Old score to settle
Roy Masters
During an intense opposed session against a Queensland Residents' team at the Maroons' Sanctuary Cove training camp on Sunday, coach Mal Meninga signalled his tactics for Origin III tonight. And the news wasn't good for NSW.
Mercurial Matt Bowen, a late call-up for injured forward Jacob Lillyman, spent his time on the field exclusively at fullback, while the named custodian, Karmichael Hunt, ran as lock during their dry run.
NSW believe Bowen will come on as a dummy-half. And that means Queensland want to blow NSW off Suncorp Stadium with an edge-of-the-ruck attacking combination of halfback Johnathan Thurston, five-eighth Darren Lockyer, Hunt and Bowen.
They're also happy for hooker Cameron Smith to kick for the sideline. His left-footers are difficult for opposition wingers to anticipate. Translation: the Maroons want more than a 3-0 series victory. They want an embarrassing scoreline.
Bowen was drafted into the team partly to cover for leg injuries to centre Justin Hodges and Hunt, but mainly to add further sparkle to a twinkle-quick attack. In choosing a fullback to replace a back-rower, and with only two forwards on their bench, the Maroons are sending a clear message that they don't respect the NSW pack.
Before and during this series, the Blues have maintained they have a superior pack. Well boys, now is the time to prove it with a power game against a Queensland team of eight forwards.
Blues' players have been quoted in the media saying they plan to play an expansive game. That implies they were too conservative and risk-conscious in Origins I and II. But comments like these should be filed along with the diagonal-injury rule: if a player says he has a sore right shoulder, the problem is the big toe on his left foot.
It is unlikely the Blues will open up the game until they have established superiority in the forwards and gained momentum. Choosing Cronulla's Greg Bird at five-eighth and Paul Gallen at lock - hardly a potent attacking duo - is further evidence of NSW's intention to play a power game.
The Blues surely must send runners at Thurston and Lockyer to sap their attacking brilliance. The quartet of Hunt, Lockyer, Thurston and Bowen would terrorise any NSW forward stuck three places wide of the ruck. So unless these four mad monks of helter-skelter football are forced to do some tackling, the Blues won't be able to find the panic button, let alone push it.
Furthermore, NSW must kick to Bowen, not his two big wingers, Greg Inglis and Brent Tate, and monster the small fullback when he returns the ball.
There is an element of smirk and swagger about the Maroons. They obviously believe they don't need a third prop to rotate with Steve Price and Petero Civoniceva. Meninga is confident Shaun Berrigan and Hunt can fill in as lock. Asked whether Queensland fear any Blues player, one happy Maroon camper said: "No one." Meninga had the look of an anarchist at a riot as he cranked up the team on Sunday.
While the NSW press has turned on Blues' coach Graham Murray, Brisbane's media has had a ball with features on "Maroonwash" and stories of NSW players indulging in past glories. Forget the focus being on Queensland achieving their first 3-0 victory since 1995.
It's NSW's last 3-0 victory in 2000 that has preoccupied the Maroons, particularly the try celebrations at the third game in Sydney, when centre Ryan Girdler broke the point-scoring record for a single game and Bryan Fletcher pretended the ball was a hand grenade, lobbing it into the middle of the Blues, who all fell over. "This is an opportunity to get square," a Maroon assistant said.
When Meninga took over as coach, he didn't know Andrew Johns would retire so soon. And at the time, NSW held the key positions in the Australian team - including Danny Buderus at hooker and Anthony Minichiello at fullback.
Now, Queenslanders hold those positions. "Enjoy it," the Maroons were told this week. "It's payback time."

Number of UK clubs to explain possible cap infringements
A number of Super League clubs will be summoned to hearings to explain possible salary cap infringements this week.
Club accounts are audited independently on behalf of the RFL to check for compliance with the competition's rules and initial findings are expected on Friday.
It is understood some irregularities will be reported but there will be no punishments until hearings have taken place.
Clubs are permitted to spend no more than half their income, up to a maximum of £1.6million, on players' wages.
Punishments for breaches include substantial points deductions and fines.
Last year Wigan and Bradford were both deducted two points for overspending in 2005 and fined £50,000 and £25,000 (£15,000 of which was suspended for two years) respectively.
Hull and St Helens were fined for minor breaches while Castleford and Wakefield were sent written cautions. Hull, St Helens and Halifax also had points deducted in 2003.
The minimum points penalty has since been increased from two to four, with 12 points now the maximum.
From next year the salary cap will be calculated under a 'live' system, whereby the financial implications of any new signing will be assessed before he can be registered.
One of the criticisms of the present system is that clubs guilty of breaches cannot be punished until the following season. Sporting Life

Stop Those Injuries - Some Ideas on Pre-habilitation Training
Written by Doug King
The biggest killer to any team is the injury toll within that period crucial to the team performance on the point's board - in season.
This can be the make or break of the competition for the club and can also be disheartening for the team players as well.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a team of players who never get injured and are able to turn up each week for training and playing without any niggles that can distract them from the game?
Experience and research has identified that the most common injuries are within the lower extremities such as knees, ankles and hamstring/quadriceps. These are often directly related to activities carried out prior to the injury occurring.
Injuries in the game are not that easy to counteract, and if measures were put into place to do this, then possibly the thrill of watching the game would be taken away.
However, changing the training aspect of the game preparation is an area we can review and hopefully meet the coach's desire to have a fully fit team with the necessary skills and attributes to win the competition.
Broken into basic groups, the training session can be seen to consist of several activities.
These are:
1. Warm up activities designed to prepare the player's body for the ensuing session.
2. Agility drills designed to provide a game related quick dexterity movement activity over a short distance.
3. Power activities designed to provide explosive power training.
4. Games designed to provide a skill based training situation directly transferred to the game scenario.
5. Tackle/pad drills designed to condition the players to the bumps and rigors of tackling and contact within the game.
6. Opposed games designed to simulate the opposition against the teams moves and strategies.
7. Kick/catch drills designed to provide the continuous learned behaviour necessary within the game.
