Actors ruin the show

By Ray Chesterton

Former Test players Laurie Daley and Mark Geyer joined the chorus of skepticism about player theatrics to gain penalties by feigning concussion.

Their criticism followed the Dragons' Ben Creagh and Cronulla's Paul Gallen staying down after tackles last night to strengthen their claims for penalties. Daley said the the process violated good sportsmanship in games.

"It could lead to coaches telling their players to stay down and milk penalties,'' he said. Geyer was equally opposed to the trend, saying it questioned the toughness of any player who would feign an injury to get a penalty. "It's not good for the game,'' he said.

Last night's displays came during a highly-tense game that skyrocketed in and out of controversy.

Referee Tony Archer proved that justice is not the only law enforcer to be struck blind.

In an unhappy game he missed a clearly obvious forward pass to Cronulla winger Luke Covell for a try that put his team ahead 18-10 three minutes after halftime.

Four minutes later Archer sent off Dragons Adam Peek for a glancing elbow to the head of Cronulla's Adam Dykes who had kicked the ball.

Peek's action looked inescapably deliberate and inexcusable but contact seemed minimal enough to be covered by being placed on report.

But it was the delay in players getting to their feet in selected situations that blighted the match.

Players hit high who stay on the ground emphasising what might have been a legitimate act ensure the incident is replayed by the video referee. It heightens the chance of a penalty.

Players who get to their feet immediately after a tackle, questionable or otherwise, enjoy no such latitude.

"You can see coaches instructing their players to stay down after almost every high tackle,'' said one former grand final-winning coach. "They'd be extracting every benefit.''  Daily Telegraph

Blues forwards to bind tighter

Nothing brings a group of footballers together like adversity. Well, other than the sniff of a Queensland series win.

Chided by claims they were outmuscled in State of Origin I, the Blues forwards have revealed they have met as a group several times during the build-up to the return bout tomorrow night in an attempt to ensure history doesn't repeat at Telstra Stadium.

After selector Bob McCarthy's admission that several players were under pressure and the general feeling that the Blues lacked aggression and passion in Brisbane, the pack organised their own meetings in camp, where according to prop Luke Bailey they had attempted to get "a bit more close-knit with each other".

"It's slowly coming together," he said. "We sort of just make our own group away from the rest of the team and just really put it to each other, the challenge."

Bailey admitted one of those challenges was his claim in The Sun-Herald that the Maroons had more passion than the Blues. The Gold Coast front-rower said yesterday he wanted to challenge his teammates to prove him wrong.

"All the forwards are setting themselves small challenges, whether it's in the papers or at group meetings," he said.

"It's definitely something we need to work on, just to prove to ourselves and to everyone else that we are up there with them on that stage when it comes to passion and pride."

Willie Mason, who is expected to start at prop with Brent Kite - allowing Steve Simpson to shift from the bench into the second row - has been the most vocal in the forward planning meetings.

While Bailey said "you can't put a sock in his [Mason's] mouth", he added the Bulldogs forward had "become a pretty inspirational leader over the last couple of years, [who] we all try and look up to and aspire to".

Queensland props Steve Price and Petero Civoniceva dominated game I, allowing the Maroons to come back from an 18-6 half-time deficit to win 25-18, with Bailey saying it was the forwards' job to nullify them, thereby stopping the Maroons' gifted half Johnathan Thurston: "If we give them an inch, he gets a mile."

But Bailey was as glowing in his praise about the Blues' halfback, Brett Kimmorley, likening his influence in the team during the lead-up to that of the retired Andrew Johns.

"It's just his dominance from the first training session," Bailey said. "It's like when Andrew Johns used to come in. I remember 'Johnsy' missed a game and came in and just took over, and I noticed 'Noddy' do that straight away.

"He demands the ball, he gets the ball and he directs us really well. It's been amazing how easily he's slotted in. It's going to be an added bonus for us. Just his talk and communication, direction around the field has lifted the team 200 per cent.

"[Game I halfback] Jarrod Mullen did a terrific job, but in saying that, the lack of experience and leadership is what Noddy makes up. Everyone's really excited to play with him."

Still, there remain some doubts about Kimmorley's ability to lift the Blues where Newcastle's Mullen failed to in game I, with Maroons skipper Darren Lockyer yesterday suggesting the rain-affected build-up would hinder the Blues more with a new halfback attempting to gel with the side.

"They might have a bit more work to do," Lockyer said.

The Brisbane five-eighth also attempted to place some pressure on rookie Origin referee Shayne Hayne amid all the talk of a violent game, urging the official to have a "game plan" if the match erupted.

With NRL referees' boss Robert Finch due to speak with Hayne about the possibility of a flare-up, Lockyer said: "There's a line, and I guess once it's crossed you hope the referee makes his mark. There's always a chance that's going to happen in Origin."

Lockyer, who rated the Maroons side as potentially the best he had played with in 10 years, conceded his back injury was not 100 per cent but was confident it wouldn't prevent him from playing.

