Strong interest already in NZ kiwi coach position - Peter Jessup Prospective Kiwis coaches have until July 27 to register interest, and six names are already in the selection hat.

District leagues have been told that expressions of interest close that day.

The convenor of selectors, Howie Tamati, said yesterday it would be unfair to name candidates.

But Wellington's Paul Bergman and former Canterbury coach Phil Prescott have made it clear they will apply and the other four are believed to include Duane Mann and Gary Kemble. Other possibles are Dean and Trevor Clark and Bernie Perenara.

Tamati said he and fellow coach-selectors Frank Endacott and Graham Lowe would consider the CVs in the meantime and interview candidates over the weekend of August 11-12.

A meeting was already arranged between the team selectors Tony Iro, Darrell Williams, Daryl Halligan and Tony Kemp and the new coach for August 15, Tamati said.

After that, he felt it was important for the new man to travel to Australia to meet players and start to establish a rapport.

"Interest has been very good, there are plenty of people who have good credentials," Tamati said of the role of replacing Brian McClennan.

"It is also good we have these expressions of interest, now we know who has ambitions to work for the New Zealand Rugby League, there are other jobs too in the longer term plan."

Marshall out of the running - Peter Jessup Kiwis star Benji Marshall is back in training with the Tigers but the club yesterday denied rumours that he would return against the Warriors this weekend.

Marshall still has to complete full contact work to test the shoulder repaired after surgery and is "no chance", Tigers coach Tim Sheens said.

Sheens gave the same reply about captain and fullback Brett Hodgson, who is also back training after suffering a cheek fracture, but the coach was hopeful of having both back the following weekend.

There is no progress with the contracts of either Hodgson - who has a year to go but is the subject of interest in England and will be granted a release if he wants it - or Kiwis centre Paul Whatuira, whose future hangs on Hodgson's decision, said Tigers football manager Alan Mair.

If the captain stays the Tigers cannot meet Whatuira's value given salary cap restrictions.

The centre has already toured the Canberra Raiders facilities and his manager says there is interest from rugby in both Australia and New Zealand.

The Tigers were beaten 34-4 by Manly last weekend but came through without injury and have named a similar 17, but with premier league stand-out Shannon Galant, 21, to make his debut at fullback.

The Warriors will field an unchanged 17 after demolishing the Dragons at home, a win that should give them lots of confidence as they go to Campbelltown in Sydney's far west, a ground where few visitors profit.

Tony Martin is available for selection after a rib injury and joins five other first-grade regulars in the Auckland Lions, which keeps pressure on the incumbents, said coach Ivan Cleary.

"The players who have missed out on NRL selection have been impressing for the Lions in premier league.

"We need to see that happening so we have the competition for spots that we're looking for."

Martin, Todd Byrne, Louis Anderson, Patrick Ah Van, Lance Hohaia and Corey Lawrie will play for the Lions.

Bennett picks Carroll as pivot - Dan Koch Brisbane halfback Michael Ennis is adamant the club is better prepared than ever to handle the loss of injured skipper Darren Lockyer.

And he suggested Tonie Carroll's shock selection at five-eighth will force opponents to drastically reassess their game plans.

While Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett surprised most with his selection to cover the loss of his "money man", the choice by his counterpart on the Gold Coast, John Cartwright, was far more predictable.

Regular five-eighth Josh Lewis moves to halfback to replace Scott Prince (sternum/clavicle) and Matt Hilder will start at pivot.

Speculation over who would fill the Broncos' No.6 jumper for the remainder of the season has been rife since Lockyer's knee buckled under him last Friday night. Fullback Karmichael Hunt, hooker Shaun Berrigan and versatile young forward Greg Eastwood, a five-eighth with the junior Kiwis two years ago, were thought to be the front-runners.

But Bennett opted to put Carroll, the game's premier hit man, in the role. Eastwood, considered the heir apparent to Carroll's crown, replaces Carroll at the back of the scrum.

"My approach won't be any different. I don't think it can be," Carroll said.

"I will be defending in the same position as I do normally, so that won't be any different. I am excited about the change and think it could be a bit of fun.

"It is a big responsibility, but I will have guys like Petero Civoniceva, Shaun Berrigan and Michael Ennis helping me out."

