State of Origin - Game 2 - Sydney June 13. RLCM's Keith Hookway talks with 'The Axe' Trevor Gillmeister Queensland assistant coach.
It's time for Plan B(lues)
Brad Walter and Robert Dillon
NSW are set to make significant on and off the field changes in a bid to halt Queensland's dominance of State of Origin, with former Blues greats to join the coaching and management team.
As reported by the Herald after the team for Origin II was named, NSW coach Graham Murray and a number of his players face the axe after being unable to prevent the Maroons on Wednesday from winning back-to-back series with their fourth consecutive victory since Game I last year.
Murray will see out the series, but at least four changes are planned for Origin III - the first time NSW have gone into a dead rubber with nothing other than pride to play for since 1995.
With five-eighth Braith Anasta yesterday undergoing surgery for a broken finger that limited his involvement in Wednesday night's 10-6 loss at Telstra Stadium, Newcastle rookie Jarrod Mullen is in line for a recall after debuting at halfback in Origin I.
The right side backline pair of Jamie Lyon and Matt King are under pressure to retain their positions, and the selectors are believed to be considering shifting King from the wing to the centres at Lyon's expense and bringing in Parramatta flyer Eric Grothe to mark up against Greg Inglis.
Other changes are expected to include the selection of Wests Tigers hooker Robbie Farah and Cronulla back-rower Paul Gallen, although whose spots they will take is not clear.
It is understood the selectors feel they should retain captain Danny Buderus but want to try Farah and he is likely to make his Origin debut from the bench.
The selectors were generally happy with the performance of the forwards but are looking to find a place for Gallen, one of the form players of the NRL.
Other players in contention for Origin III include St George Illawarra lock Ben Creagh and prop Jason Ryles, the Bulldogs pair of Mark O'Meley and Reni Maitua, Manly second-rower Anthony Watmough and Knights utility Kurt Gidley.
Should further changes be made, those under most pressure are believed to be forwards Nathan Hindmarsh, Andrew Ryan, Steve Simpson, Brent Kite, Brett White and Luke Bailey.
Buderus said yesterday that the criticism - and conjecture about his own representative future - was disappointing but inevitable after the Blues suffered successive series defeats for the first time in 18 years.
"A lot went into that game - emotion, pressure and also our performance," Buderus said. "We just couldn't get there and you know what's coming on the back of that, a lot of criticism and stuff.
"Queensland are going to be up for a clean sweep, so whether [the selectors] want to make wholesale changes is up to them. If they want to give someone a shot, a younger player, that's up to them. Until you play Origin people don't know how you're going to go."
Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens and Melbourne's Craig Bellamy have been mentioned as the most likely successors to Murray, but Knights mentor Brian Smith has another idea - Phil Gould and Andrew Johns.
"My suggestion is to get Gould back to coach them," Smith writes in today's Newcastle Herald. "He'll say no but tell him A Johns will do it with him and handle all the media and it may change his mind. If we really want to win it and bring back the theatre and entertainment, let's do what Queensland have done - involve people who embody winning at this level.
"Mal Meninga and his support team have lifted Queensland. With Gould and Johns at the helm, everything from team selection to passionate performance is guaranteed to bring the excellence needed to resurrect Origin footy."
Mark Bouris, the boss of the sponsor Wizard, has proposed that NSW involve some former Origin greats in similar roles to those held by Steve and Kevin Walters, Trevor Gillmeister, Mark Coyne and Bob Lindner with the Queensland team.
" You saw those guys run down on the field after the game as if they had just played and every player came up and hugged them and Mal. It was like a real camaraderie between management, coaching and players. We don't have that, and that is a difference.
"As Graham Murray said, everyone of our players is a champion, they all played their hearts out but I just think the X-factor is all of that infrastructure and support the Queenslanders have around them - the former Origin greats.
"It's not just about on the park, it's all the other things that go with it and in that area Queensland do a far better job.
"We need to have former players who can come in year after year to help the new inductees into the NSW side and build a State of Origin tradition. We need them to be a part of the camp, part of the management - not just come and shake a few hands and give them a talk.'

