Make Freddy the boss, say Roosters - Stuart Honeysett and Brent Read He may be only two weeks into the job and about to face his greatest challenge, but Sydney Roosters legend Brad Fittler already has the backing of his players to inherit the coaching job for next season.
In a situation reminiscent of when Paul Roos graduated from caretaker to the top job at the Sydney Swans in 2002, Fittler has received the nod of approval from his side as it prepared for tonight's match against premiership heavyweight Melbourne at the Sydney Football Stadium.
Fittler put his hand up to take over from Chris Anderson two weeks ago, but is no guarantee to retain the job, with the club delaying a decision for at least a fortnight.
Roos was installed in a caretaker capacity following the departure of Rodney Eade but looked like missing out on the top job, with the Swans pursuing then-Western Bulldogs coach Terry Wallace.
That situation changed dramatically following public pressure. There was also support for Roos from among the players. The board responded by appointing Roos at the end of the season and he justified their faith when he ended a 72-year premiership drought for the club in 2005.
When asked if there was symmetry between Fittler's and Roos' situation, Roosters captain Craig Fitzgibbon replied: "It's probably pretty similar. It's so far, so good.
"It's a tough one because it's only been two weeks into it, but obviously we'd like him to stay.
"He's doing a terrific job and we're hopeful he can stay on, that's for sure. But we don't get to make that decision."
Injured fullback Anthony Minichiello, who like Fitzgibbon played alongside Fittler, said he had been impressed by Fittler's start of two wins from as many games.
"I would love to see him stay," Minichiello said. "He's highly respected throughout the club.
"The blokes respect him. When he asks you to do something, he's been there and done it all before, so you respond. Everyone loves him. Everyone loves him through the whole game. I think he'll do a good job."
Fittler has already declared his interest in the top job but doesn't see tonight's match-up against Storm as a chance to cement his claims.
"I have never, ever thought of coaching in that way," Fittler said yesterday. "I have always thought of it as a group thing. It's been so quick. I'm just trying to learn about what it takes to be a coach. This (tonight) is the biggest test for any team.
"You can put your best game on and still get beaten.
"They are the best in the business. They are a well-oiled machine. They're lethal."
Fitzgibbon said the best way the players could support Fittler would be to continue to win and compete strongly.
"That's how we can hold up our end of the bargain for him by playing well and that's what we're hoping to do for him," Fitzgibbon said.
"Freddy has said if he takes it on he's prepared to deal with the consequences that other coaches would.
"Coaching is measured by success and he's confident he can do the job and not have to get to that point."
Fitzgibbon said Fittler had grown into the role since inheriting it when Anderson resigned, providing structure in both attack and defence. "He's been pretty good, he hasn't changed too much," Fitzgibbon said.
"We've responded at training so far and with two wins under out belt, and we keep responding to the challenges, hopefully it can become a good partnership."
The Roosters face a tough assignment against the ladder-leading Storm, which has the luxury of resting key players Matt Geyer and Ryan Hoffman. The Australian

Graham Lowe laid low but can't stay away from league - Peter Jessup The NZRL's director of football, Graham Lowe, is at home recovering after a successful operation to remove a blood clot from a major artery in his leg.
Lowe, who has suffered heart and brain haemorrhage problems in previous years, went to his specialist after feeling unwell.
"I had an MRI scan and he spotted it straight away," the former Kiwis coach said.
He had arterial bypass surgery in his left leg at the Mercy Hospital and after a week there has been allowed home and told to rest, with full recovery less than a month away.
He still managed to meet Kiwis selectors Darrel Williams and Daryl Halligan this week and is talking to fellow Kiwis coaching selectors Frank Endacott and convenor Howie Tamati.
Lowe said work and the stress that went with his job was not a factor in his health problem. "It's a factor in my blood, I always have to watch it."
The selectors will meet next week to determine which of the prospective Kiwis coaching candidates make it to interview stage, and the process to be followed from there in determining a replacement for Brian McClennan.
With applications closing today, the list of candidates could be described as "all the likely suspects", with leading Bartercard and representative coaches Phil Prescott from Canterbury and Bernie Perenara from Waitakere, Paul Bergman from Wellington, former Junior Kiwis coach Gary Kemble and former Kiwi and Warrior Duane Mann all confirmed.
Lowe was confident of finding "another Bluey". NZ Herald