Brisbane has won just 16 of the 40 matches Lockyer has missed since he made his debut for the club as a teenager in 1995. And the choice of Carroll to fill the chief play-making position has done little to appease the bookies, who are questioning where the Broncos' points will come from without their great player.

Ennis, however, said he and Hunt were excited by the challenge of needing to take on greater responsibility for the team's attack.

And he claimed the presence of Eastwood and Carroll on either side of the ruck would force teams to re-assess their attacking plans, designed to target Lockyer in the defensive line.

"It's no secret that every team looks for Locky when they have the ball, trying to work him over and tire him out," Ennis said.

"He is always their target in the defensive line, but with Tonie Carroll sitting out there on that edge and Greg Eastwood on the other side, I think teams are going to want to come up with something different.

"They aren't guys you want to be running at all game, so that might end up working in our favour."

While Hunt and Ennis have been gradually increasing their involvement as playmakers this season, the former Newcastle rake conceded they would need to step up significantly if Brisbane was to maintain its place inside the top eight for the final seven rounds of the competition.

"K (Hunt) and I have been working on taking a lot of the pressure of organising the side off Locky and just letting him come in when he sees fit. So the basic structures won't change too much," Ennis said.

"The big challenge I guess will be taking over the fifth tackle options, where Locky is so good. K has been doing a bit, but we will have to share the load because you can't expect any one bloke to just come in and fill Darren Lockyer's boots. It's just not going to happen."

The same sentiments were being expressed on the Gold Coast for the Titans' crucial meeting with the Bulldogs on Friday night.

Along with Cowboys halfback Johnathan Thurston and Warriors fullback Wade Mackinnon, Prince has been one of the form players of the competition.

Meanwhile, powerful centre Ben Harris, a premiership winner alongside Mason and O'Meley at the Bulldogs in 2004, will return to Australia next season after agreeing to a one-year deal to join North Queensland in 2008.

Harris, 23, has spent the past three years with English Super League club Bradford and almost signed with the Queensland Reds before agreeing to join the Cowboys. The Australian

Freddie flexes his muscles - Andrew Webster Brad Fittler enjoyed the perfect start to his coaching career on Saturday night.

But just hours after plotting his side's 23-12 victory over Cronulla, the rookie coach decided "on the spot" to stand down premier league winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall and forward Frank-Paul Nuuausala for arriving late for a rehabilitation session.

Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan last night insisted that "alcohol wasn't a factor" in the pair being dropped. "They live together and just slept in," Canavan said. "The coach had no hesitation in standing them down from all football."

Neither played in the Roosters' win over the Sharks, but their demotion marked Fittler's first disciplinary action since being installed as caretaker-coach in place of Chris Anderson, who stood down a week ago for health reasons.

Fittler did have reason yesterday to show faith in other players for this Saturday's match against Newcastle at EnergyAustralia Stadium - in particular prop Lopini Paea, who will start for only the second time this season.

Paea repaid Fittler in spadefuls for the decision to move him into the starting side last Saturday and was named the players' player after a destructive performance.

"He's been one of our best forwards all season," Fittler said. "I don't know why he hasn't started. No idea. He was given his chance on Saturday night and made the most of it."

Paea is considered one of the Roosters' most gifted big men but has been typecast as a bench player for most of his career.

"It's good to be starting, man," he said. "It's better than sitting on the bench and coming in after everyone else has warmed up. But either way, I've still got the same job."

The 23-year-old was dealt a severe blow last year when he was handed a 10-week suspension for a dangerous throw on Melbourne's Ben Cross in June. Asked how much the sanction set him back, the deeply religious Paea said yesterday: "Heaps, man. You see similar incidents, you know?

"No-one goes out there to spear someone on the head. But then players deliberately throw punches and they get far less. I don't know how the system works. It was dangerous. I deserved to be suspended. But not for 10 weeks."

Fitter added: "He rebounded very well from that suspension - it knocked him around a lot. He leads a very healthy and kind life out of football. He didn't want to be labelled some sort of thug when he is the total opposite."

Meanwhile, winger Joel Monaghan, who scored his first hat-trick for the Roosters in the victory against Cronulla, is likely to decide on his future at Bondi Junction before the match against the Knights.