Time to make a big call, Ivan
Graham Lowe
It's with no great pride that I confess to being one of those blokes who went to school to eat my lunch.
I readily acknowledge that compared with me, Warriors coach Ivan Cleary is a rocket scientist of international standing.
But I did learn a few things growing up in Otahuhu that may have escaped Ivan in his younger years. For instance, this mathematical equation is still embedded in my brain:
(d) disobedience = (p) pain x the cane.
One of my few visits to the Otahuhu College stage was to receive six of the best for an indiscretion on the school rifle range.
Perhaps the biggest lesson I learned was one that Ivan may care to ponder as he contemplates the accumulating wreckage of a season that started so well, and promised so much.
It goes like this: If you always do what you always did, then you'll always get what you always got.
Now you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand where I'm coming from here.
For the past six rounds of NRL football we have seen the same old, same old from this Warriors outfit and sure enough, each week, they've been getting the same result and have progressively slipped down the ladder into equal last place.
No one sympathises with Cleary's plight more than me. Hell, I coached one mob that was so bad by the end of the season my pre-game team talks had descended to a single line: For God's sake, don't get hurt out there.
Coaches are naturally risk-averse, and from experience you have to be in a pretty bad space before you summon the courage to break the mould and do something different.
Looking up the rear ends of just about every other team in the competition may well lead Cleary to finally look for that something different.
The good news is, I don't think he has to look far.
Because over the past two weeks I have watched a guy who I believe is capable of giving the Warriors exactly what they have been missing for most of this season - flair and spark.
Loyal readers will know I have been banging on about halves with creativity and authority since someone let me loose on these pages.
No NRL team can be successful without a little, smart guy running them round the paddock.
Two weeks ago, against the Bulldogs' Premier League side, the Auckland Lions debuted a kid by the name of Kevin Locke, out of the Northcote club.
At 17, and a dead-set flyweight, he has already been identified by the Warriors as a potential NRL player, with his inclusion in the Allied Workforce elite development squad.
And he played fullback last year for the Junior Kiwis against the NSW Under-18 side.
Locke is small. But so is Preston Campbell.
He's inexperienced but hell, even the greatest players started as novices.
What's more important is that he is lightning fast, brave, instinctive and I believe ready to be given a crack at NRL football.
He's got all the flair Cleary is looking for.
So is he too young at 17?
Has anyone asked him whether he'd like a crack at NRL football?
Maybe, just maybe, the Warriors forwards would step up a gear with the challenge of looking after a tyro halfback behind them. I think back to a guy named Shane Varley, who reminds me so much of Locke.
Varley was like a mosquito; tiny by international standards, but lightning fast, courageous and with real sting. He never let a club, provincial or Kiwi side down.
Sure, Locke has made a number of mistakes in his two appearances for the Lions.
But I've seen enough to know he could be a superstar provided he doesn't get shackled in a system that might value size more than ability. Repeat after me Ivan: If you always do ...
The arm-wrestle against the Storm last Sunday was another shattering result for Cleary, who must be wondering when the mid-season drought will break. The Warriors certainly had opportunities to win the game, but again it was the skill of a little man, Cooper Cronk, which broke the deadlock.
There's no shortage of effort in the Warriors performances, indeed I thought the forwards produced one of their best displays of the year.
The Warriors programme doesn't seem to get any easier, with tomorrow's match against an improving Cronulla side.
They may well benefit from the intense physicality of the Sharks' Monday night game against the Dragons, when both sides seemed to be on a mission to destroy.
The Sharks have toughened up considerably this year under Ricky Stuart, and their forwards are quite intimidating. With Brett Kimmorley back from Origin duty, it will be a tough challenge for the Warriors, who now simply must get back on a winning streak.
The Auckland Lions showed tons of character last Sunday with a hard-fought victory against Manly at Mt Smart. Warriors squad member Aidan Kirk had his best outing of the year, and the young Lions forwards hammered their more experienced opposites for the full 80 minutes, with the tackling machine Scotty Jones a standout. They go into this weekend's encounter against Cronulla with renewed confidence.