"I'm not concerned. It's just still a bit tight but it's not a major injury where it's going to stop me from playing," he said.

The Blues have named Bulldogs lock Reni Maitua as 18th man, while Queensland called in Bronco Dane Carlaw as their stand-by player. SMH
Darren Lockyer in firing line

Steve Ricketts

Darren Lockyer is braced for a NSW onslaught at Telstra Stadium tomorrow night with the Blues certain to test out the 30-year-old who has conceded the back injury he is nursing is still well short of 100 per cent.

Lockyer, who was taken from the Maroons camp at Terrigal by the team doctor and physiotherapist for further treatment yesterday, said he was still restricted by the injury which is the result of accidental knees in the back from a St George Illawarra forward on June 1.

NSW debutant Greg Bird is renowned for his take-no-prisoners approach and could assume hitman status when he comes off the bench with Lockyer expecting him to bob up at five-eighth as well as lock.

Queensland forward Carl Webb is the man most likely to hand out retribution if any NSW players cross the mark in terms of targeting his skipper but Lockyer is confident Webb will not do anything stupid after missing Origin I because of injury.

"I think he's learnt his lesson," Lockyer said. "He's done six weeks and missed a grand final for throwing a punch. I think he knows what can happen if he does something reckless and he's a guy who puts the team first so I think he'll be pretty good in that department."

Asked about his fitness, Lockyer said:"My back is good. I wouldn't say it's all the way home yet but it shouldn't be a drama. It's still a bit tight, so my movements are a little bit restricted but it's still not a major injury that will keep me from playing."

Lockyer tested the back again yesterday at an unscheduled early morning training run at a beachside rugby union ground where the Queenslanders finetuned their defence.

Lockyer said he hoped rookie referee Shayne Hayne clamped down on any foul play. "There is a line in Origin and once it's crossed you hope the referee makes his mark," he said. Courier Mail

Salford unveil Shaun McRae as new coach

Click RLCMtv Shaun McRae for a short video clip.

Struggling engage Super League side Salford City Reds have named Australian Shaun McRae as their new coach.

The former St Helens, Hull and South Sydney boss, 48, has been handed a four-and-a-half year contract that will take him to the end of the 2001 season.

The Reds, who sacked Karl Harrison last month, are bottom of the table after picking up nine points from 16 games and have 11 matches to save themselves.

McRae's first game in charge will be Friday's home clash with Harlequins.

"We feel with 11 crucial games to play that this is a very important signing for the club," said Salford chairman John Wilkinson.

"We feel we had to make a signing of a person with vast experience and an enviable track record.

"I'm positive everybody will get behind him and we can complete the season on a high note."

McRae coached throughout the first nine seasons of Super League, winning the title with St Helens and then moving on to Gateshead and Hull.

He left Hull at the end of the 2004 season to take over at South Sydney but his tenure with the NRL club ended last year when he was moved upstairs to director of rugby.

He quit that role over the winter and has since taken a break from the game, although he applied unsuccessfully for the Great Britain coaching job earlier this year.

He was made favourite for the Salford post immediately after Harrison's departure on May 22 and he was one of four applicants shortlisted for the post by the club.

McRae had travelled to Britain to undertake some TV work with Sky Sports when he heard about the vacancy.

It took the club two weeks to finalise the appointment but McRae is now relishing the challenge and is confident of leading the Reds to safety.

McRae added: "With 11 games remaining we will have to win the majority of them to go past somebody.

"I don't think we can place a game percentage on that but clearly it needs to improve - nine points out of 16 indicates there has to be some improvement.

"Other clubs can have a say but really your destiny lies in your own hands. You can only control what your team can do.

"We have to continue to work hard and utilise the talent at this club - and clearly there is a lot of talent. That was proved when they reached the play-offs last year."

Salford have shown an improvement in form since Harrison's departure, beating Huddersfield and losing narrowly to champions St Helens.

One man partly responsible for that was assistant coach James Lowes, who maintained the day-to-day running of the side along with football director Steve Simms and was interviewed for the job himself.

The club say the former Great Britain hooker will remain as McRae's number two.

Wilkinson said: "James was interviewed but we feel he needs more time.

"He is a very good young coach but I think working with Shaun will do him some good. He reacted very positively and is looking forward to working with Shaun."  BBC Sport
Sharks hold off 12-man Dragons for win

Cronulla withstood a furious fightback by a 12-man St George Illawarra to run out 20-16 winners in a fiery NRL local derby at Oki Jubilee Stadium.

The Dragons played the majority of the second half a man down after prop Adam Peek was sent off for a late high shot on Adam Dykes, the Sharks going on to claim their second win of the season over their southern Sydney neighbours in an entertaining contest.

The Sharks were led brilliantly by Paul Gallen, who was in the thick of everything as he spent time at five-eighth and in the backrow.

Both sides scored three tries with Luke Covell's four goals proving the difference as Cronulla surged into fifth spot on the ladder.