Castleford Tigers eye courts over cap ruling Castleford are considering legal action after Wigan were deducted four points for breaching the salary cap.
Last season the Tigers were relegated from Super League after finishing three points below Wigan in the table.
Castleford chief executive Richard Wright says his club feel "cheated" and criticised the Rugby Football League for not acting more promptly.
"We asked the RFL to deal with this in October, as everyone knew that this was going to happen," said Wright.
"Doing so could have avoided what we believe to be one of the biggest injustices in the history of the sport.
"In simple terms a four-point deduction last year would have kept us in Super League and we felt that we had done enough to achieve that aim - including defeating Wigan both home and away."
Castleford were relegated despite not finishing bottom of the table because French side Catalans Dragons cannot be relegated in their first three years in Super League.
Wigan, who were docked two points last season for breaching the salary cap in 2005, eventually finished eighth in the 2006 campaign.
"We are both devastated and angry," said Wright. "We fought hard and fairly to retain our place in Super League.
"As a club we will now have to sit down with our legal advisors and determine what steps to take next and will be doing so in the very near future.
"We will continue the fight to gain what we believe to be our rightful place in Super League.
"Things were very tight throughout the campaign and just one example of how we feel cheated is that we were outbid by Wigan in our efforts to bring Michael Dobson to the club, a player who was hugely influential in their avoiding the drop."
Wright also queried the amount Wigan are reported to have broken the cap by.
"The news last night raises more questions than answers, not least as to how the maths work in terms of £220,000 being just a 6% breach of a salary cap set at a £1.7m ceiling," he said.
"We hope that all of the details of the case will be made public. What punishment is it to Wigan to be deducted four points this year? It seems to us very little, if any at all." BBC

Hi-tech way for fans to keep their fingers on a player's pulse - Roy Masters The hits in tomorrow night's Collingwood-Brisbane AFL match will literally flow all the way to fans in their lounge rooms, with GPS technology transmitting the impacts of players live to the TV screen.
In a world first, Channel Ten will download data taken from GPS devices attached to 10 players and provide viewers with detail on G forces, impacts, speed, acceleration, heart rate and distances run.
AFL players have been wearing the small transponder type instruments in games for four years, providing coaches with valuable information, but the material has not been transmitted to the public until now.
Footballers sustain or deliver impacts of 10g force, where impacts of 9g and over can cause pilots and astronauts to black out.
AFL players regularly run up to 20 kilometres in a game and some reach speeds of 34kmh, meaning fans will see evidence athletes sprint like Olympic 100-metres champions, run like marathoners, absorb hits like heavyweight boxers, all the while executing the skills of ballerinas.
David Barham, Network Ten's executive producer of AFL, says: "It's an important night for sport generally, the AFL and the clubs who have desperately wanted to use it live in games.
"Hopefully, we can demonstrate it can be used safely and make it as simple and practical for the fans as possible."
Essendon fitness coach John Quinn, coach of Olympic sprinter Lauren Hewitt, will be in the Ten studio to explain the information downloaded from the GPS devices worn by five players each from Collingwood and Brisbane.
"He will be the expert on the night," Barham said. "We're not going to blind fans with science but I'm thinking of putting up on the screen the heart rate of one player for a minute following the centre bounce."
The device will be worn in a vest, or strapped to the player's back.
The NRL, where the collisions are more violent, and the appeal to viewers potentially greater, has not given permission for GPS to be used in games, fearing injury when a player is back-slammed, or falls heavily.
Manly and Melbourne, leaders on the premiership ladder and in technology, have been using GPS technology as a training aid to track loads and determine whether injured players are fit to resume.
Manly monitor every training session and get instant data on total workload, exertion, impacts, sprint efforts, heart rates, acceleration, speed and distance.
Coach Des Hasler says, "I've been using it for years. It's a great thing for injury prevention and telling us how far we need to run at training."
Geelong credit their top of the AFL ladder position on changes in training brought by a former Manly assistant, Dean Robinson.
Robinson has used GPS technology and strength training to make the Cats stronger in the upper body.
The improved strength of Geelong players in the shoulders and arms has manifested itself in better tackling and ball control.
Other AFL teams reporting dramatic improvement since using GPS data include Sydney, Adelaide and West Coast.
The Canterbury Crusaders, who have dominated Super 14 rugby, the All Blacks and A-League football champions Melbourne Victory all use GPS technology.
The GPS devices worn in the Collingwood-Brisbane match update data 100 times a second.
Channel Ten will be able to analyse player match-ups on rolling time periods and provide explanations for interchange.
The laws of physics suggest that with players getting bigger and faster, impacts are even more devastating. Old footballers contend this is no more valid than the notion greater amps automatically lead to better songs.
Former players argue they don't make hits like they used to but GPS technology means we now have a Richter scale for comparison.
One of AFL's most absorbing match-ups occurred in a Collingwood-Brisbane game when Magpies captain Nathan Buckley and Lions skipper Michael Voss went at each other furiously in the final quarter of the 2002 grand final.
While some fans might argue viewing the statistics of that battle would suck all the romance from it, Barham recognises we live in an information age and viewers demand detail, even if they choose to discard it.
In football, as in music, hits succeed because of the impression they leave.
Fans now have a means to measure them and coaches have tangible evidence of what they suspect when they say, "That game took a lot out of the lads." League HQ

