O'Meley vows to make his mark at Roosters
By Patrick Molihan
Former teammate Nate Myles helped the Roosters clinch the signature of Test and State of Origin hardman Mark O'Meley to a four- year $1.6 million deal after the Bulldogs all but showed the big prop the door.
O'Meley was wanted by several clubs in the NRL as well as the UK Super League but the Dogs' offer was the weakest of the chasing pack.
Despite the fact O'Meley is yet to turn 26, the Bulldogs were only prepared to sign him for another two years, and coach Steve Folkes told the former North Sydney and Northern Eagles prop he would be better off seeking a fresh start elsewhere.
"That's football -- I suppose I have to realise it's a business these days," said O'Meley.
"Yeah for the big time future I probably wasn't a part of it (at the Dogs) but at the Roosters I am."
When told originally of the Bulldogs thinking, O'Meley didn't want to leave and was determined to play well enough to change the coaching staff's opinion of his long-term value. He had hoped to force them into making an offer that was comparable but the Dogs would not match the four years, and their best figure was still $500,000 short of what the Roosters were prepared to pay.
"In this day and age with injuries you start to learn more about yourself and you think, sit back and get a bit of security," said O'Meley.
"I'm pretty relieved now. Pretty happy. Four years is a pretty good deal and a bit of security for the family now that I'm locked in somewhere. But in saying that I've still got a year to go at the Dogs, and a promising year, and I'm looking forward to finishing the season here."
O'Meley told his sons Nick and Jake of the decision as they came home from school to get changed for training with the Gymea Gorillas.
At his house toasting, rather than roasting him, were several of his current teammates.
"The boys are all pretty good about it," said O'Meley.
"They understand with how the game's going and you've already got two pretty much marquee players in the team (Sonny Bill Williams and Willie Mason) so it was sorta out of reach to keep me there."
O'Meley's signature is a coup for Roosters coach Chris Anderson, yet it's former Bulldog Nate Myles who can take the credit. Myles still lives in the Sutherland Shire like O'Meley and he spoke to the Queensland forward before agreeing to the deal.
"I didn't speak to (former team mate) Braith Anasta, I mainly spoke to Nate," said O'Meley. "He's been pretty happy there and said the change was good for him.
O'Meley's signature could spell the end for Queensland veterans Chris Beattie and Danny Nutley.
The pair were signed to return from the UK Super League as short-term measures by Anderson but O'Meley is the man he wants to show the way next year. " I can be a leader in their pack," said O'Meley. "They've got some great players." GC Bulletin

NRL to Nine: finetune Fridays
By Glenn Jackson
Rugby league officials will attempt to convince the game's host broadcasters to amend their lucrative contracts in a bid to avoid a repeat of this week's City-Country scheduling problems.
As peace talks were held to hose down the other bushfire created in City-Country week - racism claims by Rabbitohs winger Nathan Merritt against City selectors - ARL chief executive Geoff Carr confirmed both Channel Nine and Fox Sports would be approached about scheduling changes.
Both broadcasters have contractual arrangements in place until 2012, which means the City-Country clash is - as it stands - locked in to either a Wednesday or a Thursday until then.
But Channel Nine will be asked to switch the City-Country back to Friday, while Fox Sports will be lobbied to scrap Monday night football during the week of the annual game - or at the least schedule a match that will not likely involve many selection candidates.
"Obviously the contractual obligations are in place through to 2012 but I'm sure they'd consider our position," Carr said. "If they look at teams like the Warriors, Brisbane and North Queensland [for the Monday night game], it would take a bit of pressure off the guys who got picked in the City-Country. The other options might be unlikely but they've got to be raised.
"The broadcasters have every right to refuse but the bottom line is because of the concerns we need to look into it."
Country coach Craig Bellamy was highly critical of the scheduling earlier this week, while Cronulla have been heavily disadvantaged, with five of their players forced to play three games within six days, and two more players ruled out because of the short turnaround.
While the future of the game itself is in no doubt - at least until the television rights deals end in 2012 - due to logistics there is still a possibility the game could be taken from the game's country heartland and moved to regional centres near Sydney, or even Sydney itself, if a compromise cannot be reached with the broadcasters.
While there is no rush on the discussions, with another year before the next City-Country, NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley confirmed they would take place at some stage.
"Yes, we'll review the situation, and we'll look at what alternatives are available," Annesley said.
Merritt, meanwhile, met City selector Bob McCarthy after the in-form Souths player said his omission from the Coffs Harbour clash might have been racially based - which along with the schedule debate has taken some of the shine off tonight's game. SMH

