmed it was the most dominant team of the year when its galaxy of stars brushed aside Manly 34-8 in the NRL grand final at Sydney's Telstra Stadium.
For Hasler, it's a hangdog hell
Hasler would not have liked his team's body language at the 28-minute mark of last night's match.
Storm are ace in the pack
IT WAS intimidating. It was even inspirational. But, in the end, it was totally ineffective.
Bellamy takes inspiration from Boss
BRUCE Springsteen inspired Melbourne to the NRL premiership yesterday.
Crocker's gee-up all Melbourne need
MELBOURNE have not lost a game with Michael Crocker in their side and, last night, the forward who makes King Gee look positively soft showed why.
Beach supporters left in the dark
MUCH of Australia may have been watching the rugby league grand final last night, but it was a footy-free zone on Manly's beachfront.
Granddad's tickled pink with Angus's jersey
JOHN HOWARD'S excitement was palpable yesterday when he was presented with a tiny St George Illawarra rugby league guernsey for his grandson, Angus, at a grand final lunch.
Fans stay home on wet night
LIGHT rain kept many Melburnians away from a live telecast of the NRL grand final at Federation Square last night, but the 200 or so people who turned out on a chilly night in the AFL-obsessed city were treated to a Storm deluge at Telstra Stadium in Sydney.
Faithful flock to see team lift cup
THEIR hair was tinted purple and they painted sea eagles on the cheeks. Storm fans wore giant inflatable violet gloves and the faithful from Sydney's north dressed their babies in miniature Manly football jerseys.
Southerly busters storm Manly
AN exuberant Melbourne Storm bashed, barged and demoralised the Manly Sea Eagles 32-8 to finally capture the NRL premiership that has been two years in the making.
Eels' late try denies Peachey a fitting finale
TWENTY seconds before David Peachey was to be farewelled from the football field in a blaze of glory, the honour was snatched away as Parramatta produced a last-gasp grand final victory.
Sammut's sober approach pays off for Penrith
JARROD Sammut may have missed out on a first-grade Mad Monday, but his sober sacrifice allowed him to drink out of a premiership trophy rather than a schooner glass.

The Defensive Line
By Alex Corvo, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Melbourne Storm 2007 NRL Premiers
An ex-Australian coach often used the following saying to motivate his players "if you tackle soft you play soft".
Anyone that has played Rugby League would likely agree with this statement.
Other comments commonly heard include; "defence won them the game" and "if they don't score we can't lose".
It is also useful to note that when a team stops talking players have stopped tackling.
The most simple description for defence is "the time when a team is not in possession of the ball".
Defence is the act of halting attacking players through effective tackling, delaying play or controlling the attack through positioning-either of support or the ball carrier.
The primary aim is to stop the forward movement of the ball.
On this basis, it would be fair to say that defence forms a vital part of Rugby League and can be assisted by applying some basic principles which include the:-
1. Tackle
2. Straight line
3. Defensive line
4. Advantage line
In addition, these "principles" are supported by:-
1. Forward movement
2. Communication
3. A high level of fitness
The basis of any team's defensive pattern must be the ability of each team member to tackle. Minimising ineffective tackling is an absolute must.
Players who are able to perform one-on-one tackles and put the attacker on the ground are invaluable members of any team.
In the reverse situation attacking players who are able to draw two or more defenders when in possession of the ball will create space and attacking opportunities for team mates, hence the importance of defenders being able to tackle in a one on- one situation.
Communication assumes vital importance in the one-on-one situation and requires some consideration to covering defence.
Thirteen good tackling players do not necessarily make a good defensive team unless they work together as a unit.
A straight line of defence combined with players that can tackle will limit the attacking opportunities of the opposition team.
A defensive line that is not straight is more readily open to penetration.
It is with this in mind that attacking players prey on defenders who move up and out of the line early or who have been "lazy" and not moved up, in both instances failing to keep the line "straight".
The "straight line" for this purpose is the formation of defending players in a straight line in front of the attack.
In this case it is formed on the 10 metre mark at a ruck.
This straight line of defence will be more effective if it moves forward.
The defensive line is simply the straight line that moves forward and assumes a new mark. It is the action between the formation of the straight line and before the tackle. In reality the defence line can move forward, back and sideways.
It takes the defence to the attack and denies it time and space and therefore, options........Click here and purchase all 36 RLCM eBooks [over 4000 pages] on one CD-ROM.