Iestyn Harris eager to secure Wembley return - Ian Laybourn A trio of Bradford players are hoping for a touch of symmetry when the Bulls take on holders St Helens on Saturday for a place in the Carnegie Challenge Cup final.
Iestyn Harris, Terry Newton and Marcus St Hilaire were all in the Leeds team that beat London Broncos in the last final to be staged at the old Wembley in 1999 and have eyes on a return to the new national stadium when the Bulls meet Saints in the first semi-final at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium.
Harris, who captained the Rhinos to a 52-16 victory over the Londoners eight years ago, admits the Cup final's eagerly-awaited return to its home for 70 years has provided an additional incentive to reach the August 25 showpiece.
"To be the last player to lift the trophy at the old Wembley is something special and something you'll remember forever and to be one game away from becoming the first team to go to the new Wembley is equally special," he said.
"The Cup has been on the road for the last few years and to actually get back to its roots is special.
"The fact that it's back at Wembley is a major incentive and something all the players have certainly been talking about for a while.
"But, when it comes to these type of games, you've really got to put everything like that to one side and concentrate on the 80 minutes.
"St Helens are an amazing side and, if we're not fully on our game, we're not going to get there."
Harris concedes that the Bulls players may have had the semi-final on their minds last weekend when they suffered a shock 14-10 League defeat by bottom club Salford.
But he has no doubt they will be fully focused on their bid to clinch the club's first Challenge Cup final appearance for four years.
"Sub-consciously we may have had an eye on this game," he said. "Obviously it was a disappointing result and a disappointing performance at Salford.
"We didn't perform. But we've not put two of those performances together this year so hopefully that will be the case this week.
"It's a huge hurdle but there's a big prize at the end of it so we'll be throwing everything we've got against Saints."
The Bulls have lost their last five Challenge Cup meetings against Saints, including the finals of 1996, 1997 and 2001, but they will be encouraged by their 10-4 league win over the champions a fortnight ago.
"It's difficult to take a lot out of that match," said Harris. "The weather was horrendous and the skill levels were low on the day but physically I thought we stood up to them really well.
"They may have that in the back of their minds which will hopefully be a psychological edge for us. If the weather is good, we can show our skill as well as them."
Harris, who made his comeback from a torn hamstring against the Reds, admitted he had a below-par performance at The Willows but is confident he will be close to his best at the Galpharm Stadium.
"I've never experienced a hamstring injury like that before," he said. "It was more on the mental side, having confidence in your hamstring again.
"It was also a really heavy pitch, so it couldn't have been worse. It was good to get 80 minutes, although the result didn't go our way.
"I can now have some confidence going into this game and really try and get firing early in the game." Sporting Life

