England-bound Tony Martin holding no grudges - Chris Barclay The Australian centre has inadvertently become a victim of the Warriors' injury free surge to the National Rugby League's (NRL) top four. The fitness and form of Simon Mannering and Jerome Ropati have confined Martin to premier league duty with the Auckland Lions. Throw in stand-off Michael Witt's goalkicking form and Martin - the team's former first-choice kicker - is likely to add to his dozen appearances this season only through teammates' misfortune. Martin was told midway through the season he would not be required at Mt Smart Stadium next year, joining compatriots Todd Byrne and George Gatis as surplus to 2008 requirements. NZ Herald
Disorder may give the game away - Paul Sheehan John Muggleton, assistant coach of the Wallabies, walks out of a gala dinner because somebody forgot to praise him. Scott Johnson, assistant coach of the Wallabies, sucks lemons because rugby league legend Andrew Johns is invited to Wallaby training sessions. John Connolly, coach of the Wallabies, is a lame duck and interim appointment. And the Wallabies haven't even packed their bags for the Rugby World Cup. Too much insecurity; too much uncertainty. Wayne Bennett 'best-ever' coach - Robert Craddock Wayne Bennett's six premierships from his 20 years at the Broncos must make him the game's best-ever coach, according to long-time rival Bob Fulton. Fulton, a famously no-nonsense judge not given to gratuitous praise, has never been a close associate of Bennett but feels his brave and consistent efforts to reshape the Broncos are the key to his success. "Bennett must go down as arguably the game's best coach," said Fulton, himself a two-time premiership-winning coach as well as one of the game's best players.

Crowe advocates free love - Bernie Pramberg Gladiatorial movie star Russell Crowe introduced a "love-in" to South Sydney's early-season training in an attempt to inject passion to the battling team.

Crowe, part-owner of the club with multi-millionaire businessman Peter Holmes a Court, told the players "love will make the difference" and then singled out forward Dean Widders for a hug.

"I love you, Dean Widders," said Crowe, who went on to extol the virtues of the footballer.

"I totally, fundamentally believe this (love) is my core," the actor told the players.

"The thing that will make the difference is love . . . actually accepting the family environment, the brotherhood. I don't see everything has to be about crash, bash and negativity. We're going to achieve a lot more if you actually have higher ideals."

The Rabbitohs bonding session makes interesting viewing in the second episode of the ABC documentary South Side Story that debuts on Tuesday night. The six-part series follows behind-the-scenes developments within the famous club as it reinvents itself under private ownership.

Holmes a Court yesterday admitted he and Crowe had "taken some risks" and used unconventional methods to revitalise the club.

"We were prepared to talk to the players about some things that were relatively unconventional," he said. "You mention the word 'love', and it's a pretty charged word.

"But it's the best word for what these guys feel for each other after playing together and going through what they do. We had to establish bonds and build attitude quickly to become competitive."

Holmes a Court - who admitted the first year of ownership had been much more difficult than he envisaged - said the players had responded well to a cultural change.

"It has been an extraordinary experience in that regard, when you think about the clash of cultures that has come. We've dressed our guys in Italian suits and they've embraced that whole concept," he said.

"Their involvement in the community has increased dramatically, and we've not had an incident of misbehaviour off the field.

"We think the players are the stars and should be celebrated.

"It's giving them respect as sports people and they've embraced that. We started the ball rolling, but now it's in the hands of the players and coach.

"Only yesterday the players had a function with 50 former players for a few beers and a chat on what it means to play for Souths. That initiative came from the present players."

Holmes a Court, Souths executive chairman, said the club had been operating on an annual budget of about $9.5 million until this season, when almost twice that much was needed to be successful.

"To be a really top team it's probably closer to $20 million," he said.

Souths has a strong supporter base in Queensland (22 per cent of club membership), but Holmes a Court said relocation was not an option. "Our club has a real sense of place. It's about the heart of South Sydney around Redfern." Courier Mail

Wembley trip a dream come true for Stacey Jones Catalans Dragons captain Stacey Jones believes their first Challenge Cup final appearance will leave a legacy for French rugby league, regardless of the result of next month's title-fight with St Helens at Wembley.

The 31-year-old New Zealander played a key role in the establishment of another outpost club, NZ Warriors, and their run to the 2002 Australian finals, and helped the unfancied Kiwis reach the last two Tri-Nations series finals.

However he rated Monday's (NZ time) 37-24 semifinal win over Wigan among his most notable achievements.