Monaghan is tipped to rejoin his first club, Canberra, although he is also being pursued by Wests Tigers, and the Roosters have not given up on re-signing him.

Monaghan said Fittler's appointment would not be a factor in whether he stayed. "He's a good coach, but there was stuff put in place before he took over," he said. "Hopefully, I'll do something in the next few days."

Cool hand Lewis can take heat - Luke Turgeon He is about to shift into the hottest seat on the Gold Coast, but Titans playmaker Josh Lewis has declared he is not feeling the heat.

The 21-year-old Lewis will take over skipper Scott Prince's No.7 jumper when the Titans collide with the Bulldogs at Gold Coast Stadium on Friday night, looking to steady the ship in the wake of their 56-10 flogging from Canberra at the weekend.

Lewis has performed well for the Gold Coast following a controversial mid-season transfer from the Sydney Roosters, but while he has so far been playing second fiddle to Prince, Gold Coast fans and his Titans teammates will now be looking to him to lead the attacking charge.

"We will simplify our game a bit more now that he (Prince) is gone," said Lewis yesterday.

"For me there will be a bit more responsibility but there also will be for the hookers and the five-eighth.

"I think everyone will have to pick it up a little bit.

"It will be up to me to get our forwards going and get my kicking game on and then we can turn their big fellas around.

"We just need to stick together."

It may come as a surprise to learn that Lewis has spent most of his career playing halfback and not five-eighth.

He was a halfback all through his junior days before making his NRL debut in the No.7 last year and going on to play 11 first grade games for the Roosters.

"I have played most of my footy there before, so I really don't mind playing seven," said Lewis. "Playing six has actually been something a bit different."

Prince aggravated his collarbone injury in the 47th minute of the Canberra's demolition of the Titans on Sunday and will be out for the next three weeks.

The team clearly missed Prince when he left the field, but Lewis is confident it won't be the same story against the Dogs.

"When he went off I think everyone put their heads down a little bit more, but we were already trailing by about 20-30 points when we lost him," said Lewis.

"We have pretty much forgotten about that now and we are concentrating on the Bulldogs."

Utility Matt Hilder will move from the back row into the pivot role, while Preston Campbell will remain at fullback but is expected to slot into the halves throughout the match.

New Zealand international winger Jake Webster and former Super 14 rugby centre Josh Graham have been recalled to the starting side to replace Matt Petersen (knee) and Luke O'Dwyer (shoulder) respectively.

Kiwi prop James Stosic is expected to make his return from a medial ligament tear and take his place on the bench. Gold Coast Bulletin

Ricky calls in 115kg bouncer - Dean Ritchie and Josh Massoud He usually spends Friday nights on the door of a western Sydney nightclub, but this week 115kg bouncer Eddie Su'a will be packing down for the Sharks.

An injury crisis yesterday prompted coach Ricky Stuart to call on the unknown giant to help get the Sharks' season back on track against Manly at Brookvale Oval.

A part-time footballer on a $5000-a-year contract, Su'a works six nights a week as a bouncer and once survived getting shot at work.

The sudden elevation of Su'a, 24, came on a day when NRL clubs across the board were struggling to fill their player rosters due to mounting injuries.

The Bulldogs also called in a park footballer yesterday - thrusting 27-year-old carpenter Fred Briggs into the side to tackle the Titans at Carrara on Friday night.

But Su'a's sudden rise to an NRL star is the most remarkable story.

The big Shark works the door at Mounties club and PJ Gallaghers in Parramatta, often not finishing until 3.30am.

"It's a hectic life, I don't know how I do it," Su'a told The Daily Telegraph.

"Not many players work and play these days but prayer gets me through and I take this as a blessing that I have achieved first grade.

"I am still living with my parents in Liverpool, it's a bit of a struggle but I have to keep disciplined and I know there are things I have to sacrifice."

As he reflected on his sudden rise to league fame yesterday, Su'a told of the night in 2002 a crazed patron shot him in the leg at Revesby Workers Club.

"A fight broke out on the dance floor and I went to break it up," Su'a said.

"He shot at me five times, one got me in the leg. It certainly put back my football plans."

