The experienced Bulldogs showed patience

By Gary Roberts RLCM

The Bulldogs showed on Friday night at Carrara, before a crowd of 15,873, that by having patience and controlling an opposition's go forward, results can come your way.

Early in the game, it was noted that the Titans were struggling to achieve positive field position under their own ability.

On the other hand, the Bulldogs were gaining the ascendancy by repeatedly completing their sets with positive plays.

So, at half time, with the score being Bulldogs 24 Titans 6, the game was safely in the Sydneysider's keeping.

Where was the game won by the Bulldogs?

They had the ball on 19 occasions in the first half and completed 19 sets positively and on 14 of those occasions they finished at the Titans' end of the field.

Whereas the Titans had the ball on 18 occasions and finished in the Bulldogs' end of the field on eight occasions.

However, how the Titans got down there was vastly different from how the Bulldogs achieved their field position.

The eight times the Titans had the ball in the Bulldogs' half were not all achieved by positive plays on their part.

They had three restarts in the Bulldogs' half from penalties received in their half in the previous set.

Two were from Ian Donnelly's offloads in the Titans' half.

Another came from a smart Hilder offload, which almost resulted in a try and another when from a 20m restart, they reached the opposition 30m.

The other was from a Bulldogs' line drop out only to have the ball intercepted after a repeat set in the Bulldogs' red zone.

What does all that mean?

On Friday night's performance, it shows that the Titans have a problem with positive go forward from their own half.

In past weeks, with other players in the team, they were prepared to play with risk in their own half and with the finishers they had, it did show results.

But it was not there on Friday night.

For the Titans, what was witnessed on Friday night is for all opposing NRL teams to analyse and without their best players on the park, the rest of 2007 could be dim.

The Titans' future games are:

Rabbitohs
Wests Tigers
Warriors
Roosters
Sharks
Storm

To summarise:

The Bulldogs were aware that the Titans were down on personnel.

They played the patience game and without a superior opposition in defence or attack were able to play down the other end of the field.

They controlled the Titans and they waited for opportunities and Titan errors to come their way.

The Titans did make errors, some resulting from dumb plays that gave the Bulldogs good field position to create try line raids.

The score at half time was 24 - 6 and by this time, the style that both teams were playing indicated that the two NRL premiership points would go to the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs accepted the two points but due to the Titans' injury problems, they will not get carried away with their win.

Rabbitohs 20 defeated North Queensland 14 South Sydney produced a spirited defensive effort to fend off North Queensland's late advances and clinch a thrilling 20-14 victory at Telstra Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Rabbitohs centre Nigel Vagana produced the telling play with little more than a minute left on the clock when he jarred the ball loose in a tackle to force a North Queensland turnover.

Winger Fetuli Talanao then saw out the contest after the full-time siren had sounded when he pounced on a last-gasp Matthew Bowen kick to ensure victory and breathe life into the Rabbitohs' season.

Determined not to let another winning opportunity slip past them after falling short in Parramatta last Sunday, the Rabbitohs youngsters laid the platform for the victory with exciting trio Eddie Paea, Isaac Luke and Ben Rogers all scoring tries for the hosts.

Nathan Merritt added two conversions and two penalty goals, his last two-pointer putting the Rabbitohs out by a converted try with just five minutes remaining.

The Cowboys pressed hard in the final stages in search of the six points required to force the match into golden point extra-time but they were let down by a wayward Johnathan Thurston pass in a strong attacking position.

North Queensland's final opportunity was thwarted by Vagana's courageous effort, the visitors' numerous attempts to add to their three tries from Ashley Graham, Bowen and Scott Minto ultimately proving to be futile.

The six-point result lifts the Rabbitohs into ninth position and just one win outside the top eight, while the Cowboys can hold on to fourth spot if the Eels defeat the Broncos on Monday night.

Wally Lewis's waiting game - Helen Tsitouris Once known for his clever tactics and fast moves, rugby league legend Wally Lewis is now enduring a sit-and-wait game as he slowly recovers from brain surgery.

His sons Lincoln and Mitchell spoke exclusively to The Sunday Mail about their father's quiet courage as he struggles to regain his health.