MACKAY WELCOMES WIZARD RETURN Mackay and District Rugby League Chairman Greg Sutherland says hosting this Saturday's Wizard Cup blockbuster between likely finalists North Queensland and Ipswich will set the 'standard' for the city's submission to the 2008 competition.
Sutherland confirmed this week that Mackay would join Cairns in applying for next year's Wizard Cup, with an application to go before QRL Northern Division on August 25.
Mackay last competed in the competition in its inaugural year, 1996, with the Sea Eagles finishing twelfth in a 16-team league. The Sea Eagles also hold the honour of scoring the first-ever points in the Wizard Cup - a try by Ray Gagai on March 30, 1996.
A successful application for re-entry would do Mackay and neighbouring regions justice, being the breeding ground for numerous State of Origin players from current Maroon Neville Costigan back to the likes of Paul Bowman, Kevin Campion, Travis Norton, Wendell Sailor, Martin Bella and Dale Shearer.
"We've been going about our business quietly, but working very hard talking to sponsors, players, the North Queensland Cowboys and local organisations about next year," Sutherland revealed.
"The advantage we have over a lot of places is that we can combine a great coastal lifestyle with a booming economy and fantastic job prospects.
"We're keen to come back into the Wizard Cup and this weekend's game will give us a close look at the standard required."
The MDRL has gone to significant lengths to highlight the match between the Young Guns and Jets - a crunch battle between second and third on the table. As well as local media promotions, organisers have sold corporate tents and invited a bevy of junior teams for the 4.30pm match at Tiger Park, home of Mackay Wests.
Among those set to play for the Young Guns is Queensland State of Origin flyer Ty Williams, confirmed today as a starter in the match.
"It's great that the Young Guns and Cowboys continue to take these types of games to rural areas. It gives provincial people an up-close opportunity to see the quality that the Wizard Cup provides," QRL Managing Director Ross Livermore said.
"Let's hope if their application for next year is successful, they'll get this standard of game every second week.
"You have to remember this goes beyond football, but also towards what it does for the local economy and sense of community."
The steering committee of the Mackay submission has made no secret of the fact they are tying the Wizard Cup application to the city's desire for a new rectangular stadium.
North Queensland football manager Kelly Egan said in recent years the Cowboys and Young Guns had taken more than 30 games, both fixtures and trials, away from Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Earlier this season the Young Guns staged a trial in Moranbah, while full-blooded fixture matches have been held in recent seasons at both Proserpine and Sarina.
"The people in Mackay should see a top-notch game. Not only are the Wizard Cup finals on the horizon, but the squeeze is on for the NRL top eight and that means hot competition between our players," Egan said.
"Ipswich beat our boys by a field goal earlier in the year and we also lost top spot last week, so we're certainly out for a big performance."
The game is one of four Wizard Cup matches this weekend with a major bearing on the finals make-up.

Taylor is freakish: Petero by Wayne Heming Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett may not want to give him a rap but the game's best prop Petero Civoniceva says teenage forward giant Dave Taylor is "freakish".
One of Civoniceva's many regrets about leaving the Broncos at the end of the season will be not sharing in the 19-year-old player's development, which he expects to take off in 2008.
Taylor, who scored his maiden NRL try earlier this month against Gold Coast, turned in a performance off the bench against Parramatta on Monday night which left Civoniceva in no doubt about his potential.
"Freakish is the word that comes to mind,'' said Civoniceva of Taylor's 33-minute onslaught which included a try assist, two line breaks, 23 tackles and 132 precious metres in hit-ups.
Most starting front rowers would love to have those kind of stats every week.
"We've seen glimpses of his potential every time he gets on the field but the other night he was incredible,'' Civoniceva said.
"It's pretty scary to think he's just 19. He's got the football world at his size-16 feet."
Taylor, remarkably agile for a young man of 115kg, burst onto flat passes at high speed against the Eels, terrorising the defence several times in the second half.
Civoniceva, 31, has been carting the ball into the teeth of opposition defences for a decade at the highest level and knows what is required from a player.
"It takes a lot of courage,'' said the Queensland and Australia prop who has played 20 Origins and 29 Tests.
"It takes big hands as well, have you see the size of his hands? They're unbelievable.
"The size of him and the way he can move is just freakish. He's awfully skilful for a big guy and the most exciting thing will be to see how he develops over the few years.''
While Taylor has been heralded for his ball-playing ability, Civoniceva said the youngster could also do the tough stuff.
"Here's a big guy who can take the ball to the line. He's even got a kicking game as well which is unbelievable for a big guy,'' he said.
"The good thing about Dave is he's got a good head on his shoulders. He's down to earth.
"He's always the first guy who comes up to me in the sheds for a chat and we sometimes have coffee and talk about things. It's a good sign. He's not overawed.''
Originally from Blackwater in central Queensland, Taylor earned the wrath of his coach for displaying too much emotion when he scored his first try against the Titans.
Bennett declined to praise his outstanding effort against Parramatta but Civoniceva believes Bennett appreciates what Taylor offers.
"If Wayne didn't want him he wouldn't be in first grade this weekend,'' Civoniceva said.
"You don't want to be getting too many raps too quick when you're a young talent but I know quietly Wayne would be loving everything Dave's been doing. He's exciting.
"Next year he's the type of player you can build a pack around with Ben Hannant, Sam Thaiday.
"It all looks pretty rosy for the Broncos.''Foxsports