INJURY CURTAIL RICHARD OWEN'S TOUR
An innocuous tackle during the First Test victory over the South Africa Rhinos on Saturday 9th June has curtailed BARLA Great Britain Lions & Wigan St Patricks Richard Owen's tour and has seen fly home for further treatment.
Richard Owen who had the honour of captaining the side in its opening tour victory over the Sables X111, was injured in the 30th minutes of the First Test. He tried to run off the injury but was forced to leave the field and have his left ankle iced up whilst on the sidelines. His injury didn't respond and he took no further part in the 30-12 win.
The injury didn't respond o treatment whilst the side were at the Sundown Ranch Lion Farm and he was taken to Rustenberg Private Hospital for treatment to the injury.
Yesterday (13th June ) on returning to the Hatfield District of Pretoria, Richard attended the High Performance Centre, University of Pretoria were he was examined by another specialist who confirmed he had severe ligament damage to his left ankle and advised him to see an Orthapedic Specialist at home to further assess his injury.
The ankle was strapped up and as his tour was curtailed arrangements were hastily made so that he could fly home for treatment to speed up his recovery time. He was conveyed to Johannesburg Airport were flight arrangements were hastily made for his return to the United Kingdom.
It was a devastating blow to the player who had only just battled back to fitness for the tour following an injury to his right ankle whilst representing BARLA in a Skanska Cup game earlier this year.
A gutted Richard Owen was devastated with the injury news but wanted to get home to speed up the recovery time, "I am absolutely gutted and devastated about the injury to my left ankle which came during our great First Test victory over the South Africa Rhinos last Saturday. It was an innocuous tackle and I got up to play the ball and tried running it off and playing on.
"I came off the field and iced it to try and get back on but it wasn't possible. I was hoping that rest and daily physio would it right for the Second Test this Saturday but it didn't respond.
"After seeing a second specialist at the High Performance Centre he diagnosed my injury problem and I thought it better to get home to speed up my recover for the forthcoming season.
"Up the point of the injury I had personally had a great tour with a great bunch of lads and management. I had the honour of captaining the side in the opening game of the tour against the Sables X111 and then playing the BARLA Great Britain Lions Test side. The squad bonded really quickly and it's the best team spirit I have been involved in.
"All the players have been great as well as the management team. The coaching staff has given everything and in the time I have learned new things. We have had some great sponsors for the tour and Ray Fleming one of the sponsors here with us has been fantastic.
"I am looking forward to seeing the next two results and it was a bit emotional as they left for the dressing rooms before Wednesday's game. I am sure they can win the Test Series with a second victor against the South Africa Rhinos on Saturday and I will be waiting for the results from the boys. The best of luck to them they have done the country proud."

Johnathon Thurston cleared of fracture
Johnathon Thurston has been cleared of a broken hand but the North Queensland skipper remains in doubt for Saturday night's NRL clash against Melbourne.
Thurston damaged his hand while masterminding Queensland's 10-6 State of Origin win over NSW at Telstra Stadium.
Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr confirmed scans had cleared Thurston of any fracture with a visit to the doctor tomorrow to determine his immediate playing future.
The Cowboys will be desperate to have their playmaker on deck against the table-topping Storm with North Queensland having lost both games that Thurston has missed so far this season.

Brisbane Broncos player Shaun Berrigan to join Hull FC
Hull FC have signed versatile Australia international Shaun Berrigan, 28, on a four-year deal from Brisbane Broncos.
Berrigan, who was man of the match in the 2006 NRL Grand Final, has won 12 Kangaroos caps and has made 12 State of Origin appearances for Queensland.
"I believe the club has a fantastic future," said Berrigan, who will arrive for the start of the 2008 season.
Hull boss Peter Sharp said: "He is an exceptional rugby league player and a tremendous acquisition for Hull FC."
Berrigan, who can play hooker or centre, is Hull's second overseas signing for next season, with fellow Australian Adam Dykes also heading to the KC Stadium.
Berrigan will help replace veteran hooker Richard Swain, who is retiring at the end of this season.
"I have had a fantastic career at the Broncos, winning Premierships, playing for Queensland and of course for Australia," said Berrigan, who has scored 74 NRL tries.
"I am really excited to be joining Hull FC and playing in the Super League and Challenge Cup."
Berrigan was part of the Queensland team which beat New South Wales 10-6 in Sydney on Wednesday to claim the 2007 State of Origin series.