Sharks coach Stuart is confident Su'a will cut it in the NRL big time. "He was a park footballer with Helensburgh and also played Premier League this year and I'm just asking him to come in and do himself proud with his performance," he said.

Briggs, the Bulldogs' new recruit, started the season on match payments with Jim Beam Cup side Sydney Bulls.

Currently working on a house in Matraville, the qualified carpenter has been given the rest of the week off to prepare for his NRL debut. "It's pretty quiet at work, so the boss has given me a bit of time off," Briggs said.

Two other players in Stuart's injury-hit Sharks squad for Friday night are also on humble contracts - Dayne Weston is on an annual $10,000-a-year deal while Henry Perenara signed for just $20,000 a season. Foxsports

The Newtown Rugby League Football Club notes with regret the passing of Brian "Sharkey" McGreal, a Newtown Bluebags first grade player from the late 1950's and early 1960's.

A tough, uncompromising front rower of the old school, "Sharkey" passed away on Saturday, 14th July at the age of 71.

He was a well-liked figure with players and supporters alike and was a regular at Newtown's annual club reunions over the years.

ARRIVA HELP BRING SKOLARS TO SCHOOL London Skolars are delighted to announce the renewal of their invaluable partnership with local transport company Arriva. The second year of the arrangement will see Arriva's sponsorship of Skolars' community rugby league projects reach £30,000, with that same amount contributed by Sportsmatch.

"Our support of the London Skolars and the great work that they do gives us a valuable link with the local community and helps to build positive relationships with the people that are using our services," said Dave Jones, Commercial Support Manager for Arriva London.

Arriva have helped fund projects that have seen Skolars community coaches deliver rugby league to both primary and secondary schools in north London - the Arriva/Sportsmatch Primary to Secondary Progression Programme - which ensures that the rugby league skills children learn in primary school are not wasted when they progress at 11 to secondary school, as has happened in the past.

"The programme's aim is to use rugby league to increase participation in sport in north London by targeting years 7 and 8, boys and girls," explains London Skolars business manager Tryfan Edwards.

"Previous schemes have targeted local primary schools but we're now trying to help curb the drop-out rate in sports participation in those year groups. Our experience, dynamic coaches use skills which can be transferred to and from other sports and they should get the kids interested in rugby league and hopefully we'll see them join our after-school clubs and become part of the London Skolars family.

"Arriva and the Skolars are committed to the local community in North London and we realize it's this audience that will ensure that both companies prosper in future, which is why it's so important to invest in the local community and local youth."

The Arriva/Sportsmatch Primary to Secondary Progression Programme will also incorporate after-school clubs, teacher support/coach education programmes, and a competition between participating schools. Almost 3000 children should be exposed to rugby league and experience six weeks of coaching.

Fortismere
Gladesmore
Greig City Academy
Highgate Wood
Hornsey School for Girls
John Loughborough

Sean Long is set to return St Helens scrum-half Sean Long is set to return from a calf injury in Friday's Super League game with Wigan.

Long has only played once since being injured in Saints' win over Wigan in May but is keen to return before the Challenge Cup semi-final with Bradford.

"I'm pushing for Longy to play this week," said coach Daniel Anderson.

"He's played only one in 10 so it's about him getting a feel. It's been frustrating for him, the physio and me, the length of time he's been out."

Australian back-row forward Chris Flannery is also in line to make his debut, in place of the injured Lee Gilmour.

"Chris Flannery is in the mix," said Anderson.

"If he's fit and ready to play, he'll play. He'll take someone's spot."

Wigan approach the game having had consecutive wins over Leeds and Bradford, two of the three teams above them in the table.

Rochdale Hornets appoint Shaun Gartland as coach Rochdale Hornets have appointed Shaun Gartland as their new coach after withdrawing an offer to former St Helens and Great Britain scrum-half Bobbie Goulding.

Goulding was set to return to Spotland for a second spell after being offered the chance to succeed Darren Abram, who was sacked a week ago with Hornets second from bottom of National League One and facing the threat of relegation.

But the club's board performed an about-turn on Tuesday after Goulding declined to accept the conditions attached to the offer.