EASTS v BURLEIGH *Live on ABC TV Langlands Park, Saturday July 28, 2pm. Referee: Gavin MORRIS
EASTS has thrown open its gates to Brisbane Broncos season ticket-holders in a cheeky 'Catch Lockyer For Free' promotion. The Tigers are celebrating 100 games in the gold and black for Matt Lockyer, Australian skipper Darren's younger brother. Lockyer previously played 59 games for Souths Logan and is still the Magpies' leading scorer since the Wizard Cup began.
The U2-loving carpenter only needs two more points for 500 in the Wizard Cup. This week's match-up with Burleigh has a major bearing on the finals, with Burleigh needing to win all its remaining games and Easts one of the teams that could potentially drop from the top five.
Bears star five-eighth Adam Hayden has been named for a long-awaited return from a broken hand. Joe Galuvao has been selected by Easts, despite suffering an arm injury and playing limited minutes last week. ABC TV ratings for the Wizard Cup are up 20% on 2006.
NORTHS v SOUTHS LOGAN Bishop Park, Saturday July 28, 3pm. Referee: Justin EASTWOOD
SOUTHS Logan will be looking to finish ahead of Norths for the first time since 1996 by repeating their Round 8 defeat of the Devils. With four weeks remaining, Norths is on 13 competition points, while Souths Logan is on 12 points.
However the Magpies will need at least two wins before the end of the season to catch their rivals, given the Devils have a guaranteed two points with the bye in the final round. In the first sign of the new sister-club arrangement between Souths and Western Districts, Panthers Colts captain Liam McDonald is primed to make his Wizard Cup debut for the black-and-whites.
The lowest number of wins in a season by a Norths team since the Wizard Cup began is eight. Currently the Devils are sitting on five in 2007. Marc Brentnall needs eight games for a century with Norths.
NORTH QLD v IPSWICH Tiger Park, Mackay, Saturday July 28, 4.30pm Referee: Michael WISE
MACKAY and District Rugby League Chairman Greg Sutherland says hosting this Saturday's Wizard Cup blockbuster between likely finalists North Queensland and Ipswich will set the 'standard' for the city's submission to the 2008 competition. Sutherland confirmed this week that Mackay would join Cairns in applying for next year's Wizard Cup, with an application to go before QRL Northern Division on August 25.

State of Origin winger Ty Williams will be the star attraction in this weekend's battle between second and third. In recent years the North Queensland club has taken more than 30 fixture and trial games outside of Thuringowa
REDCLIFFE v WYNNUM MANLY Dolphin Oval, Sunday July 29, 3pm Referee: Justin DAVIS
WYNNUM Manly must defeat Redcliffe by more than 14 points this Sunday, or else face handing the Dolphins their 20th successive Herald Cup. Contested between the two teams since 1979, the Cup ensures clashes between the two Bayside clubs are always fiercely fought, no matter the circumstance.
It is sponsored by long-time grassroots rugby league supporter Quest Community Newspapers, which lists the Redcliffe and Bayside Herald and the Wynnum Herald among its catalogue of 19 publications.
The silverware is decided by accumulating the total number of points scored by each club against the other over the course of a season. In the first installment this year, the Dolphins downed the Seagulls 24-10 at BMD Kougari Oval way back on May 5. However, Wynnum Manly toppled pacesetter North Queensland 28-16 last weekend and defeated Redcliffe 40-18 on the peninsula last year.
TWEED HEADS v ASPLEY Piggabeen Complex, Sunday July 29, 3pm Referee: Clayton SHARPE
THE loser of this match will face an almighty battle to break back into the top five, with seven teams trying to cram into the finals. Tweed Heads holds fifth at present, but is only separated from sixth-placed Aspley by 21 points on for-and-against.
In personal milestones, Tweed backrower Selasi Berdie will bring up 50 Wizard Cup games. Born in Melbourne of Ghanian parents, Berdie was Players' Player against Redcliffe last week.
Teammate Brad Davis requires just nine points to become the first Seagull past the 400-point mark in the history of the Cup.
Forward Chris Enahoro can feel unlucky his name hasn't been raised for consideration by the Gold Coast Titans, having a whale of a year. Aspley hooker Nathan Strudwick was a 2006 Australian Schoolboys teammate of Tweed winger Shannon Walker. QRL