Doncaster and Swinton have points deducted
The Rugby Football League have deducted points from two National League clubs which recently hit financial difficulties.
Doncaster Lakers, from National League One, and League Two outfit Swinton Lions, are the first clubs to fall foul of the League's clampdown and have both been docked six points after entering into a Company Voluntary Arrangement.
In a statement, the RFL said: "Following a board meeting, the RFL have announced that Doncaster Lakers and Swinton Lions have each been deducted six points for a breach of the RFL's insolvency rules, with immediate effect."
The deduction means Doncaster, who are hoping for new backers to save them from extinction, are now bottom of League One with just three points, three behind Sheffield Eagles.
Swinton, who are confident they have overcome their financial problems, drop from eighth to 10th in League Two and are virtually ruled out of the promotion race.

Blues keen to win 'dead rubber'
NSW selector Bob McCarthy has rubbished claims the Blues will look to the future and name an experimental line-up for next month's State of Origin dead rubber at Suncorp Stadium.
Speculation mounted on Thursday that Blues selectors would make wholesale changes for Origin III after Queensland wrapped up the series with their first-ever win at Telstra Stadium on Wednesday night.
But McCarthy said the Blues would not be handing out sky blue jumpers for the sake of it as NSW look to avoid their first whitewash since 1995.
"We don't want to get thrashed up there - we want to go up there and win the game," McCarthy said.
"We won't worry about speculation - we'll worry about the real thing.
"We want to win every game and game three will be no different."
With nothing but pride to play for at Suncorp Stadium on July 4, several Blues players are believed to be facing the representative chop.
Critics have argued that the Blues need to start planning for the future with Queensland set to be an Origin force for many years to come with nine players in Wednesday night's line-up aged 25 or younger.
But McCarthy argued that selectors had already showed that they had one eye on 2008.
"We've already blooded eight guys this series - how many more do they want us to blood?" McCarthy said.
"We were in the game until the last five minutes, I was pretty happy with the way they played.
"We're not even worried about it now - we'll worry about it in three weeks time."
The Blues have already had eight debutants this season - Jarryd Hayne, Jarrod Mullen, Anthony Tupou, Brett White in game one while Ryan Hoffman, Greg Bird and Brett Stewart all played Origin for the first time on Wednesday night.
Only on four occasions since 1995 have the Blues selectors blooded more rookies - 11 players in 1995 and 1999 and nine players in 2002 and 2004.
Each time they rebounded to win the series the following year.
Current internationals Jamie Lyon, Luke Bailey, Brent Kite, Nathan Hindmarsh and Matt King are the ones under the most pressure and all will need big games over the next two weeks to retain their spots.
"If they make changes, they make changes," Hindmarsh told reporters.
"I had an opportunity to redeem myself in game two and I did not do it like I wanted to.
"Life goes on."
The Blues will need to find a replacement for five-eighth Braith Anasta, who is set to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on Thursday on a fractured finger.
Blues skipper Danny Buderus will also be out to show more in attack with Wests Tigers rake Robbie Farah applying plenty of pressure for a call-up.
Buderus was one of NSW's best defenders but failed to make much of an impact with ball in hand, running for just 36 metres for the game.
He also failed to offer much play making support for halfback Brett Kimmorley, and with Anasta a passenger due to his first half hand injury, the Blues didn't ask too many questions of the Queensland defence.
Fullback Anthony Minichiello was also ruled out for up to four weeks, but stand-in Brett Stewart did more than enough to ensure he will be there for game three.
Murray to see out Origin series NSW officials say Graham Murray will see out the remainder of the Origin series but a decision on next season's coach will be delayed until the end of the year.
NRL move to prevent 'milking' penalties Players faking injury are less likely to win penalties for their sides after NRL officials modified rule interpretations to speed up play.
Bulldogs out to avenge 2006 demise Brisbane ended the Bulldogs' NRL premiership campaign last year, now the blue and whites are hell bent on repaying the favour....
The Axe hits out at NSW's whingeing Queensland hardman Trevor Gillmeister came out swinging after NSW blamed referee Shayne Hayne for their loss, saying it is an "insult" to the Maroons.