In a willing game littered with plenty of big hits, the incident which led to Peek's 48th minute dismissal seemed relatively innocuous as the big front rower clipped Dykes with an elbow to the head after a kick from the Sharks playmaker.

Referee Tony Archer deemed the cheap shot late and intentional, and showed little hesitation in marching Peek.

From the penalty, Luke Covell potted the simple attempt at goal to put the Sharks up 20-10.

The Dragons responded in a manner which would have pleased coach Nathan Brown with Ben Ellis darting over from dummy half to leave the home side trailing 20-16 after 52 minutes.

From the restart Gallen was put on report for a high shot on opposite number Ben Creagh.

The Sharks lock then gave the Dragons a taste of their own medicine when he earned his side a penalty when he stayed down following a Richie Williams high tackle.

Despite being a man down it was the Dragons who piled on the pressure but they were unable to land the killer blow.

They got close several times, none more so than eight minutes from time when Chase Stanley reeled in a Williams chip only for the Dragons winger to be denied as Misi Taulapapa unknowingly knocked the ball out with his shoulder.

The Dragons jumped out of the gates with two tries in the opening 12 minutes to take a 10-0 lead, Jamie Soward grubbers leading to both four pointers.

Both had more than a touch of luck about them as first Williams - in his first game back in the top grade following his controversial pre-match outburst at Sydney Roosters star Braith Anasta - and then Ben Creagh benefited from kicks which had rebounded off Sharks defenders.

The Sharks hit back when Gallen took advantage of a short blind side to send Mitch Brown over before Reece Williams produced the first of two magic offloads to set up fullback David Simmons who gave the visitors a 12-10 halftime lead.

Williams was again the provider just after the break when he passed for Covell to score, the vocal 12,455-strong home left irate with replays indicating the pass may have been forward. Yahoo

Junior Coaching Book 2
An extract from RLCM Book 15

Teaching the Junior Player

With John Dixon, Celtic Crusaders Coach.

Written by Robert Rachow

.....when a player is making errors frequently, it is not simply a matter of skimming onto the next task and hoping things will right themself - the player must be re-taught the aspects of the game with which they are struggling.

Methods of evaluating the team's performance also need to be customised, replacing heavy-handed statistics with innovative barometers that measure the application of any new skills being taught.

For example, if players are learning how to step off their left foot or hit the advantage line in training, then focus on how well they have accomplished that task in the game, rather than how many tackles they have missed or how many balls they have dropped.

"Coaches need to be careful that they are not becoming too advanced for their players," says Dixon.

"It's tempting to be smug and get technical on certain aspects, but what coaches should be doing is teaching skills that are appropriate for the age and maturity of their players.

Break any new skills down into no less than five easy-to-remember components and from there you can sequentially develop the skill to a
reasonable level.

"Technique does not become skill without practice, practice, practice. And then it is only truly a skill when it is performed in a game situation while under pressure."

Like most other coaches associated with elite players, Dixon lists communication as an area of vast importance and one that is very often underestimated.

Communicating effectively is not simply a matter of giving instructions and expecting them to be acted upon. While talking is a one way process, communicating is a mutual interaction that must be conveyed with enthusiasm on both parties.

Dixon is a firm proponent that the coach must teach themselves throughout the week also, learning the characteristics of players that are not clearly evident.

Arriving at training well before the beginning of a session to chat with players and being on hand to help them through rough patches are examples of techniques that do not require much effort and time, but yield great rewards in terms of understanding.

"It is essential you are able to communicate and get your message across clearly," reveals Dixon.

"One aspect of coaching that is neglected is having the ability to communicate not only on the field, but off it as well. I think that talking to my players through the week is crucial - it's where you establish the empathy and tolerance that you will need on game day.

"And your communication should always come in a positive form. If you need to pull someone into line, then do it behind closed doors and if you need to praise them, then do it publicly in the right conditions.

If there is only one certainty in coaching, it's that coaches most likely to become successful are the ones that get their message across and communicate well with their players."

Dixon, a former school teacher by profession, believes many of the same principles he used in the classroom can be successfully applied to 'teaching' a football team. He insists that without complete concentration from players, any possible advantages of training are lost or diluted and render the practice possibly more harmful than beneficial.

Asserting a channel of concentration begins with ensuring the children remain quiet while the coach is speaking and vice-versa, thereby giving full attention to one particular subject.

A coach must also face all his players, a feat that is not usually achievable in a dressing room or when the team is standing in a circle.

Moveable objects and possible distractions, such as footballs, must be removed or kept still until they are of value to the lesson.

Above all, the experience of 'teaching' a junior Rugby League team should be one that is rewarding to all persons involved and one that bids well for the future.

The coach and players may not attain a premiership, but they can both be satisfied that down the track the skills learnt throughout the season can be built upon and developed, as the players capacity for learning increases.

For the coach, it also provides further experience combining the necessary characteristics for senior tutelage - patience, enthusiasm, communication, concentration and an appreciation for the fundamentals of the game.....