Rob Purdham urges the game's governing body for a Cumbrian team
By Ian Laybourn
Super League will test the waters for a Welsh franchise this weekend when Cardiff hosts a full round of matches but Harlequins captain Rob Purdham is urging the game's governing body not to turn their back on one of the hotbeds of rugby league.
Bridgend-based Celtic Crusaders, currently in National League Two, are hoping to cash in on the publicity generated by the 'Millennium Magic Weekend' by pressing their case for a place in Super League in 2009.
The Rugby Football League plans to adopt a franchise system and bring in two new teams to expand Super League to 14 teams after next season and the lobbying has already begun.
The Crusaders have grand ambitions, as do Toulouse, who hope to provide some local competition for fledgling French Super League outfit Catalans Dragons.
Purdham, whose Harlequins side meet Catalans in the opening fixture at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, believes the Welsh bid has some merit but wants the game's hierarchy to consider a Cumbria-based Super League team instead of a second French club.
"That won't help the British game because there won't be any British players playing in the French side," said the Whitehaven-born Purdham.
"It would help the French game but doesn't really help British rugby league to bring in the Aussies and the Kiwis and whoever else so why not enhance the British teams like the Welsh and Cumbrians and push some money that way?
"More Super League teams is better for the British game. Cumbria is a hot spot and, if you bring the Welsh in, there are your 14 teams."
Workington were inaugural members of the Super League back in 1996 but were relegated in the first season while Whitehaven have twice gone within a win of clinching promotion in recent times before failing to meet the criteria last year.
The 27-year-old one-time farmer joined the big time with London Broncos in 2002 following his selection for an England under-21 tour of South Africa.
He led England to victory in the Federation Shield in the autumn and replaced Mark McLinden as Harlequins captain this season but has never forgotten his roots.
Purdham played for Egremont Rangers, one of a host of strong amateur teams in Cumbria, before turning professional along with brother Gary at Whitehaven in 1998.
"If there was a Cumbrian side in Super League, it wouldn't take them long to produce local players of Super League standard," he insisted.
"If Whitehaven, Workington and Barrow didn't want to merge, then they could stay in the lower leagues and act as feeder clubs with a new club altogether in Super League.
"There is so much good talent going to waste in Cumbria because talented lads can't afford to have a part-time rugby career as injuries could affect their work.
"If there were full-time options, a lot more young lads would stick with the game and make it at the highest level. Rugby league is missing out on a lot of very good talent."
Meanwhile, Purdham is hoping his London team can get the weekend off to a cracking start when they meet the Dragons in the first of six mouth-watering Super League clashes.
"It should be a great weekend," he said. "I'm looking forward to it.
"Hopefully we can promote the game and get the Welsh public involved and put a good spectacle on in one of the best stadiums in the country." Sporting Life

Monday matches under fire
Newcastle coach Brian Smith yesterday slammed the NRL's scheduling after the Knights were handed their fifth Monday night game.
The Knights have Monday night games in rounds 17 and 18, away to Parramatta and Melbourne.
The decision fuelled the anger Smith already held towards the NRL after the harsh schedule faced by his Country representative players this week.
Danny Buderus, Kurt Gidley and Clint Newton have to play in today's City-Country match in Coffs Harbour just three days after the Knights' Monday night win in Newcastle.
With the NRL schedule set in stone until round 18, the Knights have the most Monday night games with five, one ahead of Cronulla.
Penrith have yet to be given a Monday match, while NRL front-runners Manly and the New Zealand Warriors have received just one.
Smith said it would be inconceivable to think the NRL would give the Knights another Monday game between now and the end of the regular season.
"They could not possibly give us another Monday night game at home or away, after we've been involved in five by round 17 (sic)," he said. NZ Herald

Question by Matthew - Unders and Overs
I was wondering if anyone in the group can put together a good description of the terms 'unders & overs'.
In practice it is simple to demostrate, but putting it to writing as a simple way to explain, I have difficulty.
Answer - Rick Campbell
Matthew,
To put "overs" & "under" in simple terms is "over" are a straight run followed by a run away from the ruck & "unders" being a straight run followed by a run toward the ruck.
Purpose - to make defenders come to your runners (not the other way around) & this will allow your offence to place people in gaps.
But, there are usually a few factors which will make these "lines" more successful in terms of your offensive game.
- Width from the ruck, if taken as a one/two pass carry (this will help isolate & move defenders).
- Mirrorring, if two or more runners are involved the "copying" of lines will again manipulate defenders' movements.
- Targetting an outcome, usually the hole in behind the ruck (less defenders, quicker p-t-b if tackled) or around the outside of the defence.
- Combination, by combining lines ("overs" to an "unders" etc) defenders have to make spontanious decisions, therefore you are again working into one-on-one confrontations against an unsettled defender.
Training tips - when practicing "lines", teach your runners to straighten up after performing the line.
This will help them in games push upfield after initial contact - ready for p-t-b or setting up a support.
- Always make sure your runners are squared up initially, then their next movement is straight ahead (to engage defenders), THEN run your required line.
- Teach your players that lines are both proactive (preset roles) & reactive (response to defenders movements) & practice both with the use of lines to lessen the number of tacklers confronting your runners.