Golden Oldie's feature for Game 1 Of Outback RL
Rugby League back in it's hey day had a big following in the Silver City and it is hoped that one day, the new structure of Outback Rugby League will be just as big, if not bigger.
This Sunday 17th June marks the start of the first competition game for Outback Rugby League which will include two teams from Broken Hill in the Mini and Mod League together with Menindee and Wilcannia kicking off at 10am.
The day will continue with the Youth and Senior Games and a special treat to flash back to the "good ol days of Rugby League" there'll be a Golden Oldie's Touch Football Match between the Broken Hill Saints and Broken Hill United.
"These two teams were quiet competitive back in the hey day of Rugby League in Broken Hill and whilst the new structure of Rugby League under Outback Rugby League won't follow the old clubs, we're hoping to have former players from both United and Saints out on the field for a bit of fun on Sunday" said President of Outback Rugby League - Damien Fisher.
The Golden Oldie's match will be played immediately following the second Senior's Game and before the Premier League.
Mr Fisher says he is hoping this will bring back some fond memories of Rugby League in the Silver City and those people who have been sitting on the fence to see if Rugby League was going to get going, will come out and enjoy a great game of Rugby League.
The President says another feature of the day will be the start of the Ron Cochran Shield.
Ron Cochran was "Mr Rugby League" in Broken Hill for many years and gave a lot of time and effort to the game so the Outback Rugby League Executive has decided to have the Premier League sides play for the Ron Cochran Shield.
Mr Cochran will hopefully be present on Sunday to kick off the start of the Premier League for Season 2007.
This Sunday with the official start of the season is set to be a big one with 8 games of Rugby League all kicking off at 10am at the New Home Of Rugby League - LAMB OVAL - South Broken Hill.

Dr Adrian Hurley OAM (ARL High Performance Seminar)
I have been asked to give some thoughts on how I go about putting together a winning team culture for the NRL. The answer is the same way I try to put together a winning team in any sport at any level.
An written extract from the RLCM DVD with Dr Adrian Hurley OAM
Some questions for you as the coach club leader:
. How often do you review?
We have to continually review and have major review every year. Every 2-3 years is no longer good enough. You need to be evaluating and reviewing your players, team, and culture on a continuous basis.
. How do you respond to new challenges?
Do you mainly react negatively? Someone is always throwing hand grenades into our season. You need to be the leader to dive on those grenades and show the way. Don't be an excuse maker!
. Do you have a futures unit? A committee for the future?
Do you anticipate or react? You need to have a group of people you can trust and be honest with (perhaps away from the club) who assist you in thinking about the team and club and where it is going and where it will be in two or three years time.
. How prepared is your club (and you) for the rapid changes in IT?
Technology is a valuable and essential tool of sport these days. While you, as the coach, may not be an IT person of any note, you need to get people around you who are, and you need to be continually striving for that edge that technology can give you. IT is not the answer or the secret but is a powerful tool in the right hands.
. How well prepared are you in change management and transition management?
All sporting clubs and the NRL itself are continually changing. You need to prepare yourself mentally for these continual changes. As Clint Eastwood says in his film Heartbreak Ridge, "Adapt and survive!"
. Do you follow or lead? Are your headlights shining out into the darkness?
It is not always easy to be coming up with new ideas, but you can vary what you do, and do a bit of experimenting with your training or the way you play. Remember the "up the jumper" rugby union play?
. Do you make the rules or do you wait for other clubs )competitors) to define the rules for you?
Again it is your willingness to be "different" or a leader in things that you do. In business, if we leave it up to our rivals to keep setting the standards or "rules", then we usually come second.

Rather than just look solely at the scoring move itself we will try to give a broader picture, perhaps go back a little further and highlight key factors that we feel have helped to shape the try.