"An offer was made subject to certain conditions in view of what happened last time but Bobbie came back to us with another set of proposals which were unacceptable to us so the offer was withdrawn," said chairman David Vining.

Gartland, who worked under Abram and coached the club's newly-formed under-21 team, will now be in charge for the rest of the season, starting with Thursday's televised home game against Dewsbury, and will be assisted by Gareth Pratt.

"Shaun has been loyal to the club and deserves a chance," added Vining. "The appointments are to the end of the season when we will review everything."

The much-travelled Goulding was twice nominated for National League coach of the year during his previous spell with the Lancashire club but resigned in November 2005, citing frustration with the club's financial difficulties. Sporting Life

Wolves offload players to keep Kevin Penny - Dave Hadfield Warrington are to shed at least two players this week as they step up efforts to keep their brightest young star. The Wolves are hoping to announce that Kevin Penny has agreed an enhanced contract. The 19-year-old winger has scored nine tries in his first six Super League starts, including a hat-trick against Salford on Sunday.

That has raised fears that he could become a target for other clubs and in particular from rugby union.

Penny's rapid emergence has made it likely that Warrington will release another winger, Richie Barnett, this week to join Salford.

The Willows are also a likely destination for the forward Michael Wainwright, although Widnes could emerge as rivals. Wainwright has been told there will be no contract for next season and it now appears he can go immediately.

Another Warrington player, Michael Sullivan, was due to be announced this week as a signing for the Australian club Canterbury, but he broke his arm against Salford, throwing the deal into doubt.

Wakefield could be without two props for Friday night's game at Leeds, subject to a disciplinary hearing tonight. Danny Sculthorpe has been charged with a suspected high tackle after being placed on report at Huddersfield, while Adam Watene has been called to answer a charge of using a dangerous throw.

St Helens' Jon Wilkin also faces a high-tackle charge after being sent off at Bradford. A one-match ban will put him out of the derby against Wigan this Friday, while a two-match ban will rule him out of the Challenge Cup semi-final against the Bulls the following week.

Saints' coach, Daniel Anderson, is still waiting to hear whether he will face charges over his outburst at Odsal, when he complained of "inept officiating".

Clock ticking for Salford - Neil Barker Two successive crushing defeats for the Salford City Reds means the honeymoon period is definitely over for new Aussie coach Shaun McRae.

The big fellow may have raised hopes by getting off to a winning start, but on this and last week's evidence, relegation appears a realistic threat.

With only eight games now left, it is not looking good for Salford, who were completely swept aside by a second half hat-trick of tries from Wolves' flying winger Kevin Penny.

Three points now separate struggling Salford from Hull KR, who were surprise weekend winners in France over Catalans.

Salford players supposedly had a point to prove yesterday, according to football director Steve Simms, but they offered little and McRae clearly has plenty on his plate if he is to keep the club in Super League.

Many fans vented their displeasure, yet McRae refuses to panic. The table, however, does not lie and it's obvious Reds need inspiration from somewhere fast.

McRae said: "I was very disappointed with the performance. We worked hard to rectify the errors we had made last week but we were again unable to cope with the conditions and were well beaten.

"We need to turn things around but the issue of relegation doesn't concern me yet. There is enough pressure on the players. We paid the price because we were never able to build any pressure.

"At times, we were a little indisciplined around the ruck. When we meet Warrington on the last day of the season, I would like to think we have improved significantly."

To compound Salford's misery, forwards Ian Sibbit and Mark Edmondson picked up injuries. Manchester Evening Post

Taylor and Hagan trade barbs - Stuart Honeysett Michael Hagan has questioned the credentials of Jason Taylor to criticise his coaching record at Newcastle as the feud between the pair continued yesterday.

Hagan's defence of his time at the Knights came as the NRL spared the two warring coaches a fine for breaching the game's code of conduct following their ugly exchange on Sunday afternoon.

South Sydney's Taylor and Parramatta's Hagan traded barbs over everything from pre-game warm-ups to coaching records following the Eels' 18-12 win over the Rabbitiohs at Parramatta Stadium.

Taylor declined an offer yesterday to talk about his role in the incident, which included yelling at Hagan on his way to Sunday's post-match media conference, "(Knights coach) Brian Smith is re-building what you f***ed up in Newcastle."