Lewis, 47, had a 5cm by 3cm piece of his brain removed in a 3½-hour operation at Melbourne's Austin hospital in February following two epileptic seizures while presenting Brisbane's sports news on Channel 9 last year.

His post-op days are mostly spent watching television, his sons said, as specialists have told "The King" to restrict activity while his progress is monitored.

Lincoln, 19, said the specialists had not given any indication of how long it would be before the former Australian captain could return to a normal life.

"The timeline depends on Dad and the doctors. There's no certainties about anything," he said. "The thing Dad misses most is driving the car and playing golf. It will be a fair while until he'll be able to do that again.

"He's anxiously waiting until the day he can pick up the old nine iron again."

Mitchell, 21, said his father was just following doctor's orders. His painstakingly slow recovery includes visits to see a specialist in Melbourne.

Lincoln said his father had not managed to go to a Broncos or Origin game, which "I know he'd love to".

"Right now, the doctors think it's best if he keeps out of the limelight," he said.

Wally is regarded by many as the greatest rugby league player ever. Even today, he continues to touch a lot of Queenslanders' lives.

"The support is overwhelming. A lot of his old mates are calling him up and seeing how he is doing," said Lincoln.

"He's got a few close friends drop in to say 'hi'. It's really good. Dad can't thank anyone enough for all the support that's been coming his way and neither can we."

Lincoln, an actor on Home and Away, said their father had never pressured them to play football. "He's always been Dad to us. We're so proud of him and he's always been there supporting us and we will always support him."

Lewis does not speak to most media about his health but recently told Nine News: "It's a roundabout at the moment. I haven't quite made it to the corner. I probably put it: one step forward, 20 back.

"There's been a couple of problem nights and days, I suppose you get that, just like a tough football game." He said his confidence had taken a battering and his memory had been another casualty.  Sunday Mail

Tackling Communication with Peter Corcoran

Written by Vanessa Arthur

"I'm a good coach. My team is leading the competition and we are in a strong position to take out the premiership."

Sound familiar? A coach haphazardly presumes that because his team is posting victories, he is excelling as a coach.

Occasionally, this may be so, but in some cases the coach of any losing side may be just as good a coach as his opposition counterpart.

It can not simply be deduced that because a team is at the top of the competition ladder, the coach is automatically skilled coach.

A stand-out coach must be an excellent communicator who holds a strong knowledge of himself, his players and of the game itself.

There is constant evaluation of performance to eliminate all identifiable faults.

According to Peter Corcoran, ARL Development, the latter is what breeds 'good' coaching: "If relative perfection is not what we are about, then why are we coaching?"

Speaking at an ARL Level Three Rugby League Coaching Course at the New South Wales Academy of Sport, Corcoran was amazed at how little thought some coaches gave to analysing their own performance.

In his opinion, performance evaluation is imperative in raising the ability of a coach.

This leads to the first stage of the self-reflection process - keeping a diary. Corcoran says this record book need not be a very detailed account of every single thing that occurs, but merely a skeletal outline of the day's pertinent events, such as the dropping of a player or injuries sustained.

Such data makes it possible for the particular coach to evaluate his effectiveness.

And because it is a permanent record, the information can be revisited time and time again. It also stands as a memory jogger and provides a benchmark against which a coach's performance can be measured.

"We spend a tremendous amount of time with videos, statistics, assistants and so on and we don't seem to give much thought to how we perform. That's a tremendous pity."

Given that clear, planned communication is a necessary basis of good coaching, Corcoran says coaches should constantly examine their performance in this area.

It may even be useful for coaches to devote an entire page of their diary to this topic each week.

Take for example the ensuing interpersonal qualities that a coach should endeavour to promote:

(a) Courtesy;
(b) Tact;
(c) Tolerance;
(d) Keep cool;
(e) Expressiveness;
(f) Constructive criticism;
(g) Sincerity; and
(h) Loyalty

A coach should use the knowledge of what coaches aspire to and, with the use of a self-reflection diary, note where they could improve - it may, for example, be that tolerance levels leave a lot to be desired.

Corcoran says that by detailing a problem area and determining an appropriate solution, a coach will have far greater chance of rectifying the situation.

"If you want to become the professional coach I sincerely hope you would all want to be, a performance evaluation diary will give you scope for problems to be detected and curbed before they develop into concerns."