"It's certainly right up there," he told the Liverpool Daily Post.

"One of the reasons I came to this club was to help French rugby league get to a level where they're going to be strong internationally.

"Hopefully something like this will not only be great for us as players and for our supporters but for the young kids in France coming through who will think this is a great game to play."

Jones, who recently signed a new 12-month contract to play for the Catalans in 2008, believes his appearance at the new Wembley against holders St Helens on August 25 will be one of the highlights of his distinguished career.

"When you're a kid watching the Challenge Cup, it's not only the English players but the players Down Under who see it as a massive occasion," he said.

"It will be a dream for all of us."

The appearance of the Perpignan club in the final will provide an unexpected bonus for St Helens, who will now be able to satisfy the huge demand from their supporters for tickets.

The Rugby Football League were ready to put up the "house full" signs, having sold 55,000 tickets before the semifinals, which left 10,000 for each of the finalists and approximately 15,000 reserved for Club Wembley members.

The Catalans, who took around 500 fans to Warrington for the semifinal, expect about 2500 to make the trip to Wembley, paving the way for Saints to take an extra allocation.

The League are also negotiating the purchase of spare Club Wembley seats in the event that the final heads for a 90,000 sell-out. NZ Herald

UK player seeks Australian club for 2008

I'm planning on coming to Australia in January 2008 and looking at playing rugby league whilst there.

My plans are to stay in one place for pre-season and the competition season for 2008, then after the season finishes is to travel around Australia.

I have played representative rugby league and toured Australia with the GB/England Students U19's in 2003.

I'm currently a player at Leeds Akkies who compete in the summer National Conference [formerly NL3].

My preferred positions are stand-off/full-back.

I would be looking for accomodation/employement whilst playing rugby for 4-5 months.

Any clubs that would be interested can email me at
bnaboz6@... request any more information you may need.

Extract from the RLCM Junior Coaching Book 1 - One Coaches Philosophy

With Nigel Goodings
........over the past 30 - odd years, I must have seen thousands of games, played in hundreds, witnessed dozens of breathtaking moments and even scored a few times myself, but I have just one abiding memory that will live with me forever.

It was the day my 11 year old son scored his first try in the team that I coached.

The range of emotions was like nothing I'd ever felt before and even now brings tears to my eyes.

Firstly there was the joy that he had scored. Then came the pride that all fathers feel, "that's my boy out there".

As if that was not enough, this score hit me square between the eyes with the realisation that I had made a difference.

The team had been together for about 5 months, including the "pre- season" training and contained several kids who had played at least part of the previous season as our "Under 10's".

They had trained hard, picked up one or two new players and had begun to show more than just a little bit of promise.

This article is hopefully more than just a diary of the transition from Under 10's to Under 11's or even an attempt to claim any of the credit for myself.

This is simply an attempt to document a few of the basics :-
1. How, given a particular group of individuals, we have produced a team which has accomplished its goals.

2. How children of a very young age can adapt to and play to a simple game plan.

3. How all coaches, regardless of experience, must look to the juniors in order to see the future.

This article represents my personal views, thoughts and beliefs about the training, development and coaching of young players and does not necessarily reflect the views of any other organisation.

PART 1
1. COACHING PRINCIPLES
Whatever age group you are coaching, you need to :-

a. Know what your Personal Principles are.
b. Know what your Coaching Principles are.
c. Know what your abilities/ strengths are.
d. Know what "honesty" is.
e. Be prepared never to compromise or sacrifice any of the above.

Fine words, what do they mean?

A. PERSONAL PRINCIPLES
By this I mean that you must take a long hard look at yourself before you take the job and question yourself:

1. Will you turn up to coach the team?
2. How many times per week?
3. How long is the season?
4. Are you fit enough?
5. Knowledgeable enough?
6. Why do you want to coach?
7. Does your child play in the team ?
8. Will you treat everyone equally?

There are dozens of similar questions that you will ask yourself before you start and if you have the slightest doubt that you are either unsure about your ability or durability, then perhaps you need to give it some more thought.

In my case, the answers were:
1. Yes, although I have had to completely alter the way that I schedule my "day job" as I travel a lot. I believe that this is the kind of commitment that you have to be prepared to make...........Join the RLCM Monthly Club and receive RLCM Junior Coaching eBooks 1-2-3 on CD-ROM with articles as per above, plus 4 DVD's/CD's monthly, two current and two back resources.