Hagan, a columnist for The Weekend Australian who spent six years at the Knights including a premiership win in 2001, said he was comfortable with the state he left the club in.

"JT is probably not qualified to make comment on what may have occurred up there anyway," Hagan said.

"I left the club on good terms and in pretty good shape if you think about the team having finished in the top four (last year). And Jersey Flegg made the grand final and a number of those young players are now playing first grade."

Hagan, who beat former Parramatta assistant coach Taylor for the top job at the Eels when he was appointed at the end of 2005, also expanded on the verbal stoush during a pre-arranged interview on Sydney radio 2KY yesterday morning.

It has been widely reported Taylor was miffed because his team could not share the same field as the Eels for the pre-match warm-up session.

"I thought better of that (sharing) and that's where it all came from, which was disappointing but that's one of the things that can happen in our game," Hagan said.

"He was obviously upset and no-one likes to get beat and I didn't feel great on Monday night after the (Newcastle) game either.

"But sometimes you've got to deal with it a bit differently.

"He was pretty aggressive in the first instance and it escalated from there."

Hagan said the conversation was meant to be private and he had never been involved in an exchange like that in seven years of coaching first grade.

"In the end you offer your hand to congratulate the other coach or commiserate with them and that's basically what I intended to do after the game but it went a bit pear-shaped after that," Hagan said.

The NRL reviewed the incident yesterday before determining there were several mitigating factors.

"Although this type of incident sets a bad example for junior coaches, given that it took place in the heat of the moment and in a non-public area, we don't propose to take any further action on this occasion," NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said.

EXTRACT FROM RLCM COACHTALK YEARBOOK 1

Peter Louis - North Sydney Coach

RLCM Yearbook first published 2000

".......week without visual stimuli. I honestly think that it must have been terribly hard for coaches in the old days when they had to do everything by memory. I just don't know how you could coach like that.

"Video sessions are also very important for the players too, because quite often they cannot see what they are doing wrong. You can tell them at training, but it will not hit home until they have either made a mistake in a game or seen footage of it on television.

From a coach's perspective, you don't want to make mistakes in a game at all, so it is best to nip it in the bud and solve it at training. Very often people are critical of players for certain things they do, but you have to remember that they can't pick themselves up out of their body and look at it from the sideline."

Leading by example is a term frequently used to describe team captains and, in many ways, that leadership can only be established and kept through a good education about the game.

Education need not come in a scholarly manner, but in a general understanding that encompasses all the facets needed to play football successfully.

The importance of a competent captain is evident in the team's ability to recover from setbacks, rapport with the referee, scoring decisions and ultimately the overall record of performance.

Louis argues there are four key elements that are important in all quality Rugby League players, but are further accentuated in captaincy contenders.

"I look specifically for good temperament, intelligence, personality and skills," reveals Louis.

"It is an idea I picked up from Ajax Amsterdam, the successful Dutch
soccer team, and it can be shortened to T.I.P.S. for easy memory.

"I think foremost your team captain should be well respected by the other players and he should understand the game well and display competency in his knowledge of the rules.

"He does not necessarily have to be the strongest or fastest or biggest or well-known player - he just has to be tactful and provide the team with direction."

In his own education concerning Rugby league, Louis admits he started behind the eight-ball by failing to establish a philosophy towards the style of coach he wanted to be.

While he admired men like Jack Gibson and John Monie for the innovation, authority and success associated with them, he did not deeply consider the individual characteristics of coaching psychology until after beginning his career at Woy Woy on the Central Coast of New South Wales.

"I was a reluctant coach when I started out and I think I didn't develop my philosophies as well as I would have liked," laments Louis.

"Eventually I began thinking about the mannerisms of coaches I played under and took ideas from them that emphasised areas like skill organisation, discipline and player respect.

"I was never an avid reader, but I followed my heart and tried to explore my own interests and anything that I could use in relation to Rugby League.

That was all a part of being who I am and not trying to pass myself off as someone else.

"I have always been of the opinion that supplying variation is the hardest thing to do in coaching. At Norths, we had the majority of our squad together for six years. Everyone has a threshold for boredom and......