First club sponsor for the Toyota Cup named The NRL today welcomed the naming of the first club sponsor for the Toyota Cup and said that the move underlined both the importance of the competition in showcasing young talent and also its emphasis on building young careers on and off the field.
The Panthers today announced a two-year sponsorship deal with Teach NSW to support their under 20s team in next season's inaugural Toyota Cup.
The sponsorship deal aims to attract people of all ages to teaching careers, especially male primary teachers, and is groundbreaking in that it already has 24 emerging Toyota Cup players from Penrith employed as teachers aides.
"This is a significant partnership, not just for the Panthers but for the status of the under 20s competition," NRL Chief Executive David Gallop said today.
"The Toyota Cup is an exciting development in our game and it is encouraging to see that Penrith has been able to use this competition to establish a partnership that will not only benefit their club but the local community as well."
Toyota Cup Manager Michael Buettner also welcomed the sponsorship deal.
"Congratulations to the Panthers for securing a sponsorship deal of this magnitude," Mr Buettner said today.
"I think it reflects the excitement surrounding this new competition.
"The under 20s is going to attract a lot of interest as it showcases the future stars of our game, and the Panthers' professional approach to this competition recognises that.
"This partnership continues the tremendous work the Penrith club has done with its Panthers On the Prowl Program. It will not only benefit the community but the young players at the club who have acted as teachers aides." NRL Online Click for Latest News

New Zealand coach 'Bluey' McClennan

.......and of their strategy, allows the coach to understand what a player thinks of the game; developing this relationship will reinforce the direction the team wants to take.
For example, one directive taken by the side was 'bully the bully'. This sets the mindset within the team that they refuse to settle for anything. By adopting this theme to their game, the team had a goal at all times; they were going to remain in control.
Following communication, comes the game plan. Unfortunately, with limited time, the best thing to do is keep it simple, and play the game that suits your team. Ultimately, this means capitalising on your strengths and effectively using your key players; your halves combination, the fullback and the hooker.
Essentially, the play makers need to be comfortable and be able to communicate with each other to allow the other players to fit around them. McLennan affirms that the role of these players is necessary for success.
"You've got to promote them and [give them] ownership to do things. We'll try the fullback behind the hooker to tip him when there's good times to run, when there's lazy markers. [The] halfback should be constantly talking to the hooker." McLennan says.
The pivotal roles of the halves should also be ready to lead in defence. While your A, B and C defenders can also claim responsibility over defence, the halves have to be ready to call the shots if necessary. If the opposition halves are coming in to set up, then the halves must be out on the edges in defence.
Inevitably, how much time a team has to devote to their defence and attack stands to how much time they have for preparation. While the defence has to prevent the opposition from scoring tries, the attack has to cross the line to score points of their own.
Whether kicking high or passing before the line; pressure needs to be applied at all times, especially when working plays four and five. McLennan stresses the importance of remaining in control.
"Plays four and five are what turn a good set into a great set. Anything that applies pressure is how you've got to work plays four and five."
Again, playing to the strengths of the team when in a position where there is time constraints is the only solution. When there is no time to implement and develop new ideas, keep it simple.
"We're a side that doesn't kick long. It's really important for us to get to the 50m line [so] we can get a chance to apply some pressure ourselves. We work really hard on plays one, two and three."
The effort made to get yardage must be paramount. If a long kicking game does not suit the style of the game, then metres must be claimed. The New Zealand side focused on getting authority early in their sets, and getting players to...........
