Critics buck at Broncos
By Glenn Jackson
Australia's selectors have defended themselves against criticism of the side they picked for Friday night's Anzac Test, despite admitting that some out-of-form Kangaroos were not guaranteed a start in the State of Origin this year.
Former Test firebrand Gorden Tallis lit the fuse by claiming selectors were giving too much credit to out-of-form incumbents, including Broncos Brent Tate, Shaun Berrigan and Karmichael Hunt, who play in a club team that has won just one of five matches this season.
Tallis received support from another former Test forward in Mark Geyer, who said yesterday: "I agree with him. It's meant to be representative, not reputation. That's my biggest beef with this whole thing. How Matt Bowen and Mark O'Meley missed out is beyond me. It's going to come and bite us on the arse one day.
"The team should be picked on form. Karmichael Hunt has been in pretty ordinary form, and Shaun Berrigan has been in really bad form."
Australian selector Des Morris admitted Hunt, Tate and Berrigan would not be certain starters for Queensland in State of Origin this season.
Asked whether they would be automatic selections for the Maroons, Morris said: "Not necessarily, although I think they all deserve a place."
But he defended the selectors' policy, saying: "Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I'm not getting paid for mine. A couple of them have had unhappy games but look at what they've done in the past. A lot of good players have missed out. No one's denying that. That's what makes it so prestigious to get into the side.
"It looks like it's all incumbents but they also have good form. We think that's the best combination we can put together for the Test."
Morris's colleague, Bob McCarthy, added: "When I pick teams, I don't look to see who they play for - if I did I'd be picking more South Sydney players. I look to the best players in their positions.
"Individually, I think those players are going all right. Collectively, they're not playing well."
Tallis, meanwhile, came under fire from ARL chief executive Geoff Carr following his column in a Brisbane newspaper. Carr said: "Gorden is an NRL director. The sooner he realises he's a representative of the game, the better.
"We would reprimand the Australian selectors if they criticised Gorden as an NRL director. He's got to make up his mind whether he wants to be Gorden Tallis the columnist or Gorden Tallis the director, because people don't differentiate between the two." SMH

Super League - Clubs battle to beat the drop
By Ian Laybourn
The scramble is on to avoid becoming the last club to be automatically relegated from Super League.
The Rugby Football League remain committed to introducing a franchise system for the elite division in 2009, thereby dispensing with automatic promotion and relegation.
Clubs will be granted Super League status on the basis of a set of criteria based on such factors as financial viability, stadium facilities, support base, development and community work as well as playing ability.
If the League is enlarged as envisaged from 12 to 14 teams, the incumbent clubs at the end of the 2008 season will be in pole position to retain their places, with relegation effectively scrapped after this year.
The big question is whether the League will bite the bullet and bring in expansion clubs, with Toulouse keen to add to the French connection and Celtic Crusaders desperate to add a Welsh touch.
There could still be one last chance for this year's relegated team to win promotion at the end of the 2008 National League campaign but there is certainly no guarantee.
The battle to avoid the drop, therefore, is set to intensify in the coming weeks, with the spotlight turning on Salford and Hull KR, who meet in a crucial contest on Sunday.
Huddersfield, who were made firm relegation favourites after losing their first seven matches, have transformed their season in dramatic fashion over the last fortnight.
The Giants scored just 96 points in their first seven matches but have rattled up 123 in their last three and have the best points difference outside the top three.
The bookmakers now make Salford and Hull KR joint favourites for the drop and the losers of Sunday's crunch game at Craven Park will come under even more pressure.
The consolation for the struggling duo is that their plight would be even worse had Super League brought in the new points system for this season.
National League clubs are experimenting with a system that awards three points for a win, two for a draw and a bonus point for teams losing by 12 points or less, and it seems likely that, unless it turns out to be a disaster, it will eventually be introduced into Super League.
Had the system been in use now, Huddersfield would benefit enormously, having suffered a series of narrow defeats in the first two months.
Instead of being a point ahead of Salford in 11th place, they would be up to eighth, four points clear of the Reds and only a point behind sixth-placed Wigan.
Just three rounds into the National League season, it is too early to draw firm conclusions from the experiment but the early signs are that the system is likely to have a negligible effect outside Super League because of the large number of one-sided matches.
Only four of the 15 games have so far delivered scorelines close enough to produce bonus points, although League Two looks to be more competitive with eight results earning extra points.
Promotion from League One appears to be a two-horse race between Castleford and Widnes, two of the four full-time teams, with the part-timers of Whitehaven the nearest challengers.
Whitehaven could not meet the minimum criteria for promotion last year and a similar failure this time could yet earn Super League's bottom club a reprieve but it looks a long shot. Sporting Life

Question. - Try saving tackles
I am contantly impressed with the ability of some top players to pull off a goal line tackle and save a try when one seems certain.
I refer particularly to the tackle where the attacker crosses the line but the skillful defender manages to tackle him in such a way that the attacker ends up on his back with the tackler underneath him pinning the ball carriers arms.
Can anyone advise on the details of the techniques involved? Foot position, body position prior to the contact, positioning and movements in the tackle phase etc.
Chris
Answer 1 - Try saving tackles
Tackle upper body & wrap around the ball - pin the back of the attackers arm to his body this way he can't extend it; hang on! From Rick
Answer 2 - Try saving tackles
First up, don't read any "quick" fix. It's about body position, angle of attack, agression and dynamics. Anyone who posts a quick fix should be lined up for a Steve Lacey tackle !! From Daryn
Answer 3 - Try saving tackles
Many thanks for that.
I am sure you are right re quick fixes. It is issues such as body position, angle of attack etc that I am looking to drill down into.
Aggression and commitment are taken as read in such situations.
The physical mechanics of what the tackler is trying to achieve are quite complex.
We must assume that the ball carrier is in mid lunge - if he were stood up a conventional "ball-and-all" tackle that looked to keep him on his feet and or drive him back into the field of play would do the job.
The ball carrier will be facing forwards intending to end up on the ground on his front with ball grounded.
The tackler needs to achieve a situation where the ball carrier's body is rolled through 180 degrees such that he fetches up on his back with the ball carrier underneathhim pinning the ball carriers arms.
Can anyone advise on the details of the techniques involved? Foot position, body position prior to the contact, positioning and movements in the tackle phase etc.
In this situation it is clear to all that the ball has not been grounded. This we know.
It is how the contact and subsequent rotation is achieved that is of interest.
How does the tackler grab the ball carrier from behind and roll him over before both make contact with the ground?
As Rick Campbell notes in an earlier post one needs to hit the body and wrap.
A simpler version might be to hit and wrap from the front then allowing the tackle top progress such that the ball carrier ends up on top of the tackler.
However I have seen the ball carrier on his back version enough times to believe that it was not a lucky accident, hence my interest in drilling down into the techniques. Chris
